In Planet Zoo 2, keeping released animals healthy starts before the release button: care for each species in the zoo, satisfy the game’s release gate, build a suitable Wildlife Reserve, and then observe and improve that reserve as a living ecosystem. Frontier has confirmed that sequence at a feature level, but the public information available on October 13, 2026 does not publish the exact eligibility values, welfare thresholds, interface steps, or reserve-health calculations.
This is therefore a pre-release guide to the decisions Frontier has announced, not a report of tested gameplay. The Steam listing still showed the game as available for pre-purchase at the time of the cited information, so treat every point about exact menus, bars, unlocks, and outcomes as something to verify in the released build.
What “healthy and thriving” means in Planet Zoo 2
Frontier presents released animals as part of a conservation loop rather than as animals simply disappearing from a completed zoo. You take on conservation projects, meet specific requirements, move eligible animals into Wildlife Reserves, and manage those reserves as expansive ecosystems that you create. The official Steam description says players can release animals into “fully customisable, expansive Wildlife Reserves across the globe in living ecosystems created by you.” Read that as the central design goal: release is a gated transition into a managed ecosystem, not a guaranteed health result.

The practical objective is to make the reserve a credible natural home for the animals you intend to release, then use the reserve’s observation and research systems to detect problems and improve conditions.

Frontier’s Wildlife Reserves announcement describes the feature this way: “Design, rewild and observe a network of entirely natural homes that allow your animals to thrive.” The wording describes the purpose of the system, not a published guarantee that one decoration, terrain change, or research action will produce a specific health outcome.

- Raise animals to a stable condition in the zoo. Keep normal care, habitat suitability, food, water, enrichment, and species behaviour in mind while the animals are still under zoo management. Frontier confirms species-specific needs; it does not publish a universal welfare percentage that makes an animal eligible.
- Open the release information for the conservation project. Look for the game’s own requirement panel, tooltip, or objective text. Record every condition exactly as the released build displays it instead of relying on a community guess. The public listing confirms a requirement gate but does not name its contents.
- Prepare the Wildlife Reserve before transferring animals. Use the reserve-building and rewilding tools to create a natural home appropriate to the species. Before release: prepare animals without inventing a threshold
Start with species needs
The official description supports a broad rule: animals have individual species needs and behaviours, so a generic “good enough for every animal” habitat is unlikely to be a sound plan. Build your zoo habitats around the needs the game exposes for that species, then use the same information when designing the reserve. A species that requires a particular type of space, social arrangement, food, water, or enrichment should not be treated as interchangeable with another species simply because both can occupy a similar-looking biome.

Use observed condition, not a made-up percentage

If the release screen says an animal is ineligible, follow the stated reason; if it gives no reason, capture the exact wording and check official documentation or a later patch note rather than guessing.
Keep a simple pre-release record
- Species and individual identifier, if the game provides one.
- Current health or welfare indicators exactly as displayed.
- Any habitat, diet, social, enrichment, or behavioural warnings.
- The conservation project and reserve destination selected.
- The release requirement text and whether the animal is marked eligible.
This record is useful because the sources do not establish whether zoo welfare carries over numerically into reserve health. You can compare the animal’s state before release with its state afterward without assuming that the two systems use identical measures.
Build a reserve that can support the species

Frontier describes Wildlife Reserves as living ecosystems and natural homes. That changes the design question from “Where can I place this animal?” to “What conditions must exist here for this species to live naturally?” Use the reserve’s customisation and rewilding tools to establish the kind of environment the game presents as appropriate for the species, then check whether the reserve reports any shortages or incompatibilities.

Because no official guide in the available material lists reserve variables, avoid claiming that a particular tree, terrain type, fence, water feature, climate setting, or decoration is mandatory. Observation is explicitly named by Frontier, so it should be part of your routine after every release. Look for any information the game surfaces: changes in health, behaviour, movement, feeding, social activity, population, or reserve warnings. Record the time of the observation and the animal group affected if you are testing a change.

Do not claim that observation itself feeds animals, increases welfare, or prevents illness. The announcement confirms observation as an activity, not its exact mechanical effect.
How to approach research
Frontier says research can improve reserves, but the reviewed material does not say which research topic is best or what it unlocks. Start with the research option whose description directly matches the problem you can observe. If animals lack a resource, choose a resource-related option when the game labels one; if the reserve reports a habitat or ecosystem issue, choose the corresponding category. This is a decision rule for reading the game’s own labels, not a claim about unpublished research trees.
