On a trusted personal device, Google keeps your account signed in until you sign out. If you keep having to sign in again, check that cookies are allowed, update your browser, and look for software that may be deleting cookies. On a public or borrowed device, do the opposite: use a private window and close it when you finish.

How a Google sign-in session works

Google Account Help says, “When you sign in to your Google Account, you’ll stay signed in until you sign out.” Your browser’s cookies help websites remember a session. If cookies are blocked or deleted, Google may no longer recognize that you’re signed in. Google’s stay-signed-in guidance explains the basic behavior and troubleshooting steps.

This applies to signing in to Google websites and services. Signing into Chrome itself is a separate, optional choice; it is not required to keep Google website cookies enabled.

Fix repeated sign-outs on your own device

  1. Check the account and browsing mode. Confirm you’re signing in to the intended Google Account. If you’re using a private or incognito window on your own device, its temporary session data is removed after you close all private windows; use a regular browser window if you want to remain signed in.
  2. Allow cookies. In Chrome on a computer, open Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies and review the cookie setting. Cookie controls differ in other browsers. Google notes that cookie settings can affect Google Accounts as well as third-party apps. See Google’s cookie settings instructions.
  3. Check whether security or cleanup software removes cookies. Antivirus and related software can be configured to clear browsing data, including cookies. Review its cleanup or privacy settings if cookies appear to disappear between visits.
  4. Update your browser. Google recommends using the latest browser version when troubleshooting sign-in persistence.
  5. Clear the browser cache if cookies are already allowed. Google recommends clearing the cache as a troubleshooting step. Be aware that clearing cookies may sign you out of websites and remove saved site preferences, so you may need to sign in again. Google provides instructions for clearing Chrome browsing data. If Chrome sync is on, Google says you remain signed in to the Google Account being synced in order to delete data across devices.
  6. If you use two-step verification, consider adding a trusted computer. Google lists this as a step that may help with repeated verification or sign-in prompts. It is not a guarantee that every cause of sign-outs will be fixed.

Keep Google separate from Chrome sign-in

When you sign in to a Google service such as Gmail, Chrome may ask whether you also want to sign in to the browser. That choice affects the Chrome profile, not whether cookies are allowed for Google websites. Google says you can select Sign in, Don’t sign in, or Ask every time in Chrome’s Google Services settings. See Google’s explanation of Chrome sign-in for the current controls.

Use a different approach on a shared device

Do not make a public or borrowed computer your persistent sign-in device. Google recommends private browsing when using a device that is not yours. Open a private window, sign in to the Google service there, and close all private windows when finished; Google says the private-window cookies are deleted once all such windows are closed. If private browsing is unavailable, Google advises clearing cache and cookies before and after use. See Google’s guidance for signing in on someone else’s device.

Sign out of a device you no longer have

If your Google Account is still open on a device you can’t access, use your Google Account’s device controls to sign out remotely. If you saved your password on someone else’s device, Google advises changing the password and making sure that device is signed out. Start with Google’s device and session management instructions.
