When Fortnite starts hitching, stuttering, dropping frames or crashing immediately after a major PC update, begin with the graphics driver and a file verification in the Epic Games Launcher. Then use Performance Mode or lower visual settings, reduce background load, check temperatures and power settings, and only consider configuration resets or reinstallation if those steps fail.
This guide is for Windows PCs. The available Epic Games troubleshooting procedures covered here do not establish equivalent steps for consoles or mobile devices.
Identify the symptom before changing settings
Different symptoms point to different checks. Note whether the problem is a consistently low frame rate, brief stutters, a crash, or a visual fault. Also record whether it starts immediately after launching, only in demanding matches, or after the computer has been running for a long time. That pattern helps you avoid changing several variables at once.

|---|---|---|
| Low FPS all the time | Requirements, rendering mode, resolution and GPU selection | Performance Mode, lower presets, high-performance GPU and power checks |
| Short freezes or hitching | Graphics driver, verified files, storage and background programs | Update or reinstall the driver, verify files, then inspect heat and storage |

Check that the PC still meets Fortnite’s requirements
Check the current requirements on Epic Games’ live Fortnite requirements page before buying hardware or spending hours on tweaks. Requirements can change as the game evolves, and a computer that previously ran Fortnite acceptably may no longer have enough headroom for new content.
| Tier | Operating system | Memory | Graphics | Processor | Storage guidance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Windows 10 64-bit | 8 GB RAM | Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon Vega 8 | Intel Core i3-3225 or equivalent | Not stated in the minimum values listed by Epic |
| Recommended | Windows 10 or Windows 11 64-bit | 16 GB or more RAM | GeForce GTX 960 or AMD R9 280, or equivalent DirectX 11 GPU with 2 GB VRAM | Core i5-7300U, Ryzen 3 3300U or equivalent | NVMe SSD listed by Epic |
| Epic Quality presets | Use the current Epic requirements page | Use the current Epic requirements page | Higher specifications are listed separately | Use the current Epic requirements page | Use the current Epic requirements page |
These are capability thresholds, not a promise of a particular frame rate. Epic notes that a machine meeting only the minimum specifications may not run the highest settings smoothly. Compare your actual CPU, GPU, RAM, operating-system edition and storage type with the live list. On a laptop, also check whether the game is running on integrated graphics rather than the discrete GPU.
Update or reinstall the graphics driver first
Epic’s post-update guidance says, “Experiencing hitching and crashing after an update may be due to your graphics driver.” That is a possible cause, not a diagnosis for every player, but it is the most targeted first step when the trouble began immediately after a Fortnite update.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Identify the graphics adapter in Windows. Open Settings, choose System, select About, and inspect the graphics information in Device Manager if the model is not shown elsewhere.
- Download the current driver for that exact GPU model from its manufacturer’s official support site. Choose the driver for your Windows edition and architecture.
- Install the update, restart Windows, and test Fortnite in the same mode and scene where the issue appeared.
- If the problem began after a driver change or persists with a normal update, run the manufacturer’s installer again and choose its clean-install or reinstall option when offered. Restart before testing.
Do not install a driver for a similar-looking model, and do not judge the result from the lobby alone. Play long enough to reproduce the hitching or crash. If the issue is unchanged, continue with file verification and settings rather than repeatedly reinstalling drivers.
Verify Fortnite’s installation files
Damaged or incomplete files can produce crashes, missing assets and intermittent stutters after a large download. Epic places verification early in its low-FPS and crash troubleshooting sequence.

- Open the Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
- Find Fortnite, open its three-dot or library menu, and choose Manage.
- Select Verify. Allow the process to finish; it may take several minutes.
- Launch Fortnite and reproduce the original problem before changing another setting.
Verification checks the installed files and replaces files that fail the check. It is a less disruptive step than reinstalling the entire game, so use it before deleting the installation.
Use Performance Mode when frame-rate stability matters most
Performance Mode, labeled Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity, reduces visual complexity to give compatible hardware more rendering headroom. It is the most direct setting change for a PC that is below the recommended specifications or that suffers large frame-time spikes in busy scenes.
- Start Fortnite and open Settings.
- Open the Video tab.
- Find Rendering Mode and choose Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity.
- Apply the change and restart the game when Fortnite requests it.
Performance Mode does not repair damaged files, overheating or a faulty driver. Its benefit is that it lowers the work the GPU and CPU must do. Keep it enabled if stable frame times are more important to you than detailed effects; switch back only after the system is stable and has enough headroom for the desired visual quality.
Start with a controlled low-quality baseline
For a graphical fault or unexplained instability, Epic recommends starting with Quality Presets: Low and 3D Resolution: 100%. Test the game at that baseline. If the problem improves, raise one quality option at a time and retest. This identifies the setting that exceeds your hardware’s current margin instead of forcing you to guess.
Do not lower 3D Resolution below 100% while diagnosing an issue that could be caused by an incorrect or blurry render scale. Once the game is stable, you can deliberately trade image sharpness for additional frame rate if needed.

Make sure Fortnite uses the high-performance GPU
A laptop or a desktop with more than one graphics adapter can launch Fortnite on integrated graphics. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add or select the Fortnite executable, choose Options, select High performance, and save. Restart the game after changing the assignment.
The exact label can differ by Windows version or graphics-driver software. The important check is that Fortnite is assigned to the discrete or high-performance adapter while the game is running, not merely that the adapter is installed.
Reduce competing load, heat and power limits
Close unnecessary background programs
Background applications consume CPU time, memory, disk bandwidth and GPU resources. Close programs you do not need for the match, especially ones that perform scans, synchronize large files or render overlays. Test with the same Fortnite settings after closing them. If the hitching disappears, re-enable programs one at a time to find the conflict rather than permanently disabling every service.
Check cooling when the problem appears late in a session
If Fortnite is smooth at first and becomes unstable after an hour or more, heat is a plausible explanation. Epic advises checking that vents are unobstructed, fans are clean and the PC is in a well-ventilated space.
- Move a laptop off soft bedding or a blocked surface.
- Leave clearance around desktop intake and exhaust vents.
- Clean dust from fans and vents using the computer maker’s safe procedure.
- Compare performance after the machine has cooled, then during a long session.
These steps improve the conditions for cooling; they do not prove that temperature caused the crash. If temperatures remain abnormally high or a fan is failing, hardware service may be necessary.

Review Windows power mode
Power-saving modes can limit sustained CPU or GPU performance, particularly on a laptop running from its battery. Epic’s guidance discusses using a higher-performance Windows power setting when appropriate, while warning that it can reduce battery life. Test while connected to AC power, choose the performance-oriented mode available in your Windows edition, and return to a balanced mode when you need longer battery runtime.
Optional Windows gaming settings
Epic’s separate Windows low-FPS guidance includes assigning Fortnite to a high-performance GPU, changing power settings, enabling Game Mode and turning off Xbox Game Bar. Treat these as targeted experiments, not universal requirements. Change one option, restart Fortnite if necessary, and keep it only if it measurably improves the symptom you are troubleshooting.
Reset the local settings file for update-related crashes
For crashes that began after a PC update, Epic’s dedicated troubleshooting procedure includes deleting GameUserSettings from Fortnite’s local configuration folder and then launching the game again. This removes the stored settings file so Fortnite can create a fresh one.
- Close Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher completely.
- Open the Fortnite local configuration folder using Epic’s current support instructions.
- Locate the file named
GameUserSettingsand delete it. - Start Fortnite and reconfigure your video settings after the new file is generated.
Because this resets a settings file, record any custom display, quality or control-related options you want to reproduce. Epic presents the procedure as a troubleshooting step, not as a guaranteed fix for every crash.

Escalate only after the low-risk checks
If the requirements, driver, verified files, rendering mode, GPU assignment, background load and cooling checks do not resolve the issue, follow Epic’s broader escalation sequence:

- This product has been replaced by our latest generation. Please search for the SANDISK Optimus GX 7100 NVMe SSD
- HIGH-OCTANE GAMING. Experience speeds up to 7,250MB/s read and 6,900MB/s write (1-2TB models), with up to 35% faster performance than previous generation.
- PURPOSE-BUILT. Designed for serious on-the-go gamers, with a PCIe Gen4 interface and SANDISK’s next generation TLC 3D NAND.
- MORE TIME TO CLEAR THAT CHECKPOINT. Built with laptops and handheld gaming devices in mind, with up to 100% more power efficiency over the previous generation.
- DO MORE WITH DASHBOARD. Ensure your drive is optimized for prime performance with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only).
- Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache using Epic’s current Windows instructions, then restart the launcher.
- Run the launcher as administrator for a test. Use this only as a troubleshooting step; it should not become a substitute for correcting file permissions.
- Repeat the driver and file checks after any Windows or graphics-driver change.
- Reinstall the Epic Games Launcher or Fortnite only when the earlier steps fail and you have enough time and storage for a complete download.
- Document the exact crash message, Fortnite version, Windows version, GPU model, driver version, whether the issue occurs in every mode, and whether it appears after prolonged play before contacting support.
Reinstallation is a later escalation because it consumes bandwidth and may leave the underlying cause untouched if the real problem is heat, a driver, power management or insufficient hardware.
Decide whether storage or another component is the bottleneck
Epic lists an NVMe solid-state drive among its recommended PC specifications. Its low-FPS guidance also says an SSD may help an older machine fit the game in memory and reduce hitches or stutters, while warning that results vary by hardware.
That makes storage an optional upgrade, not a universal post-update cure. Consider it when the computer still uses a hard disk, asset loading coincides with the hitch, or the system is short on memory and spends time waiting for storage. Check the motherboard or laptop’s compatible drive format, available slot and capacity before buying anything.
Do not upgrade storage first when monitoring points to a saturated GPU, an overheating CPU, a graphics-driver failure or a PC below the listed requirements in several categories. More storage speed cannot compensate for a graphics adapter that cannot render the selected settings.
Interpret Epic’s Performance Mode examples correctly
Epic’s Performance Mode guidance gives two examples from particular laptops in a standard Squads match at 720p: one moved from 24 FPS before Performance Mode to 61 FPS after it, and another moved from 18 FPS to 45 FPS. These are illustrative results from those laptops and conditions, not a population average, independent benchmark or promise for your computer.
| Example | Before | After | Test context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Example laptop 1 | 24 FPS | 61 FPS | Standard Squads match at 720p |
| Example laptop 2 | 18 FPS | 45 FPS | Standard Squads match at 720p |
Use your own repeatable scene, frame-time behavior and crash frequency to judge success. A higher average FPS is useful, but eliminating severe one-second hitches may matter more for playability.
A repeatable checklist for the next major update
- Before launching, confirm the PC still meets the current requirements and note the installed GPU driver version.
- After the update, test one familiar match or practice scene with your usual settings.
- If hitching or crashing appears, update or reinstall the graphics driver before making many game-setting changes.
- Verify Fortnite through Library > Manage > Verify in the Epic Games Launcher.
- Use Performance Mode or the Low/100% baseline if frame rates or visual stability are poor.
- Confirm the high-performance GPU, close unnecessary background programs and review Windows power mode.
- If degradation appears only after extended play, inspect airflow, dust and fans.
- Use the
GameUserSettingsreset for persistent post-update crashes, then escalate to cache clearing or reinstallation only if necessary.
This order moves from the most update-specific and reversible checks to the most disruptive ones, while keeping hardware purchases conditional on the actual bottleneck.
