Use a different Chrome profile for each Google Account on a desktop. Profiles keep bookmarks, history, passwords and other Chrome settings apart, which is stronger than switching accounts inside one profile. On iPhone and iPad, switch to the correct account or use the separate managed work space. Android Chrome has one profile, so use separate Android users or your organization’s work profile when you need stronger separation.
Separation is not automatic privacy. Chrome Sync, Web & App Activity, device access and shared-computer permissions can still expose information. Set up the right browsing space, check what each account syncs, and protect the device itself.
What “separate Google accounts” actually requires
A Google Account and a Chrome profile are related but different. The account identifies you to Google services. The profile is the local Chrome space that holds browser data such as bookmarks, history, passwords and other settings. If two accounts use the same profile, that profile can retain cookies, saved data and a shared sync context even when you switch the account currently open on a Google website.
Google Chrome Help describes profiles as a way to keep “bookmarks, history, passwords and other settings” separate and specifically presents them as useful for keeping work and personal information apart. On desktop, therefore, the dependable pattern is one profile for each account, with the matching account signed in only inside that profile.

On mobile, the available controls differ. Chrome on iPhone and iPad lets you switch accounts. When a managed work account is used, Google says work tabs, history and passwords remain within that work browsing space. Chrome on Android supports one profile, so a second Android user or an organization-managed work profile is the stronger option when the two identities must not share a browser space.

Choose the strongest method that fits how often you switch and who can unlock the device. A personal desktop normally needs two Chrome profiles. A phone used by one person may only need careful account switching, while a phone that combines employer and personal data benefits from a managed work profile or separate Android user.
Set up separate Chrome profiles on a desktop
Use this arrangement for a work account and a personal account, or for any two identities whose browser data should not mix.
- Open the profile menu. In Chrome, select the profile icon.
- Create the first dedicated space. Choose Add Chrome profile.
- Give it an unmistakable identity. Assign a clear name and a distinct color, such as “Work” and “Personal.” The visual difference reduces the chance of saving a password or bookmark in the wrong space.
- Sign in only to the matching Google Account. In the work profile, sign in to the work account; in the personal profile, sign in to the personal account. Avoid signing both identities into Chrome within the same profile.
- Repeat for the other account. Create or select the second profile and give it its own name and color.
- Open work and personal browsing from the corresponding profile. Start a new window in the correct profile before visiting Gmail, Drive, Calendar or other services. Account switching on a website is not a substitute for choosing the right profile.
- Keep profile names operationally clear. If other people use the computer, labels such as “Company account” and “Personal account” are safer than two similar first names.
- Protect profile access with the device itself. Chrome warns that someone who can use the device may switch profiles and inspect their browsing information. Use a strong device lock and separate operating-system users when the computer is shared.
What a desktop profile keeps apart
Chrome profiles are intended to separate bookmarks, history, passwords and other Chrome settings. That means a bookmark saved in the work profile should not appear in the personal profile, and the profiles maintain their own browser history and saved passwords. The separation applies to Chrome data in those spaces; it does not make the device inaccessible to another person who can unlock it.
How to avoid accidental cross-sign-in
- Check the profile name and color before opening a new window.
- When Chrome asks whether to turn on sign-in or sync, confirm that the displayed account is the one assigned to that profile.
- Do not use a shared profile as a launch point for both identities merely because switching websites is quicker.
- When a colleague or family member needs the computer, use a separate operating-system user where available rather than handing over an unlocked browser.
Use account switching correctly on iPhone and iPad
Chrome on iPhone and iPad does not use the same desktop profile model. Use the account control in Chrome and switch before you browse.

- Open Chrome’s account control. Tap the account icon.
- Add or select the intended account. Choose the work or personal Google Account you need for the next browsing session.
- Switch before opening account-sensitive pages. Make the selection before visiting work mail, documents, calendars or personal services so the active browsing space matches the task.
- Use the managed work space when offered. For a managed work account, accept the separate work space. Google says work tabs, history and passwords stay within that work browsing space.
- Switch back when the task is finished. Return to the personal account before personal browsing, and check the account indicator if you are unsure which space is active.
On a personally managed iPhone or iPad, account switching is the normal control. On an organization-managed device, the work space provides a clearer boundary for work tabs, history and passwords. Neither option protects information from someone who can unlock the device and switch accounts.
Handle Android’s single Chrome profile
Android Chrome has one profile. You cannot create two independent Chrome profiles in the same Android user in the way you can on a desktop. If ordinary account switching is not enough, separate the Android environments instead.

Use a separate Android user
- Check whether the device supports multiple Android users. The feature is device-dependent.
- Create or select another Android user through the device’s user-management controls.
- Use Chrome within the appropriate Android user. Keep work browsing in one user and personal browsing in the other.
- Lock the device and user sessions. User separation does not replace a strong device lock; an unlocked device can still expose the active user’s information.
Use an organization-managed work profile
If your employer provides an Android work profile, use that managed space for the work account and work browsing. It gives the organization a way to manage the work environment while personal data remains in the personal side of the device. The exact controls depend on the organization’s management policies, so follow the enrollment and switching instructions supplied by your employer.
When Android account switching is sufficient
If the same person uses both accounts and the consequence of an occasional mix-up is low, switching the active Google account may be convenient. It is not equivalent to two Chrome profiles: Chrome still has one profile, and shared cookies, saved browser data or sync context can persist. Use a separate Android user or managed work profile when the distinction is important.
Review Chrome Sync before it carries data to an account
Signing in to Chrome can save bookmarks, passwords, tabs and other Chrome data to the signed-in Google Account. Review the account’s sync choices instead of assuming that only the currently visible page is involved.

- Open the sync review page. Go to https://chrome.google.com/sync while signed in to the account you want to inspect.
- Identify what is associated with that account. Check whether bookmarks, passwords, tabs or other Chrome data are being saved.
- Disable or remove data you do not want associated with that account. Apply the change to the account whose profile you are reviewing.
- Repeat for every account and profile. A work profile and a personal profile can have different sync decisions; do not assume one account’s setting controls the other.
Sync review is especially important after creating profiles, because a profile can be correctly separated locally while still uploading information to the wrong signed-in account if its sync identity was chosen incorrectly.

Google’s Web & App Activity settings include a Chrome subsetting. Google says Chrome history saved to an account may be used to personalize Google products and services. This is separate from the question of whether two local Chrome profiles are separated: a profile can keep history apart on the device, while the signed-in account can still use its own saved activity for personalization.
- Open Web & App Activity for each Google Account. Make sure you are viewing the account whose activity you want to control.
- Find the Chrome history subsetting. Review whether Chrome history is included.
- Decide account by account. Keep the setting that matches your work or personal requirements rather than copying one choice blindly to every identity.
- Recheck after changing profiles or devices. A new profile, phone or managed work space can use a different account and therefore a different activity setting.
Turning off or limiting activity storage changes what that account saves and uses for personalization; it does not turn a shared device into a private device. Device access, cookies and information shared by third-party sites remain separate concerns.
Why Incognito is not an account-separation method
Incognito can limit some browser history and other local persistence, but it does not create a second Google identity. Google says you cannot sign in to Chrome in Incognito, although you can still sign in to Google web services. That distinction matters: an Incognito window is a temporary browsing mode, not a separate profile with its own synced bookmarks, passwords and settings.
Google’s Privacy Policy also says third-party sites and apps can share information with Google even when Incognito is used. Therefore, Incognito is not a way to block all sharing with Google, and it should not be used as the boundary between a work account and a personal account.

Protect the device and the people who use it
Profile separation assumes that the person using each profile is authorized to see its data. Google warns that someone with access to the device can switch Chrome profiles and inspect browsing information. A separate profile is therefore a data-organization control, not a replacement for device security.
- Use a strong device lock. This is the first barrier against someone opening Chrome and switching profiles.
- Use separate operating-system users on a shared computer. This adds a device-level boundary above Chrome profiles.
- Do not leave a work or personal session unlocked. Lock the computer or phone before handing it to another person.
- Keep account labels unambiguous. Clear names and colors help prevent a user from saving information in the wrong profile.
- Consider managed controls for employer data. A managed work account or work profile can keep work tabs, history and passwords in the designated work space and lets the organization apply its own policies.
Common failure modes and fixes
Work bookmarks appear in the personal profile
Check which Chrome profile is open, then inspect the signed-in account and sync choice for that profile. If both accounts were used in one profile, create dedicated profiles and sign in to only the matching account in each. Review sync at https://chrome.google.com/sync and disable or remove data that should not be associated with the account.
A personal password appears while working
Confirm the profile name before saving credentials. A desktop profile keeps passwords separate only when the accounts are actually using separate profiles. On Android, remember that Chrome has one profile; use a separate Android user or managed work profile when one shared password space is unacceptable.
History is visible under the wrong Google Account
Review the active Chrome profile or mobile account, then check Web & App Activity and its Chrome subsetting for each account. Chrome history saved to an account can be used to personalize Google products and services, so account-level activity settings must be reviewed in addition to local profile settings.

Chrome profiles do not prevent an authorized device user from switching profiles. Strengthen the device lock and, on a shared computer, create separate operating-system users. On Android, use separate Android users or the managed work profile rather than relying only on Chrome account switching.

Incognito did not prevent information sharing
That is expected. Incognito does not create a second Google identity, and third-party sites and apps may still share information with Google. Use dedicated profiles or managed spaces for account separation; reserve Incognito for temporary local browsing needs.
Recommended arrangements by situation
One person with work and personal accounts on a desktop
Create two Chrome profiles, name and color them clearly, sign in to the matching account in each, and review sync and Web & App Activity separately. Use the work profile for all work browsing and the personal profile for personal services.
One person switching between accounts on an iPhone or iPad
Use Chrome’s account icon to select the account before each task. If the work account is managed, accept its separate work space so work tabs, history and passwords stay there. Protect the phone with a strong lock.
One person using Android for both identities
Because Chrome has one profile, use ordinary account switching only when a shared browser context is acceptable. For stronger separation, use a separate Android user or the organization’s managed work profile.
A family or team sharing a computer
Do not rely on Chrome profiles alone. Give each person a separate operating-system user, lock the device when unattended, and use distinct Chrome profiles inside the appropriate user when needed.
