The dependable setup is Paper running on Java 21, a fixed heap sized to the machine, the current Aikar’s G1GC flags, measured configuration changes, complete backups and cautious updates. Diagnose tick time and garbage-collection pauses before buying hardware; extra memory alone does not remove every cause of lag.

Start with a supportable baseline

Most performance guidance for a Minecraft Java server assumes Paper, a maintained server implementation with configuration controls and profiling support. Use a Java 21 runtime that your selected Paper build supports. Keep the server, Java runtime and plugins on versions you can identify and roll back; an unrecorded mixture of builds makes a term-long incident much harder to diagnose.

Use the official Paper Aikar’s Flags reference for the current startup line. The page is the authority for the complete flag set. Guides disagree about individual values, including G1ReservePercent, so do not copy a blog command unchanged.

Baseline choice What to do Why it matters
Server software Run the Paper build you have selected and record its version. Paper’s configuration and profiling advice is the common reference point for these optimizations.
Java Use Java 21 for a current Paper-family server. The recommended garbage-collector tuning is written for modern Java releases.
Heap Set -Xms and -Xmx to the same value, sized to the host. The JVM does not repeatedly resize the heap while the server is running.
Garbage collector Begin with the current Aikar flags for G1GC; consider ZGC only when the machine and workload justify a test. Collector choice depends on heap size, CPU topology and pause behavior.
Recovery Back up the complete server directory and test a restore. A world-only copy cannot restore plugin data, claims or economies.

Measure the actual bottleneck before changing hardware

“Lag” can mean a low server tick rate, a client-rendering problem, delayed network packets or a long pause while Java collects garbage. A server can have free memory and still miss its tick deadlines because one plugin or one expensive world operation consumes the tick.

Separate tick lag from garbage-collection pauses

  • Look at the server log around the incident and note long Java GC pauses, repeated warnings or a sudden change after a restart.
  • Use the Spark profiler installed for your Paper version to capture a representative period. Inspect which plugins, events or tasks consume the most tick time rather than guessing from plugin names.
  • Record the approximate player count, dimensions in use and what was happening when the slowdown occurred. A profile taken while nobody is online is not a useful comparison with a busy session.

If pauses dominate, tune the JVM and heap placement. If one task dominates the profile, investigate that plugin or operation. If the server is consistently busy without long pauses, reduce expensive world settings or plan a CPU upgrade.

Keep a before-and-after record

Change one setting at a time and keep the previous value in a dated note. Record the observed tick behavior, GC pauses and player load before and after the change. This prevents a collection of simultaneous edits from becoming impossible to reverse during a school term.

Set the Java heap and garbage collector deliberately

Choose a heap that fits the host

Do not allocate all physical RAM to Minecraft. The operating system, Java’s native memory, file cache, monitoring tools and other services need headroom. Set the minimum and maximum heap to the same value after allowing for those processes. The correct value depends on loaded worlds, plugins and concurrent players; profiling is more reliable than a generic “RAM per player” rule.

For example, this command demonstrates equal minimum and maximum heap settings:

java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar --nogui

Use the same structure with the amount that your measured server can sustain. In production, add the complete, current Aikar flag string from the Paper reference before -jar; do not substitute a copied command with an unknown revision. The example is not a recommendation that every server should use 4 GB.

G1GC with Aikar’s flags

For Java 17/21 Paper-family servers, Aikar’s G1GC flags remain the normal starting point. The flags adjust G1’s region sizing, reserve behavior and pause targets. Paper’s documentation mirror specifically advises changing only -Xms and -Xmx when adapting the published command. Copy the live page’s values because third-party guides contain conflicting entries, including different G1ReservePercent values.

When ZGC is worth a controlled test

One comparison in current guidance places ZGC on high-RAM hosts running Java 21 or later, while G1 with Aikar’s tuning remains the safer starting point for heaps up to roughly 8 GB and for single-core machines. Those are starting heuristics, not guarantees. Test the collector under the same player load and world activity, and keep the option that produces fewer disruptive pauses without creating CPU or memory pressure.

Situation Initial choice Test for
Heap up to about 8 GB or a single-core host G1GC with the current Aikar flags GC pause duration and missed ticks during representative activity.
High-RAM host with Java 21+ Evaluate ZGC alongside G1 Whether lower pauses offset any additional CPU or capacity cost.
Any host with unexplained lag Profile first; do not switch collectors blindly. Whether GC is actually the dominant source of tick loss.

Tune Paper and plugins before purchasing a larger machine

Reduce expensive world work gradually

Paper’s paper.yml and related configuration expose settings that directly affect how much work occurs around each player. The most important first checks are:

  • View distance: how many chunks the server sends around a player. Lowering it reduces chunk generation, loading and network work, but players see less terrain at once.
  • Simulation distance: how far entities, crops and other game logic continue to tick. Lowering it can reduce CPU work while leaving a larger visual area.
  • Activation ranges: the distances at which entity AI and related processing remain active. Lower values reduce work but can change mob behavior and farms.

Apply a modest change, restart if the setting requires it, then profile again. Do not make a dramatic reduction during an active session without telling players what will change. A setting that fixes tick time but breaks a redstone machine or farm is not a successful term-long configuration.

Find plugins that consume tick time

Use Spark’s profile to identify the plugin, event handler or scheduled task at the top of the tick-time report. Check its configuration and release notes, then test the change on a copy of the server. Remove duplicate functionality and disable features nobody uses. If a plugin is essential but consistently consumes the budget, contact its maintainer with a profile rather than compensating by endlessly increasing RAM.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep plugin jars, configuration files and their versions in the same backup set as the world. A plugin update can change data formats or permissions even when the Minecraft version has not changed.

Decide whether a hardware upgrade is justified

Upgrade only after profiling and configuration work identify a capacity limit. More RAM helps when the heap is genuinely too small or the host is swapping; it does not repair an inefficient plugin, excessive simulation distance or long collector pauses. For a CPU-bound server, single-thread performance and the cost of the busiest tick matter more than a large advertised core count.

  • Add memory when the measured heap is under pressure and the host still has enough capacity for the operating system and other services.
  • Choose a faster CPU when one or a few server threads are saturated while memory and GC behavior are healthy.
  • Add cores for headroom only when your plugins and other services can use them; extra cores do not automatically make the main game tick faster.
  • Move storage or the host when world saves, chunk generation or backups stall because of sustained I/O contention.

Back up the whole server, not just the world

What a recoverable backup contains

Copy the complete server data set, including:

  • Every world and dimension folder.
  • Paper and other server configuration files.
  • All plugin jars and plugin configuration/data folders.
  • Permission, claim, economy and other databases, whether they are files in the directory or separate database exports.
  • The startup script and a note of the Java, Paper and plugin versions.

Restoring only a world can leave land claims unclaimed, permissions missing or economy balances at zero because those records live outside the world folders.

Set a schedule that matches acceptable loss

A daily automated backup is a common baseline in hosting guidance. A busy server can run backups more often. Keep two or three known-good restore points so a corrupted newest copy does not become the only copy. These frequencies are operational defaults, not a guarantee; choose the interval by asking how much building or progress the community could afford to lose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make a consistent backup

  1. Announce a maintenance window and run stop from the server console. Waiting for a clean shutdown prevents a database or region file from being captured mid-write.
  2. Copy the entire server directory to storage separate from the live instance. On a Linux host, an archive can be created from a parent directory, for example:
    tar -czf /backups/minecraft-2026-10-14.tar.gz /srv/minecraft
  3. Record the date, server versions and the backup’s checksum or size. Keep the archive outside the directory being archived so the backup is not included in itself.
  4. Start the server and confirm that it reaches a normal ready state. Monitor the backup job for failures instead of assuming that a scheduled task completed.

Test a restore before you need one

Periodically restore an archive to a separate test directory, never over the live server. Start it with players disconnected, confirm that worlds load, permissions still work, claims remain owned and economy data is present, then stop and remove the test instance. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption of recoverability.

Update without losing the world

Prepare the change

  1. Write down the current Paper, Java and plugin versions.
  2. Take a fresh complete backup of worlds, server configuration, plugin configuration and plugin jars.
  3. Check every required plugin for compatibility with the target Minecraft and Paper versions. Delay the update if a critical plugin has no compatible release or documented migration path.
  4. Read the target Paper release notes and stage the update in a separate directory when practical.

Run the first startup safely

Start the updated server with no players connected and watch the complete log. The first startup after a major Minecraft update can be slower because world data is converted. Let that conversion finish; repeatedly restarting during it can leave you unsure whether the process is progressing.

After the server reaches a ready state, inspect warnings and errors, join with an administrator account, verify permissions and essential plugins, and check a representative area of each world. Stop and correct problems before inviting everyone back. A clean test restart after those checks gives you a known state for normal operation.

Understand auto-update limits

Third-party scripts that launch Paper with Aikar’s flags can automate starting the server, but they do not make Minecraft-version upgrades safe by themselves. Pair any automated updater with a pre-update backup, plugin compatibility checks and a rollback directory. Never let an unattended script overwrite your only working server copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical school-term operating checklist

Before the term

  • Record versions, Java options, heap size and important configuration values.
  • Profile a normal workload and save the report for comparison.
  • Confirm that automated backups complete and perform a test restore.
  • Remove obsolete plugins and verify that essential plugins have a compatible update path.

During the term

  • Watch logs and profiler results when players report lag; do not respond to every report by adding RAM.
  • Keep the backup schedule running and verify that retention still leaves multiple restore points.
  • Make configuration changes one at a time, note the old value and re-profile under comparable activity.
  • Schedule updates only after a fresh backup and a plugin compatibility check.

When a slowdown appears

  1. Check whether the server is still ticking slowly after a GC pause or whether one task is consuming tick time.
  2. Capture a Spark profile during the problem.
  3. If configuration or a plugin is responsible, revert the last change or disable the offending feature on a test copy.
  4. If the workload is consistently CPU- or memory-bound after tuning, use the measurements to specify the hardware upgrade.

Common failure modes and recovery
