Use the server console to moderate players: run listplayers (or lp) to identify the correct person, kick <player name> [reason] for an immediate removal, and ban add <player name> <duration> <unit> [reason] for a timed ban. Remove a ban with ban remove <player name>. You need a sufficient command-permission level, and permission defaults differ between 7 Days to Die builds, so check the server’s own serveradmin.xml and command help before relying on a default.
What you need before running moderation commands
Kick and ban commands are server-side actions. Run them in the dedicated server console or the control-panel console for the instance you administer, not in ordinary chat. If the console rejects a command, the usual cause is insufficient permission, a name that does not match the connected player, or syntax that differs in the build you are running.
- Administrative access: You must already be an administrator or have a delegated permission level that allows the command.
- The exact player identity: Names can be similar, can contain spaces, and can change. Resolve the player from the live player list before acting.
- A reason and duration policy: A reason is optional in the documented syntax, but recording one in your moderation log makes appeals and team handoffs easier. A ban duration is required by the timed-ban syntax.
- A build-aware check: The community command table documents permission level 0 for
kickandbanin Alpha 20 Stable B238, while another server configuration guide reports level 1 in a stockserveradmin.xml. Treat the file loaded by your server as authoritative.
Identify the right player first
Never act on a partial name when two players could match it. Query the connected-player list:
listplayersThe short form is:
lpThe output is intended to show the names of currently connected players. If names are similar, obtain platform identifiers with:

listplayeridsIts short form is:
lpiUse the identifier shown by the command when your server’s syntax or administration tool supports ID-based selection. At minimum, copy the exact displayed spelling and confirm that the player is online before issuing a kick. A name copied from a chat message may not be the server’s canonical name.
Kick a player immediately
A kick disconnects the player from the current session. It does not create the timed restriction used by the ban command; the player can normally try to reconnect unless another rule prevents it.

kick PlayerNameReplace PlayerName with the exact name returned by listplayers. The documented reason argument is optional.
Kick with a reason
kick PlayerName building-in-protected-areaUse a short, unambiguous reason. The parser’s treatment of spaces can vary by build or console wrapper, so if a multi-word reason is not accepted, retry with a concise token such as griefing or check the command’s built-in help.
What the player experiences
The command terminates that player’s connection. It does not roll back damage, restore a stolen item, or remove structures. Handle those world-state issues separately using your normal backup or administrative procedure. If the player reconnects and repeats the behavior, use a timed ban rather than issuing repeated kicks.
Ban a player for a defined period
The documented ban form is a timed ban:
ban add PlayerName <duration> <unit> [reason]The duration and unit are separate arguments. Units are documented from minutes through years. For example:

The final reason is optional. Keep the numeric duration and unit together; 1 year is valid as two arguments, whereas a console wrapper that requires a single token may need the syntax shown by its own help output.
Choose a duration proportionate to the incident

The table illustrates syntax, not a universal disciplinary policy. Set durations in your server rules and apply them consistently. The available documentation confirms timed bans; it does not establish one universal command for a permanent ban across current builds. If you need an indefinite restriction, run the command help on your server and verify the supported form before using it.
Ban an offline player
The live-player commands help you resolve someone who is connected. For an offline account, the name or platform ID must already be present in your server’s administrative records, and the exact accepted identifier can vary by build. Check the server’s help output for the ban command and use the identifier format it documents rather than guessing.
List, remove, and verify bans
Display current bans
ban listUse this after a moderation session to confirm that the expected entry exists. Save the output in your staff log if your community requires an audit trail.
Lift a ban
ban remove PlayerNameUse the exact name or identifier represented in the ban list. If the command reports that no entry matches, first run ban list and copy the server’s spelling. Removing a ban does not automatically reconnect the player; they must join again normally.
Verify the result
- Run
ban listand confirm the new or removed entry. - For a kick, run
listplayersand confirm the connection is gone. - If the player can reconnect immediately after a supposed ban, check that you used
ban add, supplied a valid duration and unit, and ran the command on the active server instance.
Give yourself administrator access
If the console says you lack permission, add your account as an administrator from the server console:

admin add YourName 0The final 0 is the permission level. In the documented permission model, lower numbers represent more authority, so level 0 is the broad administrator level. The entry is written to serveradmin.xml; host guides report that a restart is not required after this command, although reconnecting your console or game session can help it refresh its permissions.
Run the command with the exact account name recognized by the server. If your platform uses a separate ID in the administrative file, use the format shown by listplayerids and the server’s command help.

You can create a narrower moderator role by setting the minimum level for individual commands and then assigning that level to a user. The documented examples are:
cp add kick 100
cp add ban 100
admin add ModeratorName 100This sequence makes kick and ban available at level 100 and assigns the moderator that level. Review the resulting command-permission entries before handing over access, because a level may also inherit other commands configured at the same or a more permissive threshold.
The level direction is easy to misunderstand. Community forum explanations describe a command set to level 50 as usable by levels 0 through 50, while other wording reverses “minimum” and “permission” terminology. Because those explanations are inconsistent, test the role with a harmless command on a private server and inspect the resulting serveradmin.xml entry. Do not assume that a number copied from another server has the same effect on yours.
Understand permission defaults and build differences
Permission values are not a safe universal constant. The community wiki’s command table lists default level 0 for kick, ban, kickall, whitelist operations and ban management in Alpha 20 Stable B238. A separate host configuration guide reports level 1 for kick and ban in a stock serveradmin.xml. Those reports conflict, and neither establishes the default for every later stable or experimental build.

Use this order of authority:
- Run the command’s built-in help on the live server, if available.
- Inspect the loaded
serveradmin.xmlfor the command permission entry. - Check the documentation for the exact game build and server wrapper you operate.
- Test a delegated role on a private or maintenance instance before applying it to a public world.
If a command works for one administrator but not another, compare their assigned levels and the command’s configured level before changing the ban or kick syntax.

serveradmin.xml stores administrators, bans (the blacklist), the whitelist, and command permission levels. It is the persistent record behind the console changes above.
Stop the server before manual edits
Make manual changes while the server is stopped. A running instance can rewrite the file and overwrite your edits when it saves or shuts down. After editing, start the server and verify the entries from the console rather than assuming the XML was accepted.
Find the file
The exact location depends on the operating system, installation and hosting layout. Archived Windows discussions cite:
C:Users<name>AppDataRoaming7DaysToDieSavesHosted installations may place it in /saves or in the server root. The configuration file can change both the filename and save path: AdminFileName sets the administrative filename, and SaveGameFolder sets the save location. Read those values in serverconfig.xml instead of relying on a path copied from another installation.
If the file is missing
The file may not be created until an administrative command is run for the first time. Add an administrator through the console, stop the server cleanly, and then check the configured save location. Keep a backup before hand-editing XML, and preserve the existing structure and encoding.

Kick and ban workflow for moderators
- Confirm the rule: Capture the incident time, affected players and the rule that applies.
- Identify the account: Run
listplayers; uselistplayeridswhen names are ambiguous. - Choose the least disruptive action: Kick for a one-time removal or investigation; use a timed ban when reconnection must be blocked.
- Run the command exactly: Keep the player name, duration, unit and optional reason in the documented order.
- Verify: Check
listplayersafter a kick andban listafter a ban or removal. - Record the decision: Note the command, reason, duration and operator in the staff log without publishing private account identifiers.
- Escalate configuration problems: If permissions or persistence do not behave as expected, stop manual edits, back up
serveradmin.xml, and inspect the active configuration.
Troubleshoot common failures
“Command not found” or a syntax error
Check spelling and spacing, then run the server’s help command for the exact build. Some wrappers accept only the long command name, while others expose the short forms lp and lpi. Do not substitute a permanent-ban syntax from an unrelated game or an old forum post.
“You do not have permission”
Confirm that you are connected to the correct server console, then inspect your admin add entry and the command’s configured level. A role created with cp add may not include every moderation command. Remember that level numbering is lower-is-more-powerful in the documented model, but verify the effective range on your build.

Stop issuing commands, run listplayers and listplayerids, and compare the exact account identity. Similar display names are the most common reason for a mistaken action. Explain the error to affected players and correct any ban entry with ban remove if one was added.
The ban does not persist after a restart
Check ban list, then verify that the server is writing to the expected serveradmin.xml. Review AdminFileName and SaveGameFolder in serverconfig.xml, and make sure you edited the active instance rather than a backup or a different world. Manual edits made while the server was running may have been overwritten.
The player reconnects after a kick
That is expected behavior for a kick: it removes the current connection but is not a timed ban. If the player must be prevented from returning, issue a correctly formed ban add command and verify it with ban list.

Safety and recovery checklist
- Confirm the server name and world before running a destructive command.
- Use the live player list instead of typing a remembered name.
- Prefer a kick while facts are uncertain; apply a timed ban when the evidence and policy justify it.
- Store a reason and duration in your moderation records.
- Back up

- After any change, verify with
