To run uploaded videos as a nonstop YouTube channel, build a rights-cleared playlist, send it through an encoder such as OBS to a YouTube RTMPS live event, and keep the encoder, power and network monitored. YouTube must verify your channel and find no recent live-stream restriction before you begin. A 24/7 schedule can attract viewers, but monetization is conditional: copyright claims and repetitive or mass-produced programming can prevent or limit earnings.

What a 24/7 linear YouTube channel actually is
A linear channel is a continuous live broadcast assembled from prerecorded files. An encoder reads your playlist in sequence, sends the resulting video and audio to YouTube over RTMPS, and starts the next item when the previous one ends. Viewers join the current point in the schedule rather than selecting an individual video as they would from a normal on-demand library.

Complete these checks before you schedule anything
Clear every right needed for a public livestream
Use only material you own or have licensed for public livestreaming. Clearance must cover the picture, music composition, sound recording, performers, presenters, stock footage, logos and any third-party clips. A licence for an ordinary upload or a private screening is not automatically a licence for an always-on public broadcast.
Keep a written rights record for each item. Record the licensor, exact asset or episode, permitted territories, start and end dates, livestream permission, monetization permission and any attribution wording. Store contracts, invoices and correspondence where the person operating the channel can retrieve them during a claim.
- Separate music rights from video rights; a programme can be cleared visually while its soundtrack is not.
- Check expiry dates before adding a file to a schedule that may run for months.
- Remove material promptly if a licence ends or a rights holder withdraws permission.
- Do not assume that a purchased song, stock subscription or Creative Commons label permits commercial livestreaming; read the specific licence.
Make the channel eligible for live streaming
YouTube requires channel verification and no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. Review the current Community Guidelines, Terms of Service, copyright rules and monetization policies in YouTube Studio before launch. A restriction, strike or unresolved identity check can stop an otherwise correct encoder from going live.

YouTube Help currently documents up to 10 active streams per channel and up to 3 active streams per stream key. Those limits apply to the channel and key configuration, not to the number of files in a playlist.
Understand the monetization risk
A public 24/7 feed is not automatically eligible for advertising or the YouTube Partner Program. On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified that repetitive or mass-produced programming is “inauthentic content.” An endless copy of one short clip, lightly varied compilations or a schedule with no meaningful editorial value can therefore be rejected even when you own every file.
Copyright claims can divert revenue, mute sections, block a territory or remove a broadcast. A rights-cleared channel still needs original or meaningfully curated programming, useful metadata and regular review of claims. No policy-compliant format guarantees acceptance or a particular revenue level.
Design a schedule viewers can stay with
Build a deliberate rotation
Start with a programme clock: list each file, duration, category, language, rights expiry and the position it occupies. Group related episodes or tracks, then place a recognisable opening, short transitions and a closing element around them. If the stream is intended for a particular time zone, put the most important blocks at predictable hours and label them in the title or description.

Use one consistent aspect ratio and audio format where possible. Mixed formats force the encoder to scale or resample, which can produce black bars, sudden volume changes or unnecessary CPU load. If you must mix them, decide whether the channel will pillarbox, letterbox or crop and apply that choice consistently.

Write accurate titles and descriptions for the live event and the recurring blocks. Do not promise a programme that the schedule does not contain. Keep a change log so you can identify which files were on air when a viewer reports a problem or a rights holder asks a question.

How to launch the channel with OBS
What you need
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days.
- Rights-cleared video and audio files, plus your written rights record.
- A computer that can decode the files continuously and remain powered without sleeping or rebooting.
- Stable internet, preferably wired, with upload capacity for the selected output.
- OBS Studio and, if you want playlist management inside OBS, the VLC components required by its VLC Video source.
1. Install OBS and prepare the media
Install the current OBS Studio release from the OBS Project. Put the files on a local drive with enough free space and use clear filenames such as 01-opening.mp4 and 02-episode-a.mp4. Avoid moving or renaming files after you build the playlist; a missing path can leave the source black when the item is called.
2. Create a scene and add your source
- Open OBS and create a scene for the channel output.
- For one file, choose Sources > Media Source, browse to the file and enable Loop only if that file should restart by itself.
- For several files, choose Sources > VLC Video Source, add the files in their intended order and enable Loop Playlist. OBS defines this option as restarting the source when it has run out of media files.
- Set the source to the scene’s full canvas. Check that the preview has no unintended crop, bars or empty space.
- Add only the overlays you can operate reliably for a full day: a logo, clock, now-playing text or emergency slate. Every extra filter is another possible failure point.
3. Configure video and audio deliberately
In Settings > Video, choose a base canvas that matches the dominant aspect ratio of your files and an output resolution and frame rate that your computer can sustain continuously. Do not select a higher output than the source merely to make a number look larger; scaling consumes resources and does not create detail.

In Settings > Output > Streaming, use the encoder recommended for your hardware, constant bitrate mode where offered, and the current bitrate, keyframe interval, resolution and frame-rate values shown in YouTube’s live-streaming guidance. YouTube’s recommendations can change, so copy the values displayed for your selected resolution rather than relying on an old preset. Choose an audio sample rate and channel layout supported by both OBS and the source files, then watch the audio meter for clipping.
Select YouTube RTMPS as the service. If your computer cannot encode the chosen output without sustained overload, reduce the output resolution or frame rate before going live. A stable lower-quality stream is preferable to dropped frames and repeated reconnects.
4. Create the YouTube live event
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create > Go live.
- Create or schedule the event, enter a truthful title and description, select the audience setting and choose the archive and visibility options you need.
- Copy the stream key shown for this event. Treat it like a password: never publish it in a screenshot, chat message, description or support ticket.
- Paste the key into OBS’s streaming settings and save it only in the protected configuration on the machine that will broadcast.
If a key is ever exposed, stop using it, create or regenerate a replacement in YouTube Studio and update OBS before restarting. A key shared across unrelated operators also makes it difficult to identify who changed the feed.

5. Test privately before going public
Start the OBS stream with the YouTube event set to private or unlisted. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, confirm that the preview appears, the audio is audible on headphones, the first playlist transition works and the event is receiving data without dropped frames. Let the test run long enough to cover at least one file change and any planned transition.

6. Publish and monitor the first hours
When the test is clean, set the event to its intended visibility and start the broadcast from OBS and YouTube Studio. Keep the Live Control Room open on a monitoring device. Watch stream health, dropped frames, encoder overload, audio levels, current programme and viewer-facing metadata.
Maintain a restart checklist beside the machine: verify power, disable sleep and hibernation, pause automatic reboots during the broadcast window, confirm the correct scene and source, check disk space, test the network and record the stream key location. Use a wired connection where possible and place the computer on a UPS if a brief power interruption is common.
7. Archive, review and refresh
Archive the livestream when practical. After each major block, review the archive for copyright checks, missing audio, bad transitions and metadata errors. Rotate programming rather than letting a short sequence repeat indefinitely, and write an incident entry whenever the stream stops, reconnects or requires a manual change.

Reliability and recovery procedures
Plan for a YouTube disconnect
A dropped YouTube connection does not necessarily mean your files are damaged. First check YouTube’s live status, then inspect the encoder’s network and dropped-frame counters. Avoid repeatedly changing bitrate, resolution and keys at random; make one controlled change, record the time and observe whether the connection stabilises.
With local OBS, restart the stream only after confirming the correct scene, source paths and key. With a hosted service that includes recovery, verify in its status panel that the slot has reconnected and that YouTube is receiving the expected event.
Plan for a home failure
Disable sleep, lock the operating system without stopping OBS, and prevent scheduled updates from rebooting the machine during the broadcast. Keep a second copy of the playlist and configuration. If the computer is unattended, use remote access only with strong account security and a recovery contact who knows how to power-cycle the system.
Document incidents
Log the start and end time, symptom, suspected cause, action taken, affected files and whether YouTube produced an archive. Incident notes reveal patterns such as one corrupt file, a nightly router reset or a recurring encoder overload.

Watch hours, archives and policy reality
YouTube’s August 12, 2026 guidance says public long-form videos and archived livestreams can count toward qualified watch hours, while unarchived live streams do not. If watch-hour accumulation matters, configure archiving before you start and verify that the resulting video is public and available after processing. A live viewer count or a continuous runtime by itself does not establish eligibility.
Keep the archive title, description and thumbnail accurate, and review any automated copyright checks. If a broadcast contains material that later becomes restricted, the archive can inherit that problem even after the live event has ended.
Cost and operating trade-offs
OBS itself is free software. A local channel still has indirect costs: a computer capable of decoding the playlist, storage, electricity, cooling, a reliable upload connection, backup power and the time required to monitor failures. A hosted slot converts much of that work into a recurring charge and is useful when the channel must continue while nobody is home.
