Use /kick <playername> [reason] for a temporary removal. Use /ban <playername> when the player must be prevented from reconnecting; supported servers may accept an hour, day, week, or year timespan. Reverse a ban with /unban <playername>, and inspect active bans with /list banned.
You must be an administrator, or have the server-control privilege required by your setup. Because Vintage Story commands can change between versions and mods can add, remove, or alter commands, run the relevant /help command on your own server before copying syntax.

Choose the right action first
A kick disconnects a player now but normally allows that player to join again. A ban blocks the player from joining until the ban is removed or an accepted duration expires. The command you choose should match the incident, not merely how disruptive the player was in one moment.

These are moderation decisions for the server owner or staff team. The commands perform the technical action; they do not decide whether the action is fair or proportionate.

Check permissions and access
In-game administration
Vintage Story allows commands to be entered in-game when the player has administrator privileges. If the command returns a permission error, being logged into the server is not enough: your account needs the privilege that permits server control. An administrator reference lists controlserver among the common privileges associated with server management.
Do not assume that a privilege name, rank, or role from another server applies to yours. Open the command handbook and run /help privileges to see what the running server recognizes. If you are not an administrator, ask an authorized operator to perform the action rather than trying to work around the permission system.
Server console access
If you operate a dedicated server, the same commands can generally be entered through its server console or a hosting control panel’s console window. Console access is separate from an in-game character’s permissions, but the command parser still belongs to the running Vintage Story server. Enter the command without adding chat formatting or quotation marks around the entire line.
For a managed server, make sure you are viewing the live instance rather than a stopped, staging, or different-world console. A successful command in the wrong console will not affect the player on the server your community is using.
Confirm the exact syntax on your server
The Vintage Story Wiki command page notes that it was last verified for version 1.15. It also advises using the in-game command handbook because that information is generally more current. An administrator reference makes the same practical point: the running server is the final authority.

/help kick/help ban/help unban/help privileges
Read the usage line exactly as your server displays it. Loaded mods can add, remove, or change commands, arguments, permissions, and behavior. If the help text differs from an example in this article, follow the live help text and test with a harmless case when possible.
Kick a player
In-game procedure
- Join the server with an account that has administrator privileges or the required server-control privilege.
- Open the chat or command entry field.
- Type
/kick <playername>, replacing<playername>with the player’s actual server name. - Optionally add a short reason after the name, as in
/kick Steve Please rejoin after reading the rules. - Submit the command and confirm that the target player is disconnected.
The reason is optional. When supplied, the hosting guide documents that it is displayed to the player. Keep it factual and brief: identify the rule or immediate cause without publishing private information or escalating an argument in chat.
Console procedure
- Open the console for the active Vintage Story server.
- Run
/help kickif you have not checked the syntax on this installation. - Enter
/kick <playername>, with an optional reason. - Watch the console response for an unknown-player, permission, or syntax error.
- Ask the player to reconnect only after you have decided that reconnection is appropriate.
When a kick is enough
Use a kick when the immediate objective is to stop a session without imposing an ongoing restriction. Examples include removing someone who is flooding chat while staff investigate, disconnecting a player who joined the wrong event server, or ending a heated exchange before issuing a warning. If the same behavior continues after reconnection, apply your published escalation policy rather than repeatedly kicking without explanation.
Ban a player
Permanent or unspecified-duration bans
The basic form is /ban <playername>. Some installations accept a reason or duration after the player name; others may expose a different usage line through /help ban. Do not infer that an omitted duration has the same meaning on every version or modded server. Check the live command help first.

/Ban [Player Name] [Timespan (hour|day|week|year)] [Reason]
Its example is /ban Steve 1 year Uninvited. On a server that exposes this syntax, the duration units are hours, days, weeks, and years. The brackets in the documented form indicate replaceable arguments; do not type the brackets themselves.

If a timed command is rejected, do not keep changing the numbers at random. Run /help ban, copy the argument order shown there, and check whether a loaded mod has replaced the built-in command. A failed command does not prove that the player is banned.
Decide whether the duration is proportionate
- Short duration: useful for a cooling-off period or a first serious violation when you want a defined return point.
- Long duration: appropriate only when your rules justify keeping the restriction in place for an extended period.
- No stated duration: treat the result as a continuing restriction unless your server’s help text says otherwise, and document how an appeal or review works.
Publish your own escalation rules separately from the command syntax. Players should be able to understand what behavior leads to a kick, a temporary ban, or a longer restriction.
Verify the ban and inspect the list
Run /list banned after a ban to review the current ban list. Use it to confirm that the intended name appears and to identify an existing restriction before adding another one. The command is also useful when a player says a ban was lifted but still cannot connect.
- Execute
/list bannedfrom the game as an authorized administrator or from the server console. - Check the spelling and capitalization of the target name as displayed by your server.
- Review any duration or reason information the list provides.
- Record the date, administrator, reason, and expected expiry in your private moderation log.
The list is an operational check, not a substitute for your records. If the output does not show durations or reasons, keep those details in a separate log so future staff can interpret the decision.

Unban a player
Standard procedure
- Confirm that the request concerns the correct player account.
- Review the original reason and any appeal decision.
- Run
/unban <playername>from an authorized in-game account or the server console. - Run
/list bannedto verify that the name is no longer listed. - Tell the player when they may try to reconnect, and explain any conditions that still apply.
The command removes the player from the ban list; it does not automatically resolve a separate kick, whitelist rule, password issue, mod restriction, or network problem. If the player remains unable to connect, troubleshoot those systems independently.
Correct a mistaken ban
When two names are similar, first inspect the ban list and your moderation records. Unban only the account that was incorrectly restricted. If the intended player is still present, issue a new ban using the syntax and duration confirmed by /help ban, then document the correction so the sequence is clear to other administrators.
Troubleshoot common failures
Unknown command
Run /help and then /help ban, /help kick, or /help unban. A mod may have removed or renamed a command, or you may be connected to a server version whose command set differs from the reference you consulted.
No permission
Check your account’s administrator status and run /help privileges. Ask the server owner to grant the narrowly required privilege rather than broadening access indefinitely. If you are using a console, verify that you opened the console for the correct instance.
Player not found
Confirm the exact in-game name, including spaces or punctuation if your server permits them. The player may have disconnected before the command was submitted. Use the server’s player-list or help commands to identify the name format instead of guessing.
The player reconnects immediately after a kick
That is expected: a kick is a disconnection, not a continuing restriction. If the conduct warrants preventing re-entry, use the ban workflow and record the reason. If the player is being removed for a temporary technical issue, explain when it is safe to return.

A timed ban is rejected
Check the argument order and accepted units in /help ban. The hour/day/week/year form is documented by a March 1, 2026 procedure, but it is not guaranteed for every Vintage Story release or mod set. Try the exact capitalization and spacing shown by your live server, and remove the optional reason temporarily to isolate a syntax problem.

Verify the name is gone from /list banned. Then check for a second account, whitelist or allow-list settings, password protection, mod-specific restrictions, or a server restart requirement documented by that installation. Do not issue repeated unban commands without confirming which rule is blocking the connection.
Version and mod safety
Command examples found in older guides can be useful, but they are not a contract for your server. The Vintage Story Wiki page cited above was last verified for version 1.15, while the server procedure describing timed bans was updated March 1, 2026. Those dates explain why syntax may differ even when the command names look familiar.
Loaded mods can add, remove, or change commands. Treat the running server as the final authority: use the in-game handbook, read the returned usage text, and test changes in a controlled situation when the stakes are high. Keep a copy of your server version, mod list, and moderation policy in the staff documentation so a later administrator can reproduce the decision.
Build a fair moderation workflow
Before acting
- Identify the exact account and confirm that the incident occurred on your server.
- Capture relevant timestamps, chat excerpts, screenshots, or build coordinates privately.
- Check whether another administrator has already acted.
- Choose kick, temporary ban, or continuing ban according to written rules.
While acting
- Use the shortest reason that explains the immediate action.
- Do not argue through the reason field or disclose another player’s private information.
- Apply the command from the live server instance, not a test or stopped instance.
After acting
- Confirm the result with
/list bannedwhen a ban is involved. - Log the administrator, account name, command, reason, start time, and expiry or review date.
- Tell the player how to appeal, if your community offers appeals.
- Review long bans periodically so an old decision does not remain active solely because nobody checked it.
This workflow separates the technical operation from the policy decision. It also reduces mistaken identity, inconsistent punishment, and confusion when staff change.

Worked decisions
One disruptive incident
A player floods chat once, stops when warned, and has no prior record. A kick with a neutral reason may stop the disruption while leaving room for the player to return. Log the warning if your rules require progressive discipline.
Repeated griefing
A player repeatedly destroys builds after warnings. A ban is more appropriate because a kick alone permits immediate reconnection. Choose a duration your published rules support, include a concise reason, verify the entry with /list banned, and retain the evidence privately.
Mistaken identity
An administrator bans the wrong similarly named account. Inspect the list, run /unban <playername> for that account, verify removal, and document the correction. Do not leave the incorrect restriction in place while investigating.
Timed review
A one-week restriction is imposed using the syntax shown by the live help. Record the start and expected end time. When the review date arrives, check /list banned; if the server has not expired the entry automatically, apply your policy and use /unban <playername> when appropriate.
