Make a simple plan before you arrive: check the event’s current map and family-safety rules, agree where to meet if separated, and point out where to find staff and medical help. In crowded areas, keep young children within arm’s reach; plan for weather, water, rest and hearing protection, and leave an area if the crowd feels too dense or movement is restricted.
Before you go, check the event’s current arrangements
Festival layouts, facilities and rules can change by venue and event edition. Review the current event map and family or accessibility information, then check:
- Where first aid, information, welfare, security and any staffed family areas are located.
- The organizer’s lost-child procedure and the designated place to go for help.
- Entry and bag rules, including whether personal water bottles are allowed and where water is available.
- Weather plans, shade, toilets, travel arrangements and exit routes.
Explain the plan in words your child can understand. Show them what the meeting point looks like and identify a staff member or staffed help point they can approach. Do not assume a child can navigate a large venue or use a phone on their own.

Keep young children within arm’s reach, especially where people are moving in different directions. SickKids advises families to stay near the edges of dense crowds; avoid pushing into areas where movement is restricted or the crowd feels unsafe. Follow staff instructions and move to a less crowded place if needed.

Avoid carrying a child on your shoulders in a crowd, where uneven ground and other trip hazards can make a fall more likely. Keep an eye on footing as well as on the people around you.
Agree what to do if you become separated
Choose one clear meeting point before entering busy areas, and make sure your child can recognize it. Agree on a simple action if you lose sight of each other: go to the named staffed information or first-aid point, or ask event staff for help. Tell the child not to leave the venue or search through the crowd alone.

For older children and teenagers, agree how you will stay in touch, identify emergency contacts and make sure their phone is charged. Devon County Council recommends discussing communication and meeting arrangements for young people attending festivals and summer events. A phone should be an extra way to coordinate, not the only separation plan.

Plan around heat, sun and changing weather
Outdoor events can mean prolonged exposure to heat, and crowded settings can make it harder to reach safe water, cooling or medical care. WHO’s 2026 mass-gathering guidance treats heat preparation as a shared responsibility for organizers and the public, not something individual families can manage alone. Check event updates and local alerts, and change your plans if conditions become uncomfortable or unsafe.

- Offer regular drinks and check where water is available; do not rely on bringing a bottle until you have checked venue rules.
- Schedule shade and rest breaks, and consider attending during cooler parts of the day where the program allows.
- Dress for the forecast. In sun, use sunscreen and sun-protective clothing such as a wide-brimmed hat.
- For cold or wet conditions, bring suitable layers and check the organizer’s rules for what you may bring.
UKHSA and the Centre for Climate and Health Security’s event-planning recommendations apply to England and include water, shade, cooler scheduling, public information and sun protection. Follow the relevant local public-health advice where you live.
Protect children’s hearing in noisy areas
Bring comfortable, appropriately fitting hearing protection for a child who will be near loud music or other noisy activity. Camp Bestival Dorset’s 2025 attendee information sheet, for example, advised bringing ear defenders for children in noisy areas; that is event- and edition-specific advice, not a universal venue rule. Follow the protection’s instructions and take children away from loud areas if they are uncomfortable. The cited guidance does not establish a particular product or rating as best.

Know when and where to ask for help
Point out help locations early, including first aid, information, welfare and security. Ask event staff promptly if your child is separated, distressed, injured, overheated or otherwise unwell. Use the event’s own lost-child procedure rather than relying on a generic plan; the exact process and available services vary by organizer.

WHO reported nearly half a million medical encounters at mass gatherings, including more than 22,000 heat-related illnesses, in a 2026 evidence summary based on studies published from 1980 through 2025. Those figures cover mass gatherings generally, not festivals or children specifically. WHO also reported that more than 90% of patients could be treated at event venues when on-site medical systems were well organized; that finding is not a guarantee about any particular event or person. These figures underscore why it is useful to know where the event’s medical team is, while leaving medical assessment and treatment to qualified staff.

If you are choosing between events
There is no universal child-age threshold or single lost-child procedure that applies to every festival. Compare the arrangements that matter to your family, using the current information for each event:
- Crowd layout and how the organizer manages density.
- Access to shade, safe water, toilets, first aid and welfare services.
- How clearly family support and lost-child arrangements are explained.
- Bag, entry and bottle rules.
- Sound exposure, quiet areas and the practicality of child hearing protection.
- Travel, meeting arrangements and safe exit options.
These are practical questions for assessing an event, not a published festival safety rating.
