The reliable way to keep sand hoppers out is to confirm what you are seeing, remove damp conditions beside the house, and close every practical entry route. Keep exterior doors shut during active movement, fit a compatible door sweep where a gap exists, maintain screens and seals, and ask a local extension service or qualified pest professional to identify specimens when activity continues or bites are reported. Do not assume that every jumping “sand flea” is a beach hopper or that an itchy mark proves a bite.
What people call a “sand hopper”
In coastal usage, sand hopper most often means a beach-hopper amphipod: a small crustacean related to shrimp, not an insect. Amphipods are segmented, have many legs, long antennae and, in the groups described by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, forked appendages at the rear. They may move sideways or jump when disturbed.
The common names are not precise. “Sand flea” can refer to unrelated organisms in different regions, and a small jumping animal indoors may be another species entirely. That matters because habitat, control options and biting potential differ. Treat the identification as the first step rather than choosing a pesticide from a nickname.

Beach hoppers normally live in damp sand and fresh beach wrack, where they participate in the coastal food web. Finding one on a floor does not by itself show that the house has become their habitat. It may simply have followed a moisture gradient or been carried in on a shoe, mat or item stored near a doorway. The pattern of sightings—where they appear, when they appear and what the weather was doing—is more useful than the common name alone.

Why are sand hoppers coming inside?
Moisture is the central clue. Amphipods breathe with gills and need ready access to water or high humidity. In an Ask Extension response dated April 29, 2026, extension entomologist David Shetlar explained that terrestrial amphipods require water or high moisture for that reason. Beach hoppers normally use damp sand and fresh beach wrack. Around a house, temporary puddles, saturated soil or wet organic material can provide a nearby refuge.
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension describes populations moving after temporary habitats dry and entering nearby structures while seeking water. A rainstorm, irrigation event, falling tide, or a change from damp to dry conditions can therefore produce a short-lived wave at doors and walls. This does not prove that the building is infested or that the animals are breeding inside.
Inspect the property in two directions at once:
- Conditions: puddles, blocked drains, downspout discharge, leaking outdoor taps, overwatered beds and ground that stays wet beside the foundation.
- Routes: a visible gap under an exterior door, torn screens, loose window seals, open vents and cracks where pipes or cables pass through the wall.
Drainage and exclusion solve different parts of the problem. Drying the perimeter reduces a condition that can support movement or development; sealing a gap stops access. Neither measure substitutes for identifying the animal.

Look for a timing pattern before assuming a permanent problem. Sightings that peak shortly after rain, irrigation or a drying beach may represent migration. Animals repeatedly appearing in the same room despite dry weather suggest that an opening remains available, while animals found throughout the structure justify a broader inspection. Keep notes rather than relying on memory: date, weather, location, number seen and any change made that day.
Step 1: Confirm what is entering
Look for amphipod clues, without over-identifying
A likely beach hopper is small, segmented and shrimp-like, with numerous legs. It may spring away when touched or move with a side-swimming motion. These are clues, not a universal field test: regional species vary and other small arthropods can jump.
Do not diagnose a “sand-flea infestation” from an itchy spot alone. The Ask Extension expert specifically cautioned that regional identification information can be unreliable, while commercial pest-identification guidance also emphasizes that the term “sand flea” is ambiguous. A bite claim is therefore a reason to obtain an identification, not evidence that the animal on the floor caused the mark.
Collect evidence safely
- Place a clear cup or small container over one specimen, slide stiff paper underneath, and close the container. Avoid crushing it or handling it directly.
- If capture is impractical, take a sharply focused close-up photograph beside a ruler or another object that shows scale. Photograph the back and side if possible.
- Record where and when it appeared, recent rain or irrigation, whether the floor was damp, and whether animals were concentrated at one door or window.
- Send the specimen or photographs to your local cooperative extension service or a qualified pest professional when the identity is uncertain, activity persists, or occupants report bites.
Identification determines whether amphipod guidance applies. It also prevents an unnecessary treatment aimed at the wrong organism. If you send a specimen, include the collection location and date; a coastal expert may need that context because common names and species distributions vary by region.

Step 2: Reduce damp conditions beside the house
Find temporary water
Walk the perimeter after rain and again after irrigation. Look beneath outdoor faucets, at the bottom of downspouts, beside air-conditioning condensate drains and in low spots where water collects. A shallow depression that dries in ordinary weather can still support a temporary population after a storm.
Texas A&M’s prevention advice is to improve drainage near structures so temporary bodies of water do not form during rainy periods. Correct the source where practical: redirect a downspout, clear a blocked surface drain, repair a leaking fitting or adjust irrigation so the foundation edge is not repeatedly soaked. Keep the immediate landscape on the drier side when terrestrial amphipods are present, as recommended in the Ask Extension response.
Check roof-gutter outlets and splash areas as well as the soil itself. Water that appears to leave a gutter can still pool where the discharge lands. Likewise, a hose left connected to a leaking tap or a sprinkler aimed at a wall can maintain a damp strip that is easy to miss during a quick inspection. The goal is not to make a coastal property unnaturally dry; it is to prevent avoidable, persistent wet spots immediately beside the structure.
Do not alter the beach as a blanket remedy
Fresh wrack and damp sand are natural coastal habitat and food sources for beach organisms. The available guidance supports changes on the property and at the building perimeter, not wholesale removal of beach wrack. Beach access, wildlife and local rules can also limit what a homeowner may disturb. Concentrate on drainage, watering and building maintenance within your control.
Check whether the event is temporary
Note the timing. A cluster that appears after a dry-out period and disappears as animals desiccate may be a migration event rather than continuing indoor activity. Repeated appearances after every rain or irrigation cycle point more strongly to a recurring moisture condition that needs correction.
Allow corrected drainage time to show a pattern. Reinspect after the next wet event instead of judging success immediately after a sunny afternoon. If the perimeter is dry but specimens still collect at one threshold, shift attention from habitat to exclusion. If both moisture and entry points are present, address both; they are complementary measures, not competing choices.
Step 3: Close routes into the beach house
Start at exterior doors
Close exterior doors during active movement. At the bottom of each door, look for daylight or a gap that allows a sheet of paper to slide through. Measure the door and the gap before buying hardware. An exterior door sweep that matches the door width and mounting style is a practical fix for a confirmed under-door opening; general pest-exclusion guidance from UGA Cooperative Extension supports door sweeps for such gaps.

Install the sweep so its flexible edge contacts the threshold without preventing the door from latching. Recheck after the door settles or the threshold is adjusted. A sweep addresses one access point; it does not remove damp habitat or seal gaps elsewhere.
Do not permanently block a required drainage or ventilation opening. Where a vent must remain open, use an intact screen or other solution appropriate to that opening, and follow building and fire-safety requirements. Exclusion work should close unintended gaps while preserving the house’s necessary airflow and safe operation.
Inspect windows, screens and vents
- Repair torn window screens and make sure the frame seats tightly.
- Replace flattened or missing weather seals around operable windows and doors.
- Check screened vents, crawl-space openings and utility penetrations for open edges.
- Seal cracks around pipes, cables and conduit with a material appropriate for the surface and exposure.
UGA’s recommendations are general structural exclusion measures, not a sand-hopper-specific product trial. They are useful because they remove routes any small ground-dwelling animal could use.
Use a simple night-time check
After dark, have one person stand outside with a flashlight while another checks the interior side of doors and windows. Light showing through a seal, moving animals along a threshold or a concentrated line at one opening identifies where to prioritize work. Avoid leaving doors open to “watch” the migration; that increases access while you are diagnosing it.
Step 4: Manage an active migration
- Keep exterior doors closed except for necessary passage.
- Move shoes, mats and stored items away from thresholds so specimens are visible and can be collected for identification.
- Vacuum or sweep animals from interior floors and dispose of the contents outside in a sealed bag. This removes the immediate nuisance without spreading a spray indoors.
- Inspect the nearest exterior area for puddles, saturated soil and a gap under the door or around a screen.
- Make the temporary exclusion repair, then monitor the same location after the next rain or irrigation cycle.
Amphipods that have left a wet environment may die as they dry. A natural decline does not demonstrate that a chemical treatment worked, so record what changed before drawing that conclusion.

Should you spray for sand hoppers?
Do not treat a common name as a pesticide diagnosis. Texas A&M reports that pesticide registration for controlling amphipods after they have left aquatic breeding sites is limited. The same source mentions reports of responses to some contact insecticides but notes that drying conditions can explain apparent die-offs attributed to treatment. That is not evidence of a universally effective, labeled home treatment.

Spraying before identification can expose occupants, pets and non-target coastal organisms while leaving the moisture and entry problem intact. If a professional recommends a product, ask which species was identified, where the product is legally labeled for use, what surfaces may be treated, and what re-entry and environmental precautions apply. Follow the product label and local regulations; do not apply an aquatic or outdoor chemical inside a house unless the label specifically permits that use.
For a brief migration with no continuing indoor activity, drainage, closed doors and sealing are the lower-risk first response. Persistent activity, an unknown specimen or alleged bites warrants local advice rather than an improvised spray program.

Choose the next measure by the evidence
| What you observe | First measure | What it addresses | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daylight or a paper-sized gap under an exterior door | Fit a compatible exterior door sweep and keep the door shut during movement | Direct access through the threshold | It does not remove damp habitat elsewhere |
| Standing water or persistently wet soil beside the building | Improve drainage, redirect discharge and correct overwatering | A moisture condition that can support amphipod activity | It does not identify the animal or seal the structure |
| Torn screen, loose window seal or open vent | Repair the screen or seal the opening | Specific structural entry routes | It is general exclusion advice, not a species-specific trial |
| A short wave after rain that then stops | Close routes, remove specimens and monitor after the next wet event | Immediate nuisance and evidence gathering | It does not prove an indoor breeding population |
| Activity continues, the animal is unidentified, or bites are reported | Preserve a specimen or clear photograph and contact local extension or a qualified pest professional | Species confirmation and region-specific risk assessment | An itchy mark alone does not prove a sand-hopper bite |
These options are not interchangeable. A sweep is the logical first purchase only when an under-door gap is documented. Drainage is the priority when water remains beside the foundation. Identification comes first when the animal does not clearly match an amphipod or when someone reports bites. The most durable response often combines one property correction with one building correction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do sand hoppers bite?
There is no single answer that applies to every animal called a sand flea. Species and regional usage vary, and the available extension guidance does not establish a universal bite risk for beach-hopper amphipods. A crawling or jumping animal can be present at the same time as an irritation caused by something else.
If someone reports bites, photograph the animal and preserve a specimen rather than relying on the skin reaction to identify it. Wash the area, avoid scratching and seek medical advice for severe pain, spreading redness, breathing difficulty or other concerning symptoms. A local extension service or qualified pest professional can address the animal-identification question; a clinician should address a persistent or severe skin reaction.
Do not use the location of a skin mark to infer where the animal entered. Ask whether the person was outdoors, whether bedding or clothing was shared, and whether any specimen was actually seen. Those details help separate a building-exclusion problem from an unrelated irritation without claiming a diagnosis.

When to call for local help
Escalate when the animals continue after drainage and exclusion work, appear throughout the building rather than at one opening, or cannot be identified from a specimen or photograph. Local experts can account for the coast, climate and species actually present in your area. Tell them the date, weather, moisture conditions, entry locations and any steps already taken.
Ask for an inspection focused on identification and entry conditions. A professional should be able to explain whether a pesticide is legally labeled for the identified organism and location, what nonchemical measures are recommended, and how to protect occupants and coastal environments. Be cautious of anyone promising a universal “sand flea” treatment without examining the specimen or the building.
Extension services are useful even when no pesticide is appropriate: they can clarify whether the specimen is an amphipod, explain local terminology and point out regional moisture patterns. A pest professional is most helpful when the entry route is difficult to find or the nuisance persists after practical repairs. Neither should be expected to identify an animal from an itchy mark alone.

- Confirm the animal with a containerized specimen or a clear close-up image.
- Record rain, irrigation and the exact room or opening where it appears.
- Check for puddles, blocked drainage, leaking fixtures and wet soil beside the structure.
- Keep the perimeter from remaining persistently wet where practical.
- Keep exterior doors shut during active movement.
- Install an exterior door sweep only where a measured under-door gap exists.
- Repair screens, weather seals, vents and utility penetrations.
- Vacuum or sweep indoor specimens and retain one for identification if needed.
- Do not spray solely because an animal was called a “sand flea.”
- Contact local extension or a qualified pest professional for persistent activity or bite concerns.
The approach works because it separates four decisions that are often confused: identify the animal, reduce moisture that supports movement, block the route into the house, and obtain regional help when the evidence does not fit a straightforward migration.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I keep sand hoppers out of my beach house?
Confirm the animal, correct puddles or persistently wet soil near the structure, keep exterior doors closed during movement, and seal gaps with a compatible door sweep, intact screens and weather seals. If activity continues, preserve a specimen or clear photograph for local identification.
Why are sand hoppers coming inside?
Amphipods need water or high moisture because they breathe with gills. Temporary wet habitat can dry, prompting movement toward nearby structures. A storm, irrigation or a damp refuge beside the house can produce a short-lived wave without proving indoor breeding.
Should I spray for sand hoppers?
Not before identification. Registration for controlling amphipods away from aquatic breeding sites is limited, and an apparent die-off may simply reflect drying. Use drainage and exclusion first, and ask a local professional about any legally labeled treatment.
Recommended Free Tools
Do sand hoppers bite?
The term “sand flea” covers different organisms, and bite risk varies by species and region. An itchy mark does not prove that an amphipod caused it. Photograph or preserve the animal and seek medical care for severe or persistent symptoms.
What should I buy first?
Buy an exterior door sweep only if you have measured a real gap under an exterior door. A sweep addresses that route; it does not correct standing water or other openings. If no gap is present, prioritize drainage, screens, seals or expert identification instead.
The Bottom Line
Keep sand hoppers out by working in order: identify the specimen, dry avoidable wet spots near the house, close doors during migration, and seal measured gaps with screens, weather seals or a compatible exterior door sweep. Skip improvised spraying, and contact local extension or a qualified pest professional when activity persists or bites are reported.
