You can pursue your first front end developer job without prior professional experience, but you will need to show more than interest: build the core skills, create work an employer can inspect, and apply for roles that genuinely match your level. There is no guaranteed route or fixed time-to-hire; expectations vary by employer and location.

Choose a realistic first role

Start by looking for apprentice, junior, intern, or other explicitly early-career openings. Read job descriptions closely and note which fundamentals and tools appear repeatedly. Check the stated seniority, responsibilities, location, and eligibility before applying; a role labeled “junior” can still ask for experience that does not fit your current background.

As one UK-specific example, the Government Digital and Data Profession Capability Framework describes junior developers as learning on the job while delivering components with guidance, and apprenticeships as a way to receive training while developing skills at work. Its role descriptions concern UK government positions, not a universal hiring standard. The framework defines the work broadly: “A frontend developer designs, builds and improves website software that meets user needs.” UK Government Digital and Data Profession Capability Framework: Frontend developer.

Learn the web foundations in a structured order

Build a foundation before collecting frameworks or trendy tools. A useful beginner sequence covers how the web works, semantic HTML, CSS, JavaScript, web standards, accessibility, and the development environment. You should also practice researching unfamiliar problems, learning independently, and collaborating—habits that matter alongside writing code.

Mozilla’s MDN Curriculum is a free, self-paced beginner curriculum, last updated in October 2025. It links to an interactive Scrimba frontend learning path as one possible supplement. A degree, bootcamp, or self-study can each be a way to learn; the material does not establish any one credential as mandatory or sufficient for getting hired.

Build a few projects that prove what you can do

Projects help address the gap in employment history when they make your skills and decisions visible. Choose a small number of useful, complete examples rather than filling a portfolio with tutorial clones. A project might be a hobby web app, a site connected to an industry you want to work in, a fix for a public website issue, or a volunteer or freelance site for a community organization. You can also document a contribution to an open-source project.

For each project, make it easy to understand:

  • What problem it solves and who it is for.
  • What you personally designed or built, especially if others contributed.
  • Which technologies you used and why.
  • A working demo and source code, where appropriate.
  • A challenge you encountered, how you approached it, and what you would improve next.

MDN recommends a concise portfolio with a landing page and a few significant highlights, including project descriptions, technologies, code, demos, and documented open-source work. Its practical principle is: “The whole idea here is don’t tell me what you can do — show me what you can do.” MDN: Finding a job.

Make your application straightforward to assess

Put your portfolio, live work, and code where a reviewer can find them without hunting. Keep your résumé truthful and tailor it to the opening: connect your experience to the listed responsibilities, and use project descriptions to explain the problem, your contribution, and the evidence of the result. If a previous job or personal interest gives you relevant knowledge of the employer’s field, describe that connection honestly rather than implying it is professional frontend experience.

Apply selectively instead of sending the same application to every listing. MDN’s career guidance recommends thinking carefully about the kind of job you want and avoiding a scattergun approach. Conversations with people in the field or the employer can help clarify what skills the role actually needs; networking is a way to learn and make relevant connections, not a substitute for demonstrating ability. Prepare to explain your work and consider other entry points

Practice walking through code you wrote: what it does, why you made particular choices, what broke, and how you diagnosed and fixed it. Use the job description and any information from the recruiter to learn what an interview will cover; interview formats are not universal.

If a direct junior opening is out of reach, consider internships, apprenticeships, freelance or volunteer work, open-source contributions, and adjacent roles. Judge each opportunity by whether it provides relevant frontend tasks, feedback or collaboration, and work you can later explain or show. Check compensation, supervision, eligibility, and time commitment where those details are available; an opportunity’s label alone does not establish that it will build the experience you need.

Set expectations without relying on promises

A portfolio, certificate, bootcamp, or target number of applications cannot guarantee an offer. Hiring conditions differ by location and employer, and the reviewed guidance does not establish a general hiring probability, universal salary, or time-to-offer for a new candidate. Focus on improving the evidence you control: foundational skills, finished work, clear explanations, and applications aligned with your current level.
