The safest return-home routine is simple: keep luggage off beds and floors while traveling, inspect the room and luggage rack before using them, unpack directly into a laundry area, run dryer-safe items through a high-heat cycle, inspect and isolate the suitcase, and store it outside the bedroom. If exposure is possible, seal belongings in sturdy plastic bags until they can be treated. A bag contains bed bugs; it does not kill them.

These steps reduce the chance that a hitchhiking bug reaches your sleeping area without assuming that every hotel has an infestation or that every traveler will bring one home.

Why luggage is the main risk to control

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes bed bugs as “great hitchhikers.” They can move on luggage and clothing, so the most useful prevention strategy is to reduce contact between those items and places where people sleep, then treat or contain belongings before they enter the bedroom. See the EPA’s Protecting Your Home from Bed Bugs guidance.

Bed bugs are not a reason to assume that every hotel room is infested, and a trip does not mean you will definitely bring one home. The practical goal is to remove easy opportunities for contact and to keep travel belongings in a controlled path until they have been inspected or treated.

Think of the process as five separate jobs:

Job What you do Purpose
Avoid contact Inspect the sleeping area and luggage rack; keep bags off beds and floors. Reduces opportunities for a bug to reach luggage.
Contain Seal potentially exposed belongings in sturdy, large plastic bags. Keeps a possible hitchhiker from moving to another room while you arrange treatment.
Treat Use a high-temperature dryer cycle for items that are safe for it. Heat can kill bed bugs; washing alone generally does not.
Store Keep suitcases in a basement, garage or another area away from the bedroom. Prevents a stored bag from becoming a source near the bed.
Escalate Arrange qualified inspection or treatment when signs indicate an infestation. Uses an integrated pest management response rather than a single household remedy.

No single step substitutes for the others. A suitcase left on the floor can pick up a bug even if you plan to wash clothes later, and a sealed bag is containment rather than a killing method. Keeping treated items separate from untreated items is equally important: otherwise, the clean load can contact the very bag or pile you were trying to isolate.

Can bed bugs travel home in luggage?

Yes. Luggage and clothing can provide a route for a bed bug to hitchhike home, which is why EPA travel guidance focuses on where you place the suitcase and how you handle it after the trip. That possibility is different from certainty. The preventive routine is worthwhile because it limits contact even when you have not seen a bug.

During a stay, an open suitcase on a bed or floor offers more contact opportunities than a closed suitcase on an inspected rack. At home, carrying that open suitcase into the bedroom creates another opportunity for any hitchhiker to reach bedding, carpet or upholstered furniture. A low-contact routine breaks the chain at both points: avoid contact while traveling, then contain or treat belongings before they enter the sleeping area.

How do I keep bed bugs from getting into my home after travel?

Use this sequence from the moment you enter a room until the suitcase is stored. The order matters because it keeps potentially exposed items away from your bed and limits the number of places a bug could hide.

1. Inspect before you settle in

Before sleeping, inspect the mattress and headboard. Also inspect the luggage rack before putting a suitcase on it. EPA travel guidance says a flashlight can make this easier, but the inspection does not require a special kit. Read the agency’s Tips for Travel for the room and rack checks. A small flashlight is therefore an optional convenience, not a specialized product you must buy.

2. Use only an inspected luggage surface

Keep the suitcase away from the bed and floor. If the rack passes inspection, use it instead. Do not put clothing or an open suitcase on the bed while deciding what to wear. The aim is to avoid giving any bug already in the room a direct route into your belongings. Keep the case closed when you are not actively removing something, and avoid spreading loose clothing around the room.

3. Limit how far items travel when you get home

When you return, take the suitcase to a laundry area or another location away from the bedroom. Unpack there rather than placing it on a bed, upholstered chair or bedroom floor. Put clothing and other washable items directly into the washing machine or, preferably, into the dryer if the fabric-care label permits high heat. The point is to avoid creating a temporary pile on the way to the laundry room.

4. Treat suitable items with heat

EPA states that high-temperature dryer time kills bed bugs and that washing alone generally will not. Its integrated pest management guidance specifies 30 minutes in a high-temperature dryer for dryer-safe bedding and clothing. Follow each item’s care label, and do not assume every machine, load size or setting delivers a verified internal temperature. The 30-minute figure is the EPA’s guidance for suitable dryer-safe articles, not a guarantee for materials that cannot tolerate that setting.

When a load is finished, move it to a clean bag, clean container or other clean location rather than placing it back in the suitcase. This simple separation prevents treated items from recontacting an untreated bag. If an item cannot safely tolerate high heat, keep it contained while you obtain an appropriate treatment option instead of guessing that a wash-only cycle solved the problem.

5. Inspect, isolate and store the suitcase

After unpacking, inspect the suitcase carefully. Keep treated clothing from touching the suitcase or any belongings that may still be exposed. Store the empty suitcase in a basement, garage or other place away from the bedroom; never put it under the bed. EPA includes these storage recommendations in its travel and home guidance. Storage away from the bedroom is a prevention measure, not proof that the case is pest-free, so continue to contain it if inspection raises concerns.

What should I do with my suitcase after staying in a hotel?

Handle the suitcase as a potentially exposed object until you have checked it. The following procedure keeps the inspection focused and prevents a rushed unpacking from spreading a problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose the inspection location. Use the laundry area, garage, basement or another space away from sleeping areas. Do not carry an open suitcase onto a bed to sort it.
  2. Open it where it can be contained. Keep a large sealable plastic bag or bags nearby for items that you cannot treat immediately.
  3. Remove clothing straight to treatment. Put dryer-safe items into a high-temperature dryer cycle, following care labels. Do not leave the pile on the floor while you do something else.
  4. Check the suitcase itself. Examine it carefully before returning it to storage. If you suspect exposure, keep it isolated rather than carrying it through the bedroom.
  5. Separate treated and untreated belongings. Once an item has completed the appropriate heat treatment, place it in a clean location or clean bag so it does not contact the suitcase or an untreated pile.
  6. Store the suitcase away from the bedroom. A garage or basement is preferable to under-bed storage, which puts the bag next to the place where you sleep.

If the case cannot be treated in a clothes dryer and you find evidence that it is infested, do not improvise with a household oven, space heater or a car. Professional heat treatment is the applicable EPA guidance for infested articles that cannot go in a dryer.

Large sealable plastic storage bags for travel laundry can be useful as an organizing and containment aid. Choose bags large enough to close without forcing items out, seal them before moving them, and label them mentally or physically as treated or untreated. No ordinary bag should be described as a product that kills bed bugs.

How to handle clothing and other belongings

Dryer-safe clothing and bedding

Use a high-temperature dryer cycle for clothing and bedding that the manufacturer allows you to dry at high heat. EPA’s stated parameter is 30 minutes at high temperature. Washing by itself generally does not kill bed bugs, so a wash-only cycle should not be treated as the complete control step. If an item’s label forbids high heat, use containment while you obtain an appropriate treatment option instead of risking damage or assuming the wash removed the risk.

Items that cannot go in a dryer

For infested articles such as luggage that cannot go in a clothes dryer, EPA describes heat treatment of at least 120°F (approximately 49°C) for 90 minutes to ensure eggs are killed. This is professional treatment guidance. It is not a direction to put luggage in an oven, place it beside a heater, or leave it in a vehicle and hope the center reaches the required temperature. The interior of a packed suitcase may remain much cooler than its surroundings, and the guidance does not certify improvised methods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bagging as a containment step

Use sturdy, large sealable plastic bags to hold clothing or suspected belongings until treatment. Seal the bag before moving it to another room, and keep it closed while arranging the next step. The EPA’s home guidance supports bagging as a way to contain belongings; it does not present ordinary plastic bags as a treatment that kills bed bugs. Do not reopen a bag in the bedroom simply to reorganize it.

What if I find a bed bug or other evidence?

Stop normal unpacking and keep potentially affected items contained. Do not respond by spraying the suitcase as a general precaution. A pesticide label is specific to the product, surfaces, application method and use directions. The EPA-hosted label for registration 239-2746, dated March 24, 2025, cannot be generalized to every suitcase material or to other products: read the label before considering any pesticide use.

EPA describes bed bug control as an integrated pest management process. That means combining inspection, containment, cleaning or heat treatment and monitoring, then choosing additional control measures appropriate to the situation. Its integrated pest management guidance and do-it-yourself control guidance explain why a single household remedy is not a complete plan.

When professional help is the sensible next step

Arrange qualified inspection or treatment when you find a bed bug, find evidence that belongings or a room may be infested, or cannot safely treat an item yourself. Keep the suspected items sealed while you make arrangements, and tell the professional which objects have already been heated, washed, bagged or left untreated. This information helps prevent unnecessary handling and keeps the response coordinated. A local inspection or integrated pest management provider may be appropriate; verify the provider’s qualifications, service area and treatment terms before hiring.

Common mistakes and the safer correction

Mistake Why it fails Correction
Putting a suitcase on the bed “just for a minute.” It creates direct contact with the sleeping area before inspection. Use an inspected luggage rack and keep the bag off the bed and floor.
Unpacking in the bedroom. Potentially exposed clothing can contact bedding, carpet or furniture. Unpack beside the laundry area or in another space away from the bedroom.
Relying on washing alone. EPA says washing alone generally does not kill bed bugs. Use the high-temperature dryer guidance for items that can safely tolerate it.
Assuming a sealed bag kills the contents. A bag is a barrier, not a verified treatment. Keep it sealed until the contents receive an appropriate treatment.
Putting the suitcase under the bed after the trip. The bag remains next to the sleeping area. Store it in a basement, garage or another location away from the bedroom.
Spraying every suitcase as a precaution. Labels are product- and surface-specific; misuse can create exposure or damage. Contain the item and follow a qualified, label-compliant or professional plan.
Trying to heat luggage in an oven, car or beside a heater. Improvised heating does not verify that the coldest part reaches the required temperature and can create fire or damage risks. Use a professional heat-treatment service for items that cannot go in a dryer.
Mixing treated and untreated loads. A treated item can contact an exposed suitcase or pile and lose the benefit of separation. Use a clean bag or container for items after the dryer cycle.

Recovery paths for common situations

You already placed the suitcase on the bed

Move it to an area away from the bedroom without shaking or sorting it there. Treat dryer-safe clothing using the high-temperature dryer guidance, bag items that cannot be treated immediately, and inspect the suitcase before storage. Check the bed and headboard as part of the room inspection process. If you find evidence of infestation, keep items contained and seek qualified help rather than assuming the brief contact proves or disproves an infestation.

You unpacked before remembering the precautions

Do not carry the clothing pile from room to room. Put dryer-safe pieces directly into a high-temperature dryer cycle, and place items that cannot be treated immediately into sealed bags. Once treated, keep them separate from the suitcase and untreated belongings. The earlier you create this separation, the fewer surfaces require inspection.

You have no dryer

Keep the clothing and suitcase sealed or isolated away from the bedroom while arranging an appropriate treatment. Do not substitute a wash-only cycle or an improvised heat source for the documented dryer or professional heat parameters. A qualified pest-management provider can advise on heat treatment for luggage and other articles that cannot enter a clothes dryer.

You are unsure whether the room or bag was exposed

Use the same low-contact routine rather than guessing: inspect the mattress and headboard, inspect the luggage rack, keep luggage off the bed and floor, unpack away from the bedroom, and treat or contain belongings. These measures are useful even when no bug is found because they reduce opportunities for hitchhiking without claiming that exposure occurred.

A compact checklist for every trip

  • Before sleeping, inspect the mattress and headboard.
  • Inspect the luggage rack before placing a suitcase on it.
  • Keep luggage off the bed and floor throughout the stay.
  • On arrival home, take the suitcase to a laundry area or other space away from the bedroom.
  • Put dryer-safe clothing and bedding directly into a high-temperature dryer cycle, following care labels.
  • Remember that washing alone generally will not kill bed bugs.
  • Inspect the suitcase and keep treated items away from anything still untreated.
  • Seal potentially exposed belongings in sturdy, large plastic bags until treatment.
  • Store the suitcase in a basement, garage or other location away from the bedroom, never under the bed.
  • If you find evidence of infestation, keep belongings contained and arrange an integrated pest management response.

The goal is not to sterilize every object after every trip. It is to prevent contact with the sleeping area, move travel items through a controlled laundry-and-inspection routine, and escalate appropriately when evidence appears.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can bed bugs travel home in luggage?

Yes. Bed bugs can hitchhike on luggage and clothing. Keep bags off beds and floors, inspect the luggage rack, and use a controlled unpacking and treatment routine at home. This risk does not mean every hotel is infested or that every traveler will bring one home.

What should I do with my suitcase after staying in a hotel?

Take it to a laundry area, garage, basement or another place away from the bedroom. Remove dryer-safe clothing directly into a high-temperature dryer cycle, inspect the suitcase, and store it away from the bedroom rather than under the bed.

Does washing alone kill bed bugs?

Generally, no. EPA says high-temperature dryer time kills bed bugs, while washing alone generally will not. Follow care labels and use the dryer for items that can safely tolerate high heat.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

How long should clothes go in a hot dryer?

EPA’s integrated pest management guidance specifies 30 minutes in a high-temperature dryer for dryer-safe bedding and clothing. Follow fabric-care directions, and do not treat that figure as a guarantee for items that cannot tolerate the setting or for every machine configuration.

Do plastic bags kill bed bugs?

No. Sturdy, sealed plastic bags contain potentially exposed belongings and keep them from spreading while you arrange treatment, but ordinary bags are not a verified killing method.

Can I spray my suitcase as a precaution?

Do not spray luggage generically. Pesticide labels are specific to the product, surface and application directions. If you consider a pesticide, follow its exact label or obtain qualified professional advice.

How are infested suitcases treated if they cannot go in a dryer?

EPA describes professional heat treatment of at least 120°F (about 49°C) for 90 minutes to ensure eggs are killed. Do not attempt to reproduce this with an oven, car, space heater or other improvised method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if I find evidence after unpacking?

Stop moving items, seal potentially affected belongings, and arrange qualified inspection or treatment. Share which items were heated, washed, bagged or left untreated so the response can follow an integrated pest management plan.

The Bottom Line

Keep luggage off beds and floors, inspect before settling in, unpack away from the bedroom, use a high-heat dryer for suitable items, contain anything questionable, and store suitcases outside the bedroom. If you find evidence of bed bugs, avoid improvised heat or blanket pesticide spraying and seek an integrated professional response.
