Keep credentials and sensitive data outside the assistant’s readable context, then control which repositories, files, tools and runners it can use. Put API keys, passwords, private keys, production credentials and sensitive customer data in a managed secret store—not source files, chat prompts, terminals, environment variables or agent workspaces. Restrict the assistant to approved repositories and tools, block production access, require human review and scanning, and verify the provider’s current retention, training, residency and compliance terms. For highly sensitive code, run a model locally or in an isolated environment after documenting the security decision.
Why an AI coding assistant can see more than the file you are editing
An assistant may receive the active editor buffer, nearby files, the whole workspace, repository history, terminal output and diagnostic messages. Depending on the product and configuration, it may also invoke shell commands, read environment variables, call MCP servers or other extensions, and run on a cloud-hosted agent runner. A secret does not have to be committed to Git to be exposed: an assistant can encounter it in an untracked file, a copied terminal command, a build log or a process environment.
Cloud agents add another boundary. The files and commands needed to complete a task can be uploaded to an inference service, and the resulting prompts, completions or telemetry may be retained under the provider’s terms. A developer’s local model removes the provider-upload step, but it does not prevent disclosure through endpoint compromise, logs, extensions, backups or an overly broad workspace.
Use a threat model with three separate questions:
- Exposure: Can the assistant read the value or proprietary code at all?
- Retention and training: If it can, is the interaction stored, reviewed or used to improve a model?
- Downstream action: Can the assistant write, commit, publish, deploy or call a production system?
Least privilege and separation should answer all three questions before an assistant is enabled for a repository.

Understand plan-specific data terms before sending proprietary code
“Private repository” describes repository access, not necessarily how prompts and suggestions are handled. Policies differ by plan, access method and date. Read the provider’s current terms and administrator controls for the exact product you use.
| Access or plan | Training statement | Retention detail stated by GitHub’s current Copilot policy | Security implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual Copilot subscribers | GitHub says prompts, suggestions and generated code snippets may be used to train models; individual subscribers can opt out. | Terms and controls can change; confirm the current setting on each account. | Do not assume a private repository prevents training use. Apply the opt-out and keep secrets out of context regardless. |
| Free, Pro and Pro+ interaction data | A GitHub announcement dated March 25, 2026 says interaction data will be used for training beginning April 24, 2026 unless the user opts out. | Effective date is April 24, 2026; this is the current policy date in the announcement. | As of the effective date, verify the opt-out for every individual account and document it. |
| Business and Enterprise | The April 24, 2026 update excludes Business and Enterprise users. These plans still have their own contractual and administrative controls. | For non-IDE Business/Enterprise access, GitHub’s current policy states a default 28-day retention period for prompts and suggestions. User-engagement data has a default two-year retention period. | Enterprise terms reduce risk but do not make a secret safe to paste into a prompt. Confirm residency, subprocessors, retention overrides and audit access with your administrator. |
Opting out of training is not the same as preventing transient processing, administrative access, security logging or retention required by a contract. Treat provider policy as a control to verify, not as a substitute for data minimization.
Classify repositories and decide what the assistant may handle
Set a written boundary before enabling an assistant. A practical classification looks like this:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Repository or data class | Typical contents | Default assistant decision | Minimum conditions if access is approved |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public or disposable | Open-source examples, toy projects and synthetic data | Allow a standard assistant, subject to code review. | No credentials, customer records or production connectivity. |
| Internal proprietary | Unreleased features, private algorithms and internal documentation | Use an organization-managed plan with repository and tool restrictions. | Training and retention terms reviewed; audit logs and human review enabled. |
| Confidential | Signing logic, security controls, source for sensitive products and nonpublic customer information | Prefer a tightly governed enterprise deployment or a local model. | Sensitive-content exclusion, isolated runners, network controls and mandatory scanning. |
| Regulated or high-impact | Production credentials, payment or health records, regulated keys and export-controlled code | Keep outside ordinary assistant workflows; consider an air-gapped deployment. | Documented information-assurance approval, strict access logging and no direct production access. |
When one repository mixes classes, split it. A separate service or package for sensitive logic is easier to exclude than a folder hidden inside a large workspace.
Inventory every path into the assistant’s context
Make the inventory concrete rather than relying on a product label such as “privacy mode.” For each assistant, record whether it can access:

- Open files, unsaved buffers, editor tabs and language-server diagnostics.
- Every folder in the workspace, nested repositories and generated build directories.
- Git history, branches, stashes, pull-request diffs and ignored files.
- Terminal commands, standard output, error output, shell history and process listings.
- Environment variables, local configuration files, credential helpers and cloud CLI profiles.
- MCP servers, extensions, issue trackers, documentation indexes and other connected services.
- Cloud-agent runners, uploaded artifacts, caches, logs and network destinations.
Test the inventory with a harmless marker such as CONTEXT_TEST_VALUE, not a live credential. Confirm which surfaces can retrieve it, where logs appear and how access is revoked.
Keep secrets outside the workspace and development environment
GitHub’s cloud-agent guidance says to keep data and tokens that the agent should not access in GitHub Actions variables or secrets. UK government guidance likewise says that secrets in a workspace may be uploaded to an assistant’s inference layer and that sensitive production data or secrets should never be handled in development environments.
Recommended Free Tools
Use a managed secret store
Store deployment tokens, database passwords, signing keys and service credentials in the CI/CD platform’s encrypted secret store or an approved enterprise vault. Inject a narrowly scoped value only into the job that needs it, for the shortest practical lifetime. Prefer short-lived, audience-restricted tokens over reusable personal access tokens.
Do not print injected values. Disable shell tracing around secret use, redact command output and ensure test failures cannot echo request headers or connection strings. Keep production and nonproduction credentials in separate stores with separate identities.
Do not treat local environment variables as invisible
An environment variable is hidden from source control, but an assistant that can execute env, inspect a process, run a test or read a diagnostic may still obtain it. Use a dedicated process or task with a minimal environment, and deny terminal access when the assistant does not need it.

Remove and rotate anything already exposed
- Revoke or rotate the credential immediately in its issuing system.
- Search commits, branches, stashes, build artifacts, issue comments and logs for copies.
- Remove the value from reachable history using the repository’s approved history-rewrite procedure.
- Review assistant, CI and cloud-provider logs for retrieval or use.
- Record the incident and update the prevention rule that failed.
Adding a pattern to .gitignore prevents some future commits; it does not remove a value from an existing commit, terminal transcript or assistant context.
Restrict repositories, files, tools and actions
Use organization policies and repository boundaries
Enable enterprise policies that limit which organizations, repositories, models and extensions may be used. Turn on sensitive-content exclusion where available, and exclude directories containing credentials, customer exports, signing material and security incident data. Exclusions should be explicit and tested: a rule that covers secrets/ but not config/prod.yml is not a complete boundary.
Apply repository rulesets and protected branches. Require CODEOWNERS approval for authentication, authorization, cryptography, infrastructure and deployment files. Prevent force-pushes and direct merges to protected branches, and require status checks before a change can land.
Limit tool permissions
Start with read-only access to one approved repository. Add file-write, terminal, network, issue-tracker or pull-request permissions only when a task requires them. Deny destructive commands, arbitrary outbound network access and production API endpoints. A coding assistant should not share the identity used by a deployment system.
Use isolated and ephemeral runners
Run cloud-agent jobs on fresh runners with no persistent home directory, cached credentials or unrelated repositories. Destroy the runner and its workspace after the task. Restrict egress to approved package registries and test services, and retain only the logs required for audit or troubleshooting.

Separate development from production
The safest production credential for an assistant is one it cannot reach. Use synthetic data, local emulators and nonproduction services for development. Put a firewall or service-mesh policy between assistant runners and production networks. Require a separate, human-controlled promotion step for every deployment.
- Use different identities, keys and databases for development, staging and production.
- Grant assistants no production write permission and, where practical, no production read permission.
- Require two-person approval for infrastructure, access-control and database-schema changes.
- Make deployment credentials short-lived and issue them only after review.
- Alert on attempts by an assistant runner to reach a production hostname or secret endpoint.
This separation also limits damage from generated code that contains an insecure command, dependency or data-handling path.
Review generated code as untrusted input
Generated code is a suggestion, not a security decision. GitHub warns that public-code-derived suggestions can contain hardcoded credentials, SQL injection and path-injection patterns. UK guidance recommends adequate test coverage, vulnerability scanning and checking dependency versions against trusted sources.
Use a mandatory review path
- Inspect the complete diff, including generated files and dependency-lock changes.
- Identify every input boundary: HTTP parameters, files, URLs, shell commands, database queries and serialized data.
- Confirm authentication, authorization, validation, output encoding, error handling and logging behavior.
- Run unit, integration and negative tests that exercise malformed input and failure paths.
- Run static analysis, secret scanning, software-composition analysis and infrastructure-as-code checks.
- Verify each new dependency, version, checksum and license against a trusted registry or internal mirror.
- Obtain CODEOWNERS and security approval before merging sensitive components.
Never accept a generated workaround that disables certificate validation, weakens access checks, embeds a token or suppresses a scanner merely to make a test pass.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use secret scanning as a backstop, not permission to expose secrets
GitHub Secret Protection’s Copilot secret scanning uses context to detect generic passwords. GitHub has reported that early models struggled with unusual file types and structures, so detection is incomplete. Scanners can miss encoded, transformed, newly issued or organization-specific credentials, and they cannot undo a prompt that already contained a live secret.

Enable pre-commit and pre-receive scanning, continuous repository scanning, CI checks and provider-side revocation alerts. Add organization-specific patterns for internal token formats, but test them to avoid overwhelming developers with false positives. Treat every finding as a potential compromise until the issuer confirms otherwise.
Choose between managed cloud, enterprise and local execution
| Deployment choice | Strengths | Remaining risks | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual cloud assistant | Fast setup and broad IDE support. | Individual data may be used for training unless opted out; context, retention and connected tools may be difficult for an organization to govern. | Public or low-risk code with no secrets and no production access. |
| Business or Enterprise cloud deployment | Administrative policy, repository controls, audit capability and contractual terms; the April 24, 2026 training update excludes these users. | Provider still processes the code; retention, residency, subprocessors and model routing require review. | Proprietary code when an organization can approve the terms and enforce controls. |
| Local model | Prompts and source can remain on controlled hardware; useful for restricted networks. | Endpoint compromise, model and package supply-chain risk, local logs, backups, weaker model quality and missing governance integrations. | Teams able to operate, patch, monitor and evaluate the full stack. |
| Air-gapped or isolated local deployment | Strongest network separation and no routine provider upload. | Model updates, dependency transfer, hardware, evaluation and incident response are harder; isolation must be verified rather than assumed. | Highly sensitive or regulated repositories requiring documented information assurance. |
Local execution is not automatically safe. Restrict who can copy model files, disable diagnostic uploads, encrypt local storage, control backups, review extensions and log administrative access. Evaluate output quality and security with representative—but sanitized—code before approving the system for production use.
Audit, monitor and test the controls
Record which assistant, model, account, repository, runner and tools were used for each task. Review administrative changes, policy exceptions, repository access, unusual export activity and network requests. Keep audit logs long enough to support incident investigation while honoring the retention limits approved for your organization.

- Place a harmless marker in each excluded location and verify it is not returned to the assistant.
- Attempt a denied terminal command and confirm the event is logged.
- Verify a fresh runner has no credentials or files from a prior job.
- Check that a protected-branch change cannot merge without required tests and owners.
- Rotate a test token and confirm old credentials fail everywhere.
- Review provider policy changes, including training, retention, residency and subprocessors.
Document exceptions with an owner, expiration date, affected data class and compensating controls. An exception that never expires becomes the default path around security.
A practical rollout sequence
- Inventory: List assistants, repositories, extensions, MCP servers, runners, credentials and network destinations.
- Classify: Mark repositories and data as public, internal, confidential or regulated.
- Clean: Remove secrets from source, history, local files and logs; rotate exposed credentials.
- Constrain: Apply enterprise policies, sensitive-content exclusions, repository rulesets, CODEOWNERS and least-privilege tool scopes.
- Isolate: Use synthetic data, separate identities and ephemeral runners; block production access.
- Verify: Enable tests, code scanning, dependency verification and secret scanning as required merge checks.
- Approve: Obtain security and legal review of current provider terms, retention, residency and subprocessors.
- Operate: Audit use, test exclusions, rotate credentials and reassess the deployment when the product or policy changes.
The result is not a promise that an assistant can never make a mistake. It is a system in which the assistant has less sensitive information, fewer ways to act and a short path to detection and recovery when a control fails.
