A converted assembly can look intact even after a vertex weld has damaged its topology. In a reported STEP-to-mesh workflow, welding all vertices after tessellating individual solids merged vertices at part interfaces; triangles there collapsed and were removed. The exterior still looked plausible because the missing faces were inside the assembly. The practical safeguard is to keep cleanup scoped to each solid and validate topology after every assembly-level combine.

What went wrong in the reported conversion

Amine Fakiri described a STEP assembly containing 108 solids. Each solid reportedly tessellated as closed and manifold, but after the meshes were combined and globally welded, 84 triangles disappeared. Fakiri attributed the missing triangles to interfaces where parts touched. The figures and causal sequence are the author’s account, not an independently reproduced result. Read the author’s October 1, 2026 post.

The important distinction is between coordinates and topology. Two parts can have vertices at the same location while remaining separate solids that each need their own closed surface. A global proximity weld can merge those vertices across the part boundary. If a triangle’s corners then collapse to repeated vertices, the triangle may be removed. Internal faces can disappear without changing the assembly’s visible outer silhouette.

That is why a conversion that completes successfully—or a shaded preview that appears correct—does not prove the mesh is closed, manifold, or suitable for its next use. The incident report also describes downstream applications exposing the problem, but those observations are specific to the author’s workflow.

Why a weld can remove geometry

A weld merges vertices that fall within a distance threshold. Autodesk’s 3ds Max 2012 Vertex Weld Modifier reference says the merged vertex is placed at the average position of the vertices, and associated faces and edges are often removed. The operation can weld vertices across separate elements within an object, so a weld is not inherently limited to points that belong to the same part. Autodesk: Vertex Weld Modifier.

The threshold is expressed in scene units in that modifier. Autodesk warns, “If the threshold is set too high, the mesh will begin to deform.” The reference’s default threshold of 0.1 applies to that particular 3ds Max modifier; it is not a universal safe value for other software, model scales, or conversion pipelines.

At an assembly interface, coincident vertices may be geometrically close but topologically distinct. A global weld treats proximity as permission to merge, potentially changing which faces and components exist. Whether this is a defect depends on the intended result: joining parts into one topology may be deliberate, but preserving independent solids requires a narrower cleanup scope.

How to diagnose and prevent cross-solid damage

  1. Preserve a source copy and record a baseline. Before conversion, note the expected solid or component count and available mesh statistics, such as vertex, triangle, and boundary counts. Keep the original assembly unchanged so a repair or cleanup step can be reversed.
  2. Tessellate and check each solid separately. Validate individual mesh outputs before concatenating them. This helps distinguish a tessellation defect from damage introduced when separate solids are combined or cleaned up.
  3. Limit welding to the intended solid. Weld within each solid when that is the desired cleanup, rather than applying a single proximity weld across all assembly geometry. Use a cross-assembly weld only when joining those parts into shared topology is intentional.
  4. Compare topology after each combine or cleanup stage. Check that component counts and mesh statistics remain plausible, and inspect boundaries and degenerate faces. Autodesk Alias Mesh Repair documents checks for degeneracy, manifoldness, orientation, self-intersection, and folded edges, along with triangle, vertex, boundary, and component information. Autodesk Alias: Mesh Repair.
  5. Inspect flagged locations rather than trusting shading. Boundary visualization and sequential repair checks can help locate defects hidden inside an assembly. Keep the original mesh: repair tools may remove troublesome triangles, so review what a repair changes before accepting it.
  6. Test tolerance on a copy at the model’s actual scale. Use the units and size of the geometry to choose a threshold, and inspect whether details move, merge, or disappear. Do not raise the threshold merely until a file appears connected.
  7. Validate at the conversion boundary. A downstream CAD application or slicer may reveal a defect, but checking immediately after conversion makes it easier to identify which operation caused it and avoids passing a damaged mesh along.

What a preview and downstream import can—and cannot—tell you

A shaded preview is useful for spotting large visible defects, but it is weak evidence about internal boundaries or manifoldness. For assembly meshes, pair visual inspection with explicit topology checks and expected component counts.

Autodesk’s 2023 3ds Max STL support article describes disabling import-time welding and welding manually later as a way to address slow imports. That is a workflow option, not evidence that import-time welding is the cause of every defect or a direct fix for cross-solid topology loss. Autodesk: STL import performance.

For Direct3D rendering workflows, Microsoft’s DirectXMesh documentation describes vertex welding and clean/validate functions. Those are tools for geometry prepared for rendering; their existence does not establish that a particular CAD assembly conversion preserves separate solid topology automatically. Separate performance claims from topology evidence

Fakiri also reported that sewing time fell from 655 seconds to 28 seconds after correcting a separate mesher-argument error. That is an unverified result from the same account and a different issue; it should not be treated as an expected speedup from changing weld scope. A faster conversion and a valid mesh are separate outcomes, and each needs its own check.
