Brave’s Android browser has a background video playback setting that can let supported web media keep playing when you switch apps or lock the screen. It does not override restrictions imposed by a particular website or streaming service, so it is not a guaranteed way to keep every video—especially YouTube—playing in the background.
What Brave’s Android background playback setting does
Brave’s Android video troubleshooting guidance tells users to check the background video playback setting when a website’s video is not working as expected. In practice, it is a browser playback option for supported web media, not a promise that every site will continue playing after Brave is minimized or the phone is locked. A website or service may apply its own restrictions.
Brave’s troubleshooting article, dated July 12, 2022, refers to the setting but does not establish a current menu path for every app version. Open Brave’s current Settings and search for background video playback or look under media-related settings. If the label or location differs, use Brave’s current in-app settings rather than assuming an older menu path still applies. Brave’s Android video troubleshooting guidance

Brave’s help article also suggests trying YouTube in desktop-site mode as a troubleshooting step. To try it, open the page’s browser menu and choose the desktop-site option if it appears. Treat this as a diagnostic, not a fix: it may not work, and the site can change how it handles playback.

Why YouTube may still stop playing
The browser setting and a service’s playback rules are separate. A setting in Brave cannot guarantee background playback when the service blocks it. In a report dated February 3, 2026, Android Central said Google had closed a browser workaround that had allowed some non-Premium users to play YouTube in the background on mobile. That report describes YouTube’s service behavior, not the removal of Brave’s general Android setting. Android Central’s February 2026 report
So, if YouTube pauses when you leave Brave or lock the screen, changing the browser setting or requesting the desktop site may not restore playback. The result can depend on YouTube’s current behavior and your account or playback context; do not rely on Brave as a way to bypass YouTube’s restrictions.

Brave Playlist is a different feature
Brave Playlist is for saving media to play later, including in the background or offline. It is separate from ordinary Android background video playback. Brave’s current Help Center pages list Playlist for iOS mobile and desktop Nightly, and explicitly say it is not available on Android mobile. Brave Help Center: How do I use Brave Playlist?
