The reliable way to control a local AI agent is to enforce boundaries outside the prompt: run it in a dedicated OS sandbox, container, or virtual machine; mount only the files it needs; deny network access by default; expose a narrow tool set; keep secrets out of its environment; and require approval for destructive or external actions. Prompts can describe your intent, but they cannot remove permissions from code the agent is able to execute.
What a local agent can access
A local agent is limited by the execution environment available to it, not by the task description alone. If the process can read a directory, invoke a shell, reach a network destination, or read an environment variable, generated code and subprocesses may be able to do the same. OpenAI’s sandbox documentation states: “Agent-generated code can access the files, credentials, and network available to its environment.”
That makes the first security question concrete: which files, tools, credentials, and destinations must be available for this task, and which must remain impossible to reach? Write that list before launching the agent. Treat everything not on the list as denied.
Build the boundary at the operating-system level
Use a dedicated workspace
Create a project directory containing only the source files, test fixtures, and configuration the agent needs. Do not start the agent from your home directory, a company-wide share, a cloud-sync root, or a directory that contains SSH keys, browser profiles, password stores, tax records, or unrelated repositories.

Filesystem isolation is meaningful only when the operating system enforces it. Anthropic describes its sandbox approach as limiting which directories an agent can access and modify, while OpenAI recommends isolated compute and separate environments so workloads do not share data.
Choose a sandbox, container, or virtual machine
A sandbox uses OS primitives to restrict a process. A container packages a separate filesystem view and process environment, but it is not automatically a complete security boundary; its mounts, users, capabilities, and host integrations must be configured carefully. A virtual machine generally provides a stronger separation at the cost of more setup and resource overhead. For a high-risk agent that can execute arbitrary code, a disposable VM or a hardened sandbox is preferable to a casually configured container.
| Option | What it isolates | Configuration issues to verify | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| OS sandbox | Process access to selected paths, system calls, and sometimes network destinations | Allowed directories, writable paths, child-process rules, network proxy behavior | Frequent local development with a supported sandbox runtime |
| Container | Filesystem view, process namespace, users, and selected capabilities | Host mounts, privileged mode, device access, socket mounts, container escape exposure | Repeatable builds and disposable task environments |
| Virtual machine | Guest operating system and its attached virtual devices | Shared folders, clipboard, USB passthrough, snapshots, guest network, host integration | Untrusted code or agents that need a stronger separation |
| Application-only prompt or tool filter | Requested behavior inside the application | Whether code execution, subprocesses, plugins, or alternate tools bypass the filter | Additional control, never the sole security boundary |
Anthropic’s October 20, 2025 engineering article describes a Claude Code sandbox using Linux bubblewrap and macOS seatbelt, with configurable directory and network host access. It identified that runtime as a beta research preview at that time, so availability and labels may have changed. OpenAI’s May 8, 2026 Codex safety article likewise describes sandbox boundaries alongside approval policies. These are examples of implementation patterns, not a universal configuration recipe; verify the current settings for your operating system and agent.

Make an access inventory
- List input paths. Include the exact source directories, fixture files, package caches, and configuration files required to complete the task.
- List output paths. Identify where edits, builds, logs, and temporary files may be written.
- List commands and tools. Decide whether the agent needs a shell, compiler, test runner, version-control client, browser automation, or a particular MCP function.
- List network destinations. Name package registries, internal APIs, model endpoints, or documentation hosts that are genuinely required.
- List data flows. Mark anything that could leave the machine, including uploads, issue comments, email, commits, deployment triggers, and telemetry.
- Set an expiration. Decide when mounts, credentials, and approvals should stop working.
If you cannot explain why a path or capability is needed, do not grant it initially. Add access only after a failed, observable operation shows a real requirement.
Deny network access by default
Filesystem isolation does not stop an agent from sending data through a network connection that remains available. Use a default-deny outbound policy where feasible, then allow only the domains, ports, and protocols required for the task. Route permitted traffic through a controlled proxy or firewall so decisions are logged and can be revoked without changing the agent.
- Cover the agent, generated scripts, package managers, and child processes—not just the top-level process.
- Separate model-serving traffic from arbitrary web access. A model endpoint does not imply permission to browse the internet.
- Block direct DNS and require name resolution through the policy layer when possible.
- Watch for local services, Unix sockets, loopback APIs, and mounted host sockets that provide an indirect network path.
- Use an allowlist with exact destinations rather than a broad “trusted internet” category.
Anthropic describes filesystem and network isolation as complementary controls: its sandbox applies OS-level restrictions to spawned scripts and subprocesses and routes network access through a proxy that enforces domain restrictions. OWASP’s 2026 guidance similarly recommends outbound allowlists for agentic applications.

Expose only the tools the task needs
Tool permissions should be narrower than the agent’s general capabilities. A documentation task may need file reads and a search function but no shell. A test-fixing task may need a compiler and test runner but not publishing, deletion, email, or cloud-account tools.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use static and dynamic allowlists
OpenAI Agents SDK documentation demonstrates static allowlisting of MCP tool names and supports dynamic filtering. Its local MCP server classes also support input and output guardrails. Use a static list for the baseline, then apply task-specific filtering at runtime. Reject unknown tools rather than silently passing them through.
- Prefer separate read and write functions instead of one function with an unrestricted path argument.
- Constrain path parameters to the workspace and reject traversal, symlink escapes, and device paths.
- Limit command arguments, working directories, CPU time, memory, and child-process count.
- Remove publish, delete, transfer, permission-changing, and account-administration tools unless the task explicitly requires them.
- Validate tool inputs before execution and validate outputs before returning them to the model.
A tool allowlist is an additional layer, not a substitute for OS isolation. A compromised or misconfigured tool can still expose everything available to the process behind it.
Keep credentials outside the agent
Environment variables, credential files, SSH agents, browser sessions, package-manager tokens, and cloud metadata endpoints are all potential secrets. If generated code can inspect the environment, it may be able to read those values even when the model was told not to.
OpenAI warns that injecting a stored secret into an environment still exposes it to agent-generated code. Prefer a trusted external proxy or service that holds the credential and permits only narrowly scoped requests to approved destinations. Give the agent an opaque operation such as “upload this artifact to the approved test endpoint,” not the raw token that can be reused elsewhere.
- Use short-lived, least-privilege credentials with an explicit audience and expiration.
- Keep production keys, personal access tokens, and signing keys outside the sandbox.
- Do not mount a home directory merely to obtain one configuration file; copy a sanitized version into the workspace.
- Disable cloud instance metadata access from the agent network.
- Rotate any credential that may have been visible during an untrusted run.
Require approval for consequential actions
Make read and analysis operations automatic, but pause before an action that can destroy data, publish information, spend money, alter permissions, or contact an external party. OWASP recommends explicit human confirmation for high-impact or destructive actions.

What an approval prompt should show
- The exact tool and arguments to be executed.
- The files, records, accounts, or destinations affected.
- Whether the action is reversible and how recovery would work.
- The data that will leave the environment, if any.
- The expiration of the approval and whether it applies once or to a class of actions.
Where possible, require a dry run, plan, or diff first. Approve a specific patch or command rather than a vague request such as “continue.” For bulk operations, cap the number of objects per approval and require a new confirmation when the scope changes.
Log enough to reconstruct what happened
Record prompts, tool calls, arguments, approval decisions, execution results, MCP-server use, and network proxy allow or deny events. Include timestamps, the sandbox or VM identifier, the active policy version, and the identity of the approving user. Send logs to storage the agent cannot modify, and protect them from deletion or rewriting.
OpenAI describes exporting prompts, tool approval decisions, execution results, MCP server use, and network proxy allow/deny events. Logs support investigation, but they do not replace preventive controls: a perfect record of an exposed secret does not undo the exposure.
Recommended Free Tools
Review during and after a run
- Stop the run when a tool requests an unplanned path, destination, or privilege.
- Compare file changes with the approved workspace and expected diff.
- Check denied network events for repeated probing or encoded data.
- Inspect child processes and newly created files, not just the agent’s chat transcript.
- Retain the policy and approval records long enough to investigate incidents.
Test the boundary before trusting it
- Place a harmless canary file outside the permitted workspace and verify that a read attempt fails.
- Try a write to a protected directory and confirm the operating system denies it.
- Attempt path traversal, symlink traversal, and access through a mounted host socket.
- Run a script that spawns a child process and confirm the same filesystem and network rules apply.
- Request a connection to an unapproved domain and verify that the proxy or firewall blocks and logs it.
- Check that secrets are absent from environment variables, process arguments, mounted files, and command output.
- Trigger a destructive test action and confirm that execution pauses for an approval showing the target and consequences.
- Review the resulting logs from an account the agent cannot alter.
Repeat these checks after changing mounts, upgrading the agent, adding an MCP server, or moving from a local model to a remote model endpoint. A policy that was safe for one operating system or release may not map identically to another.
Respond if the agent crosses a boundary
Stop the process and revoke network access first. Preserve logs and the sandbox snapshot before cleanup if forensic review may be needed. Remove or rotate credentials that were present, inspect modified files and outbound requests, and determine whether any data reached an external destination. Rebuild the environment from a known-clean image rather than trusting a partially cleaned workspace. Only resume after the policy, tool configuration, and approval path have been corrected and retested.
How the controls fit together
| Control | Prevents | Does not prevent by itself |
|---|---|---|
| OS sandbox, container, or VM | Access outside explicitly exposed resources | Misconfiguration, exposed mounts, or data intentionally supplied to the environment |
| Network allowlist and proxy | Unapproved outbound destinations and unobserved transfers | Exfiltration to an approved but compromised destination |
| Tool allowlist and guardrails | Unneeded functions and malformed or overbroad calls | Abuse of a permitted tool or vulnerabilities in that tool |
| Credential proxy and short-lived tokens | Direct exposure and long-lived credential reuse | Misuse of an operation the proxy intentionally permits |
| Human approval | Automatic execution of selected high-impact actions | Low-impact actions, approval fatigue, or a mistaken approval |
| Immutable logging | Loss of evidence about behavior and policy decisions | The action itself or the data exposure |
Use the layers together. A prompt can express intent, a tool filter can reduce available functions, and an approval gate can stop a dangerous operation; the OS boundary remains the control that determines which files and network interfaces the process can actually reach.

Practical policy for a first deployment
For a low-risk coding task, start with a disposable workspace mounted read-write, reference files mounted read-only, no home-directory access, and no network. Add a package-registry allowlist only if dependency installation is required. Expose file operations and a test runner, but keep delete, publish, external transfer, and account tools disabled. Broker any required service credential through a proxy, require confirmation for edits outside the workspace or for external writes, and export logs to protected storage.
For untrusted repositories or code that can install dependencies, use a disposable VM or a hardened sandbox, block network by default, and destroy the environment after the run. For production changes, separate analysis from execution: let the agent prepare a plan or diff in isolation, then have a human or a separately controlled deployment system perform the approved change.
What the evidence says about prompts and sandboxing
Anthropic notes that giving an agent broad access to a codebase and files introduces prompt-injection risk. Its October 2025 report describes an 84% reduction in permission prompts from its internal use of sandboxing. That is a vendor-reported internal result, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for another agent, operating system, or workload.
The practical conclusion is narrower and more useful: prompts help the model choose safer behavior, while sandbox, network, tool, credential, approval, and logging controls determine what behavior is technically possible and reviewable.
Frequently asked questions
Is a read-only mount enough to protect sensitive files?
No. Read-only protects against writes to that mount, but the agent can still read and potentially transmit anything mounted there. Sensitive data should not be mounted unless the task requires it, and network egress still needs its own restriction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould every local agent run inside a virtual machine?
Not necessarily. A correctly configured OS sandbox may be sufficient for routine, low-risk work. A disposable VM is a stronger choice when the code is untrusted, the agent can execute arbitrary commands, or the host contains high-value data. The decision depends on the agent’s capabilities and the consequence of a boundary failure.

Can I solve this by disabling shell access?
Disabling an unnecessary shell reduces risk, but it is not a complete solution. Other tools, plugins, interpreters, package managers, or subprocesses may still read files or make network requests. Restrict the environment and each exposed tool independently.
What should I do with a required API key?
Keep the key in a trusted proxy or service and expose only a narrowly scoped operation. If direct injection is unavoidable, use a short-lived credential with the smallest permissions, prevent access to unrelated destinations, and rotate it after the run or after any suspected exposure.
Do logs make an agent safe?
No. Logs provide accountability and incident evidence. They do not stop a read, write, or transfer. Enforce the boundary first, then log policy decisions and outcomes in storage the agent cannot change.

How can I tell whether a container is actually isolated?

Should approvals be required for every file edit?
Use automatic approval for bounded edits inside a disposable workspace when the risk is low. Require confirmation when edits leave that workspace, affect many files, change permissions, publish data, delete records, or trigger external systems.
What is the safest way to handle an agent that needs internet access?
Deny direct access and route only required traffic through a proxy or firewall allowlist. Cover subprocesses and package managers, log every decision, and separate model or package endpoints from general web browsing.
