To register a whip-attack kill in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, grapple an enemy, then press the normal attack button just before the whip reaches it. Rose attacks as she arrives; merely latching onto an enemy does not count. Repeat the timed grapple attack until you defeat 10 enemies for the Holy Cross Work of Mercy.
What counts as a whip attack?
The qualifying move is a grapple follow-up, not a conventional standing whip swing. Aim the Holy Whip at an enemy, start pulling toward it, and add a normal attack input during the pull. If the timing is correct, Rose strikes as she reaches the target and the resulting defeat counts toward the objective.
The whip serves two purposes: it is a traversal tool for swinging between hooks and pulling away from hazards, and it is an offensive tool for grappling enemies. Your equipped weapon determines the impact animation and effect, so the same timing can look different with different weapons.

- Face the target. Stand where the enemy is within grapple range and aim the whip at it.
- Trigger the whip grapple. Rose begins pulling toward the enemy.
- Press normal attack just before contact. Do not wait until Rose has already reached the target. The attack should occur as she arrives.
- Verify the defeat. Watch for the hit and confirm that the objective counter advances. A latch without the follow-up attack is not a qualifying kill.
- Repeat the sequence. Continue until the Holy Cross Work of Mercy shows 10 completed whip-attack kills.
Controls on PC and consoles
The cited PC control reference lists right mouse button for Arcane Whip and left mouse button for standard Attack. Use the standard Attack input for the follow-up strike, not the whip/grapple input again.

Default PlayStation, Xbox and Switch mappings were not verified. Open the game’s controls or remapping screen on your platform and identify the buttons labelled Arcane Whip (or whip grapple) and Attack. Remapped controls take priority over any printed guide.

Why your grapple kills may not count
You only latched onto the enemy
Grappling by itself does not satisfy the requirement. Press the normal attack button during the pull, immediately before the whip connects.

You attacked too late
The timing window is short. If Rose reaches the enemy before the attack input is read, the strike may not occur. Press slightly earlier on the next attempt rather than waiting for visible contact.

A moving enemy changes the distance and can shift the contact moment. Practice first on an enemy that is mostly stationary or follows a predictable path.

A hazard interrupted the attempt
Spikes and other hazards can punish a missed grapple. Practice in a safe room with enough open space to recover, then attempt the objective when you can control the approach.
How to practice and farm the 10 kills
No authoritative source identifies one universally best farming room. Choose a location using these practical criteria:

- Predictable movement: stationary or pattern-based enemies make the contact timing easier to learn.
- Distance from hazards: leave room for Rose to recover if the grapple misses or the attack is mistimed.
- Room reset behavior: a room that reliably repopulates enemies can reduce travel between attempts.
- Safe positioning: line up the target from a stable platform instead of practicing beside spikes or a drop.
Start with one target and repeat the same rhythm: aim, grapple, press Attack just before contact, confirm the defeat. Once the timing is consistent, move through nearby targets until the counter reaches 10. If the counter does not advance, stop and adjust the attack timing rather than assuming every grapple is qualifying.

The Holy Cross Work of Mercy requires 10 enemies defeated with whip attacks, according to NoobFeed’s 2026 objective listing. The requirement concerns the timed grapple strike described above, so ordinary standing whip swings and grapple latches should not be treated as substitutes.

The game’s whip mechanics are intentionally multifunctional: the Holy Whip can swing between hooks, grapple enemies and pull Rose away from spikes. That design is why the objective asks for an attack performed during traversal rather than a simple ground-based weapon swing.
