The most reliable way to keep a LEGO Marvel display set dust-free for longer is to place it in a well-fitting transparent case or closed cabinet, then control dust in the surrounding room. No enclosure guarantees a permanently dust-free model, so plan for occasional, gentle cleaning. Measure the assembled set—including every protruding element—before buying a case, and never wash a built model as one piece.
Start with a covered display
Dust settles when airborne particles land on exposed surfaces. A transparent cover, display case, or cabinet door creates a physical barrier and reduces the amount of dust that reaches the model. LEGO describes its Play and Display Case as helping keep models free from dust, while the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) recommends well-sealed enclosures and dust covers to reduce dust deposition. Neither source gives a percentage reduction or promises that a model will remain completely dust-free.
For a Marvel set that will stay assembled, a case is usually more effective and less risky than frequent handling. Every cleaning session creates a chance of pulling off a small attachment, bending a thin element, or scuffing a transparent part. The goal is to make cleaning occasional rather than eliminate it entirely.
Choose the most protective enclosure available
- Closed display cabinet: Best when you have several sets or a large model. Doors should close evenly, and gaps should be as small as practical.
- Purpose-built transparent case: Useful for a single model when its interior clearance matches the set. A stable base and a cover that can be removed without touching the build are important.
- Dust cover on open shelving: Better than leaving the model uncovered, but protection depends on how completely the cover meets the shelf and how often it is opened.
Do not treat a case as a sealed clean room. Dust can enter through seams, during access, or when the door is opened. A cover that is difficult to remove may discourage necessary inspection, while one that fits loosely provides less protection.

Measure the Marvel set before buying a case
Measure the fully assembled model in its intended pose. Record the greatest width, depth, and height, including wings, weapons, antennae, capes, minifigures, stands, and any other element that projects beyond the main body. Compare those measurements with the case’s usable interior dimensions, not its advertised outside dimensions.
- Place the finished model on a level surface.
- Measure from the farthest left point to the farthest right point.
- Measure from the frontmost point to the rearmost point.
- Measure from the supporting surface to the highest point.
- Add clearance above and around the model so the cover cannot press against pieces when installed.
- Check the opening size as well as the interior volume; a case can have enough internal space but an opening too small for the assembled set.
Recheck the measurements if you change the pose, add a vehicle, or place minifigures on raised stands. A model that fits diagonally may still touch the cover when the case is closed.
What is known about LEGO Play and Display Case – Blue (5006157)
LEGO’s US product listing described this as a two-level case with six gray baseplates, a transparent cover, and a LEGO design backdrop. The listed outside dimensions were more than 7.5 inches high, 15.5 inches wide, and 5.5 inches deep. The listing did not state the usable internal dimensions, so those outside measurements cannot establish that the case fits any particular Marvel set.

Compare cases by the factors that affect dust control

No independent test in the available evidence measured dust reduction for one case against another. Treat qualitative claims such as “keeps dust off” as a description of the barrier, not as a laboratory result.
Reduce dust around the display
An enclosure works better when the room contributes less dust. AMNH conservation guidance identifies airborne contaminants such as soot and dust as abrasive particulates and recommends clean filtered HVAC air, closed cabinet doors, and dust covers on open shelving. This is general collection-care guidance, not a LEGO-specific performance test, but the same environmental controls reduce the amount of material available to settle on a model.
Control nearby sources
- Keep the display away from open windows, exterior doors, cooking areas, fireplaces, and places where people remove coats or shoes.
- Do not place it directly beside a supply vent or fan that blows air across the model. Air movement can carry more particles onto exposed surfaces.
- Vacuum or damp-dust the shelf and nearby floor regularly so settled dust is not repeatedly stirred into the air.
- Keep cabinet doors closed except when accessing the model.
- If the room uses forced-air heating or cooling, maintain its filters according to the system manufacturer’s schedule.
These steps do not make the room particle-free. They simply reduce the load on the case and lengthen the interval between careful cleanings.
Dust an assembled model with minimal handling
LEGO’s cited cleaning guidance addresses individual elements and does not prescribe a method for dusting an assembled display model. If a light layer has settled on a stable build, a very gentle pass with a clean, appropriate soft tool can be practical handling advice, not an official LEGO procedure. Work slowly, support delicate sections, and avoid pulling on small attachments.

- Move the model only if necessary. If it is in a case, clean the cover and surrounding surfaces first.
- Inspect the build for loose, leaning, or unusually thin sections before touching it.
- Support a fragile area with one hand while using the other hand for a light pass over nearby surfaces.
- Work from higher surfaces downward so loosened dust does not settle on areas you have already treated.
- Stop if a part shifts, a connection flexes, or a transparent element begins to cloud from rubbing.
- Check the base, underside, and behind large elements only when you can reach them without forcing the model.
Do not use the assembled-model procedure as a substitute for washing. Water trapped between connected elements can be difficult to remove, and manipulating a large build under running water increases the chance of separation.
For a deeper clean, take the elements apart
LEGO Education’s Hygiene Guidelines (©2020) instruct users to take elements apart before cleaning. It specifies hand-cleaning with a soft cloth or sponge, soap, and water no hotter than 104°F (40°C). These instructions are written for LEGO elements and education settings; they do not specifically authorize washing an assembled display model.
- Photograph the build. Take several views before disassembly, including the underside and any areas hidden by larger sections.
- Separate manageable sections. Remove large modules first and place them on a clean, soft work surface.
- Sort delicate elements. Set aside transparent parts, decorated pieces, stickers, printed elements, capes, and pieces with attached accessories for especially gentle handling.
- Prepare lukewarm water. Keep the water at or below 104°F (40°C). Use a soft cloth or sponge and mild soap; do not add disinfectants, bleach, solvents, or polish.
- Clean by hand. Wash elements without aggressive scrubbing, then rinse away soap with clean water.
- Air-dry naturally. Spread pieces on a clean towel in a ventilated area and allow them to dry fully before rebuilding. Do not use an oven, microwave, or hair dryer.
- Rebuild from your photographs or instructions. Confirm that every piece is dry before reconnecting parts.
The same LEGO guidance says not to expose elements to temperatures above 140°F (60°C). It also warns that alcohol-based disinfectants and bleach can damage decorations, haze transparent elements, or cause cracks and crazing. Those warnings are especially relevant to display sets with printed or transparent parts.

Handle transparent and projecting pieces carefully
Dust tends to be most visible on broad, dark, glossy, or transparent surfaces. Projecting elements also catch dust but are easier to snag during cleaning. Before touching a model, identify anything that extends beyond the main structure and plan a path around it.

- Never drag a cloth across a thin projection if the cloth can catch its edge.
- Do not use the top of a transparent cover as a storage surface; vibration or falling objects can transmit force to the model.
- Keep the case stable and level so tall sections are not repeatedly stressed by movement.
- When opening a case, hold the cover by its frame or designated handle rather than resting it against the model.
If a transparent piece appears hazy after cleaning, stop using the product or method that caused it. LEGO’s warning about alcohol and bleach concerns this type of damage; do not attempt to restore a damaged element with household polish.
Use a simple inspection and cleaning schedule
A fixed schedule is less useful than a schedule based on the enclosure, room, and visible dust load. Inspect the case and model under normal room lighting, and use a closer look only when needed. Frequent opening exposes the model to more airborne dust.
At each routine inspection
- Look for dust on the outside of the cover, around seams, and on the shelf below.
- Check whether the cover still closes fully and whether the base has shifted.
- Look for leaning sections or loose attachments before any cleaning.
- Clean the case exterior and nearby shelf first, using a method suitable for that surface.
When the model needs attention
If dust is light and the build is stable, use the cautious assembled-model approach described above. If dust is heavy, sticky, or mixed with grime, plan a controlled disassembly and hand-clean the elements. Do not escalate from light dusting to spraying liquids onto a built model.

Dust returns quickly after cleaning
Check whether the case has large gaps, sits beside an air vent, or is opened frequently. Clean the shelf and floor around it, inspect the room’s HVAC filter, and move the display away from direct airflow if possible.
The model touches the case
Remove pressure immediately. Re-measure the set in its actual pose and compare it with the case’s usable interior dimensions. Do not force the cover closed or trim, bend, or remove elements merely to make the case fit.

The case is difficult to open safely
Reposition the model or choose an enclosure with a larger opening. An enclosure that protects against dust but repeatedly strikes the build during access can create more damage than occasional careful cleaning.
A section becomes loose during dusting
Stop moving that section. Photograph its position, set aside any detached elements, and rebuild only after the model is on a stable surface. For a complex set, use the original instructions rather than guessing at hidden connections.

Open the enclosure away from the model if the design permits, clean the cover separately, and let it dry completely before reinstalling it. If the cover cannot be removed without contacting the build, do not force it; the case may be unsuitable for that model.
A practical setup for a Marvel display
- Select the final display location away from windows, doors, cooking areas, and direct vents.
- Measure the assembled Marvel set at its widest, deepest, and tallest points, including all projections.
- Choose a transparent case or cabinet whose usable interior and opening exceed those measurements.
- Place the model on a stable, level base and confirm that the cover closes without contact.
- Keep the enclosure closed except during inspection or cleaning.
- Control dust on the surrounding shelf, floor, and HVAC system rather than relying on the case alone.
- Inspect periodically and use only gentle handling for an assembled model.
- For heavy cleaning, document the build, disassemble it, hand-clean with soap and water no hotter than 104°F (40°C), rinse, and air-dry naturally.
This approach protects the model without promising an impossible zero-dust environment. The case limits exposure, the room controls reduce incoming particles, and the cleaning method limits the handling and chemical risks that matter most to a long-term display.
