On a Galaxy phone with One UI 8, open Settings > Notifications > Hide content while locked and select Hide when locked. That removes notification previews from the lock screen while leaving the notification itself available. To protect only certain apps, use Settings > Notifications > App notifications, choose an app, open Show or hide content when locked, and select Hide when locked.
Choose between hiding every preview and hiding selected apps
Samsung provides two levels of lock-screen privacy. A global setting hides the content of notifications from all apps whenever the phone is locked. A per-app setting lets you keep previews for low-risk apps while concealing messages, mail subjects, calendar details, or other sensitive text from selected apps.

These controls concern the text and details shown on the lock screen. They are different from turning notifications off altogether. If you still need to identify an alert without exposing its contents, hiding the preview is usually the better compromise.

The setting is built into Galaxy software, so this task does not require a paid privacy app, accessory, or subscription. A screen protector or a different lock-screen theme cannot activate notification-content hiding; the relevant control is in Samsung’s notification settings.

Check which One UI version your Galaxy phone uses
The wording and location of Samsung’s controls changed between One UI 7 and One UI 8. Before troubleshooting, check the software version on the phone:
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone.
- Tap Software information.
- Read the One UI version entry.
Samsung states that menus can vary by model and software version. Its One UI 7 guidance also notes that features may differ by device, carrier, and network. If your labels do not exactly match the instructions below, use the closest notification or lock-screen option rather than assuming the feature is unavailable.
Checking the version first prevents a common mistake: trying to find the One UI 8 phrase Hide content while locked on a phone whose software still uses the older Lock screen notifications screen. The setting may have moved or been renamed, not removed.

Samsung’s One UI 8 notification guide, updated April 19, 2026, uses the label Hide content while locked. This is the fastest way to stop previews from appearing on the lock screen across the phone.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Hide content while locked.
- Select Hide when locked.
With Hide when locked selected, a notification can still indicate that an app has an alert, but its message or other preview details are concealed while the device is locked. To restore previews, return to the same screen and select Show always.
What the two choices mean
- Hide when locked: hide notification details on the lock screen and show them after the phone is unlocked, subject to the app’s own notification behavior.
- Show always: allow notification content to appear on the lock screen even while the phone is locked.
Use the global option when you do not want to audit individual apps. It also covers newly installed apps unless you later change an app’s own visibility setting. This is useful on a shared desk, in a household, or anywhere someone could see the lock screen without having the screen-lock credential.
Global hiding affects visibility, not delivery. Sound, vibration, badges, and the notification’s presence can continue according to the app’s other notification settings. If you need to stop an alert completely, use the app’s notification permission or category controls instead.

Per-app control is useful when you want, for example, message previews hidden but weather or delivery updates visible. Repeat the procedure for each app whose content should stay private.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap App notifications.
- Select the app you want to change.
- Tap Show or hide content when locked.
- Select Hide when locked.
For an app whose previews you are comfortable showing, leave its setting at Show always. The app-level choice is the practical alternative to hiding everything globally, but it requires you to maintain the list as you install or begin using additional sensitive apps.

Apps worth reviewing first
- Messaging and email apps that can display names, message text, or subject lines.
- Work and collaboration apps that may expose internal project or customer information.
- Banking, payment, shopping, and account-security apps that can reveal transaction or verification details.
- Health, dating, journaling, and other apps whose alerts may disclose personal information.
The setting is based on the app selected in App notifications; it does not require changing the app’s notification categories one by one unless you want different behavior within that app. If an app has several separately listed entries, change the entry that actually generates the alert and test it afterward.
A useful way to decide is to start with the apps whose previews would cause the greatest problem if another person read them. Leave routine alerts on Show always only when seeing their details on a locked screen is acceptable.
One UI 7: use Lock screen notifications
On One UI 7, Samsung documents a different route: Settings > Notifications > Lock screen notifications. The screen combines lock-screen notification controls that One UI 8 presents with different wording.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Lock screen notifications.
- Make sure lock-screen notifications are enabled if you want alerts to remain visible in some form.
- Use the content control to choose whether notification details are shown or hidden.
Choose a One UI 7 notification style
Samsung’s One UI 7 guide lists three lock-screen styles:
- Dot: a compact indicator that an alert exists.
- Icons: app icons identify which apps have notifications.
- Cards: a larger notification presentation that can include more visible detail when content is allowed.
Within the same area, Samsung describes controls for hiding or showing content and for selecting which apps may show lock-screen notifications. The app-selection option is associated with Show content. If you want an app’s alert to remain available without exposing its text, choose the hidden-content option rather than allowing that app to show content.
Style and content are separate decisions. Choosing Dot or Icons reduces the amount of information presented, but still use the hide-content control when the actual notification text must not appear. Conversely, hiding content does not require you to change from Cards if you prefer that layout after unlocking.
If your phone shows different labels
Samsung’s general lock-screen guidance may place the controls under Settings > Notifications > Lock screen, while other builds use Lock screen notifications or Hide content. The exact route depends on the Galaxy model and installed software.
Use this approach when the documented One UI 8 or One UI 7 path is not visible:
- Open Settings and use its search field.
- Search for lock screen notifications, hide content, or show content.
- Open the result under Notifications or Lock screen.
- Look for a choice equivalent to Show always and Hide when locked, or a Show content/Hide content control.
- Apply the setting, lock the phone, and send a harmless test notification to verify what appears.
If search returns no matching setting, confirm the One UI version again and install any available system update through Settings > Software update. Do not assume that a control shown in a guide for one model is present with the same name on every Galaxy phone. Carrier and network variations can also affect which features are offered.

“Locked apps” and Secure Folder are not the same setting
People sometimes use “locked apps” to mean apps placed in Samsung’s Secure Folder. Secure Folder is a separate protected storage area for apps and private content. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6 user manual (2024) explains that Secure Folder can require its own preset lock method even when the phone itself is unlocked.
Secure Folder protection and lock-screen notification privacy address different things:
- Secure Folder lock: protects access to the apps and files stored inside Secure Folder.
- Lock-screen content setting: controls whether notification details are exposed on the lock screen.
The manual does not establish one universal notification-preview behavior for every app inside Secure Folder. Therefore, do not assume that placing an app in Secure Folder automatically hides every notification detail. Check the relevant notification settings directly, then lock the phone and test with a non-sensitive alert.
If your goal is to protect the app itself from someone using an unlocked phone, Secure Folder addresses that access problem. If your goal is to stop a passerby from reading a message on the locked display, configure the lock-screen content setting as well. They can be used together, but neither setting should be treated as a substitute for the other.
Verify that private previews are actually hidden
A setting change is worth testing because models and software builds can present notifications differently. Use a controlled check instead of waiting for a sensitive message:

- Lock the phone with the side key.
- Trigger a test alert from the app, or have someone send a message containing harmless text.
- Check the lock screen while the phone remains locked.
- Unlock the phone and confirm that the notification details are available after authentication.
If the text is still visible, check the following points:
- You changed the same app that generated the test alert; similarly named apps can have separate entries.
- The phone is actually locked rather than merely displaying an always-on screen or an unlocked home screen.
- You changed the lock-screen content option, not only the app’s general notification permission.
- A software update or carrier-specific build has moved the control to Lock screen notifications or Lock screen.
- The app has its own privacy setting that controls what appears in notifications; review that app’s notification settings as well.
Test both a newly received alert and an existing notification already sitting in the shade. This confirms whether the change applies to new lock-screen presentations and helps distinguish a notification-content issue from an app that has independently formatted its alert.
Common decisions and trade-offs
Hide everything globally
This is the low-maintenance choice. It prevents accidental disclosure from apps you may forget to review, including newly installed apps. The trade-off is that you lose useful context for every lock-screen alert and must unlock the phone to learn what happened.
Hide only selected apps
This preserves at-a-glance information from apps you consider safe while protecting sensitive services. The trade-off is maintenance: each new app, account, or change in how you use an app may require another review in App notifications.

Use a minimal lock-screen style
On One UI 7, choosing Dot or Icons can reduce visible information compared with Cards. Style is separate from the content setting, so choose both: a compact style controls presentation, while hidden content controls whether notification details can be read.
What these settings do not guarantee
Samsung’s support material establishes the lock-screen content controls, but it does not promise identical behavior for every device, carrier, software build, or app. It also does not document a single rule for all Secure Folder apps. Treat the labels on your phone as authoritative, and verify the result on the specific Galaxy model you use.
Hiding content is also not a substitute for protecting the phone itself. Use a strong screen-lock method, keep software current, and avoid leaving an unlocked device visible to other people. The notification setting is one layer: it limits what a passerby can read before authentication.

Will a system update reset my choice?
Samsung documents that menus and features can vary by software version, but the support material does not promise how an update will preserve every existing choice. After a major One UI change, check the setting and repeat the harmless lock-screen test.
Is there an accessory that enables this privacy feature?
