Hands-on practice matters in AIOps because the work is more than knowing tool names: it means reading operational evidence, diagnosing a problem, choosing an action, and checking whether that action helped. AIOps can mean operating AI systems, including machine-learning and generative-AI services, or using AI agents to operate cloud services. This guide covers both meanings where relevant, with practical incident work centered on the latter.
What hands-on AIOps practice should teach
A useful exercise resembles an operational task rather than a vocabulary quiz. A learner should have a system to observe, a fault or degradation to investigate, evidence to interpret, and a way to assess the outcome of an intervention. That connects concepts such as observability and root-cause analysis to the decisions operators actually make.
Microsoft Research’s AIOpsLab project is an example of this design. Its framework models a problem using an application, an operational task, a fault, a generated workload, and an evaluator. The project describes tasks spanning detection, localization, analysis, and mitigation. These are documented capabilities of the framework, not proof that a particular exercise produces a measured learning gain.

Detect a change
Start by deciding whether the system is behaving abnormally. A symptom might appear as a change in a metric, an error in an application log, or a slow request in a trace. Practice should require learners to distinguish a meaningful signal from normal variation instead of simply identifying a dashboard component.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Localize the affected component
Once a problem is detected, narrow down where it is occurring. Traces can show request paths across services; logs provide event detail; metrics show how measurements change over time. AIOpsLab’s Microsoft Research overview also describes lower-level information, such as system-call logs and cluster information, as potential inputs to operational analysis. The exact telemetry available depends on the deployment; not every environment uses every component.
Form and test a diagnosis
Use the evidence to develop a plausible explanation, then check it against other signals. For example, a slow request might coincide with a change in a service metric or a relevant log event. The aim is not to guess the cause from one alert, but to assemble a defensible account of what is happening and where.

Mitigate and evaluate
Choose an action that addresses the diagnosed issue, then assess the result. A useful exercise makes the consequence visible: did the fault stop, did the service recover, or did the intervention create a different problem? AIOpsLab describes evaluating agent solutions and retaining results that can inform later attempts. That illustrates a feedback loop for practice, but does not establish a human learning-outcome comparison.

How to choose a practice format
The right option depends on whether you want open-ended technical experimentation or a guided course, and how much setup you can take on. The options below are documented examples, not a ranking; current access and details should be checked with each provider.

| Option | What it supports | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| AIOpsLab open-source environment | Interactive agent development and evaluation, with documented local simulated Kubernetes and remote-cluster paths. Its task set includes detection, localization, analysis, and mitigation. | Self-directed and technically involved. The repository lists Python 3.11 or newer, Helm, and Poetry or pip; the chosen cluster path adds its own setup requirements. |
| Microsoft certification preparation | Structured preparation spanning machine-learning operations and generative-AI operations, with learning paths, a practice assessment, and an exam sandbox described on the certification page. | Intermediate and platform-specific. The page expects relevant prior experience; check the live page for current assessment access and certification details. |
| HPE AIOps Foundation course | An HPE course sheet describes hands-on exercises and access to virtual lab environments. | The course sheet is an older description. Confirm that the course is currently available and verify its delivery format and syllabus. |
Compare options on the dimensions that affect your goal: the range and realism of tasks, whether attempts receive useful evaluation, setup burden, how much instruction is provided, and dependence on a particular platform. Do not assume a listed preparation resource or course is currently available without checking its provider.

- Check prerequisites: Confirm that your environment meets the repository’s current requirements, including Python 3.11 or newer, Helm, and either Poetry or pip.
- Choose a cluster path: For a local simulated Kubernetes cluster, the repository documents a
kindroute and configuration examples for x86 and ARM. It also documents remote Kubernetes and Azure VM deployment paths. - Run a defined task: Work through an available scenario involving an application, fault, workload, and operational task. Follow the current repository instructions for launching it.
- Inspect the evidence: Use the telemetry available in that environment to detect the issue and reason about its location and likely cause.
- Take an action and review evaluation: Apply a mitigation, inspect the evaluator’s result, and use what it reports to inform another attempt.
Microsoft Research frames the design goal this way: “The framework should allow agents to interact with realistic service operation tasks in a reproducible manner.” Reproducible scenarios are useful for comparing attempts, but a lab’s evaluation is not a substitute for understanding why an action worked or failed.

Microsoft’s Machine Learning Operations Engineer Associate certification is described as intermediate. Its guidance expects a data-science background, Python experience, and entry-level DevOps familiarity, including GitHub Actions and command-line interfaces. Its listed scope includes machine-learning lifecycle operations, GenAIOps infrastructure, quality assurance, observability, and performance optimization. Microsoft states: “You need experience training, optimizing, deploying, and maintaining traditional machine learning models by using Azure Machine Learning, in addition to experience deploying, evaluating, monitoring, and optimizing generative AI applications and agents by using Microsoft Foundry.” That is a description of the certification’s expected experience, not a universal prerequisite for every way of learning AIOps.
What hands-on practice can—and cannot—show
Practical exercises can give learners a place to connect operational concepts with evidence, actions, and outcomes. Project documentation and course materials show that hands-on work is part of credible AIOps learning and research environments. The sources cited here do not establish a quantified advantage over theory-only study, so no percentage or guaranteed improvement should be inferred.
