The safest method is gentle hand cleaning: remove dry dirt, test a mild soap solution on a hidden spot, use little lukewarm water with a soft cloth or brush, rinse away residue, and air-dry in shade at room temperature. Avoid bleach, soaking, direct heat, tumble dryers, and machine washing unless the shoe maker’s instructions for your exact model explicitly allow it.
Why canvas sneakers fade, shrink or lose their shape
Canvas is a woven textile, so its dye and fibers can react to water, chemicals, friction and heat. The upper is also attached to rubber, foam, adhesives and structural layers that do not all tolerate the same treatment. A method that seems harmless on one pair can lighten another pair, leave tide marks, weaken fibers or change the fit.
There is no reliable percentage for the likelihood of fading or shrinkage across all canvas shoes. Dye type, fabric finish, construction, age and previous wear all matter. Treat every pair as color-sensitive until a hidden-area test and the manufacturer’s care label show otherwise.

What you need before starting

A special shoe brush is optional. A clean household toothbrush meets the same soft-bristle requirement described in the manufacturer guidance, so buying a dedicated kit is not necessary.
Check the shoes and test for colorfastness
Read the model-specific label first
Look inside the shoe, on its packaging or on the maker’s support page for material and care instructions. “Canvas” may be combined with suede, leather, metallic prints, coated panels or glued decorations. Those additions can require different care. If the label says dry clean only, do not substitute a home wet-cleaning method.
Choose a hidden test area
Mix a very small amount of mild soap into lukewarm water. Dip a cloth, wring it almost dry and touch an inconspicuous area, such as the outside edge of the tongue or a section normally covered by a lace. Leave it for several minutes, then blot with a dry white cloth. Check for dye on the cloth, a lighter patch, bleeding into nearby fabric, roughening or a changed finish after the area dries.
Converse specifically recommends patch-testing because even soap can affect color or material. If the test reacts, stop and consult the manufacturer or a professional cleaner rather than spreading the solution over the upper.
Remove detachable parts
Take out the laces and removable insoles. Cleaning them separately prevents dirt from being trapped underneath and keeps you from flooding the inside of the shoe. Follow the same mild-soap, low-moisture approach for laces. Wipe insoles gently rather than soaking them, then let both dry completely before reassembly.

Step-by-step: the low-risk hand-cleaning method
- Brush off dry dirt. Hold the shoe over a wastebasket or outside and use a soft brush with short, light strokes. Work around the toe, eyelets, sidewalls and outsole edge. Dry soil is easier to remove before it becomes muddy, and this step reduces the scrubbing needed later.
- Prepare a small solution. Add only a little mild soap or detergent to lukewarm water. The mixture should be lightly soapy, not concentrated. Make fresh solution if it becomes visibly dirty.
- Protect the shoe’s interior. Keep the opening upright and avoid pouring liquid into it. If the lining becomes damp, blot it rather than wringing or twisting the shoe.
- Dampen the tool, not the shoe. Dip a cloth or soft brush into the solution and wring or shake off excess water. The canvas should receive a controlled, damp application rather than a soak.
- Work in small sections. Starting at the cleanest area, rub gently in short strokes. Use light pressure and let the damp fibers and soap lift soil. Move around the upper systematically so you do not repeatedly re-wet one spot.
- Give stubborn marks a second gentle pass. Do not compensate for a persistent stain by pressing harder or using a harsher chemical. Reapply a small amount of the tested solution, wait briefly, and brush lightly. Some stains may remain; forcing removal is more likely to damage color or fabric.
- Wipe away soil and soap. Use a separate clean cloth dampened with plain water. Wipe repeatedly and wring the cloth often. Continue until no visible suds or slippery residue remain. Residual detergent can leave a ring or attract more dirt as it dries.
- Clean the rubber separately. The rubber foxing and outsole can tolerate firmer action than the fabric, but keep that action off the canvas. Vans’ guidance says a magic eraser should not be used on fabric uppers. Use a different cloth or brush for rubber so loosened grime is not rubbed back into the weave.
- Blot excess moisture. Press a dry towel against the upper and tongue. Do not twist, wring or bend the shoe sharply, because deformation while wet can become permanent.
- Dry immediately using the method below. Do not leave the cleaned pair in a closed bag or damp pile.
Drying without shrinkage or deformation
Use shade, ventilation and room temperature
Place the shoes in a ventilated, shaded room at normal indoor temperature. Keep them away from radiators, hair dryers, heating vents, fireplaces, hot car interiors, tumble dryers and direct sun. Converse Japan warns that direct sunlight, heaters and dryers can cause deformation, shrinkage, discoloration or other material changes; its care instructions are at Converse Japan’s handling and care page.
Support the shape with loose paper
Loosely fill each shoe with plain paper so the toe and sidewalls do not collapse. Do not pack it tightly: pressure can stretch the wet canvas and change the fit. Replace the paper when it becomes damp. Leave the laces out or loosely threaded until the shoe is fully dry, allowing air to circulate through the opening.

Judge dryness by the inside, not only the surface
Canvas can feel dry while the lining, insole bed or toe area remains damp. Check inside and around the seams before wearing the shoes or storing them. If any area is cool or moist, continue shaded air-drying. A fan can improve ventilation if it blows room-temperature air indirectly; do not use heated air.
Spot cleaning versus a deeper hand clean

Should canvas sneakers go in a washing machine?
There is no universal yes-or-no rule because machine construction, adhesives, trims and instructions differ. The conservative choice for preserving color, fit and structure is hand cleaning.

If you decide to machine-wash despite the maker’s warning, understand that a cold, gentle cycle still exposes the shoe to immersion and agitation. Remove laces and insoles, use no bleach, skip machine drying and stop if the care label prohibits washing. This is a risk decision, not a reliably safe cleaning recipe.

Color-specific precautions
Black and other dyed canvas
Black canvas can show lightened patches quickly. Vans warns that bleach can fade black shoes. Use the mildest tested solution, minimal water and the least brushing that removes the soil. Do not apply a whitening product merely because a mark is visible; a brighter spot can be more noticeable than the original dirt.

White canvas
White fabric makes soil obvious, but chlorine bleach is not a universal solution. Vans warns that chlorine bleach can weaken white canvas or cause yellowing. Converse Japan also warns that bleaching detergents can discolor or fade textiles. A mild, patch-tested soap solution is the safer starting point; accept that an old stain may not disappear completely rather than escalating to a damaging chemical.
Printed, coated or mixed-material panels
Graphics, colored piping, synthetic coatings and adjacent suede or leather may react differently from plain canvas. Keep the solution on the tested material, avoid flooding seams and follow the most restrictive care instruction for the whole shoe. If a decoration begins lifting or a coating becomes tacky, stop cleaning and let the area dry naturally.

Soaking the entire shoe
Problem: Water reaches the lining, insole board and adhesives, increasing drying time and shape risk.
Recovery: Blot rather than wring, remove insoles, open the tongue, insert loose paper and air-dry in shade. Do not add heat to speed it up.

Scrubbing hard to chase a stain
Problem: Aggressive friction can roughen the weave or create a lighter patch.
Recovery: Stop, wipe away residue with a clean damp cloth and let the area dry before judging it. A second light pass with the tested solution is safer than increasing pressure.
Using bleach or a strong whitening product
Problem: Bleach can fade dyed canvas and weaken or yellow white canvas.
Recovery: Rinse or wipe thoroughly with plain water to remove remaining product, then blot and air-dry. Do not combine cleaners. If the fabric has already changed color or texture, further washing is unlikely to restore it.

Recovery: Use a clean, barely damp cloth and several light wipes, changing the cloth area as it picks up suds. Avoid saturating the shoe while rinsing.
Drying in direct sun or on a heater
Problem: Uneven or intense heat can shrink, deform or discolor materials.
Recovery: Move the pair to room-temperature shade, reshape it with loose paper and allow additional time. Do not try to reverse a hardened deformation with more heat.
Using a firm eraser on the fabric upper
Problem: Abrasive products intended for rubber can abrade canvas fibers.
Recovery: Remove crumbs with a soft brush and return to a damp cloth or soft brush. Reserve firmer cleaning for rubber components only.
A maintenance routine that reduces cleaning risk
- Brush off dry dust and grit after wearing, especially around the toe and sidewalls.
- Spot-clean a small mark instead of wetting the entire upper.
- Keep the pair dry before storing; never seal damp shoes in a box or gym bag.
- Store in a cool, shaded, ventilated place away from heaters and prolonged sunlight.
- Use separate cloths for canvas and rubber so dark rubber grime does not spread into the weave.
- Keep the care label or model name available; instructions can differ between editions and regions.
A practical decision checklist
- Is the shoe plain canvas? If not, identify every added material before applying water.
- Did the hidden-area test stay unchanged? If not, stop and seek model-specific advice.
- Can you clean the mark with a damp cloth? Choose a spot clean before considering a deeper wash.
- Are you using bleach, hot water or direct heat? Remove those steps when preserving color and fit is the priority.
- Does the maker allow machine washing? Follow the exact model guidance; otherwise hand clean.
- Can the shoe dry fully in shade? Prepare ventilation and loose paper before you start.
For most canvas sneakers, the lowest-risk sequence is dry brushing, a hidden patch test, gentle hand cleaning with diluted mild soap, a careful clean-water wipe and slow shaded air-drying with loose paper. That process takes longer than a hot machine cycle, but it gives you control over moisture, friction and heat—the three factors most likely to change a canvas shoe’s color or shape.
