Keep alerts visible but hide their readable content. On an iPhone, set Settings > Notifications > Show Previews > When Unlocked; on Android, use Notifications > Notifications on lock screen and turn off Show sensitive content when that option is available. These notification controls do not, by themselves, remove iPhone Lock Screen widgets. Widget access has its own setting under Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Allow Access When Locked.
What each privacy setting actually controls
A locked phone can reveal information in two different ways: a notification alert can display text or other details, and a Lock Screen widget can show data or offer actions. Treat them as separate surfaces. Hiding notification previews does not automatically hide widget data, and disabling iPhone widget access does not preserve the widgets on the Lock Screen.

Apple’s user guide describes the iPhone preview choices and notes that previews can include Messages text, lines from Mail, and Calendar invitation details (Apple Support). Google documents global and per-app Android choices but warns that some steps vary by device (Google Android Help).

Set previews to appear only after unlocking
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Show Previews.
- Select When Unlocked.
With When Unlocked, notifications can still occupy the Lock Screen, so you do not have to turn alerts off simply to stop nearby people reading them. Apple defines this option as: “Previews appear only after iPhone is unlocked.” The alert may therefore identify that an app has something to show while withholding the message, Mail excerpt, or calendar invitation detail until authentication.

Choose between When Unlocked, Never, and Always
- When Unlocked: the balanced choice when you want an alert to remain useful but do not want its contents readable on a locked phone.
- Never: suppresses notification previews entirely. Choose this when even an unlocked glance should not reveal preview text through the notification presentation.
- Always: shows previews while the iPhone is locked. This is the least private choice and is appropriate only when the convenience of readable alerts outweighs shoulder-surfing concerns.
The setting changes preview content, not the existence of every alert. The exact app name, sender information, icon, or other summary that remains visible can depend on the app and the iPhone configuration, so inspect your own Lock Screen after changing it.
Check the result with a realistic notification
- Lock the iPhone after selecting When Unlocked.
- Have a test message or other notification arrive from an app that normally includes text.
- Look at the Lock Screen from the distance and angle at which another person might see it.
- Confirm that the alert is still apparent but the message body, Mail line, or Calendar invitation detail is not readable.
- Authenticate, then verify that the expected preview appears after unlocking.
This check matters because apps format notifications differently. A privacy setting can be correct while the amount of non-sensitive identifying information still varies by app.
iPhone: control widgets separately from notifications
Disable Lock Screen widget access
- Open Settings.
- Tap Face ID & Passcode.
- Enter the device passcode when prompted.
- Under Allow Access When Locked, turn off the option for Lock Screen widgets (the exact list of allowed features can vary with the iOS configuration).
Apple documents this control as a privacy boundary for features available before the phone is unlocked. Turning widget access off increases privacy by removing the at-a-glance widget interaction while locked. It does not merely blur the existing widget; the locked view no longer provides that widget access.
Understand privacy-sensitive widget rendering
Some widgets are designed to avoid exposing their data. Apple’s WidgetKit security documentation explains that a widget can replace sensitive data with a placeholder or redaction when it is not appropriate to display the content (Apple’s WidgetKit security guide). This behavior is widget-dependent: it is not a promise that every widget will redact itself, and it is not the same as disabling Lock Screen widget access.

Apple’s developer documentation describes the widget-extension model and its privacy-sensitive rendering options (Creating a widget extension). If a particular widget continues to show information that you consider private, remove its Lock Screen access rather than assuming that the widget will supply a placeholder.
Pick the iPhone combination that fits your situation

Do not select Never when your actual requirement is simply “keep the alert but hide its message.” When Unlocked is the more targeted setting for that outcome.
Android: hide sensitive lock-screen content while keeping selected alerts
Use the global lock-screen notification control
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Open Notifications on lock screen.
- Turn off Show sensitive content, if that switch is present.
Google’s documented wording is device-dependent, and the company cautions: “Important: Some of these steps may vary based on your device.” On one phone the same control may be grouped under a lock-screen, privacy, or notification sub-menu. If you cannot find the path, use Settings search for Notifications on lock screen, Show sensitive content, or Sensitive notifications.
Use an app-specific restriction when only one app is a problem
Android also supports per-app choices in the notification settings documented by Google. Open the notification settings for the app that carries private information and choose the available lock-screen option to hide sensitive content or show no notifications for that app. The labels and exact taps differ among Android versions and manufacturers, so follow the wording shown on your phone rather than assuming that every device has the same switch.

This approach is useful when you want a work-chat or banking app hidden on the Lock Screen but still want ordinary calls, reminders, or other approved apps to announce themselves. A per-app restriction should not be confused with disabling all Android notifications.
Do not confuse silent notifications with hidden content
Android distinguishes notification behavior such as Alerting and Silent. Making an alert silent changes how it announces itself; it does not necessarily remove sensitive text from the Lock Screen. If the issue is readable content, use the lock-screen privacy control or the app’s sensitive-content setting. If the issue is sound or interruption, adjust the alert behavior separately.
Verify the Android result on your specific phone
- Apply the global or per-app setting.
- Lock the phone and trigger a notification from the app you changed.
- Check whether the alert remains visible and whether its message or other sensitive detail is hidden.
- Repeat with an app you did not restrict, so you can confirm that useful alerts have not been unintentionally removed.
- Unlock the phone and verify that the notification can still be opened and read according to the app’s normal behavior.
The exact amount of app name, sender, icon, or summary left on the Lock Screen depends on the Android build, manufacturer interface, and app. Treat the phone’s own test result as authoritative for what a nearby person can see.

How to decide whether to hide previews, hide widgets, or hide both
Hide previews only when notification text is the exposure
Choose iPhone When Unlocked or Android’s Show sensitive content control when your concern is the wording inside messages, Mail notifications, calendar invitations, or similar alerts. This preserves the signal that something needs attention while withholding the most revealing part.

Hide widgets when the widget itself exposes data or actions
Use iPhone’s Allow Access When Locked control when a widget can reveal information independently of a notification. Disabling widget access removes the useful at-a-glance interaction, so it is a deliberate trade-off rather than a preview-style filter.
Hide both when the lock screen must disclose as little as possible
On iPhone, combine When Unlocked (or Never, if you do not want previews at all) with widget access disabled. On Android, use the global sensitive-content control and add per-app restrictions for the apps whose alerts should not appear. Recheck the Lock Screen after each change; changing one surface does not guarantee that the other is private.

An alert disappeared instead of losing its text
- On iPhone, confirm that Show Previews is set to When Unlocked, not a broader notification or Lock Screen removal setting.
- On Android, check whether you selected “show no notifications” for the app instead of “hide sensitive content.” Those are different outcomes.
- Review the app’s own notification categories and permissions if the alert is absent even after privacy settings are restored.
A widget is still visible after changing notification previews
This is expected: iPhone notification previews and widget access are separate controls. Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Allow Access When Locked and disable widget access if the widget itself should not appear or be usable before unlocking.

A placeholder or redaction can be the widget’s privacy-sensitive behavior rather than a malfunction. Apple documents this as an available WidgetKit security pattern, but support is determined by the individual widget. If the remaining placeholder still reveals more than you want, disable Lock Screen widget access.

The Android menu name does not match
Use Settings search for Notifications on lock screen, Show sensitive content, or Sensitive notifications. Google explicitly notes that menu steps vary by device. Once found, read the option’s description carefully: hiding sensitive content is different from hiding every notification.
A notification still identifies an app or sender
Privacy controls do not guarantee identical redaction across every app and device. The platform, app notification design, and device configuration determine what non-message information remains. Test with the actual apps and viewing angles that matter to you, and use a per-app restriction or disable widget access if the remaining identification is unacceptable.
A practical privacy checklist
- Identify whether the exposure is notification text, widget data, or both.
- On iPhone, start with Settings > Notifications > Show Previews > When Unlocked.
- On Android, open Notifications on lock screen and turn off Show sensitive content when available.
- For a single Android app, use its per-app lock-screen notification choice instead of suppressing every app.
- On iPhone, review Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Allow Access When Locked separately for widgets.
- Do not treat Silent Android notifications as a privacy filter for their text.
- Lock the phone, generate representative alerts, and inspect what a nearby person can actually read.
- Unlock the phone and confirm that the alerts and actions you still need remain available.
What these controls cannot promise
These settings are designed to limit information presented on the Lock Screen; they are not a guarantee that every app, icon, sender label, or widget state will look identical across phones. Apple documents the preview choices and widget-access boundary, while Google documents Android’s controls with an explicit device-variation warning. The safest configuration is therefore the one you verify on your own device with the apps and widgets you use, rather than one inferred from a generic screenshot or menu path.
