You can learn a new typing layout without immediately giving up your normal typing ability—but separate the physical keyboard shape from the character mapping, and practise the new skill before relying on it for everyday work. A columnar (also called ortholinear or matrix) keyboard changes where the keys sit; Colemak or Dvorak changes what those keys type. You can learn an alternative mapping on your current keyboard, and you can try columnar geometry while keeping QWERTY. If you change both at once, you are learning two things together, and the available guidance does not establish a universally best sequence.

First decide what you are changing

“Columnar layout” can mean two different things. One is the physical arrangement of the keys: a conventional row-staggered keyboard offsets neighboring rows, while a columnar or matrix keyboard lines keys up in columns. The other is the software layout—the mapping from a physical key to a character. QWERTY, Colemak and Dvorak are character layouts; they can be used on different keyboard shapes.

That distinction makes it possible to make a smaller transition. If you want columnar geometry, you can initially keep the familiar QWERTY mapping. If you want Colemak or Dvorak, you can practise it on the keyboard you already own. Buying a new keyboard, moving keycaps or relabeling keys is not required to learn another mapping; the Colemak FAQ explicitly recommends against treating those steps as prerequisites.

Write down the goal before changing settings:

  • Try columnar geometry only: keep your current software layout and learn the new physical positions.
  • Try another character layout only: keep your keyboard and practise the new mapping with a tutor.
  • Change both: expect the physical positions and character mapping to be unfamiliar at once. The Colemak community guidance distinguishes row-staggered and matrix boards, but the reviewed sources do not establish a best universal order for combining both changes.

This matters most if your immediate priority is dependable typing for work or school. A staged transition gives you a way to keep using a familiar setup while you build competence in the new one.

Choose a layout that fits your needs

Colemak and Dvorak are both practical alternatives to consider, but the available sources do not establish that one is best for everyone. Compare the everyday consequences, not just headline efficiency claims: whether the layout works with your language and operating system, how familiar shortcuts and punctuation feel, which tutors support it, and whether you are also changing keyboard geometry.

Consideration Colemak Dvorak
Learning support described here The Colemak learning page provides staged lessons, recommends an accuracy checkpoint, and points learners toward typing tests and games for later speed practice. The Dvorak keyboard-training course offers five lessons and lets learners practise the mapping before changing the computer-wide keyboard setting.
Transition considerations The Colemak FAQ and community guide describe the layout as designed for transition from QWERTY and discuss shortcut retention. Individual results are not established by that description. The tutor supports learning before a system-wide switch. The reviewed tutor information does not quantify the amount of mapping change or predict how quickly a particular learner will adapt.
Pace guidance The learning page recommends ten minutes of daily practice for a couple of months. This is a suggested schedule, not a guaranteed recovery timeline. The tutor lets learners choose their own pace. Its optional guideline is to finish a 100-word lesson in 15 minutes; that is specific to this course, not a general proficiency standard.
Changing keyboard hardware A new keyboard is not necessary. Colemak’s community guide describes a Colemak-DH version for matrix or ortholinear boards that omits the row-staggered Angle mod. The tutor’s practice path does not require an immediate system-wide switch. The reviewed source does not specify a special Dvorak variant for columnar hardware.
Universal winner or guaranteed result Not established by the Colemak FAQ, community guide or learning page. Not established by the Dvorak tutor.

Before committing, check that the target layout covers the language you type and that you can access it on your operating system. For Windows, the Colemak FAQ says Colemak is included in Windows 11 version 24H2 and newer. That statement is specific to Colemak and those Windows versions; it should not be taken as a claim about other layouts, operating systems or editions. Check your installed version and available keyboard layouts before planning a system-wide change.

Set up practice without risking your everyday typing

Start with a tutor that matches the character layout you intend to learn. Colemak’s learning page recommends beginning lessons immediately after switching to Colemak. The Dvorak training course takes a lower-risk approach: practise the mapping in the tutor before changing the computer-wide layout setting. These are different practice paths, so choose the one that best fits your need to keep ordinary typing available.

  1. Record a baseline. Use a typing test in the language you normally type and note your speed and accuracy. The sources do not prescribe a particular test or baseline score; the point is to compare your own progress under consistent conditions.
  2. Choose one learning target. Decide whether you are practising geometry, a new character mapping, or both. If keeping everyday work fast is essential, do not add an unneeded change to the practice period.
  3. Open the matching tutor. Colemak Learn provides staged lessons for Colemak. The Dvorak keyboard-training course has five lessons and supports practice before a system-wide switch. Colemak Academy’s interface lists levels, all-word and full-sentence modes, mapping controls, and support for Colemak, Colemak-DH, Dvorak and custom layouts.
  4. Keep work and practice distinct at first. Use a dedicated practice block for the new layout. If the tutor lets you practise without altering the system setting, that allows you to preserve your normal configuration while learning. If you switch the system mapping for Colemak, confirm the active mapping before starting work so that your keystrokes produce the characters you expect.
  5. Keep your baseline conditions consistent. When checking progress, use the same language and, as far as practical, the same test conditions. Otherwise a faster or slower result may reflect a different test rather than a change in your skill.

The cited learning pages are guidance from the layout and tutor publishers, not controlled studies of how quickly people regain typing speed. Treat the setup as a practical learning plan, not a promise that work performance will remain unchanged during the transition.

Follow a practice rhythm that protects accuracy

Use accuracy and fluency as the first gate

The Colemak learning guide recommends repeating a lesson until you reach at least 97% accuracy without hesitating, then moving on. This is a recommendation from Colemak’s own learning site, not a benchmark validated across all learners or tutors. Its useful principle is to avoid advancing simply because a lesson feels familiar: check that you can type it accurately and smoothly.

For Dvorak, the tutor lets learners choose their own pace and offers finishing a 100-word lesson in 15 minutes as an optional guideline. Do not treat that course-specific suggestion as a universal requirement or compare it directly with Colemak’s accuracy threshold; they measure different things.

Practise briefly and regularly

Colemak suggests ten minutes of practice daily for a couple of months. Use that as a manageable starting schedule rather than a deadline for fluency. The source does not guarantee that every learner will reach a particular speed in that time. Short, consistent practice also makes it easier to keep the new layout from interfering with the rest of your day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

During a session, keep your eyes on the screen or on a layout image rather than looking down at the keycaps. Colemak’s guide advises against relabeling or moving keycaps: labels can encourage visual checking, and moving keycaps can relocate the familiar tactile bumps on F and J. The Dvorak tutor likewise says learners can keep their QWERTY labels while learning its mapping.

Stop and reset if accuracy suddenly falls

The Colemak guide recommends taking a short break after a sudden decline in accuracy. Do not interpret frustration or physical discomfort as a reason to push harder. The cited learning pages do not provide medical advice or an individualized ergonomic assessment; if a setup causes persistent discomfort, pause and seek suitable guidance rather than assuming a different layout will solve it.

Decide when to use the new layout for everyday work

Colemak’s learning guide suggests moving into everyday use when you reach two-thirds of your previous typing speed. It is a rule of thumb from the layout’s own site, not independent evidence that this is an optimal threshold for every person or job. If your work has little tolerance for typing errors or delays, you may choose to wait longer or practise outside work until your accuracy and confidence are adequate.

Track progress with comparable tests: keep the language and conditions consistent, and look at accuracy as well as speed. A speed result by itself can hide a costly rise in errors. Once you meet your own readiness threshold, introduce the new layout where mistakes are recoverable before relying on it for time-sensitive tasks.

If you need to retain QWERTY, Colemak recommends a separate five-to-ten-minute daily QWERTY practice block. Keep it distinct from new-layout practice instead of switching repeatedly in the middle of a lesson. The page recommends the routine for retention, but it does not establish through controlled research how much QWERTY ability the practice will preserve.

Keep keyboard geometry and layout compatibility in view

A columnar board is optional hardware, not a shortcut around learning. Colemak’s community guide describes Colemak-DH differently for row-staggered and matrix or ortholinear boards: the matrix/ortholinear version does not use the row-staggered Angle mod. This is specific layout guidance; it is not evidence that columnar keyboards automatically improve comfort, speed or health.

If you want to try a columnar board, make the geometry the only new variable at first if that suits your goal. Keep the character mapping familiar, then decide separately whether to adopt Colemak, Dvorak or another mapping. If you have already decided to learn both together, build practice around both changes and expect your early speed to reflect the combined learning task. The reviewed sources do not identify a universally superior sequence.

Colemak’s FAQ says the layout is designed for touch typing and is not worth the switching effort for someone who does not intend to learn touch typing. That is the FAQ’s recommendation about Colemak, not a general rule that every person must touch-type to use any alternative layout.

What the published efficiency figures can—and cannot—tell you

Colemak’s Ergonomic page publishes comparisons claiming that Colemak uses the home row 14% more than Dvorak and 122% more than QWERTY. It also states that same-hand row jumping is 1,500% more on QWERTY than Colemak, and that finger distance is 102% more on QWERTY than Colemak (118% more at a 4% error rate). These are the layout publisher’s comparisons on an undated page accessed in 2026.

The page does not provide an independent study citation in the text reviewed here. Treat the figures as the publisher’s claims about layout characteristics, not as independently confirmed measurements of what a particular typist will experience. They do not establish that you will type a certain percentage faster, avoid discomfort, or recover your old speed by a particular date.

No independently verified typical number of days or hours to learn a columnar arrangement or regain a former typing speed is established by the cited material. Your own progress depends on your practice and circumstances; use accuracy, comfort and comparable speed checks to guide decisions rather than treating an efficiency percentage or schedule as a personal forecast.

Common transition problems and what to do

“I keep looking down at the keys”

Keep your existing key labels in place and use the screen or an on-screen layout image as your reference. The Colemak guide specifically advises against looking at the keyboard while typing the new mapping. If you catch yourself checking the keycaps, slow down, return to an easier lesson and rebuild accuracy before trying for speed.

“My speed has dropped, so I should switch back”

A speed drop is expected to be a concern during a transition, but the available material does not quantify the drop or establish a typical recovery time. Separate practice from urgent work when possible, and use a consistent test to decide whether you are improving. If you cannot risk slower typing in your current task, use your familiar setup for that task and practise the new layout separately.

“I am mixing the new layout and QWERTY”

Keep each practice block dedicated to one mapping. If QWERTY still matters to you, schedule its maintenance separately; Colemak suggests five to ten minutes daily for that purpose. Avoid toggling layouts within a lesson, where each switch can disrupt the immediate task.

“The keyboard feels different even when the layout is right”

Check which change you are feeling: altered key geometry, a changed character mapping, or both. Confirm the active software layout, then simplify by keeping one variable familiar while you practise the other. The cited sources do not establish that a matrix board is inherently more comfortable, so do not assume discomfort proves that you need another layout or more practice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I do not know whether to switch the whole computer”

If you need to keep QWERTY available, use a tutor that supports practice without changing the computer-wide setting; the Dvorak course is described as doing this. For Colemak, the official learning page recommends lessons after switching, while the FAQ says Windows 11 version 24H2 and newer includes Colemak. Check your installed version and available layouts before changing the system mapping, and verify the active setting before typing important text.

A practical decision rule

  • Choose a target for the transition: geometry, mapping or both.
  • Use an appropriate tutor and begin with accurate, unhurried practice.
  • Keep sessions dedicated and short; preserve familiar typing for tasks that cannot tolerate a slowdown.
  • Use consistent speed and accuracy checks, and set a readiness threshold that fits your work.
  • If QWERTY remains necessary, maintain it in a separate practice block.
