Keep outdoor cushions looking better by removing dirt before it builds up, cleaning only as the cushion’s care label allows, rinsing away every trace of soap or treatment, and letting the cushion dry completely before use or storage. Reduce direct sun and bring cushions indoors before extreme weather when practical. These steps lower the conditions that cause fading and mildew, but no outdoor fabric is permanently fade-proof or mildew-proof in every situation.
Fabric construction matters. Sunbrella’s guidance, for example, permits a specific soap-and-water routine for light cleaning and a bleach treatment for mildew, while another manufacturer may require different products or prohibit machine washing. Treat the label on your exact cover and cushion as the controlling instruction.
Why outdoor cushions fade or develop mildew
Sunlight breaks down color over time
Ultraviolet exposure gradually changes dyes and can weaken fibers. Shade, a covered patio, and shorter periods in direct sun reduce the exposure that drives color loss. A cushion that is advertised as UV- or fade-resistant should still be rotated and protected when practical; resistance slows change rather than making the color permanently unchanged.

That is a manufacturer claim, not an independent comparison of every outdoor fabric. You can review the product information at Sunbrella’s outdoor-cushion fabric page.

Mildew usually has a food-and-moisture problem
Moisture alone is not the whole explanation. Dirt, pollen, spilled drinks, body oils and other residue can remain on a damp cushion and support mildew growth. Sunbrella’s 2023 care guide puts the distinction plainly: “Sunbrella fabrics do not promote mildew growth, however, mildew may grow on dirt and other foreign substances if not removed from the fabric.” That means routine soil removal is preventive care, not just cosmetic cleaning.
Rain can leave a cushion wet inside as well as on the surface. Stacking, covering or storing it before it is fully dry traps that moisture and can leave odor or growth that is harder to remove.
Start with the care label and cushion construction
Before applying any cleaner, find the sewn-in label or the furniture maker’s care instructions. The cover may be removable, but the foam, batting, stitching, backing and zipper can have separate limits.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Check whether the label permits hose cleaning, spot cleaning, machine washing, or dry cleaning.
- Note any warnings about bleach, solvents, pressure washing, hot water, or tumble drying.
- Confirm whether the cover can be removed without damaging the zipper or altering the fit.
- Look for instructions that apply to the whole cushion rather than only to the fabric swatch.
If the label is missing, contact the furniture or fabric maker before using bleach or putting the cover in a washing machine. A method that is safe for one outdoor textile can discolor another fabric or damage cushion components.
A maintenance routine that prevents most problems
1. Remove loose debris before it is ground in
Brush or shake off leaves, grit and other loose material regularly, and clear debris after windy weather. Use a soft brush; aggressive scrubbing can roughen the surface and spread soil deeper into the weave.
2. Rinse or spot-clean fresh dirt promptly
Rinse a dirty area or spot-clean it while the residue is still on the surface. Prompt cleaning reduces the amount of organic material available to support mildew and avoids the harder work of removing an old stain.
3. Rinse away all cleaning residue
Soap left in the fabric can attract dirt and leave a film. Use enough clean water to remove the cleaner, paying attention to seams, piping and the underside where suds can collect.

4. Air-dry completely
Stand or position the cushion so air can reach all sides, and do not put it back on the furniture or into a storage bin while it is damp. Complete drying is especially important after rain, rinsing or stain treatment.
5. Inspect seams and hidden areas
Check zippers, welting, underside panels and the foam edge for trapped dirt, odor or moisture. A clean top surface does not prove that the interior is dry.
How to fit care into a season
There is no universal calendar interval because use, shade, local weather and the fabric label differ. Instead, tie maintenance to events. Brush cushions after windy weather, deal with spills while they are fresh, and inspect them after extended rain or periods when furniture has been covered. A covered cushion still needs inspection because a cover can reduce evaporation and hold damp fabric against the seat.
At the beginning and end of a use period, examine both sides, seams, ties and zippers. Look under overlapping cushions and along the furniture frame where leaves and wet soil collect. Early removal is gentler than trying to strip a set-in stain with a stronger chemical later.
Sunbrella’s light-cleaning method (only where the label permits)
For Sunbrella upholstery, the manufacturer’s 2023 guide recommends this conservative routine. Use it as a model only when your own cushion instructions allow the same approach.
- Brush off loose dirt. Remove dry debris before adding water.
- Hose down the fabric. A normal garden-hose rinse loosens surface soil; avoid forcing water into the cushion if the furniture maker warns against saturation.
- Use mild soap and water. Apply the solution with a soft-bristle brush and work gently across the affected area.
- Rinse thoroughly. Continue until no visible soap remains and runoff is clear.
- Air dry. Leave the cushion exposed to moving air until the fabric and interior are fully dry.
The complete instructions are in Sunbrella’s 2023 Upholstery Care and Cleaning guide. The guide’s soap-and-water method is for light cleaning; it is not a guarantee that every stain or odor will disappear.
Make the light-cleaning process safer
Work on one manageable section at a time so the cleaning solution does not dry on the fabric. Keep cushions separated while rinsing, and check the underside before declaring the job finished. If the maker permits a removable cover, confirm whether the foam should be removed first and whether the zipper must be closed for washing. Never assume that a removable cover is machine-washable merely because it has a zipper.

How to treat visible mildew safely
Check compatibility before using bleach
Do not copy a bleach formula onto an unidentified outdoor cushion. First verify that the fabric and the complete cushion construction permit bleach. Protect adjacent upholstery, painted surfaces, wood, metal and plants. Sunbrella warns that bleach can discolor non-Sunbrella fabrics and can harm the natural environment; follow the bleach container’s safety and disposal directions.

For Sunbrella upholstery where the label permits this treatment, the manufacturer specifies 1 cup of bleach and 1/4 cup of mild soap per gallon of water. Apply the solution to the affected area and allow it to soak for 15 minutes. Then clean gently, rinse thoroughly, and air dry completely. These are care-guide quantities, not a performance statistic or a universal recipe.
- Move the cushion away from materials that could be stained or damaged.
- Test the solution on a hidden area if the manufacturer’s instructions permit testing.
- Apply the measured solution to the mildew-affected area.
- Let it stand for 15 minutes, keeping the area wet during that period.
- Use a gentle brush to loosen remaining residue.
- Rinse with abundant clean water until no cleaner remains.
- Air dry fully before returning the cushion to service.
Sunbrella’s care documents, including its SGS guide, also discuss named fabric-cleaning and mildew-stain products. Confirm compatibility with your label before using any branded cleaner; a product intended for one fabric is not automatically safe for another. See Sunbrella’s SGS Care and Cleaning guide for its cautions.
When a mildew spot is not the whole problem
Surface spots can return if soil or moisture remains in foam, seams or the underside. Treat the complete permitted area rather than repeatedly dabbing only the visible mark, then rinse and dry every side. If a musty smell persists after a full label-approved cycle, ask the maker whether the cushion can be serviced. Repeatedly increasing chemical strength does not remove water trapped inside and may cause color or material damage.
Reduce fading without creating a mildew problem
Use shade and rotate cushions
Place cushions under a canopy, umbrella or roof when possible, and rotate or reverse compatible cushions so one face does not receive all the direct sun. Do not reverse a cushion if the underside is not designed for seating or if the label prohibits it.

Bring them in before extreme weather
When a severe storm, prolonged rain or other extreme weather is expected, move cushions indoors if practical. Sunbrella recommends bringing cushions inside before extreme weather and emphasizes checking the furniture maker’s instructions before removing or machine-washing covers. Its guidance is summarized in Sunbrella’s outdoor-cushion care article.
Never store a damp cushion
Dry cushions after cleaning and after wet weather before placing them in a deck box, closet or other confined space. Use breathable storage where possible, and leave room for air circulation rather than compressing wet fabric against plastic.

Choosing replacement cushions or covers
Cleaning is usually the right first response. Replacement makes sense when the cushion has irreparable color loss, damaged seams, persistent odor or contamination that remains after label-approved cleaning. A replacement cover can also be practical when the foam is sound but the original fabric is no longer serviceable.
| What to compare | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| UV and fade resistance | Is the claim stated for the exact fabric, and how is the color incorporated into the fiber? | “Fade resistant” is not a universal rating. Sunbrella attributes its claim to yarn dyed through with stable dye. |
| Mildew and water resistance | What does the maker actually claim, and does the care label still require routine cleaning and drying? | Resistance does not replace removing dirt or preventing damp storage. |
| Cleaning permissions | Are soap, bleach, hose rinsing, machine washing or removable covers allowed? | A fabric’s marketing claim is less useful if its permitted care method does not fit your situation. |
| Fit and construction | Do dimensions, foam thickness, ties, zippers and piping match the furniture? | A cover that fits poorly can expose edges, hold water or fail at the seams. |
| Replacement availability | Can you buy a matching cover or cushion later? | Replaceable covers can extend the useful life of the foam and frame. |
| Warranty | What failures are covered, for what period, and what exclusions apply? | Coverage varies by exact product and use conditions. |
Sunbrella lists a five-year limited warranty for upholstery fabrics covering loss of strength or color from normal usage and exposure. Verify the current warranty, product eligibility and exclusions before relying on that statement; it is not a promise that every cushion will retain its original appearance for five years.

Sunbrella also describes its outdoor-cushion fabrics as fade proof, UV resistant, water resistant, and resistant to mold and mildew, with yarn dyed through using stable dye. Those are Sunbrella’s product claims, not guarantees for all outdoor textiles. A fabric that resists water or mildew still needs soil removal, rinsing and complete drying.
Simple decision guide: clean, repair or replace?
- Clean: Choose label-approved light cleaning when the fabric is structurally sound and the issue is loose dirt, a fresh spill or a small removable mark.
- Treat mildew: Use a mildew procedure only when the exact label authorizes it. Sunbrella’s measured bleach treatment applies to qualifying Sunbrella upholstery, not automatically to other materials.
- Repair: Contact the maker when a zipper, seam, tie or cover is damaged but the foam and frame remain usable.
- Replace: Consider a replacement cover or cushion for persistent odor, recurring growth after complete approved cleaning, irreparable fading, damaged foam or contamination that cannot be safely removed.
Replacement outdoor cushions made with Sunbrella fabric are one option when an existing cushion is no longer worth cleaning. Buying new cushions is not necessary for ordinary dirt that can be removed with the approved routine.
Troubleshooting common outcomes
| Symptom | Likely issue | Next safe step |
|---|---|---|
| Green, black or musty spots return | Dirt or moisture remains in seams, underside or foam, or the cushion is stored damp. | Recheck the label, clean the whole permitted area, rinse thoroughly, and dry all sides. If odor persists, seek the maker’s service guidance. |
| White or sticky residue after cleaning | Soap or treatment was not fully rinsed. | Rinse with clean water again and air dry; do not add stronger chemicals automatically. |
| Color changes after spot treatment | The product was not compatible, was too concentrated, or affected nearby material. | Stop using it, rinse if the label directs, document the product used, and contact the fabric maker. |
| Fabric is clean but still smells | Moisture or contamination may remain inside the cushion. | Dry completely with air circulation. If the odor remains or the interior is damaged, ask the manufacturer whether the cushion should be serviced or replaced. |
| Cover cannot be removed | The cushion construction is not designed for laundering. | Use the approved on-cushion method; do not force the zipper or machine-wash without written instructions. |
| Seams, zipper or foam are damaged | Cleaning cannot restore structural integrity. | Prioritize repair or replacement instead of repeated chemical treatments. |
A practical seasonal checklist
- At the start of use, inspect fabric, seams, ties, zippers and underside panels.
- During use, brush off debris and spot-clean spills before they dry into the weave.
- After rain or washing, separate cushions and air-dry every side.
- Before severe weather, move cushions under cover or indoors when practical.
- Before long-term storage, clean according to the label, rinse away residue and confirm that the interior is dry.
- At the next setup, check for returning odor, mildew, fading or structural damage before putting cushions back into service.
When stronger cleaning is the wrong answer
Repeated applications of stronger chemicals can accelerate color loss, damage stitching or affect adjacent materials without solving moisture trapped in the cushion. Stop escalating treatment when the label does not authorize it, when the fabric is visibly damaged, or when odor and growth return after a complete approved cleaning and drying cycle. The appropriate next step may be manufacturer service, a replacement cover, or a new cushion rather than another chemical application.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I clean outdoor cushions?
Use the care label as the authority and clean in response to conditions: brush off debris regularly, spot-clean spills promptly, and inspect cushions after windy weather, extended rain or covered storage. More frequent cleaning is useful when cushions are exposed to heavy soil or food, but no universal calendar interval applies to every fabric.

No. Sunbrella’s 1-cup-bleach and 1/4-cup-mild-soap-per-gallon formula, with a 15-minute soak, is specific to qualifying Sunbrella upholstery guidance. Check the exact fabric and cushion label first. Bleach may discolor other fabrics and damage nearby materials or plants.

Is mildew growing on Sunbrella fabric itself?
Sunbrella’s 2023 care guide says the fabric does not promote mildew growth, but mildew can grow on dirt and other foreign substances left on it. Removing soil and drying the cushion therefore remain essential.
Should I machine-wash a removable cushion cover?
Only if the furniture or fabric maker explicitly permits it. A removable cover may still have limits related to foam, backing, zipper, fit, water temperature, detergent or drying. If instructions are missing, contact the maker rather than guessing.
How do I stop mildew from returning after cleaning?
Clean the full permitted area, rinse away all soap or treatment, inspect seams and the underside, and air-dry the interior completely. Do not stack or store cushions while damp. If odor or growth returns after an approved cycle, ask about service or replacement instead of repeatedly using stronger chemicals.
Does a UV-resistant fabric never fade?
No. UV- or fade-resistance claims indicate improved resistance, not permanent unchanged color. Shade, rotation and bringing cushions indoors before extreme weather reduce exposure. Sunbrella’s claims about stable dye and fade resistance apply to its specified fabrics, not every outdoor textile.
When is replacement better than cleaning?
Consider a replacement cover or cushion when color loss is irreparable, seams or foam are damaged, odor persists after complete label-approved cleaning and drying, or contamination cannot be safely removed. If the foam and frame are sound, a replacement cover may be sufficient.
The Bottom Line
Keep outdoor cushions cleaner and brighter with a simple sequence: follow the exact care label, brush off debris, clean promptly with an approved method, rinse thoroughly, and air-dry every part before use or storage. Reduce direct sun and move cushions indoors before extreme weather when practical. Reserve bleach or specialty mildew treatments for fabrics whose manufacturer specifically permits them; when odor, growth or structural damage persists, choose manufacturer service, a replacement cover or a new cushion instead of escalating chemicals.
