To keep downloads and updates running while your PS5 is idle, enable Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Stay Connected to the Internet. Then turn on the automatic-update options for games, apps, or PS5 system software, and choose Power > Enter Rest Mode instead of shutting the console down.
The internet setting is the prerequisite; the update switches determine what the console downloads and whether it installs those files automatically. You can therefore configure a hands-off setup, or download updates in the background while retaining control over when a suspended game is interrupted.
What must be enabled
Rest Mode does not automatically keep downloading unless the console is allowed to maintain its internet connection. PlayStation Support states that automatic downloads and updates in Rest Mode require Stay Connected to the Internet to be enabled. This is separate from the update switches for games, applications, and system software.
The relevant controls are:
- Stay Connected to the Internet: keeps the PS5 online while it is in Rest Mode.
- Auto-Download: downloads available game and app updates.
- Auto-Install in Rest Mode: installs downloaded game and app updates without waiting for you to resume the console.
- Download Update Files Automatically: downloads PS5 system-software update files.
- Install Update Files Automatically: installs eligible system-software updates automatically.
Sony notes that some updates can still require approval, so these settings improve unattended updating but cannot guarantee that every update will complete without your intervention. See PlayStation Support’s automatic-downloads and updates instructions for the official explanation.

How to configure your PS5 step by step
1. Keep the internet connection active in Rest Mode
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open Power Saving.
- Select Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
This is the essential setting. If it is off, the PS5 can enter Rest Mode, but it will not remain online for automatic downloads and updates. This option should be checked first whenever a download that worked previously stops working, because a later settings change can disable it even if the game-update options are still on.
2. Enable automatic game and app downloads
- Return to Settings.
- Open Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Select Automatic Updates.
- Turn on Auto-Download.
- Optionally turn on Auto-Install in Rest Mode.
PlayStation’s update guidance distinguishes downloading from installing. With Auto-Download only, the update file can arrive while the console is in Rest Mode, but you decide when to install it after returning to the PS5. This is useful when you want a large patch ready without allowing an installation to alter the game session you left suspended.
3. Decide whether automatic installation is appropriate
Enable Auto-Install in Rest Mode when you want the most hands-off behavior and do not need to preserve a suspended game exactly as it is. Leave it off when you want to keep a suspended game open and choose the installation time yourself. Sony specifically advises using Auto-Download without Auto-Install when preserving a suspended game matters. The separate controls are described in PlayStation Support’s PS5 and PS4 update instructions.
These choices are not competing download methods. Both use the same internet connection in Rest Mode; the difference is what happens after the update file has been downloaded. Download-only gives you a checkpoint at which to review the update. Download plus install minimizes the number of manual steps, but the console may need to apply the update before you can resume the title.
4. Configure PS5 system-software updates
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open System Software.
- Select System Software Update and Settings.
- Turn on Download Update Files Automatically.
- Turn on Install Update Files Automatically if you want eligible system updates installed without manual confirmation.
Game and app update settings do not replace these system-software settings. If you want both types of updates handled automatically, configure both menus. Conversely, if a game patch is downloading but a console update is not, that does not necessarily indicate a network failure; it may simply mean that the system-software toggles were never enabled.
5. Enter Rest Mode correctly
- Press the PS button to open the control center.
- Select Power.
- Choose Enter Rest Mode.
Do not select Turn Off PS5. Rest Mode is the console’s power-saving state and supports functions such as automatic system updates. The PS5 must remain connected to power for Rest Mode downloads to continue. If the console is fully turned off, the settings above cannot make it perform Rest Mode downloads.
What happens after you put the PS5 in Rest Mode
With the internet connection enabled and the relevant automatic-update switches turned on, the PS5 can check for available downloads while idle. A game or app update may download automatically, then either wait for you to install it or install in Rest Mode, depending on your selection.

System-software updates follow their own download and installation switches. A game update can therefore work while a system update does not, or the reverse, if only one set of controls was enabled. Treat “game and app updates” and “PS5 system software” as two separate jobs when checking the setup.
Automatic behavior is not absolute. PlayStation Support says an update may occasionally require approval. When that happens, the PS5 will wait for you rather than completing the process unattended. A successful setup should therefore be understood as “the console can download and, where permitted, install updates in Rest Mode,” not as a promise that every update will finish without a prompt.
Auto-Download and Auto-Install also answer different questions. Auto-Download asks whether the update files may be fetched while you are away. Auto-Install asks whether the PS5 may apply those files in Rest Mode. If you are trying to preserve a suspended game, the first setting is the safer choice according to Sony’s guidance.
How to verify that Rest Mode downloading is working
- Confirm the console shows the Rest Mode indicator rather than being fully powered off.
- Recheck Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and make sure Stay Connected to the Internet is still on.
- Check the game/app Automatic Updates menu and verify Auto-Download is enabled.
- For system software, revisit System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- After waking the PS5, open the downloads or notifications area to see whether the update is waiting for installation or has completed.
Verification is easiest when you identify the update type first. For a title patch, inspect the game or app update controls and then the download status after waking the console. For a console update, inspect the system-software menu and look for the downloaded file or an installation prompt. If one category works and the other does not, compare the corresponding settings instead of changing every option at once.

Check the Rest Mode and network settings first
Make sure the PS5 is actually in Rest Mode and that Stay Connected to the Internet has not been disabled. Then open Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. A failed or unstable connection can prevent the console from reaching update servers.
Run the test with the console awake so you can read the result, then return to the Rest Mode settings and verify them again. This two-part check separates a disabled Rest Mode connection from a broader network problem. If the test fails, correcting the network connection is more relevant than rebuilding the database or reinstalling a game.
Restart the console and check its system software
Restart the PS5, then check whether the console itself is running current system software. PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance lists restarting and verifying system software among the initial steps for update problems. A restart is a routine first step, not a replacement for the Rest Mode configuration. After restarting, confirm that Stay Connected to the Internet and the applicable automatic-update options remain enabled before testing Rest Mode again.

An update cannot finish if there is insufficient space. Open Settings > Storage and review the available capacity. Sony’s storage guidance explains that you can delete games to free room or move content to another supported storage location; see How to manage PS5 console storage space.
Storage is a separate blocker from internet access. The console may be online and able to download, yet still fail to complete the update because there is no room to save the required files. Check capacity before buying accessories or attempting more involved recovery procedures.
There is an important distinction for PS5 games: titles stored on USB extended storage must be moved to the PS5’s internal storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before they can be played. USB storage can still be part of a capacity-management plan, but it does not make a PS5 game playable directly from that drive. Moving content to free internal space is therefore different from making a USB-stored PS5 game playable.
Escalate a single-game or app failure
If only one title repeatedly fails to update, Sony’s guidance includes deleting and reinstalling that game or app. This removes the local installation, so use it only after checking the connection, restarting, and confirming available storage. It is an escalation for a title-specific failure, not a normal requirement for enabling Rest Mode downloads.

These are recovery steps for a persistent title-specific problem, not requirements for ordinary Rest Mode setup. Because Safe Mode changes how the console starts, use the option only when the simpler checks do not resolve the affected game or app.
Retry a repeated system-software download failure
For a PS5 system-software download that repeatedly fails, retry the update from the downloads or uploads screen. If the normal download still fails, Sony documents a manual USB update procedure using a drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT and the console’s Safe Mode. Follow the current PlayStation procedure exactly, including its required folder and file naming, because a manually prepared update drive will not work if those details are wrong.

The USB method is a recovery path for repeated system-software failures. It is not needed for routine game patches and is not a substitute for enabling Stay Connected to the Internet. Use the current PlayStation instructions when preparing the drive and entering Safe Mode rather than relying on an old folder layout or file.
Contact PlayStation Support if the failure persists
After testing the connection, restarting, checking storage, and applying the appropriate game or system-software recovery step, contact PlayStation Support if the PS5 still cannot download or install updates.

Every row assumes the console is placed in Rest Mode with Power > Enter Rest Mode. The table does not describe four different connection methods; it shows how the same connection prerequisite combines with different update preferences.
Common mistakes that stop Rest Mode downloads
- Turning on Auto-Download but not Stay Connected to the Internet: the game setting alone cannot keep the console online.
- Choosing Turn Off PS5: a fully powered-down console is not in Rest Mode and cannot perform Rest Mode downloads.
- Configuring only game updates: system software has a separate settings page.
- Assuming every update installs unattended: some updates can require approval.
- Ignoring storage: a network connection does not help when the update has no room to save.
- Using Safe Mode too early: clear-cache, rebuild-database, reinstall, and USB-update procedures are escalation options, not part of the normal setup.
- Confusing download with installation: Auto-Download can complete while Auto-Install is off, leaving an update ready for you to apply later.
- Checking the wrong update menu: a game patch and a PS5 system-software update have different automatic controls.
A practical setup and diagnosis sequence
When setting up a new console or correcting a failed download, use this order so each check answers one specific question:
- Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Open Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates. Turn on Auto-Download, then decide whether Auto-Install in Rest Mode fits your suspended-game preference.
- Open System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and configure the download and installation switches for console updates.
- Check Settings > Storage so a lack of capacity does not look like a network failure.
- Use the control center’s Power > Enter Rest Mode command.
- If the update does not appear after waking the console, run Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection, restart the PS5, and check system software.
- Only then move to the title-specific reinstall or Safe Mode cache/database steps, or the manual USB system-update method when the failure concerns PS5 system software.
This sequence keeps routine configuration separate from recovery. It also helps identify whether the issue is the Rest Mode connection, the update category, available storage, or one particular title.

Why did a game update download but not install?
Auto-Install may be turned off, or the update may require approval. Wake the PS5 and check the downloads or notifications area, then install the update manually if it is waiting.
