Use Deadlock’s Atrium for quick ability and movement repetition, then move to Sandbox when you need controlled reload tests. Enter the Atrium from the Hideout’s main hall; use its practice machine for fast cooldowns and infinite stamina. Reach Sandbox through the Play menu or the Atrium teleporter, and disable No Reload before timing an ordinary reload. Record the same hero, weapon, starting ammunition, and interruption conditions across several trials so your results are comparable.
Choose the right practice space
Deadlock has two useful training environments, but they serve different purposes. The Atrium is the fast, low-friction place to understand what an ability does. Sandbox is better when you need repeatable conditions, adjustable settings, or a reload measurement that you can compare across attempts.

Menu names and training behavior can change while Deadlock is being developed. The Sandbox instructions were checked against the October 6, 2026 patch and updated October 8, 2026. Treat that date as the version boundary for the navigation described here.
Enter the Atrium for your first ability pass
- Go to the Hideout.
- Walk through the main hall and enter the Atrium.
- Locate the static practice bots and the machine that enables fast cooldowns and infinite stamina.
- Select one hero and test one ability before combining it with another.
The Atrium is deliberately convenient: you can cast, move, and repeat without waiting through a normal match. Do not treat the fast-cooldown setting as a representation of live combat cooldowns. It is a repetition aid that lets you observe an ability’s behavior quickly.

Learn each ability with a repeatable drill
A useful drill changes one variable at a time. The following sequence is a practical routine rather than an in-game requirement.
1. Establish a no-pressure baseline
Stand still, face a nearby bot, and cast the ability once. Watch the complete animation, projectile or area shape, target response, and the point at which the ability goes on cooldown. Repeat it several times with the fast-cooldown machine active. Your goal is to recognize what a clean cast looks like before adding movement or a second ability.
2. Map range and target requirements
Move closer to and farther from a bot while keeping the same facing direction. Note where the ability stops reaching the target, whether it requires a visible target, and whether it affects an area around the impact point. Test a direct hit and a deliberate miss. This distinguishes a range limit from a targeting rule.

Cast while standing still, then cast while moving in each direction. Pay attention to whether movement is slowed, stopped, or allowed normally during the animation. Repeat from different distances. This gives you a practical sense of when an ability can be used while repositioning and when you must commit to the cast.
4. Add movement deliberately
Use the same ability after a short strafe, jump, or dash if the hero has one. Repeat the test from a stationary start and a moving start. Keep the bot and distance unchanged so that the movement is the only new variable. Record whether the cast still reaches the same location and whether the animation changes.

5. Practice two-ability sequences
Once each ability is familiar alone, rehearse a two-step sequence. For example, cast a setup ability and immediately follow with a damage or mobility ability. Repeat slowly first, then at normal combat speed. The fast cooldowns let you focus on order, aiming, and timing rather than waiting. Add a third ability only after the first sequence is consistent.
6. Test failure cases
Intentionally cast from too far away, without a valid target, or while turning away from the bot. A failed attempt teaches you the same boundary that causes a missed cast in a match. Record the visual or audio feedback that confirms a failure instead of assuming the ability simply “did nothing.”

- From the main menu, open Play and choose Sandbox, or return to the Atrium and use its teleporter to Sandbox.
- Open the Sandbox settings panel before beginning a timing test.
- Check whether No Reload is enabled. Turn it off for any measurement of a normal reload.
- Keep the hero, weapon, position, and starting ammunition unchanged while comparing trials.
No Reload supplies infinite ammunition. That is useful for aiming or ability practice, but it removes the normal reload event you are trying to measure. If the option remains on, a stopwatch result is not a reload time because the game is not performing an ordinary reload.
Use Sandbox for experiments where a single changed setting matters. Examples include comparing an uninterrupted reload with one interrupted by a dash, or checking whether a weapon refills all ammunition at once or loads individual rounds.
Set up a reliable reload-timing test
Deadlock’s reload behavior depends on the weapon and the state in which you start. A full magazine, a nearly empty magazine, and a partially depleted magazine are not interchangeable tests. Follow this protocol whenever you want a number that another player could reproduce.

Choose and document the test variables
- Hero: Write down the exact hero name and confirm it again after changing heroes.
- Weapon: Record the weapon or weapon slot being tested.
- Starting ammunition: Note the magazine capacity and the number of rounds remaining before you begin.
- Reload endpoint: Decide whether you are timing until the magazine is completely refilled or until a usable round becomes available.
- Environment: Record that the test is in Sandbox with No Reload disabled.
- Interrupt condition: Start with no interruption, then run separate trials for a melee attack or dash.
Run the uninterrupted baseline
- Stand in a safe, repeatable position.
- Fire enough shots to reach the exact starting ammunition state you selected.
- Begin the reload and start your timer at the same visible or audible cue every time.
- Stop the timer at your chosen endpoint: either the completion of the full magazine or the first moment a round can be used.
- Repeat the same condition several times and keep every result, not only the fastest attempt.
Human reaction time affects a hand-operated stopwatch. A short screen recording can make the start and end cues easier to review frame by frame. If you use a recording, keep the same endpoint definition for every attempt.
Run partial and empty-magazine trials separately
Test at least two starting states: a magazine that is nearly empty and a magazine that has only a small number of rounds missing. Label them separately. A result from a partial reload should never be presented as the time for an empty magazine. If the weapon refills in a way that depends on the number of missing rounds, the starting state is part of the result.
Repeat after changing only one condition
After the baseline, change one variable—such as starting ammunition or interruption—and restore every other setting. This produces a meaningful comparison. Changing the hero, weapon, ammo state, and movement at the same time cannot tell you which factor caused a different result.
Understand the two broad reload behaviors
The reload reference distinguishes two general patterns. Exact timings and hero rosters can change with updates, so use these categories to plan a test rather than as a permanent statistics table.

For a single-unit weapon, “reload time” is ambiguous unless you specify the endpoint. A player trying to fire immediately needs the first usable round; a player preparing for a full engagement may care about the final round. Report the endpoint with the number.

Test reload interruptions as a separate experiment
Melee attacks and dashes can interrupt a reload until their animations finish. Do not mix an interrupted attempt into your ordinary reload average.
- Complete the uninterrupted baseline first.
- Start a reload from the same ammunition state.
- Trigger one melee attack during the reload and record what happens.
- Restore the same ammunition state, then repeat with a dash instead.
- Compare the result with the baseline and note whether the reload resumes, restarts, or becomes available only after the interrupting animation ends.
Use one interrupt per trial. A reload interrupted by both a melee attack and a dash does not isolate either action’s effect. Also record whether you measured the time until the weapon could fire or the time until the magazine eventually became full.
Use a practice log instead of relying on memory
A simple log prevents a convincing but unreproducible number. Copy this structure into a note or spreadsheet and create one row per attempt.

Keep excluded attempts in the log with a reason rather than deleting them. That makes it clear why your average changed and helps you reproduce the clean trials later.

- Atrium orientation: Confirm the hero’s movement and locate the fast-cooldown and infinite-stamina machine.
- Ability isolation: Spend a few repetitions on each ability’s range, target rule, and animation.
- Ability sequence: Practice one two-ability chain until you can perform it without looking at the ability bar.
- Sandbox setup: Enter through the Play menu or Atrium teleporter and disable No Reload.
- Reload baseline: Measure an uninterrupted reload from a clearly labeled ammunition state.
- Reload variation: Repeat with a different starting state or a single interruption, changing only that condition.
- Review: Save the build date, endpoint definition, and observations with the results.
This order separates learning what a hero does from measuring how a weapon behaves. It also avoids accidentally timing a reload while a practice setting is still supplying infinite ammunition.
Troubleshoot misleading results
The weapon never appears to reload
Check Sandbox settings first. No Reload must be off for a normal reload event. If it is already off, confirm that you actually depleted ammunition and that you are timing the intended weapon rather than switching slots during the test.
Two attempts have different times
Compare the starting ammunition, endpoint, movement, and interrupt state before blaming the timer. A partial reload and a full reload can legitimately differ, as can the first usable round versus the final round. Repeat with one fixed condition at a time.

Treat that as an interruption result, not a failed baseline. The documented behavior is that melee attacks and dashes interrupt reloads until their animations finish. Re-run an uninterrupted trial, then log the interruption separately.
An ability behaves differently after an update
Write down the current build and retest the smallest possible case in the Atrium. Deadlock is under active development; a practice guide checked against the October 6, 2026 patch cannot guarantee that a later patch preserves the same menu, animation, or timing. Avoid carrying a hero-specific timing table forward without checking it in the installed version.
Keep results version-specific
The reload mechanics reference was last modified August 26, 2025, so its conceptual distinction between full-magazine and single-unit reloads is more dependable than any unverified hero-specific number. The current Sandbox guidance was checked against the October 6, 2026 patch, and ongoing development was reported September 30, 2026. When sharing a timing, publish the game-build date, hero, weapon, ammunition state, endpoint, and interruption condition alongside it.
That format tells another player exactly what to reproduce and protects your notes from becoming misleading after a balance or interface update.
