You can preserve much of your coding workflow when you change editors, but there is no universal, lossless transfer of every extension and preference. First separate project configuration from personal editor settings, then preserve the source setup with the old editor’s sync or export feature. Use a destination importer when one exists, and verify the result in a real project before relying on it.
What can move—and what may need to be rebuilt
An editor setup is a collection of different things, not one portable configuration. Settings may control appearance or behavior; keybindings map actions to shortcuts; extensions add features; snippets, themes, and project configuration may be stored or handled separately. A destination editor may import some categories without supporting the original extensions themselves.
The most reliable approach is to preserve a source copy, use any documented importer or sync mechanism, and treat the imported setup as a starting point rather than proof that everything transferred. Microsoft documents Settings Sync for sharing settings, keyboard shortcuts, and installed extensions among VS Code installations. JetBrains documents account-based sync and ZIP export/import for specified settings categories. Those capabilities are useful, but they do not establish a universal mapping between editors.
| Item | What to check | Why it needs separate attention |
|---|---|---|
| User settings | Preferences that apply to your editor installation or profile | They are distinct from settings stored with a particular project. |
| Project settings | Configuration inside the project, such as VS Code’s .vscode directory |
They may travel with the project rather than through an editor account or profile. |
| Keybindings | Shortcuts you use frequently, including any customized bindings | A destination may offer a compatible keymap, but individual shortcuts still need checking. |
| Extensions or plugins | Installed tools and the features you depend on | A similarly named extension or plugin is not necessarily available or compatible in another editor. |
| Profile and appearance | Editor profile, theme, and interface customizations | Some importers or profile tools handle these categories; others may not. |
Make an inventory before changing editors
Take stock while the old editor still works. Record the source editor and version, the destination editor, and whether you are moving one personal setup, a project-specific setup, or a named profile. This prevents a common migration mistake: copying personal preferences while overlooking settings that belong to a repository, or assuming a project file will recreate preferences tied to an account.

- List the tools you rely on. Note extensions or plugins by name and write down the job each one performs. “Format on save,” for example, describes a need more usefully than an extension name alone when the destination uses a different tool.
- Identify the shortcuts that matter. Start with commands you use daily, such as opening files, navigating symbols, formatting, or running a task. You do not need to recreate every default shortcut to make the new editor productive.
- Separate personal and project configuration. In VS Code, workspace settings are stored in a
.vscodedirectory at the project root, while user settings are managed separately. Check whether the project has editor-specific configuration before you leave it behind. - Record appearance and convenience choices. Include themes, UI customizations, snippets, and any profile distinctions you actually use. Do not assume that an export or importer covers a category unless its documentation says so.
- Mark the items that must work on day one. Prioritize essential language support, formatting, navigation, and build or test workflows. Keep optional visual preferences separate so they do not delay a functional setup.
This inventory becomes both a migration checklist and a way to compare what the destination imported. It also gives you a fallback if sync is unavailable or the target editor supports only a subset of your setup.
Choose the transfer method that fits your move
| Situation | Best starting point | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Moving between VS Code installations | Settings Sync, or export a profile if you want a discrete copy | Sync covers documented categories but has exclusions and does not sync extensions to or from remote windows. |
| Moving from VS Code to IntelliJ IDEA | Use IntelliJ IDEA’s VS Code import where available | The importer lists specific categories; it is not a promise that VS Code extensions become IntelliJ plugins. |
| Moving settings between JetBrains IDEs | Use JetBrains Backup and Sync or export/import settings as a ZIP | Verify project files and credentials separately from the documented settings categories. |
| Moving between editors without a documented importer | Preserve an export or source copy, then recreate only the high-priority items manually | Check each extension’s function for a destination equivalent rather than expecting automatic conversion. |
Sync is convenient when you are staying within supported installations and want changes to follow your signed-in setup. Export/import gives you a discrete profile or archive to carry and can be useful when you want a snapshot. Neither method removes the need to distinguish project configuration from personal preferences.
Moving between VS Code installations
Use Settings Sync for supported categories
VS Code Settings Sync can share user settings, keyboard shortcuts, and installed extensions across VS Code installations. It also supports profiles. Before depending on it, review the sync configuration and any excluded items so you know which parts of the source setup are intended to transfer.
- On the source installation, sign in and enable Settings Sync using the controls in VS Code.
- Review the categories selected for synchronization and inspect exclusions. If a category or item is excluded, do not treat its absence on the destination as a failed migration; it may simply be outside the configured sync scope.
- On the destination VS Code installation, sign in to the intended account and allow the supported data to synchronize.
- Compare the result with your inventory, especially installed extensions, keybindings, and settings you use in a representative project.
There is an important remote-workspace limitation: VS Code documents that extensions are not synchronized to or from a remote window such as SSH, a development container, or WSL. If your work depends on extensions in one of those environments, check and install what is needed in the appropriate environment rather than assuming the local sync handled it.

Export a profile when you want a portable snapshot
A VS Code profile collects settings, extensions, and UI customizations. VS Code lets you export a profile to a local file or a GitHub gist, and Settings Sync can move profiles across machines. A profile is useful when you want to preserve a particular working setup instead of treating every installation as identical.
- In the source installation, select the profile that represents the setup you want to keep.
- Use VS Code’s profile export option and choose a local file or GitHub gist.
- Keep the exported copy somewhere you can access from the destination. If the profile has distinct purpose-specific settings or extensions, make sure you export the intended profile rather than another one.
- Import or synchronize the profile on the destination VS Code installation, then compare its settings, extensions, and UI customizations with your inventory.
A profile export is a preservation step, not a guarantee that every associated project file or remote-environment extension is included. Keep project-level configuration with the project and check remote environments separately.
Moving from VS Code to IntelliJ IDEA
IntelliJ IDEA documents an import route from VS Code. The import can include a keymap, UI theme, installed extensions, and recent projects. The available route is described for first launch and for a later manual import, so you do not have to rely on having chosen it during initial setup.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the importer for the categories it names, then assess each imported item on its own merits. In particular, an imported VS Code extension listing does not mean the extension’s code runs as an IntelliJ IDEA plugin or that its feature has been recreated. For functionality that matters, look for a destination-supported equivalent and confirm it works in your project.

For familiar shortcuts, IntelliJ IDEA offers a VSCode keymap. Choosing that keymap is a practical starting point if the editor’s shortcut patterns are more important to you than preserving every custom binding. Test your frequent commands afterward: a keymap choice can provide familiarity without proving that every personalized shortcut matches the source.
- Use the VS Code import option during IntelliJ IDEA’s first launch if it is offered, or use the documented manual import route later.
- Select the categories you want to bring in, such as keymap, UI theme, installed extensions, or recent projects, according to the importer’s available choices.
- Choose the VSCode keymap if you want a familiar shortcut layout.
- Open a representative project and check essential commands, appearance, and any imported tools individually.
- For a feature that did not transfer as working functionality, find and configure a destination-supported alternative rather than repeatedly importing the source extension.
Moving settings between JetBrains IDEs
JetBrains documents two ways to carry settings: account-based Backup and Sync, and manual ZIP export/import. Its documented settings categories include keymaps, themes, editor settings, code styles, color schemes, and enabled or disabled plugins. Choose the account-based route when you want supported settings associated with your JetBrains account, or use a ZIP when you want a discrete archive to transfer.
| Method | Useful when | Documented scope |
|---|---|---|
| Backup and Sync | You want account-based synchronization between supported JetBrains environments | JetBrains settings handled by its sync feature; check the feature’s current configuration for what is selected. |
| ZIP export/import | You want a settings archive to carry or import manually | Documented categories include keymaps, themes, editor settings, code styles, color schemes, and enabled or disabled plugins. |
For either method, compare the destination with your inventory. Settings transfer does not by itself establish that project data, credentials, or every plugin-specific dependency is included. Keep any project configuration with the project and handle account access or secrets through their appropriate mechanisms rather than assuming they are part of an editor-settings archive.

When there is no importer: rebuild by function
If the two editors do not have a documented import path, preserve the old setup before attempting a manual move. Then rebuild the destination around required tasks rather than trying to reproduce every source detail. A settings file or shortcut definition from one editor may not use the same format or command names in another; copying it blindly can fail or produce confusing behavior.

- Extensions: Search the destination’s supported extension or plugin catalog for the capability you need. Confirm the candidate supports your language, workflow, and destination editor version before treating it as a replacement.
- Keybindings: Recreate the small set of shortcuts you recorded as essential. Check that the target command exists and that the shortcut does not conflict with a more important default or another custom binding.
- Settings: Translate the intent of each preference. A source setting about formatting or file behavior may have no exact counterpart or may be controlled by a different mechanism in the new editor.
- Project configuration: Keep project-specific files with the project and inspect them in the destination. Do not assume a user-level sync account will carry repository-level configuration.
- Appearance and snippets: Recreate these after core editing and project workflows work. They improve comfort but should not be confused with functioning language tools or build tasks.
Record what you changed as you go. A short list of destination equivalents and deliberate omissions is easier to maintain than an unexplained pile of old configuration files.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validate the migration in a real project
A successful sign-in or completed import only confirms that a transfer action occurred. It does not establish that every expected feature is present or behaves as it did before. Use a representative project to check both editor preferences and the work those preferences support.
- Open a representative project. Choose one with the language, file types, and workflow you use most often. Confirm that project-level configuration is available, including the project’s
.vscodedirectory if it uses VS Code workspace settings. - Check the essentials from your inventory. Confirm that the necessary extensions or plugins are installed and that their features work. An item appearing in an imported list is not sufficient evidence that its functionality is active in the destination.
- Test frequent shortcuts. Run the commands you rely on and correct missing or conflicting bindings. Do not spend time matching rarely used shortcuts until the high-priority set is sound.
- Review editor behavior and appearance. Check relevant preferences, theme, and interface customizations. For settings without a clear counterpart, decide whether the difference matters rather than searching indefinitely for an identical control.
- Exercise the normal workflow. Edit a file, invoke the tools you depend on, and confirm the project behaves as expected. If a tool is absent, determine whether it belongs in the editor, the project configuration, or a remote environment.
- Keep the source copy until the destination is usable. Retain the exported profile or ZIP and leave the original setup intact while you resolve gaps. Remove the fallback only when you no longer need it.
Common migration problems and what to check
An extension is missing after VS Code sync
Check whether the extension category is enabled and whether the item is excluded from synchronization. If the source or destination is a remote window—SSH, a development container, or WSL—remember that VS Code does not synchronize extensions to or from remote windows. Install and verify the required extension in the relevant environment.
Recommended Free Tools
An imported extension does not provide its old feature
Separate the extension’s name from the job it performed. The VS Code-to-IntelliJ IDEA importer names installed extensions among its import categories, but that is not a compatibility guarantee or a conversion to IntelliJ plugins. Identify the feature, then use a destination-supported equivalent if one exists.

Project settings appear different from personal settings
Check which scope contained the original preference. In VS Code, workspace settings live under the project-root .vscode directory and are managed separately from user settings. Inspect the project configuration as well as the settings associated with your editor account or profile.
A keymap is familiar but a shortcut is still wrong
Test the actual command, not just the keymap label. IntelliJ IDEA’s VSCode keymap is an option for familiar shortcuts, but customized bindings and individual commands still merit verification. Correct only the bindings you need for your workflow.
A settings transfer seems incomplete
Compare the missing item with the categories supported by the method you chose. VS Code profiles cover settings, extensions, and UI customizations; JetBrains documents selected settings categories for its sync and ZIP methods. If an item is outside the documented scope, preserve or recreate it separately instead of assuming the transfer failed.
Keep the setup maintainable after the move
Once the destination works, keep a concise record of the editor, profile or sync method, essential extensions, and any project-level configuration that teammates also need. Separate personal preferences from settings meant to travel with a project. This makes a later machine replacement or editor change less dependent on memory.
For teams, treat project configuration as a shared project concern and personal shortcuts or themes as individual preferences unless the team has deliberately standardized them. Avoid putting credentials into general editor settings or a shared project configuration. The documented import and sync features described here cover particular editor settings categories; they are not a general-purpose secret-management or project-migration system.
Microsoft describes VS Code Settings Sync as a way to share “settings, keyboard shortcuts, and installed extensions across your VS Code installs on various machines” in its Visual Studio Code documentation on user and workspace settings. That scope is useful for a same-editor move, while a cross-editor migration still depends on the destination’s named import features and the compatibility of each tool you need.
