Create one Microsoft Edge profile for work or school and another for personal browsing. Each profile has its own settings, favorites, extensions, themes, preferences and, when enabled, account-specific synced data. Edge opens a new profile in a separate window, so you can switch contexts without mixing ordinary browser data. For broader separation of files and Windows settings, use separate Windows user accounts instead.
Create a dedicated Edge profile for each context
Edge profiles are the simplest built-in way to separate work and personal browsing while you use the same Windows login. Use the work or school Microsoft account only in the work profile and your personal Microsoft account only in the personal profile. This keeps each account’s browser environment distinct, provided you also review the sync settings in both profiles.
Set up the first profile
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select the Profile icon in the upper-right corner.
- Select Set up a new profile.
- Choose Personal or Work or school, depending on the context for this window.
- Choose Sign in to sync data if you want the profile connected to that account’s synced Edge data. Choose Start without your data if you want a clean profile without bringing in existing synced data.
- Select Confirm and start browsing. Edge opens the profile in a separate window.
Microsoft documents this flow in Sign in and create multiple profiles in Microsoft Edge. The exact wording or availability of options can vary with your installed Edge version.
Repeat the process for the other context
Open the Profile menu again and create the second profile. Select Personal for your private browsing environment and Work or school for the organization-managed environment, or use the choices in the way that matches your accounts.

Give each profile a recognizable name or theme when those controls are available in your version of Edge. A clear name such as “Work” or “Personal,” combined with a visibly different profile appearance, makes it harder to enter a password, upload a file or send mail from the wrong account.
Decide which profile should be created first
The order does not change how the profiles work. Start with the context you use most often, or create the work profile first if your organization requires a particular sign-in or sync configuration. The important step is to assign only the intended identity to each profile and to verify the result before importing or creating browser data.
If you are setting up a profile on a shared or managed PC, pause at every sign-in prompt. A personal account should not be added to a work profile merely because Edge offers it, and a work account should not be added to a personal profile for convenience. Separate profiles are most useful when the identity, data and daily tasks in each one remain consistent.

Microsoft describes profiles as separate browser environments. In practical terms, the profile you select determines which browser data and preferences are active in that Edge window.
- Settings and preferences
- Favorites (bookmarks)
- Extensions
- Themes and other appearance choices
- Account-specific data that you choose to synchronize
Because the new profile opens in a separate Edge window, the window itself is a useful visual boundary. Check the Profile icon before entering account-sensitive information, opening a work document or submitting a form.
Keep identities matched to profiles
Use one identity consistently in each profile: the work or school Microsoft account in the work profile, and the personal Microsoft account in the personal profile. Microsoft states that personal and work or school accounts cannot be merged. Keeping them assigned to different profiles avoids trying to make two distinct account systems behave as one.
This arrangement also makes ordinary browser choices easier to understand. A work favorite, extension or open-tab set belongs in the work context; a personal favorite or personal extension belongs in the personal context. If something appears in the wrong window, first check the active profile and then check that profile’s sync settings before assuming Edge has combined the profiles.
Use visual and window cues deliberately
Names and themes are not security controls, but they are useful error-prevention tools. Give the windows short, unmistakable labels and choose different appearances when your Edge version offers those controls. Keep the work and personal windows in predictable places on the taskbar only as a convenience, not as your sole check. The profile name beside the Profile icon is the more reliable cue when a message, upload or password entry matters.
Control sync separately in each profile
Signing in is not the same as enabling every kind of sync. When sync is enabled for an account, Edge can synchronize supported categories across devices signed in with that account. Depending on the Edge version and account, those categories can include favorites, passwords, history, extensions, settings, open tabs, autofill entries and payment information.

A practical sync plan

Passwords, history, autofill and payment information deserve particular attention because they can be sensitive. Do not assume that creating a second profile automatically prevents data from being synchronized: inspect the Sync page in both profiles and confirm the toggles match your intended boundary.
What “Start without your data” changes
During setup, Start without your data is the choice for beginning without bringing existing synced data into the new profile. It is useful when you want a clean environment or when the account’s existing favorites, passwords, history, extensions, settings, open tabs, autofill or payment information should not appear in the new window. You can still decide later how that profile should be configured, subject to the account and device policies that apply.
Sign in to sync data, by contrast, connects the profile to the selected account’s supported Edge data. That can be convenient when the same work or personal environment is needed on more than one device, but it also means you should inspect the available categories rather than accepting every toggle automatically.
Review sync after changes
Revisit Settings > Profiles > Sync after changing an account, moving to another device or noticing unexpected favorites or extensions. The available controls and labels can vary by Edge version, so read the categories shown in your installation. Review both profiles independently; changing a setting in one does not mean the other profile has the same selection.
Switch between work and personal Edge windows
- Select the Profile icon in the upper-right corner of the current Edge window.
- Select the profile you need.
- Edge opens that profile in a new window.
- Before continuing, verify the profile name or indicator in the new window.
Switching through the Profile menu is different from signing out of Windows. It changes the Edge environment while leaving the rest of your Windows session in place. Keep the two windows visibly distinct, and close or minimize the one you are not using when a task involves confidential information.

A quick pre-action check
- Read the profile name beside the Profile icon.
- Check that the address, account avatar or other identity cue belongs to the intended context.
- Confirm that you are using the expected favorites and extensions before opening a sensitive site.
- After switching windows, recheck the profile rather than relying on the window’s position on the taskbar.
These habits reduce accidental cross-account actions, but they are operational safeguards, not a promise of security isolation.
Switching is not merging
Choosing another profile opens that profile in another Edge window; it does not combine the two profiles’ favorites, passwords or settings. If a task requires both contexts, keep the windows separate and verify the profile before each account-sensitive action. Avoid copying credentials, payment details or autofill information between contexts unless your organization’s rules and your own privacy requirements clearly allow it.
Edge profiles versus separate Windows user accounts
Choose the boundary that matches what you are trying to separate. Edge profiles separate browser contexts inside one Windows session. Separate Windows user accounts create a wider boundary around user files, sign-in credentials, browser favorites and desktop settings.

- You need work and personal files kept in different Windows user folders.
- You want desktop settings and sign-in credentials separated, not just browser data.
- Other applications besides Edge must use different identities.
- You regularly handle organization-controlled data and want a distinct Windows session.
A Windows account does not combine the underlying Microsoft identities. It gives each identity its own Windows context instead. Switching users is therefore a broader change than selecting another Edge profile: it affects the Windows session and the applications running in it, not just the browser window.

When two Edge profiles are enough
Profiles are usually the practical choice when one person alternates between work websites and personal websites, wants separate favorites and extensions, and does not need separate Windows folders or desktop settings. They avoid the interruption of changing Windows sessions while still providing a visible browser-level distinction. Use the smallest boundary that meets the requirement, then move to separate Windows users if browser-only separation proves insufficient.
Understand Microsoft account and OneDrive limits
Microsoft says personal Microsoft accounts and work or school Microsoft accounts cannot be merged. Treat them as separate identities even when they are used on the same PC and in different Edge profiles.
Microsoft also says OneDrive storage remains separate when both account types are used on a PC. A work profile therefore does not turn a personal OneDrive into a work storage location, and a personal profile does not merge the organization’s OneDrive storage with it. Separate Edge profiles help you select the intended identity, but they do not change Microsoft’s underlying account or storage rules.
What profiles do not guarantee
The Microsoft help pages explain how profiles, sync and Windows accounts work; they do not describe Edge profiles as a security boundary. A second profile should not be presented as a way to hide browsing from an employer, defeat device monitoring or override organization policy.
On an employer-managed Windows device, the organization may control which accounts, extensions, sync categories or services are allowed. Follow the organization’s rules and confirm permitted settings with the device administrator. If a work policy disables a control, creating a personal profile does not give you authority to bypass it.
Use the right expectation
- Expected: separate everyday browser data and visual contexts in Edge.
- Not established: guaranteed privacy from an employer or administrator.
- Not established: immunity from device management, monitoring or policy enforcement.
- Still required: careful account selection, sync review and compliance with organization rules.
If privacy from an employer is the concern, the relevant answer comes from the organization’s device and account policy, not from the number of Edge profiles. Ask the administrator which accounts, sync categories and extensions are permitted. Keep personal activity on an approved personal device when policy or privacy requirements call for that arrangement.

A reliable setup checklist
- Create the work or school profile from the Edge Profile menu.
- Choose whether to sign in and sync or start without existing data.
- Create the personal profile using the same process.
- Assign each Microsoft identity to only its intended profile.
- Give the windows recognizable names or themes when available.
- Open Settings > Profiles > Sync in each profile.
- Review sensitive categories, including passwords, history, autofill and payment information.
- Open both windows and verify the Profile indicator before entering account-sensitive data.
- If browser separation is insufficient, move to separate Windows user accounts for a broader boundary.

Verify the result with low-risk checks
After setup, open a harmless page or a non-sensitive favorite in each window and confirm that the expected profile name, theme and account indicator appear. Check that each profile shows the intended extensions and favorites. Then inspect Sync in both profiles. This short verification catches a wrong-account sign-in before passwords, payment information or work documents are involved.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Signing into the wrong profile
If a work account is added to the personal profile, stop and verify which profile is active before continuing. Use the Profile menu to open the intended profile, then keep the identities assigned consistently rather than relying on memory.
Assuming a new profile is empty after signing in
Choosing Sign in to sync data can bring supported data from that account. If you want no existing synced data in the new environment, choose Start without your data during setup instead.

Forgetting that sync can include sensitive information
Profile separation does not replace a review of Sync settings. Check the available toggles in both profiles because labels and controls can change between Edge versions.
Using profiles when the real requirement is file separation
Edge profiles do not provide the same scope as separate Windows users. If files, desktop settings and credentials must be separated, use the broader Windows-account approach described by Microsoft rather than expecting a browser profile to cover the whole PC.
Trusting the taskbar position instead of the profile indicator
Window placement is easy to change and does not identify the signed-in account. Before sending mail, uploading a document, entering a password or making a payment, read the profile name and inspect the account cue in the active window.
Assuming account types can be combined later
Personal and work or school Microsoft accounts remain separate. Creating profiles is a way to keep their browser contexts organized, not a method for merging their identities or OneDrive storage.
Ignoring an organization’s settings
A managed device may restrict accounts, extensions, sync categories or related services. If an option is unavailable or disabled, do not attempt to work around the policy with another profile. Ask the device administrator what configuration is approved.

Are Edge profiles a security boundary from my employer?
