Consistency comes from separating what must stay the same from what is allowed to change. Create a reusable character identity brief and reference image, keep a separate style reference for medium, texture, lighting, and palette, lock the model version and settings, and revise one variable at a time. Describe light and color literally—source, direction, softness, temperature, shadows, and named colors—then compare every result against a baseline. References improve continuity, but they do not guarantee pixel-perfect reproduction.
What “consistent” should mean in an image series
Decide your continuity target before writing prompts. A storybook may require the same face, hair, proportions, clothing colors, illustration medium, and overall palette while allowing different poses and locations. A product sequence may require an identical object and logo placement, with only the background changing. A campaign might permit wardrobe changes but demand the same lens feel, light direction, and color grade.
Separate fixed attributes from variable ones in writing. Fixed attributes are the character’s facial structure, hair pattern, body proportions, signature marks, recurring accessories, and stable color choices. Variable attributes are action, pose, camera distance, setting, season, and expression. This distinction prevents a prompt from accidentally asking the model to preserve everything while also changing the scene.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy characters, lighting, and color drift
Image generators produce a new interpretation for each request. A text description that says “the same character” is less specific than a visible reference plus a list of measurable traits. Lighting and color drift for a similar reason: broad words such as “cinematic,” “beautiful,” or “moody” leave the model many valid interpretations. A new composition can also change apparent skin tone, shadow shape, and clothing color even when the words remain identical.

OpenAI’s guidance recommends collecting representative prompts, reference images, model information, request settings, and results so a baseline can be reproduced (OpenAI Developers, Image prompting). Treat that record as part of the asset, not as optional production paperwork.
Build a character identity anchor
Select a useful reference image
Choose one clear image in which the identifying features are visible. Use an unobstructed face, readable hair silhouette, full or three-quarter body view, and the recurring outfit or accessories. Avoid a dramatic crop, heavy shadow across the face, motion blur, or a pose that hides proportions. If you need both a face and full-body view, make a compact reference set and explain the role of each image instead of uploading many loosely related pictures.
Write an identity sheet
Keep the sheet short enough to paste into every prompt. Record the traits that distinguish the subject from a generic person:
- Face: age range, face shape, eye shape and color, eyebrows, nose, mouth, freckles, scars, or other stable marks.
- Hair: color, length, texture, parting, fringe, and the silhouette seen from a distance.
- Proportions: approximate height, build, shoulder width, and any deliberately stylized proportions.
- Wardrobe: garment shapes, materials, recurring colors, patterns, fasteners, and footwear.
- Accessories: glasses, jewelry, bags, tools, badges, or other continuity-critical items.
- Invariants: a final sentence listing what must not change in this series.
OpenAI recommends establishing appearance, proportions, outfit, and tone, then reusing the generated character image while repeating appearance constraints in later scenes (OpenAI Developers, Image prompting). Repetition is useful here: it gives the model the same high-priority facts each time.

Make a style anchor separately
A style anchor describes how the image is rendered, not who appears in it. Specify medium (for example, gouache, ink, 3D clay, or photographic), line quality, surface texture, contrast, lens or illustration treatment, and the recurring palette. Keep the character reference and style reference conceptually separate so you can change a location without changing the subject—or update the look without redesigning the character.
Lock the tool, model version, and settings
Do not mix model versions casually within one series. Record the service, model or version, aspect ratio, quality settings, reference files, prompt text, and any reference-weight parameters used for the baseline. A feature name can mean different things in different versions, and a parameter range may change.
| Workflow element | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Model | Exact model/version and date used | Reference behavior and supported controls can change between versions. |
| References | File names, order, crop, and role of each image | Later prompts can reproduce the same subject/style assignment. |
| Prompt | Stable identity and style blocks plus the scene-specific text | You can change one block without rewriting the whole request. |
| Settings | Aspect ratio, quality, stylization, image weight, style weight, seed, and edit mask | Small setting changes can alter composition and color. |
| Output | Selected image, rejected variants, and notes about drift | The approved baseline becomes a visual acceptance test. |
Use references for their intended roles
Subject or character reference
A subject reference tells the model what person or object should appear. Use the current model’s supported subject-reference or editing feature rather than assuming a generic image prompt will preserve identity. In Midjourney, the V7 Omni Reference accepts one reference image and can be combined with Style References; Midjourney states that Omni Reference uses twice the GPU time of regular V7 image generation (Omni Reference). For V8.1 and V8.2, Midjourney directs users to its Edit Model, which supports up to four reference images (Edit Model).
Style reference
A style reference carries visual treatment: color relationships, medium, texture, and lighting. Midjourney defines Style Reference as a way to capture an existing image’s visual vibe and apply it to new creations (Style Reference). Keep the accompanying text prompt simple and avoid style words that conflict with the reference.

Image prompt
An image prompt is inspiration for a new generation, not an exact copy. Midjourney’s documentation says the text prompt should still describe everything you want in the final image (Image Prompts). Use it when composition or visual influence matters, but rely on the supported subject-reference or editing workflow for identity-critical continuity.
Choose a version-aware reference workflow
| Need | Documented option | Constraint to check |
|---|---|---|
| Keep a subject in Midjourney V7 | Omni Reference | One reference image; twice the GPU time of a regular V7 image; compatible with Style References. |
| Combine several references in Midjourney V8.1 or V8.2 | Edit Model | Up to four reference images; if attributes are being mixed, Midjourney recommends combining characters into one reference image. |
| Carry a visual treatment | Style Reference | Documented for version 6 and later; check the current page for applicable style-weight details. |
| Guide a new composition | Image Prompt | It guides a unique generation rather than copying exactly; documented image-weight ranges vary by version. |
Midjourney’s parameter documentation describes --seed as useful for testing and experimenting, not as a guarantee of a preserved character, style, or exact image when prompts, versions, or settings change (Parameter List). Treat a seed as a diagnostic aid, never as your identity system.
Write a stable prompt template
Place reusable constraints before the scene description. Name each reference’s role and identify the details that have priority. Then change only the action, pose, setting, or framing needed for the next image.

The bracketed notation above is a template: replace it with your actual uploaded references. Keep a master version in a text file or production system, then create a copy for each scene. A small, clearly labeled reference set is easier for a model to interpret than a large collection of near-duplicates; OpenAI Academy recommends explaining how multiple images relate to one another (Creating images with ChatGPT).

Describe lighting and color literally
Lighting vocabulary that reduces ambiguity
State the light’s source and position: “large north-facing window, camera left,” “overhead softbox,” or “late-afternoon sun behind the subject.” Add direction, size or softness, color temperature, intensity relationship, and shadow behavior. For example: “soft warm key from camera left, gentle cool fill from the right, low contrast, soft-edged shadows under the chin.” OpenAI Academy gives “soft natural light from a window on the left” as a more reliable instruction than “beautiful lighting,” and emphasizes clarity for light, texture, materials, and layout (Creating images with ChatGPT).
Bound the palette
Name a small set of colors and assign them to objects. “Muted teal walls, cream paper, rust accents, deep-green jacket” is more controllable than “cohesive colors.” State whether colors are matte, glossy, desaturated, or high-chroma, and say what must remain unchanged. If the scene requires colored light, distinguish local object color from illumination: “the jacket remains deep green under warm light; highlights are amber, shadows are slightly violet.”
Describe difficult conditions
Rain, neon, night, fog, and low light can overwhelm a palette. Specify atmosphere, exposure, reflections, and scale: “night street, restrained magenta signage reflected in wet pavement, character’s skin kept neutral, soft blue ambient fill.” Do not rely on a single mood adjective to carry those decisions.

Iterate one issue at a time
- Create a baseline. Generate the first approved character-and-style combination and save the prompt, references, settings, and output.
- Change only the scene variable. For the next image, alter location, action, pose, or framing while leaving identity, style, lighting, and palette blocks intact.
- Diagnose the largest mismatch. Decide whether the face, clothing, palette, light direction, shadow softness, or texture drifted.
- Target the revision. Strengthen only the relevant constraint. A face problem calls for clearer facial traits and the subject reference; a palette problem calls for named colors and lighting language.
- Repeat critical constraints. Re-state the details that must survive the edit instead of assuming the model remembers an earlier turn.
- Approve or reject. Save the accepted result and record the rejected mismatch so you do not reintroduce it later.
OpenAI warns that “Repeated edits can still change details you intended to preserve” (OpenAI Developers, Image prompting). Inspect every output, even when the requested change appears unrelated.

When prompting is not enough: edit and composite
Use an edit or inpainting workflow when the composition is right but one region needs correction. Mask the smallest practical area and state what surrounding pixels must remain unchanged. Even then, inspect hair edges, fingers, garment seams, text, and nearby shadows for collateral changes.
If a region must remain pixel-identical—such as an approved logo, a character’s face, or a legal mark—composite that region from the approved image into the new background or scene. OpenAI’s image-prompting guidance recommends compositing when exact preservation matters rather than relying on prompting alone (OpenAI Developers, Image prompting). This is a production decision, not a failure: generative models are good at variation, while compositing is the dependable method for literal sameness.
Use a contact sheet as a continuity test
Place the approved images in a grid at the same display size. Review the series in a fixed order:
- Identity: eye spacing, jawline, nose, hair silhouette, distinctive marks, and body proportions.
- Wardrobe: garment shape, accessory count and position, pattern scale, and stable colors.
- Lighting: key-light direction, highlight side, shadow softness, contrast, and color temperature.
- Palette: recurring background colors, skin neutrality, accent colors, and saturation.
- Style: line weight, texture, brush or material behavior, grain, and edge treatment.
- Technical framing: aspect ratio, crop, camera distance, and horizon or vanishing-point behavior.
Reject an image that fails a fixed requirement, even if it is attractive on its own. A series is judged side by side, where small changes become obvious.
Troubleshoot the most common drift
| Symptom | Likely cause | Focused correction |
|---|---|---|
| Face looks like a different person | Weak or ambiguous subject reference; too many simultaneous changes | Use the clearest character reference, repeat facial traits, keep the pose or framing simpler, and revise only identity. |
| Hair or accessory disappears | Trait is hidden by pose, lighting, or a crowded prompt | Describe its silhouette and location; choose a view where it is visible; mark it as an invariant. |
| Jacket changes color | Colored light or a broad palette instruction overrides local color | Assign the exact garment color and separate local color from warm or cool illumination. |
| Light comes from the wrong side | “Cinematic” or “dramatic” was used without a source and direction | State source, camera side, softness, fill, temperature, and shadow direction. |
| Medium or texture changes | Style terms conflict with the style reference | Keep the style text concise, remove competing medium words, and use the documented style-reference control. |
| Edit fixes one area but damages another | Generative edits reinterpret surrounding details | Use a smaller mask, restate preservation constraints, compare against the baseline, or composite the approved region. |
| Results vary after a platform update | Model or feature version changed | Freeze the working version where possible and record the new version before continuing the series. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using one reference for everything: a character image does not automatically define the medium, lighting, or palette.
- Changing several variables together: you cannot tell whether a new pose, lens, style word, or color caused the drift.
- Assuming a seed locks identity: the documented purpose of
--seedis testing and experimentation, not a consistency guarantee. - Uploading a pile of references without roles: conflicting faces, outfits, or styles give the model no clear priority.
- Relying on mood words: “dreamy,” “epic,” and “beautiful” do not specify source, direction, temperature, or palette.
- Trusting a successful first edit: inspect every subsequent result because repeated edits can alter supposedly fixed details.
- Trying to prompt pixel identity: use compositing for regions that must be exactly unchanged.
A practical production checklist
- Write the series’ fixed and variable attributes.
- Select a clear character or object anchor and create the identity sheet.
- Select a separate style anchor or write a concrete style block.
- Choose one model version and record its settings and date.
- Label every reference by role and keep the set small.
- Generate and approve a baseline.
- Use a stable prompt template; change one scene variable at a time.
- Describe light by source, direction, softness, temperature, and shadows.
- Name a bounded palette and assign colors to objects.
- Compare outputs in a contact sheet and reject mismatches.
- Use targeted edits for local problems and compositing for pixel-identical regions.
- Archive prompts, references, settings, accepted outputs, and version changes.
What consistency can—and cannot—be promised
References, explicit constraints, version control, and disciplined review make a series more coherent, but no documented feature guarantees an exact character, lighting match, or color-match percentage across changed prompts and model versions. Midjourney’s own image-prompt guidance describes references as guidance toward unique generations rather than exact copies (Image Prompts). Plan a human approval step and reserve compositing for elements where “close” is not acceptable.
