Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted 7 Days to Die servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
A normal 7 Days to Die dedicated-server restart should not reset your world to day 1. The current day, time, weather and blood-moon counter are stored in the world save, primarily in main.ttp. A reset almost always means the server loaded a different save folder, generated a new save, or failed to use the latest world file. Save deliberately before stopping, keep the existing GameWorld and GameName, and verify the loaded path in the startup log after the process returns.
Why a restart normally preserves the day
The day counter belongs to the saved world rather than to the running server process. The world-level file main.ttp contains the current day and time, weather state and blood-moon counter. Stopping and starting the process therefore should continue the same timeline, provided the server opens the same playable save.

A single playable world is stored beneath this directory pattern:
<saves-root>/<GameWorld>/<GameName>/
GameWorld identifies the world or terrain, while GameName identifies the particular save within that world. The effective <saves-root> is not necessarily the platform’s default. A UserDataFolder or SaveGameFolder setting can override it. If either the root or either name changes, the server may open another directory or create a fresh world whose counter naturally starts at day 1.

Use this graceful restart procedure
Do the following whenever you need to restart without risking recent progress. The command names are the standard dedicated-server console commands; a hosting panel may expose them through a console box or scheduled task instead.
- Warn players and stop new activity. Ask everyone to leave dangerous areas, stop building or trading, and wait while the save completes. Do not allow players to keep changing the world during the shutdown sequence.
- Connect to the server console or an authenticated local administrator connection. Use the interface that has permission to issue dedicated-server commands. A panel’s ordinary restart button is only safe if it performs the same save and graceful shutdown sequence.
- Force a world save. Enter
saveworldand wait for the server’s completion message or corresponding log entry. This writes current world state, including changes made since the last automatic save, before the process exits. - Shut down through the server. Enter
shutdownaftersaveworldhas finished. Let the process close normally. Do not terminate the process, close the host abruptly, or kill the service while it is writing files. - Let the supervisor restart it. A service manager, container supervisor or hosting panel can start the process again. If you are restarting manually, launch it with the same configuration that was used for the established world.
- Read the startup log before reconnecting players. Confirm that the log identifies the intended
GameWorldandGameName. Also verify that it is using the expected save root when the platform reports that information. - Check the day before resuming play. Join briefly or inspect the server status. If the world reports day 1 or another obviously old value, stop the server immediately and diagnose the path before anyone makes further changes.
The important distinction is between a restart and an ungraceful termination. A restart reopens the same saved world; a forced kill can leave the newest changes unwritten and can complicate recovery.
Confirm the server is pointing at the established save
Check the effective configuration, not just the command line or panel label. Different hosts and server versions expose these values in different places, and a panel can override a file you edited manually.

| Item | What to retain | What a mismatch does |
|---|---|---|
GameWorld |
The existing world or terrain name used by the established save | Can make the server look in a different world directory or generate another world |
GameName |
The existing save name, unchanged from the working configuration | Can select a different save or create a new day-1 save |
UserDataFolder |
The same effective user-data root as before the restart | Can redirect the server away from the save you have been playing |
SaveGameFolder |
The same save-root override, if configured | Can supersede the default location and expose an empty directory |
| Save directory | <saves-root>/<GameWorld>/<GameName>/ containing the established files |
A missing or newly created directory produces a different world timeline |
| World counter | The main.ttp file from the established save |
A missing, stale or wrong-copy file can show an old or day-1 counter |
When you inspect a file manager, start from the root actually used by the running server. Do not assume that a similarly named folder under a user profile, installation directory or backup location is the active one. The directory names must match the configured GameWorld and GameName exactly as they appear in the server configuration and startup output.
Why a server can come back at day 1
A new GameName was supplied
Changing only the save name is enough to make the server select another directory. If that directory does not yet contain a playable world, the server creates one and its counter begins at day 1. This commonly happens when a panel’s startup profile is recreated, a command-line value is edited, or a test save name is left in place.
The GameWorld no longer matches
The save path includes both the world name and the save name. Pointing at a different terrain or world identifier can therefore select a different branch of saves even when the visible save name looks familiar. Restore the previously working world value before starting again.

An override changed the save root
UserDataFolder and SaveGameFolder can change where the server looks. A host migration, update, container rebuild or panel setting may activate an override that sends the process to an empty or older root. Compare the effective value before and after the restart rather than checking only the default directory.
main.ttp is missing or stale
If the active directory contains an incomplete copy, the world-level counter may not reflect the session you just ended. Skipping saveworld, interrupting the process during a write, or restoring only part of a save can leave the active copy behind the established one. A stale file can make the day appear to jump backward even though the server did not intentionally reset it.
The panel restarted too quickly
A scheduler or supervisor can be configured to stop and start the process without first issuing a save command. The process may return successfully while the final minutes of play are absent. This is different from selecting a new world, but it can look like a rollback when players compare the displayed day and recent construction.

What to do when the day is already 1
Do not let players continue in the apparent new world. Every additional action can make it harder to identify which copy is the established save.
- Stop the server cleanly. Use the console or panel’s graceful stop function. If it is still running the wrong world, do not issue gameplay commands or allow connections.
- Record the active configuration. Copy the values for
GameWorld,GameName,UserDataFolderandSaveGameFolder, along with the relevant startup-log lines. These records show which path the failed start actually used. - Locate the established save. Search the known storage locations for the existing
<GameWorld>/<GameName>directory and itsmain.ttp. Compare modification times and surrounding files with your last known-good copy, but do not edit the original while investigating. - Correct the path and names. Restore the previous world name, save name and effective root. If a panel stores settings separately from a configuration file, change the value in the panel that actually launches the process.
- Use a known-good backup when needed. If the active
main.ttpis missing, clearly stale or from the newly generated world, stop and restore the complete save from an untouched backup or snapshot. Copying one file into an otherwise unrelated directory can leave the save inconsistent; preserve the original before replacing anything. - Start once and verify. Read the startup log, confirm the intended identifiers, then check the displayed day before reopening the server to players.
If no backup contains the established main.ttp, recovery may be limited to whatever state remains in the active save. Do not claim success merely because the server starts; the decisive checks are the loaded identifiers and the expected world counter.
Choose a restart method by its safeguards
Manual restarts, hosting-panel schedules and custom service jobs can all work. The method matters less than whether it saves first, stops gracefully and makes the selected save visible in logs.

| Restart method | Advantages | Questions to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Manual console restart | Direct control over saveworld, shutdown and the order of checks |
Will an administrator always issue both commands, and can the startup log be reviewed before players return? |
| Hosting-panel scheduler | Can run on a timetable and automatically bring the service back | Does the task send saveworld before stopping, use a graceful termination, retain logs, and preserve the same configuration profile? |
| Custom service, systemd or cron job | Flexible automation and integration with local monitoring or snapshots | Does the job authenticate to the server console, wait for save completion, avoid killing the process, restart the same command line, and report failures? |
Do not assume that every panel uses the same path, command interface or shutdown behavior. Test an automated restart during a maintenance window, inspect the resulting log, and document the effective save root. If the automation cannot prove that saveworld completed, treat it as an unsafe stop rather than a guaranteed save.
Back up the world before changing anything
The dedicated server has no built-in versioning, so a path mistake or update mistake can remove your easiest recovery route. The save-migration guidance recommends retaining an unmodified copy of both client and server saves and taking regular snapshots.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Keep an untouched baseline. Preserve a complete copy of the established save, including
main.ttpand the other files in the<saves-root>/<GameWorld>/<GameName>/directory. Do not use this copy as a working directory. - Snapshot before updates and migrations. Make a new snapshot before changing the server version, moving storage, changing a panel profile or editing save-root overrides.
- Separate current and recovery copies. Store backups where an automated cleanup task or a mistaken path cannot overwrite them. Label each copy with the date and the configuration it represents.
- Restore the whole save when possible. A complete known-good directory is safer than mixing individual files from different points in time. Keep the original failed copy until the restored world has been verified.
- Test the backup process. A backup that cannot be identified or restored is not a practical rollback. Periodically confirm that the copy contains the expected world and save names and that its
main.ttpis present.
Maintenance checklist
Use this short checklist before and after every planned restart:
- Players have been warned and new activity has stopped.
saveworldwas issued through an authenticated console or a task known to send that command.- The save-completion message or log entry was observed.
shutdownwas used instead of killing the process.- The same
GameWorld,GameName,UserDataFolderandSaveGameFoldervalues are configured. - The service supervisor or panel restarted the intended server profile.
- The startup log names the established world and save.
- The displayed day was checked before players rejoined.
- A recent, untouched backup or snapshot is available.
Important limits and version differences
Save roots, configuration labels, server versions, mods and hosting-panel implementations can vary. A panel may place settings in a web form, a generated startup command or an environment file rather than in the file you expect. Treat the path shown by the running process and its startup log as authoritative for that installation.
Mods or version changes can also alter which files are present or how a save is migrated. Before an update, preserve the complete save and record the working configuration. If the post-update server reports day 1, first rule out a changed path or newly generated save before assuming that the update erased the world.
Key takeaway
Restarting the process is safe for the day counter when it reopens the same world save. Save with saveworld, stop with shutdown, retain the established GameWorld and GameName, check any save-root overrides, and verify the startup log before players return. A day-1 screen is a signal to stop and correct the loaded path or restore a known-good save—not proof that an ordinary restart inherently resets the world.
