Yes—usually. Valve’s Steamworks guidance says a retired game remains in existing players’ libraries, where those players can continue to download, install and launch it. Delisting removes the normal store purchase option; it does not ordinarily erase an existing entitlement. To protect your access, install the game, launch it online, make a tested local backup, copy saves and custom files separately, and verify whether the game depends on publisher servers or online authentication.

That protection has limits. A backup cannot recreate a shut-down server, a removed authentication service, an invalid operating-system environment or a revoked Steam key. Steam describes access to its content and services as subscriptions under the Steam Subscriber Agreement, so treat preservation as practical risk reduction rather than a promise of permanent access.

What happens when a Steam game is delisted?

A delisting removes the ordinary store listing or purchase path. It is different from removing an entitlement from an account. In its retirement FAQ, Valve says: “Retired games will remain in players’ Steam libraries. Those players will continue to be able to download, install, and launch the game.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That policy applies to existing players in the ordinary retirement case, but it does not guarantee that every feature will keep working indefinitely. A game may depend on hosted multiplayer servers, a publisher login, a separate launcher, periodic online checks or an operating system that is no longer supported. Compatibility and entitlement exceptions can also matter.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Delisting is not the same as a revoked key

A revoked activation key is a separate situation. Steam can remove a key from an account, including limited-time beta keys or keys it determines were obtained fraudulently. If the entitlement itself has been removed, keeping an old installer or backup does not restore the right to launch it.

Do not describe a Steam purchase as unrestricted ownership or as a legal guarantee that access lasts forever. The Steam Subscriber Agreement characterizes access to Steam content and services as subscriptions governed by that agreement.

Can I still download a delisted Steam game?

If the game is already in your library, open the Library and look for it there. A delisted title can remain downloadable even though a new customer can no longer buy it from the store. If it does not appear, first check that you are signed in to the account that acquired it and review the account’s purchase history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam’s missing-games guidance also notes that a game may look uninstalled when its files are still on the computer. Check the library and the drive where Steam installs games before deleting anything or starting a new download.

When the title is not in your account

If a delisted game was never attached to your Steam account, the normal store route may no longer be available. Do not assume that finding an installer, a product key or copied files creates a valid Steam entitlement. The legitimate options are limited to an entitlement already on your account or an authorized way the publisher or platform still provides.

Preserve the game before relying on it

Use this sequence for any delisted title you want to keep playable. The first three steps protect the actual game download; the later steps protect the data and conditions that a download alone cannot preserve.

  1. Confirm the owning account. In Steam Library, locate the title and verify that you are signed in to the account that owns it. Check purchase history if the listing is missing. Do not remove the game from the account while troubleshooting.
  2. Install it while it is obtainable. Download the complete game, let Steam finish installation and patching, then launch it once while online. A first online launch can reveal a required publisher launcher, sign-in, entitlement check or other dependency before the title becomes harder to diagnose.
  3. Read the game’s requirements and notices. Look for publisher announcements about server closures, authentication changes, launcher retirement and supported operating systems. Valve specifically warns that hosted services may become unavailable after retirement.
  4. Create a local Steam backup. In Library, open the game’s Properties, select Installed Files, choose Backup game files, and select a destination folder. Wait for the backup to finish completely.
  5. Move a copy to separate storage. Copy the completed backup to another drive or other storage location. A second copy protects against a failed internal drive, accidental deletion or corruption of the first copy, but it does not preserve online services or an account entitlement.
  6. Preserve saves and custom content separately. Copy save files, configuration, screenshots, mods and other files you care about. Steam’s backup behavior does not reliably include all of this data, and save locations differ by title.
  7. Test the result. Verify that the backup can be read and that the game can launch from the installed copy. If practical, test on the computer or operating-system version you expect to use later, and keep notes about any launcher or login requirement.

How to back up a Steam game

Use Steam’s built-in Backup game files feature

  1. Open Steam Library.
  2. Right-click the game, or open its game page, and choose Properties.
  3. Open Installed Files.
  4. Select Backup game files.
  5. Choose the destination and allow Steam to complete the operation.
  6. Copy the finished backup to a separate location and test it.

Steam says this feature supports games whose complete download, installation and patching occur through Steam. A title that relies on a third-party downloader or installer may not be restorable from Steam’s backup in the same way. Treat a completed backup as an artifact to verify, not as proof that every future installation will work.

Back up the installed directory as an additional copy

A direct copy of the installed game directory can be useful as a second preservation measure, particularly when a title contains local configuration or mod files. Keep the Steam backup and the directory copy separate, and record which Steam library folder they came from. Neither copy substitutes for the account entitlement or for a publisher service that the executable contacts during startup.

Where are saves and mods stored?

Save files are title-specific. They may be inside the game directory, in a user profile folder, in a documents folder, or in another location chosen by the developer. Search the game’s own documentation or support information for its save location, then copy the relevant saves and configuration files manually.

Do the same for mods, custom maps, key bindings, profiles and other personal content. Steam states that backups for Valve-created games omit saved games and custom content; third-party titles can use different locations and backup rules.

Use Steam Cloud carefully

Steam Cloud can synchronize supported data between computers, but it is not a complete archival system. Offline play delays synchronization, and changes made on different devices can produce a conflict when they reconnect. Keep a manual copy of important saves before switching devices, reinstalling or experimenting with an older installation.

Can I play a delisted game offline?

Sometimes. Steam’s Offline Mode is intended to let you play without reconnecting to Steam each time, particularly for single-player games. It does not turn an online-only game into an offline game, and Steam does not certify that every title works in Offline Mode.

Test the exact game and mode

  1. While connected to the internet, launch the game and confirm that the mode you need works.
  2. Switch the Steam client to Offline Mode before disconnecting.
  3. Disconnect from the internet and start the game from the Steam library.
  4. Test the specific single-player campaign, local multiplayer or other mode you expect to use.
  5. Reconnect later and check for save conflicts before accepting a cloud version that could overwrite newer local data.

Use this test to discover the game’s real behavior, not to assume that every delisted title will remain playable offline. A game that requires a publisher server, matchmaking service or online authentication will fail when that external dependency disappears, even if all local files are intact.

How to prevent an unwanted update

Steam provides an update setting that lets you update a game only when you launch it. This can defer an automatic update while you preserve an older installed version, but it is not a permanent version lock. Steam states that launching the game forces an update immediately.

If you are preserving a working installation, avoid launching it casually after changing the update setting. Keep a separate copy of the installed files or backup before allowing Steam to update, and document which version was working. An update-control setting cannot guarantee that an old build will continue to launch, nor can it restore a server or authentication system that has been retired.

When a backup is not enough

The game’s servers have shut down

Local files can preserve a single-player executable and its data, but they cannot recreate matchmaking, hosted worlds, leaderboards, account services or other server-side features. If the game has no offline alternative, those features end when the service ends.

The game still requires online authentication

Some titles check a Steam or publisher entitlement at launch, during installation or at intervals. Test the game while online and record which launcher or login it invokes. Offline Mode cannot bypass a required authentication service.

The key or entitlement was revoked

A revoked key is not the same as a store delisting. A backup may contain files, but it cannot re-add an entitlement that Steam removed from the account.

The operating system or required launcher changed

A preserved executable may depend on a runtime, driver, launcher or operating-system behavior that is no longer available. Keep the game’s documented requirements with the backup and expect that future compatibility may require a supported environment. Do not assume that copying files alone solves this problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The backup is incomplete or untested

A backup that stopped before the download, installation or patch completed may omit required files. A copy that has never been restored can also hide permission, path or launcher problems. Check the backup’s contents, retain the original installation until the copy is verified, and test a launch before deleting the source.

If the game is already delisted

Start with the least destructive checks:

  1. Sign in to every Steam account you might have used and inspect each library and purchase history.
  2. Search the computer’s Steam library folders for the installed files; the client may show the game as uninstalled even when data remains.
  3. If the title is in the correct library, install or launch it while online and note any launcher, server or authentication requirement.
  4. If it launches, immediately create a Steam backup, copy saves and custom files, and test Offline Mode if single-player use matters.
  5. If Steam reports that the entitlement is missing or the key was revoked, treat that as an account-access issue rather than a missing-download problem. A local copy cannot resolve it.

Troubleshooting common failure points

The game is in purchase history but not visible in Library

Confirm the account, remove library filters that hide installed or uninstalled titles, and check whether the files remain in a Steam library folder. Do not delete a surviving installation until you have created a backup.

Steam offers no Backup game files option

Check that the game finished downloading, installing and patching through Steam. Titles that use a third-party downloader or installer may not support Steam’s backup workflow. Preserve the installed directory and personal files separately, then test whether the title can launch from that copy.

The game launches online but not in Offline Mode

Identify the failing step: Steam sign-in, a publisher launcher, an entitlement check or an online-only mode. Offline Mode cannot replace any of those services. If the title has a local mode, launch and test that mode specifically before disconnecting.

A save disappeared after reconnecting

Stop changing devices, make a copy of every local save, and compare the local and cloud versions before choosing a synchronization option. Offline sessions can delay syncing and create conflicts; a manual copy gives you a recovery point.

An update broke a previously working installation

Use the separate backup or directory copy you made before the update, and avoid launching the preserved installation until you understand Steam’s update behavior. The “update only when I launch” setting can defer an update but cannot prevent one when the game is launched.

Preservation checklist

  • The title appears in the Steam account that acquired it.
  • Purchase history and library status have been checked.
  • The game has completed installation and has launched online.
  • Publisher servers, launchers and authentication requirements are recorded.
  • A Steam Backup game files archive has completed, where supported.
  • A second copy is stored separately.
  • Saves, settings, mods and custom content are copied outside the Steam backup.
  • Offline Mode has been tested with the exact mode you intend to use.
  • The backup has been tested before the original installation is removed.
  • You understand which features will fail if an external service or entitlement disappears.

The practical answer is therefore straightforward: an existing Steam owner can generally keep downloading, installing and launching a delisted game, but should preserve the files and personal data before circumstances change. Backups protect against a missing download; they do not preserve servers, authentication, compatibility or a revoked entitlement.
