The most reliable way to find upcoming indie showcases is to use a layered routine: check Steamworks for Valve-run dates, scan a broad indie-event directory for additional opportunities, filter a festival catalogue by month or theme, and then verify every candidate on the organizer’s own page. Put the show date, time zone, platform or venue, eligibility, and any submission milestones in separate calendar entries. This avoids the two common mistakes—missing an application deadline and treating an old directory listing as a confirmed event.
Start with the right tracking goal
“Upcoming indie events” covers several different things: Steam festivals, publisher showcases, livestreams, demo events, press previews, and in-person conventions. A player usually needs the broadcast time and a way to watch or follow games afterward. A developer also needs registration, asset, review, and eligibility dates that may occur weeks before the public show.
| Who you are | Primary dates to save | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Player | Broadcast or festival opening and closing times; platform; on-demand viewing information | Official event page, Steam event page, organizer announcement |
| Developer | Application or registration deadline; store-page and demo requirements; asset and review milestones; public event dates | Steamworks participation documentation and the organizer’s call for submissions |
| Press, creator, or curator | Press-preview access, review-build cutoff, broadcast time, embargo or contact instructions | Organizer or publisher media information, plus the official event listing |
Keep these audiences separate in your calendar. A festival can open on one day while its registration closed months earlier.
Use Steamworks for Valve-run events
Steamworks is the first stop for Steam Next Fest dates and participation rules. Valve’s October 2026 documentation lists the festival from October 19 at 10:00 AM PDT through October 26 at 10:00 AM PDT. The same official schedule lists the following editions as February 22–March 1, 2027, and June 14–21, 2027.

These dates are time-sensitive. Recheck the current Steamworks upcoming-events schedule before creating a long-term reminder, because Valve can update dates, requirements, or participation instructions.
Valve describes Steam Next Fest as “an opportunity to get early feedback from players and build an audience for a future launch on Steam.” That purpose explains why a Next Fest listing is not simply a livestream appointment: participating games need a playable public presence and a plan for gathering player interest.
What the October 2026 rules require
For the October 2026 edition, Valve’s documentation required an upcoming game with a public Steam store page and a publicly playable demo. The game also had to release after the festival, and a title could participate in only one Steam Next Fest. Those are edition-specific rules, not a promise that every future edition will use identical wording.
Developers should read the eligibility section for the specific edition they intend to enter. A game that already released, lacks a public store page, or has no publicly playable demo may fail the requirements even if its team is otherwise ready for the festival.
Separate the October 2026 milestones
Valve’s October 2026 documentation gave several dates before the public opening. Save each as its own calendar item:
- August 31, 2026: registration deadline.
- September 14, 2026: press-preview review milestone.
- September 28, 2026: review milestone.
- October 19, 2026, 10:00 AM PDT: festival opens.
- October 26, 2026, 10:00 AM PDT: festival closes.
The registration, press-preview, and review dates are not interchangeable with the show dates. Missing an earlier milestone can prevent participation even when the demo would be ready by October 19.
Add a broad indie-event directory for discovery
Official Steamworks pages cover Valve’s own events, not every publisher showcase, themed festival, regional gathering, or independent online presentation. Use a broad directory as a discovery layer, then verify the result elsewhere.

IndieCtrl
IndieCtrl’s event directory spans themed Steam events, online showcases, and in-person opportunities. Listings display the event month and, in many cases, a closing date and a link to the event page. This makes it useful for building a candidate list several months ahead, especially when you are looking beyond Steam Next Fest.
Do not treat the directory as the final authority. Open the linked organizer page and check whether the call is still open, whether the date changed, and whether the event is a showcase, a submission-based festival, or an in-person gathering with different requirements.
CanopyFest
CanopyFest provides a filterable catalogue of Steam festivals organized by month, country, and theme. Use those filters when a general list is too broad—for example, when you want a narrative-focused event in a particular month or a festival serving a specific region.
CanopyFest also offers a game-matching path, which can help a developer identify festivals that fit a project’s genre or audience. Matching is a discovery aid, not an acceptance decision; eligibility and submission instructions still come from the organizer.
Follow organizers and publishers directly
Directories are valuable because they aggregate information, but organizer and publisher channels are where late changes usually appear. Follow the accounts, newsletters, Steam pages, or community channels associated with events that fit your interests.
For example, the Steam page for Fellow Traveller’s Story-Rich Showcase identifies it as a showcase for narrative-driven indie games and invites visitors to follow the page for updates. Its listed broadcast took place in June 2026, so it demonstrates a useful follow channel rather than proving that another edition is currently upcoming. Treat every dated listing in this way: confirm the current edition before marking it as future.
For publisher events, look for an official announcement that states the broadcast date, time zone, platform, and whether the presentation will remain available on demand. A publisher’s social post can point you toward an event, but the publisher’s event page or stream listing should be the record you use for the calendar.

Verify a listing before you rely on it
Use this check whenever a directory, social post, or calendar surfaces a promising event:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Identify the organizer. Record the company, festival team, publisher, or community group responsible for the event.
- Open the official event page. Confirm that the page refers to the edition and year you intend to track.
- Confirm the date and time zone. Record the stated zone—such as PDT—rather than converting it from memory. If the page gives only a local time, note the location alongside it.
- Confirm the format. Distinguish a livestream, a Steam festival page, an on-demand video, a playable demo period, and an in-person event. They have different participation and viewing steps.
- Check eligibility. Look for platform, release-window, genre, country, age, demo, store-page, or submission requirements.
- Find every deadline. Registration, game-build, asset, press-preview, review, and ticket deadlines may be separate.
- Save the official reference and check date. Keep the event page name and the date you last verified it in your notes.
If the official page does not state a value, write “not stated” in your tracking record instead of guessing. A blank time zone or an inferred deadline is a warning to check again later.
Build a calendar record that survives changes
A single all-day reminder titled “indie showcase” is not enough. Use one event record with structured fields, then create separate reminders for actions that have different consequences.
Fields to capture
- Event name and edition: include the year so an old listing cannot be mistaken for the next one.
- Organizer: the festival, publisher, platform holder, or production team.
- Show date and time: include the original time zone.
- Broadcast or venue: stream platform, Steam event page, physical location, or a combination.
- Submission deadline: only when a developer call is open.
- Eligibility: release timing, public store page, demo status, genre, region, or other stated conditions.
- Official event reference: the organizer’s page or official Steam listing.
- Date last checked: useful for volatile schedules and directories.
Use separate reminders
- Create a reminder for the application or registration deadline.
- Create a second reminder for the last asset or build milestone.
- Create a third reminder for the public opening, with the original time zone in the title.
- Add a follow-up reminder near the closing date if demos, streams, or replays will disappear.
- Set a review reminder a few weeks before the event to re-open the official page and look for changes.
For the October 2026 Next Fest example, a developer would therefore create at least four entries: August 31 registration, September 14 press-preview review, September 28 review, and the October 19–26 festival window. A player who only wants to watch needs the October 19 opening and the October 26 closing, plus any broadcast start time announced separately.
Choose the right source for the job
| Source | Coverage | Filters or detail | Deadline value | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steamworks official upcoming-events pages | Valve-run Steam events | Edition dates and participation documentation | Strong for rules and official milestones when published | Authoritative scheduling for Steam Next Fest |
| IndieCtrl directory | Broader indie festivals, themed Steam events, showcases, and some in-person events | Month; many listings include closing dates and event links | Often shown, but verify with the organizer | Discovering opportunities beyond Valve’s calendar |
| CanopyFest catalogue | Steam festivals | Month, country, theme, and a game-matching path | Use the linked event page for final deadlines | Narrowing festivals by geography or theme |
| Organizer or publisher pages | One event or event series | Official time, format, eligibility, and updates | Most reliable for the current call or broadcast | Final verification and reminders |
No reviewed source establishes one complete calendar for every indie showcase, publisher livestream, and regional event. The layered approach is deliberate: use aggregation to find possibilities and the organizer to establish what is actually happening.
A developer workflow for the months before an event
1. Define the project’s event fit
Write down the game’s expected release window, platform, genre, region, demo status, and whether its store page can be public. Compare those facts with the specific event’s eligibility language before spending time on an application.
2. Track the public-facing prerequisites
For Steam Next Fest, the October 2026 rules required a public store page and publicly playable demo, an upcoming release after the fest, and one-time participation for the title. Treat each prerequisite as a task with its own owner and due date rather than as a last-minute checklist.

3. Work backward from the earliest deadline
Start with registration, then schedule the build and asset work needed for any press-preview or review milestone. A demo that is technically finished after registration may still miss the opportunity.
4. Recheck after submission
Keep watching the official event page after registering. Organizers may clarify review windows, asset formats, or event-page requirements. Record the date of each check so teammates know which instructions were current.
5. Preserve the event window for player support
During the festival, monitor the demo, community channels, and store-page information. The point of a Next Fest appearance is not only visibility; Valve frames it as a chance to obtain early player feedback and build an audience for a future Steam launch.

- Start with Steamworks when you want the next official Steam festival dates.
- Use IndieCtrl or CanopyFest to find themed showcases and events that match your genres or regions.
- Open the organizer or publisher page and confirm the broadcast date, time zone, platform, and replay availability.
- Follow the official event page if it offers updates, as the Story-Rich Showcase page does for its narrative-focused presentation.
- Add the show to your calendar with the time zone in the title and a second reminder shortly before it starts.
- After the broadcast, check the event or Steam page for demos, wish-list opportunities, and on-demand viewing details where offered.
Do not assume that a directory’s month label is a broadcast date. Some entries describe a submission window or a festival period rather than a single livestream.
How to handle publisher events and regional shows
Publisher presentations can be announced independently of Steam festivals. Search the publisher’s official news, video, community, and store channels for the event name, then verify the time and viewing platform on the publisher-controlled listing. Save the publisher as the organizer even if the broadcast is hosted elsewhere.
Regional and in-person events need additional fields: city and venue, admission or registration status, local time, exhibitor application deadline, and whether a digital stream exists. A calendar entry that says only “September showcase” is not actionable for someone who must travel or submit a build.

Common tracking failures and fixes
Confusing a festival date with a submission deadline
Symptom: the team plans to apply on opening day. Fix: create separate deadline and show entries and work backward from the earliest one.
Relying on an old edition
Symptom: a page mentions June 2026 but the calendar labels it as an upcoming event. Fix: check the year, the last-updated information, and the organizer’s current announcement. The June 2026 listing for the Story-Rich Showcase is an example of why an event page can document a past broadcast without confirming a future edition.
Ignoring the time zone
Symptom: a team misses a 10:00 AM PDT opening because the calendar converted it incorrectly. Fix: preserve the source time zone in the event title and verify the conversion on the day.
Recommended Free Tools
Assuming a directory is exhaustive
Symptom: no listing is treated as proof that no event exists. Fix: combine Steamworks, a broad directory, a filtered festival catalogue, and direct organizer or publisher follows.
Saving only one reminder
Symptom: a developer remembers the livestream but misses registration or review. Fix: create distinct alerts for application, asset, review, opening, and closing dates.
A maintenance routine that stays current
Review your confirmed-event calendar at a fixed cadence—weekly during an active submission season and at least monthly when planning farther out. On each review, open the official page, confirm the edition and year, check for revised times or requirements, and update the “last checked” field.
Keep three lists:
- Confirmed: the organizer has stated the date and format.
- Action required: an application, asset, demo, ticket, or review milestone is open.
- Watch: a directory or publisher has signaled an event, but the official date or format is not yet confirmed.
This status system prevents a speculative listing from triggering the same reminders as a confirmed broadcast. It also lets you scan broadly without claiming that any directory covers every indie event.
