Keep sensitive banking data out of an AI agent by making the model see only the minimum derived data required for its current task, while enforcing identity, authorization, retrieval scope, and tool permissions outside the model. Masking a number in a prompt is useful in some workflows, but it is not a security boundary. An agent can expose data through retrieved documents, tool results, memory, telemetry, or an action it is allowed to take. The dependable design is layered: minimize data before it reaches context, constrain retrieval, authorize every tool call in a backend or gateway, isolate memory and logs, treat external content as hostile, and require approval for consequential actions.

Why prompt wording is not a security boundary

A system instruction such as “never reveal account numbers” is guidance to a probabilistic model, not an access-control decision. If the agent can retrieve an entire customer profile, query unrestricted transactions, or call a payment tool, the sensitive data and the capability already exist in the execution environment. A prompt cannot reliably compensate for excessive permissions.

OWASP’s guidance describes the safer division of responsibility: the model may propose a response or a tool call, but downstream systems must treat that output as untrusted and validate it before use. The OWASP Cheat Sheet Series states, “Treat model output as untrusted at every downstream use.” See the LLM Prompt Injection Prevention Cheat Sheet and the AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet.

At each stage, decide which fields are necessary, who may access them, how long they remain available, and what must happen before data leaves the system.

Start with a task-specific data inventory

Before changing a prompt, write down the exact result the agent must produce. A request to explain a monthly spending trend may need category totals and date ranges; it normally does not need a full account number, online-banking password, security answers, or every unclassified transaction. A request to identify a disputed payment may need a transaction reference, merchant, date, amount, and dispute status, but not unrelated accounts belonging to the same customer.

Classify fields by necessity

Use a field-level inventory for every task and mark each item as required, conditionally required, or unnecessary. Include data that arrives indirectly through retrieval and tools, not only text the user typed.

Data category Typical examples Default treatment
Credentials and secrets Passwords, one-time codes, private keys, session tokens Never place in prompts, memory, system instructions, or ordinary logs. Use a protected secrets or identity service.
Direct identifiers Full account number, national identifier, full address, phone number Exclude unless the task genuinely requires it. Prefer a stable internal reference or a carefully masked display value.
Financial detail Balances, statements, transaction descriptions, payee data Return only the records, fields, date range, and aggregation needed for the stated purpose.
Derived values Monthly totals, risk bands, masked suffix, transaction count Prefer when the model can complete the task without seeing source records.
Authorization context User, tenant, account scope, purpose, session Bind it in trusted application state and enforce it in the backend; do not rely on model-supplied claims.

OWASP recommends classifying data and applying protections, while the Information Commissioner’s Office advises deciding in advance what information and systems an agent may access for a specific purpose. See the OWASP AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet and the ICO’s discussion of data protection and privacy risks in agentic AI.

Use masking, tokenization, or aggregation conditionally

There is no universal masking recipe. A model that must distinguish two accounts can use an internal reference such as acct_ref_4821; a user-facing explanation might need only the last four digits; a fraud model might need a numeric feature rather than either identifier. Keep the mapping from an internal reference to the real account outside model context and protect it with normal access controls. Ensure that masked values cannot be joined with other fields to reconstruct the original identity.

Remove fields before prompt construction

Do not retrieve a full object and ask the model to ignore most of it. Select columns at the query or service boundary, then serialize only the approved fields. Redaction after a large result has reached the model is too late: it may already be present in a trace, cache, token stream, or provider request.

Constrain retrieval by user, task, tenant, and purpose

Retrieval is often the point where a well-intentioned prompt becomes exposed to far more data than the user needs. A connector that can search every account or every document is excessive even if the agent normally asks sensible questions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply scope before the search runs

Build authorization filters from trusted session and application state, not from a natural-language request or a model-generated filter. A retrieval request should carry the authenticated subject, tenant, permitted account set, purpose, and time or record limits. The search service must reject missing or conflicting scope.

  • Filter by the current user or an explicitly delegated service identity.
  • Filter by tenant or legal entity before ranking or vector search.
  • Allow only the accounts and products granted to this task.
  • Select an allowlist of fields and cap result count, date range, and document size.
  • Separate read-only search from operations that can change data.

Do not let retrieval silently expand

Watch for “helpful” fallback behavior: if no authorized record is found, the agent should not search all customers, use a privileged service account, or ask another tool for a broader export. Deny by default and return a controlled explanation. OWASP’s least model privilege guidance recommends limiting the model’s access to the minimum data and capabilities needed for its role.

Return a safe projection

Have the data service return a purpose-built projection rather than a raw database row. For example, a spending-summary endpoint could return {"period":"2026-09","category":"utilities","total":184.20,"currency":"USD"} and omit account identifiers, merchant addresses, and free-text notes. The projection is part of the service contract and should be reviewed like any other API response.

Enforce authorization outside the model

Every model-generated tool call is a request for a backend decision, not proof that the user is entitled to perform the operation. Put authorization at the API gateway, policy engine, or tool-execution service. The executor should resolve the caller’s identity and session itself, then check resource, operation, purpose, and risk before touching banking systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Validate tool arguments

Use strict schemas and reject unknown fields, ambiguous account references, malformed amounts, invalid currencies, and out-of-range dates. Resolve a user-visible account label to an internal identifier only after checking that the caller can access it. Never accept an account ID, role, tenant, or approval flag supplied solely by the model.

Bind each call to the right session

Carry a signed or server-side session context through the orchestration layer. Check that the tool call’s subject and tenant match that context, and prevent one conversation from replaying a token or reference created for another. Expire authorizations and require fresh authentication where the underlying banking operation requires it.

Separate capabilities

Create narrow tools such as get_transaction_summary or prepare_transfer instead of a generic SQL tool or unrestricted banking API. A preparation tool can calculate and display a proposed transfer without sending it. A separate execution tool can require a human confirmation or a policy approval token that the model cannot mint.

The OWASP LLM06:2025 Excessive Agency risk description explains why unnecessary functions, excessive permissions, and missing validation make an agent more dangerous. The OWASP AI Security Overview also treats authorization and least privilege as controls outside the model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Design for indirect prompt injection

Indirect prompt injection occurs when instructions arrive inside content the agent is asked to read: an email, web page, statement attachment, support ticket, or tool result. The text may tell the agent to reveal a secret, ignore policy, or call an exfiltration endpoint. Because the content can look authoritative after retrieval, labels such as “untrusted” help humans but do not by themselves enforce safety.

Keep data and instructions separate

Represent retrieved material as structured data with an origin, trust level, and record identifier. Tell the model that the content is evidence to summarize, not a new policy. More importantly, make the executor ignore instructions embedded in data fields and require a separately generated, validated action request.

Block outbound exfiltration paths

A dangerous combination exists when attacker-controlled content reaches the model, the model can read sensitive information, and it has a way to send data out. Remove unnecessary outbound tools, restrict destinations, limit payload fields, and inspect requests at the network or API boundary. A model should not be able to email, post to an arbitrary URL, or create a public document merely because a retrieved page requested it.

Treat tool results as untrusted too

A compromised or misconfigured connector can return malicious text along with legitimate records. Apply the same parsing, size limits, and validation to tool output that you apply to user input. Do not concatenate raw results into a system message or executable command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect memory, context, and logs

Sensitive data can survive long after the original prompt. Conversation memory, retrieval indexes, caches, debugging traces, analytics events, and provider requests should be treated as data stores with their own access controls and retention rules.

Isolate users and sessions

Partition memory by tenant, user, and conversation. Check those boundaries on every read and write, including semantic search. A new session must not retrieve another user’s previous account details because a shared vector index found them semantically similar.

Set retention and deletion behavior

Define how long each memory type is needed, who can delete it, and how deletion propagates to replicas, indexes, backups, and exports. Avoid retaining raw statements when an aggregate or a short-lived reference supports the task. Document exceptions required for security or legal purposes rather than retaining everything by default.

Redact telemetry

Disable payload logging for prompts and tool responses where possible. Otherwise, redact account numbers, credentials, personal identifiers, and free-text transaction details before they reach logs. Protect traces with the same role-based access, encryption, monitoring, and retention discipline as production banking data. Never put secrets in a system prompt as a convenient substitute for a protected secret store.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Require approval for high-impact actions

Reading a permitted summary and changing a payee are different risk classes. Transfers, payee changes, account closure, disclosure to a third party, and other irreversible or high-value operations should pass through a separately enforced policy and, where appropriate, a person.

  1. The agent prepares a proposed action using the minimum data and a narrow tool.
  2. The backend rechecks identity, entitlement, destination, amount, limits, fraud signals, and freshness.
  3. The user or authorized reviewer sees the material details through a trusted interface, not only a model-generated sentence.
  4. The approval is bound to the exact operation, recipient, amount, and expiry time.
  5. The executor performs the action once, records the decision, and returns a verifiable result.

The precise approval threshold depends on the deployment, jurisdiction, product, and risk appetite; it cannot be inferred from a generic prompt. Do not let the model manufacture an approval token or downgrade a high-impact action to a harmless-sounding description.

A practical reference architecture

A safer flow keeps the model in a constrained planning and explanation role:

  1. Authenticate: establish the user, tenant, session, and delegated permissions in trusted application code.
  2. Classify the task: select an approved workflow and its field and tool allowlists.
  3. Retrieve a projection: query an authorization-aware service that returns only approved records and fields.
  4. Assemble context: include the minimum derived values, clearly mark external content as data, and exclude secrets.
  5. Generate a proposal: allow the model to summarize or request a narrow tool operation using a strict schema.
  6. Validate: check arguments, scope, policy, rate limits, and data-loss rules outside the model.
  7. Approve or deny: route consequential operations to a trusted confirmation or review step.
  8. Execute and audit: perform the action with a least-privileged service identity and log a redacted decision record.

This architecture means a prompt mistake cannot automatically grant access to another account or turn a retrieved instruction into a payment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare designs using security questions, not vendor rankings

There is no general product benchmark or universal compliant configuration for banking agents. Evaluate any proposed architecture with the following questions:

Evaluation axis Questions to answer Evidence to request
Model-visible data Which fields and records can enter prompts, retrieved context, and tool results? Field allowlists, sample payloads, redaction rules, and data-flow diagrams
Scope Is access limited by user, task, tenant, purpose, account, and time? Authorization policies and negative tests showing denied access
Execution control Are model calls validated and authorized outside the model? Gateway or executor design, schemas, replay protection, and audit events
Untrusted content Can documents or tool results introduce instructions or outbound destinations? Isolation design, destination allowlists, injection tests, and egress controls
Memory and logs How are isolation, retention, deletion, encryption, and redaction implemented? Storage configuration, retention schedules, access logs, and deletion tests
High-impact actions What requires confirmation, dual control, or a separate policy decision? Approval workflow, expiry behavior, and tamper-evident audit trail

Test the whole data path with synthetic banking data

Use harmless synthetic accounts, statements, and transactions while testing. Instrument the agent and tools so you can see whether a test value entered a prompt, retrieval result, memory record, trace, outbound request, or final response.

Test direct and indirect attacks

  • Ask directly for another user’s account details and verify that retrieval and tools deny the request.
  • Place an instruction to disclose secrets inside a synthetic statement, email, or web page and verify that it is treated as data.
  • Attempt to alter tenant, account, amount, destination, or approval fields in a model-generated tool call.
  • Replay a tool request from one session in another and verify that binding and expiry stop it.
  • Provide oversized, malformed, or conflicting tool results and confirm safe failure.
  • Check that traces, analytics, error messages, and memory contain no unredacted test secrets.

Repeat these tests after changing prompts, tool schemas, retrieval indexes, memory behavior, model providers, network routes, or policy configuration. OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet emphasizes layered controls, monitoring, and testing rather than reliance on a single prompt defense.

Monitor for operational drift

Alert on unusual field access, retrieval expansion, repeated authorization failures, new outbound destinations, unusually large tool responses, and actions outside normal user or task patterns. Review both successful and denied calls. Preserve enough redacted context to reconstruct a decision without creating a second sensitive-data repository.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do when sensitive data has already entered a prompt

  1. Stop or disable the affected workflow if exposure is ongoing, especially any outbound or write capability.
  2. Identify where the data went: prompt and response stores, provider requests, traces, caches, memory, indexes, backups, and exports.
  3. Revoke or rotate credentials and tokens if any secret was included; do not assume deletion of a conversation invalidates a credential.
  4. Apply retention and deletion procedures to every copy, subject to applicable legal and incident-response requirements.
  5. Review access logs and outbound traffic for evidence of retrieval or disclosure.
  6. Fix the data projection, authorization, logging, and tool policy that allowed the exposure, then retest with synthetic data before re-enabling the workflow.
  7. Escalate to the organization’s privacy, security, legal, and incident-response teams according to its obligations and contracts.

Jurisdiction, provider, and contract checks

General engineering controls do not establish that a particular deployment meets a bank’s regulatory duties or a jurisdiction’s privacy requirements. Verify provider retention, training-use, region, subprocessors, encryption, deletion, breach-notification, and audit terms against the actual contract and configuration. Confirm that every connected system has a compatible purpose, access model, and retention policy. The ICO’s agentic-AI privacy guidance is a useful risk framing, but it does not replace advice for a specific jurisdiction or institution.

Implementation checklist

  • Define the minimum fields for every banking task.
  • Remove unnecessary fields before prompt or retrieval construction.
  • Keep identifier mappings and credentials outside model context.
  • Scope retrieval by authenticated user, tenant, task, purpose, account, and time.
  • Use narrow, read-only or preparation tools where possible.
  • Authorize and validate every tool call in a backend or gateway.
  • Reject model-supplied identity, tenant, role, and approval claims.
  • Mark external content as untrusted and prevent it from changing policy.
  • Restrict outbound destinations and payload fields.
  • Isolate memory and indexes across users and sessions.
  • Set retention and deletion rules for prompts, context, traces, and caches.
  • Redact sensitive fields from logs and debugging telemetry.
  • Require trusted confirmation or separate policy approval for consequential actions.
  • Test direct injection, indirect injection, cross-tenant access, replay, and exfiltration with synthetic data.
  • Monitor denied access, unusual retrieval, tool use, and outbound activity.

The Bottom Line

To keep sensitive banking data out of AI agent prompts, minimize it before retrieval, expose only task-specific projections, enforce least privilege and authorization outside the model, isolate memory and logs, and gate every consequential action. Prompt instructions are one layer of defense; the real boundary is the system that decides what the agent can retrieve and do.
