Keep digital money safe by protecting two separate control points: the wallet keys that authorize transactions and the online accounts that may provide access to a custodian, exchange, email address, or recovery service. Use a small, connected wallet for routine spending, keep longer-term holdings offline when you can manage the backups, secure every related account with unique credentials and strong multifactor authentication, and verify every transaction before signing it.
The mechanics below use Bitcoin examples because the cited wallet guidance is Bitcoin-specific. The security principles—phishing-resistant login protection, software updates, offline backups, and skepticism toward urgent support requests—also apply to many other digital-money products, but each token, wallet format, exchange, and bank service can have different recovery rules.
Start with the right model: a wallet controls keys
A wallet does not contain coins. For Bitcoin, the blockchain records balances and transactions; a wallet application manages the private keys that authorize spending. Whoever controls the necessary keys can generally move the funds. Bitcoin.org explains this distinction in its Bitcoin FAQ.

A self-custody wallet leaves key protection and backup entirely with you. A custodial account keeps the keys under a provider’s control, so you do not have to operate the wallet yourself, but you depend on that provider’s security, availability, policies, and solvency. Neither arrangement is automatically safe or unsafe; they fail in different ways.

| Arrangement | Who controls spending keys? | Convenience | Main responsibilities and failure modes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custodial account | The service controls them for you. | Usually easiest for buying, selling, and account-based access. | Protect the login, email, MFA, and withdrawal settings; funds can be affected by account takeover, service outages, freezes, or provider insolvency. |
| Self-custody hot wallet | You control them on an internet-connected phone or computer. | Fast access for regular payments. | Protect the device, wallet software, keys, and backup; malware, phishing, theft, and user mistakes are your responsibility. |
| Self-custody cold storage | You control them while the signing keys remain offline. | Less convenient for frequent spending. | Protect the offline device or media, recovery materials, setup process, and transaction details; loss, damage, or an incomplete backup can make funds inaccessible. |
Think of custody and storage as two different decisions. A custodial account answers who operates the keys. Hot or cold storage answers how exposed those keys are to an internet-connected environment. Keeping a small spending balance online while storing savings offline is a common risk-reduction pattern, not a universal rule.
Hot, cold, and hardware storage: what changes
Hot wallets
A hot wallet runs on a connected phone, tablet, or computer. It is practical when you need to scan a payment request, send a small amount, or check a balance frequently. The same connectivity creates more opportunities for malicious applications, browser attacks, stolen sessions, clipboard-changing malware, and physical theft. Bitcoin.org recommends keeping only small amounts on everyday devices; see Securing your wallet.
Cold storage
Cold storage keeps the signing keys offline until you intentionally authorize a transaction. A hardware wallet is one implementation, but “offline” does not mean risk-free. A fraudulent device, compromised setup computer, malicious transaction, exposed recovery phrase, forgotten passphrase, or incorrect address can still defeat the protection. Offline storage also shifts more work to you: you must preserve the device, its instructions, and a usable backup.
Choose based on use, not a universal ranking
| Need | Usually fits | Why | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small, frequent payments | Hot self-custody wallet | Quick access and straightforward signing. | Limit the balance and keep the phone or computer updated. |
| Long-term holdings with infrequent spending | Cold self-custody arrangement | Reduces exposure of signing keys to online attacks. | Backups, passphrases, device authenticity, and recovery testing become critical. |
| Convenience with limited key-management experience | Carefully selected custodial account | The provider handles key operations and often account recovery. | You still need strong MFA, a secure email account, and a plan for provider outages or restrictions. |
Do not transfer a meaningful amount merely because a device is marketed as secure. First understand how it creates the recovery material, how you confirm transactions on its screen, and how you restore the wallet if the device fails.
Set up a wallet without creating a new weakness
- Define the wallet’s job. Decide whether it is for daily spending, a temporary transfer, or savings. A wallet holding a small spending amount can reasonably prioritize convenience; a savings wallet needs stronger separation from routine devices and accounts.
- Read the official recovery documentation before funding. Confirm whether the wallet uses a recovery phrase, requires a separate passphrase, needs periodic backups, or has wallet-specific settings that must be preserved. Bitcoin.org notes that backup requirements differ between wallets, even though many modern deterministic wallets can be restored from one phrase.
- Obtain software or hardware from an authentic source. Use the maker’s official website or an authorized seller, check the address independently, and avoid links delivered by unsolicited messages. Impostor applications and support pages can capture keys before you ever make a payment.
- Initialize in private. Generate the recovery material yourself during setup. Never accept a device that arrives with a pre-generated phrase, and never let another person choose or view it. For a hardware wallet, follow the on-device prompts rather than copying a phrase from a web page.
- Record the recovery material offline. Write the words exactly as displayed and keep them away from cameras, cloud drives, email, chat, notes synchronized across devices, and password-reset accounts. Anyone who obtains the phrase may control the funds.
- Set local protections. Use the wallet’s PIN or device lock and understand what an additional passphrase does. A passphrase can create another recovery dependency: a perfect phrase backup is not enough if the required passphrase is forgotten.
- Learn and test restoration before depositing significant funds. Use the wallet’s documented restore process with no valuable balance, or verify the process in another safe way recommended by the maker. Confirm that the restored wallet shows the expected accounts and addresses. Do not improvise with third-party “recovery” tools.
- Fund gradually. Send a small test amount, confirm that the receiving address is correct, and verify that it arrives before moving a larger balance. Keep the hot-wallet amount within what you could afford to lose from a single device or transaction error.
Secure the accounts around your money
Wallet keys are only one control point. A custodial account, email inbox, password manager, device account, and recovery channel can each be used to reset access or approve withdrawals. CISA defines multifactor authentication (MFA) as using at least two different types of authenticators—something you know, have, or are. Its October 2022 guidance says, “MFA makes it more difficult for cyber threat actors to gain access to networks and information systems if passwords or personal identification numbers (PINs) are compromised through phishing attacks or other means.” Read the CISA Implementing Phishing-Resistant MFA fact sheet.

Use unique passwords and protect the password manager
Give every exchange, wallet-related account, email account, and financial service a different, long, random password. A password manager can generate and store those credentials, but its master password, recovery method, and unlocked devices become high-value targets. Enable the strongest MFA the manager offers and keep its recovery codes offline in a separate secure place. CISA’s 2025 Four Cybersecurity Essentials guidance recommends long, random, unique passwords and password managers; its 16-character policy example is for state, local, tribal, and territorial government organizations, not a universal personal threshold.
Prefer phishing-resistant MFA
| Method | Phishing resistance | Practical considerations |
|---|---|---|
| FIDO/WebAuthn security key or passkey | Strongest among the commonly available options because authentication is bound to the legitimate site. | Keep a spare authenticator or documented recovery route; losing every authenticator can lock you out. |
| Authenticator application code | Better than a password alone, but a real-time phishing site may relay the code. | Protect the phone and preserve the service’s migration or recovery codes. |
| Push approval | Depends on implementation and user vigilance; attackers can bombard you with prompts. | Reject unexpected prompts and report repeated attempts. |
| SMS or voice code | Weaker against SIM swaps, account takeover at the carrier, and SS7-related attacks. | Use only when stronger choices are unavailable, and add carrier account protections. |
Turn on MFA for the custodial account, primary email, password manager, and device account. Never approve an unexpected prompt merely to make it stop. If a service offers withdrawal-address locks, transaction notifications, login alerts, or a delay before changing security settings, enable the controls that fit your routine.
Protect the email account and devices
An attacker who controls the email used for password resets may bypass otherwise good account hygiene. Give that inbox a unique password and strong MFA, review forwarding rules, remove unknown sessions, and keep recovery addresses and phone numbers current. Install operating-system and wallet updates promptly; Bitcoin.org notes that updates can include security fixes. Download updates through the wallet’s official channel rather than an advertisement or support message.
Build a recovery plan that survives device loss
What a recovery phrase is
A recovery phrase, also called a seed phrase, is a sequence of words from which a wallet can regenerate its keys. It is not a customer-service password. Anyone who sees it may be able to access the wallet, and no legitimate support representative needs it. Never type it into a website, send it to a chat, photograph it, or store it in ordinary cloud storage.
Make backups durable and independent
- Keep the original recovery material offline and protected from casual access, theft, fire, water, and loss.
- Avoid a single physical location when the amount and circumstances justify more than one secure location. Multiple copies reduce the chance that one event destroys the only backup, but every copy also creates another theft target.
- Use durable media appropriate to the wallet’s instructions. Do not alter word order, spelling, or punctuation conventions that the wallet requires.
- Record the wallet’s official restore steps, account type, derivation or network settings when the documentation says they matter, and any additional passphrase needed to recreate the expected account.
- Keep recovery instructions available to a trusted person for an emergency or estate situation without casually revealing the phrase itself. Bitcoin.org discusses both secure backups and planning for family or peers who may need to locate wallet information.
Understand the common loss scenarios
| What happened | Likely result | Useful response |
|---|---|---|
| Phone or computer was lost, but the correct backup remains private. | The wallet may be restorable on a replacement device. | Obtain the official wallet software, restore in a private environment, and verify addresses before using the wallet. |
| The recovery phrase was photographed, uploaded, or disclosed. | Assume the wallet is compromised; an attacker may spend without warning. | If you still control the wallet, move funds to a newly generated wallet with a newly recorded backup, then investigate the exposure. |
| The phrase is intact but an additional passphrase is forgotten. | The expected account may not be recoverable from the phrase alone. | Search your securely documented recovery plan; do not trust anyone promising guaranteed recovery. |
| The only backup was destroyed or lost. | Funds may be permanently inaccessible, depending on the wallet design. | There is no universal override. Avoid experimenting with random software or sharing partial phrases online. |
Check every transaction and recognize scams
Bitcoin transactions are generally irreversible. A convincing payment screen does not protect you from sending to the wrong address, and a mistaken transfer may not be recoverable. Bitcoin.org’s Avoid Scams guide describes fake support, address poisoning, malware that changes copied addresses, QR-code phishing, fraudulent hardware, investment schemes, and paid “recovery” offers.

Use a pre-send checklist
- Identify the recipient through a channel you already trust. Do not use contact details supplied by an unexpected message.
- Compare the full receiving address, not only its first or last characters. If you copied it, paste it into a neutral text field and compare again because malware can replace clipboard contents.
- Read the wallet’s transaction screen, including the asset, network, amount, destination, and fee. A QR code is an input format, not proof that the request is legitimate.
- For a new recipient or large transfer, send a small test amount when practical and confirm it through an independent channel.
- Reject urgency, secrecy, guaranteed returns, remote-access requests, and instructions to disable security controls. Pause rather than letting a caller or chat agent rush the decision.
Spot fake support and recovery services
Legitimate wallet or exchange support will not ask for your recovery phrase or private key. Treat requests to “verify” a wallet, connect through remote-control software, pay an upfront fee to unlock funds, or provide a screenshot of your phrase as an attempted theft. Find support contacts by typing the official address yourself or using documentation you already saved, not by following a stranger’s link. Bitcoin.org states that no legitimate firm offers guaranteed cryptocurrency recovery.

Buy and initialize hardware carefully
Purchase hardware only from the maker or an authorized reseller, inspect packaging and device prompts, and generate the seed during setup. Never use a phrase printed on a card or supplied by a seller. Before approving a transaction, read the destination and amount on the trusted device’s own display; a compromised computer can show one address while requesting another.

If you suspect an account takeover
- From a clean, trusted device, change the affected password and revoke unknown sessions, API keys, and app connections.
- Secure the email account and password manager that could reset the account. Change their credentials and MFA if exposure is possible.
- Contact the service through independently verified official support channels and ask about withdrawals, holds, and account-preservation procedures.
- Preserve evidence such as alert messages, timestamps, destination addresses, and device details. Do not forward your recovery phrase or install remote-access software for an alleged investigation.
If a self-custody phrase may be exposed
Assume the phrase is no longer secret. If you can still access the wallet, create a new wallet with a new backup in a clean environment and transfer remaining funds after checking every destination. Do not wait for an attacker to prove access. If the transfer itself is suspicious, stop signing additional transactions and seek help from a reputable security professional without disclosing the phrase.
If you already sent money to a scammer
Stop communicating with the scammer and do not pay a second “recovery” fee. Record the transaction ID, addresses, messages, and payment details; report the incident to the relevant service and appropriate law-enforcement or consumer-protection authority in your jurisdiction. Blockchain transfers are usually not reversible, so reporting may document the fraud rather than return the funds.
Match the plan to your responsibilities
For routine spending
Use a hot wallet only for an amount appropriate to everyday use. Keep the phone or computer locked, updated, and free of untrusted applications. Separate the spending wallet from savings so one compromised device does not expose everything.

For savings
Use an offline arrangement only if you can maintain accurate backups and follow the restore procedure. Store recovery materials so one burglary or environmental disaster does not destroy every copy, while limiting who can discover them. Rehearse the recovery process before the wallet holds a large balance.
For custodial use
Evaluate the provider’s security controls, withdrawal policies, jurisdiction, and operational reliability rather than assuming a recognizable interface is protection. Use a unique password, phishing-resistant MFA where offered, a hardened email account, login and withdrawal alerts, and a documented plan for account recovery. Keep only the amount that fits your tolerance for provider dependence.
Review the system instead of trusting one device
Security degrades when a backup becomes unreadable, an old phone remains signed in, an authenticator is lost, or a wallet update is ignored. At a regular interval that fits your use, confirm that:
- Wallet and operating-system software came from official sources and are current.
- Recovery materials are still legible, private, and stored where your plan says they are.
- You know whether an additional passphrase, network choice, or wallet setting is required for restoration.
- Account sessions, forwarding rules, withdrawal addresses, API keys, and MFA devices are familiar.
- A trusted person could locate your written emergency instructions without receiving the secret phrase through an insecure channel.
No single control eliminates every failure mode. The practical objective is to separate spending from savings, reduce online exposure where you can handle the added recovery duty, make account takeover harder, and insert deliberate verification before an irreversible action.
