Short answer: an Xbox purchase does not automatically include a downloadable Windows PC copy. If the digital game is marked Xbox Play Anywhere, one purchase covers Xbox and Windows PC. Otherwise, find its separate PC edition in the current PC Game Pass catalog or buy that edition. A supported console game may also be streamable through Xbox Cloud Gaming, but streaming is not the same as owning a PC installation. Save and cross-progression support must be checked for each title.
Choose the route that matches your game
There are three legitimate ways to continue an Xbox game on a PC. They differ in whether the game runs natively on Windows, whether your existing purchase grants access, and whether you need a subscription or another purchase.

Think of these as different entitlements. Play Anywhere is a purchase entitlement for two platforms. PC Game Pass is access while the title remains in the catalog and your plan remains active. Cloud Gaming is remote play from Microsoft’s servers, not a Windows copy.
What Xbox Play Anywhere actually gives you
One purchase, two participating platforms
Xbox describes Play Anywhere games as playable on Xbox consoles and Windows PC with one digital purchase. The program is title-specific. Owning an Xbox game does not, by itself, prove that a PC license is included.

Xbox reported more than 1,000 Xbox Play Anywhere games in an August 28, 2025 update. That is a dated count, not a promise that every Xbox title is included or that the number is unchanged today.
How to verify a title
- Open the game’s current Xbox Store listing or the official Xbox Play Anywhere listing.
- Look for the Xbox Play Anywhere mark in the product details.
- Confirm that the listing refers to the edition you own. A similarly named deluxe, remastered or bundled edition can have different entitlements.
- Check add-ons separately. The base game may be Play Anywhere while a particular expansion, currency pack or bundle has separate terms.
If the mark is absent, treat the Xbox purchase as a console entitlement only until the store listing says otherwise. Do not buy a PC version on the assumption that the mark is implied by the publisher, release date or Xbox branding.
Install a Play Anywhere game on Windows
Before you start
- Use the Microsoft account that owns the digital game or has the applicable subscription.
- Install the Xbox app for Windows and sign in. Store labels can change, but the account, library and install controls remain the relevant places to look.
- Check available storage and the game’s Windows requirements on its current listing.
Installation steps
- Open the Xbox app on the PC and sign in with the owning account.
- Search for the exact game title.
- Open its product page and select the Windows PC install option if it is offered.
- Choose the installation drive and confirm the download.
- Launch the game from the Xbox app or Windows Start menu after installation completes.
If the app shows a price instead of an install button, stop before paying. Recheck the account, the edition and the Play Anywhere mark. A price can indicate that you are viewing a different edition, a PC-only listing or an account that does not own the entitlement.
Use the PC edition through PC Game Pass
When this is the right option
For a non-Play Anywhere game, look for a Windows PC edition in the current PC Game Pass catalog. If the title is listed there, the subscription supplies access while the catalog and plan eligibility continue. If it is not listed, you need the game’s PC edition as a separate purchase; the console entitlement does not establish a native PC license.

Find and install the catalog version
- Open the Xbox app for Windows and sign in.
- Browse the PC Game Pass section or search for the game.
- Read the platform and edition details on the product page. Select the Windows PC version rather than a console-only listing.
- Choose Install, select a drive and wait for the download.
- Before launching, check whether the page identifies a separate publisher account, launcher or add-on requirement.
Game Pass catalogs, plan benefits and regional availability can change. A title visible in the console catalog is not automatically in the PC catalog. Check the live PC listing immediately before installing or subscribing.
When buying the PC edition is preferable
A separate PC purchase makes sense when the game is not in your current PC catalog, you want permanent access independent of a subscription, or you need an edition that the catalog does not include. Compare the exact edition and included content before checkout; buying a PC copy is not a guarantee that console progress or add-ons will appear on Windows.
Stream an owned console game instead of installing it
What “Stream Your Own Game” means
Xbox’s July 28, 2025 announcement said Game Pass Ultimate members could stream more than 250 select games they owned, beyond the Game Pass catalog, through the Xbox PC app in the 28 countries where Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) was supported at that time. It named titles including Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, Mafia: Definitive Edition and The Callisto Protocol.
Those figures describe a historical announcement snapshot. They are not a current count of streamable games or supported countries. The owned-game catalog, plan rules and country list can change, so verify the live Xbox Cloud Gaming listing for your location.

Check eligibility
- Confirm that the exact console game is listed for cloud streaming, not merely available for console download.
- Confirm that your country currently supports Xbox Cloud Gaming.
- Confirm that your membership includes the required cloud feature. The July 2025 owned-game announcement specified Game Pass Ultimate.
- Use a stable, low-latency connection and a compatible input method. Streaming quality depends on the network and service conditions rather than the PC’s graphics hardware alone.
Start a stream from the Xbox PC app
- Open the Xbox app on Windows and sign in.
- Open the cloud gaming area.
- Search your owned games or browse the streamable catalog.
- Select the title and choose the cloud-play option when it appears.
- Wait for the session to connect, then sign in inside the game if prompted.
A stream does not install the Windows edition. If the title later leaves the streamable list, you lose that route even though your console purchase remains yours.
Will your Xbox saves transfer to PC?
Do not assume that every save transfers automatically. Play Anywhere establishes a cross-device program, but the available official material does not establish universal save compatibility for every game, edition or storefront. Save and cross-progression behavior is a per-title question.
Check before switching
- Open the game’s current Play Anywhere and product information.
- Look for the publisher’s statements about cross-save, cross-progression or shared progression between Xbox and Windows PC.
- Verify that you are using the same account identity and the intended edition on both devices.
- Check whether the game uses separate PC and console servers, profiles or launchers; those can affect progression even when the title is available on both platforms.
Protect progress during the transition
- Keep access to the Xbox until the PC version has launched and loaded your expected progress.
- Do not delete local or cloud saves while testing the PC version.
- Finish any pending synchronization on the console before closing the game.
- Make a note of the profile, edition and account used if the game offers more than one sign-in path.
If the PC starts from the beginning, quit without overwriting anything, then verify the title’s current cross-save instructions with the publisher. A fresh PC save can replace or complicate recovery if you continue playing before resolving the account or synchronization issue.

A per-game decision checklist
- Identify the ownership. Is the game a digital purchase, a subscription entitlement or another console license? Record the exact edition and account.
- Check Play Anywhere. If the official listing displays the mark, install the Windows edition under the owning account.
- Check PC Game Pass. If Play Anywhere does not apply, search the current PC catalog and confirm the Windows edition, plan and country.
- Check cloud streaming. If you do not need a local installation, see whether the owned console edition is currently streamable in your country and under your plan.
- Check progression. Confirm cross-save or cross-progression for this exact title and edition before abandoning the console.
- Choose the least costly route that meets your needs. Play Anywhere avoids a second game purchase; PC Game Pass trades ownership for catalog access; streaming avoids a download but depends on service availability and connection quality.
Common problems and fixes
The Xbox app asks me to buy the game again
- Sign out and back in with the account that made the digital purchase.
- Compare the store page’s edition with the edition in your console library.
- Look for the Play Anywhere mark rather than relying on the game’s Xbox branding.
- If the mark is absent, check PC Game Pass or the separate PC edition; a second purchase may be required.
The game appears on Xbox but not in the PC catalog
Console and PC Game Pass catalogs are not identical. Search the PC section specifically and read the platform label. If no Windows edition is listed, use a separate PC purchase or investigate cloud streaming if the owned console title is supported.

Cloud play is missing
Cloud availability is title-, plan- and country-dependent. Check the live listing, confirm that your membership includes the feature, and verify current country support. The July 2025 announcement’s 28-country figure should not be treated as a current universal list.
The PC version has no progress
Do not continue playing on the new profile until you identify the game’s supported save method. Confirm the account, edition and publisher guidance, and preserve the console’s local and cloud data while troubleshooting.
An add-on is missing
Base-game entitlement and downloadable content can be handled separately. Recheck the add-on’s platform and edition compatibility, then install it under the same account used for the game. If the add-on is tied to a different storefront or edition, the console purchase may not cover the PC version.

You own a digital game with the Play Anywhere mark
Install the Windows edition through the Xbox app under the owning account. Before switching permanently, confirm the game’s own cross-save information and test the existing progress.

You own a console game with no Play Anywhere mark
Search the current PC Game Pass catalog. If the Windows edition is included, install it while the subscription is active. If it is not, choose between buying the PC edition and checking whether your owned console copy is streamable.
You want to avoid a large download
Check cloud eligibility first. If the title, plan and country qualify, streaming can let you continue without installing a PC build. It remains dependent on a supported service and network, and it does not create a native PC license.
Your progress matters more than the purchase price
Keep the Xbox available, verify cross-progression before buying another edition, and test synchronization before deleting anything. A cheaper access route is not useful if it cannot load the progress you need.

- Every game you intend to continue has a confirmed PC route: Play Anywhere, PC catalog, separate PC purchase or cloud streaming.
- The exact editions and add-ons you need are available on that route.
- The game publisher confirms the save or progression behavior you require.
- Your account credentials and any required secondary sign-ins are working on the PC.
- At least one successful PC launch has loaded the expected progress.
- You have checked current plan, catalog and country rules rather than relying on dated availability figures.
The safe assumption is simple: an Xbox purchase follows you to PC only when the game’s current entitlement explicitly says it does. Otherwise, plan for a PC edition purchase, PC Game Pass access or cloud streaming, and verify saves separately.
