Use an administrator account, then enter the moderation command in the server console. A kick is temporary and allows the player to reconnect. A ban blocks access until you remove it. For a durable ban, use the player’s SteamID64 with /banid; a name ban can be bypassed if the player changes their displayed name.
Project Zomboid command syntax differs between server builds, hosting panels and published guides. In particular, kick commands are documented both as /kick and /kickuser. Check your server’s /help output before relying on a variation, and remember that a control-panel console may require the command without its leading slash.

Use a kick when you need to remove someone immediately but do not intend to prevent a later connection. Use a ban when the player should not be allowed back until an administrator reverses the decision.

A ban is not automatically permanent in the administrative sense: it remains in force until you run the matching unban command or otherwise change the server’s ban data. Keep a record of the player, identifier, reason and date so another administrator can reverse the correct restriction.

Before you enter any command
Confirm administrator rights
Kick, ban and unban commands require administrator privileges. If the server rejects the command or reports that you lack permission, authenticate or assign the correct access level before troubleshooting the command itself.
Identify where the command is going
You can moderate from an in-game administrative interface or from a hosting control-panel console.

- In-game command entry: use the slash-prefixed form, such as
/playersor/banid. - Hosting-panel console: some panels strip or reject the leading slash. If the panel’s console documentation or error message indicates that behavior, enter
banid 765611...rather than/banid 765611....
Do not paste a command intended for one console into another without checking its slash convention. A correct command can appear invalid solely because it was entered in the wrong interface.
Capture the exact player identity
Names can contain spaces and can be changed. Put a name in quotation marks when the command format supports it. For a SteamID ban, obtain the complete SteamID64 and verify every digit before submitting; an incorrect identifier can block nobody or block the wrong account.

How to list connected players
Run:
/players
This lists currently connected players. The available material does not establish whether every server displays SteamIDs in this output, so do not assume that the command will give you a usable SteamID64. If the output includes an identifier, copy it exactly. If it shows only names, use your server panel’s player information or another trusted administrative record to obtain the account ID rather than guessing.
How to kick a player
Preferred command form: /kickuser
One commonly documented form is:
/kickuser "username"
You can include a reason:
/kickuser "username" -r "reason"
Replace username with the player’s current name. Keep the quotation marks when the name contains spaces or punctuation. A reason is useful for moderation logs and for explaining the disconnect to the player, but it does not turn a kick into a ban.
Alternative form: /kick
Another published command form is:
/kick <name>
Because the two forms are reported differently and an alias relationship has not been confirmed, check your server’s command list:
/help
If /help lists only one kick syntax, use that syntax. If both are listed, use the one documented by your server build. Do not append unverified trailing Boolean values; published summaries disagree about those arguments.

What happens after a kick
The server disconnects the player, but a kick does not create a lasting restriction. The player can attempt to join again immediately. If the behavior warrants a longer exclusion, apply a ban after confirming the correct identity.
How to ban by SteamID64
Run the account-based ban
Use:
/banid <SteamID64>
For example, the shape is /banid 7656119xxxxxxxxxx; replace the illustrative value with the player’s full SteamID64. Do not use a display name in this command.

This makes the restriction harder to evade through a simple rename.
Verify the result
- Read the console response and confirm that the command was accepted.
- Record the SteamID64, the administrator, the time and the reason in your moderation log.
- If the player remains connected, kick the active session separately; a ban command may not itself remove an already connected player on every server configuration.
- Ask the player to reconnect only after you have confirmed that the restriction was intentional and correctly recorded.
The available command references do not document a universally supported reason argument for /banid. Use only the argument order shown by your server’s /help output instead of adding a trailing value from an unrelated guide.

How to ban by player name
Basic name ban
Run:
/banuser "username"
A reason can be supplied where supported:
/banuser "username" -r "reason"
This targets the name exactly as the server recognizes it. Quotation marks are important for names containing spaces.
Add an IP restriction when appropriate
To ban the name and also apply an IP ban, use:
/banuser "username" -ip
If you also need a reason and your server’s help text accepts both options, follow the order shown there, for example:
/banuser "username" -ip -r "reason"
Option order is not confirmed consistently across published guides, so treat the last form as a pattern to verify rather than a universal guarantee. An IP restriction can affect other players who share a network address and may not stop a player who changes networks. For those reasons, use it deliberately and retain the SteamID ban as the primary identity-based record when you have the ID.
How to unban a player
Unban with the command that matches the type of restriction you created.

Use the panel equivalent without the leading slash if that console requires it. If you applied more than one restriction—for example, a name ban with -ip and a separate SteamID ban—remove each restriction separately. Removing only the name entry does not necessarily remove the IP or SteamID entry.
Build 41 and Build 42 administration differences
Administrative access setup changed between the major builds referenced by current hosting guides. The moderation commands themselves should still be checked with the server’s own help output, but the way you grant or revoke administrator access can differ.

Build 42
Build 42 uses setaccesslevel rather than the older grantadmin approach described for Build 41. Set the player’s access level to admin using the command syntax shown by /help setaccesslevel. To revoke administrator access, set the level back to user.
Build 41
Build 41 guides describe the older access-level workflow and indicate that revoking access sets the level to none. Because command argument order and server wrappers can vary, use the Build 41 server’s help text or control-panel documentation for the exact grant and revoke command before changing privileges.
Do not copy a Build 41 privilege command into a Build 42 server, or vice versa, without checking the build. A failed privilege change can look like a ban-command failure because the account never received the rights required to moderate.
In-game menu versus console commands

For a connected player whose name is unambiguous, the Players menu is the safest way to perform an immediate kick. For a lasting restriction, prefer a verified SteamID64 command in the console so your record is tied to the account rather than a mutable name.
Common failures and how to correct them
“Unknown command” or no response
- Run
/helpand confirm whether your server useskickorkickuser. - If you are in a hosting panel, remove the leading slash and retry.
- Check that you are entering the command in an administrative console, not ordinary chat.
- Confirm that the server has finished loading and that you are connected to the intended instance.
“You do not have permission”
- Verify that the account issuing the command has administrator rights.
- Check whether the server is Build 41 or Build 42.
- On Build 42, review the
setaccesslevelaccess level; on Build 41, use the older privilege workflow documented for that build. - Reconnect after a privilege change if the server requires a fresh session before permissions take effect.
The name is not found
- Run
/playersand copy the name exactly as listed. - Quote names containing spaces.
- Remember that the player may have changed names; a SteamID64 is more reliable for a ban.
- If the player is offline, a name-based command may not match the stored ban entry unless you use the exact recorded name.
The banned player returns
- Check whether you created a name ban and the player simply changed names.
- Confirm that the SteamID64 contains no missing or transposed digits.
- Look for a separate IP or name entry if multiple restrictions were intended.
- Review the console response and server ban records rather than issuing repeated unverified commands.
An innocent player is affected by an IP ban
Shared networks, carrier-grade NAT and changing addresses can make IP restrictions broader or less stable than account bans. Remove the IP entry with /unbanip <IP-address> when appropriate, then use the verified SteamID restriction for the offending account.

A safe moderation workflow
- Identify the incident. Note the player’s displayed name, current behavior, time and relevant server evidence.
- Check the session. Run
/playersor open Esc → Players to confirm the connected account. - Choose the least restrictive action. Kick for a temporary removal; ban when the player should not reconnect.
- Prefer the SteamID64 for a lasting ban. Use
/banidafter verifying the complete identifier. - Use a name or IP ban only for a stated reason. Understand that names can change and IPs can be shared or changed.
- Record the action. Store the identifier, command, reason, administrator and timestamp.
- Confirm the result. Read the console response and, when safe, verify that the player cannot reconnect under the restricted identity.
- Review appeals consistently. When reversing a decision, remove every restriction that was actually created, not just the first one you remember.

- A kick disconnects a player but does not stop a later login.
- A SteamID64 ban is more difficult to evade than a name ban.
