The safest approach is to prevent avoidable disturbance, make large areas of glass continuously visible, and use only the minimum, warmest, best-shielded lighting you need. Barn owls regularly roost and nest in barns, sheds, houses and other structures, so a building project, bright lamp or reflective window can affect a site they already use. If a nest or roost is occupied, pause disruptive work and obtain advice from a qualified local ecologist or wildlife authority before changing the building.
Window-marker and lighting recommendations below are based mainly on general bird-conservation guidance. No searched source established a barn-owl-specific window-strike rate, product trial or universal safe distance for outdoor lights. Treat the limits of the evidence as part of the safety plan.
Why buildings can be useful—and risky—for barn owls
Barn owls can use purpose-built nest spaces and cavities inside agricultural, residential and other buildings. The Barn Owl Trust’s building-project guidance notes that owls may occupy sites with regular human activity when they have a place to hide. Predictable, routine activity can be less disruptive than sudden changes, although tolerance varies by site and season.
The same building can present hazards. A newly installed or uncovered pane may reflect sky or vegetation, and lights can make glass and the surrounding structure more attractive to flying birds at night. Renovation noise, roof access, camera installation or blocking an entrance can also disturb a nest or roost. A sensible plan therefore starts with finding out whether owls are present, then separating routine maintenance from work that could alter an occupied site.

First check whether a nest or roost is occupied
Do not enter, seal, clean out or remodel a suspected nest space simply because no owl is visible. Look for repeated use of a loft, barn, tower, cavity or open entrance, and ask a local wildlife professional to assess signs without prolonged inspection. Avoid shining lights into openings, handling eggs or chicks, or installing a camera as an initial “check.” The Barn Owl Trust’s advice on nest cameras, lighting and photography explains why observation equipment and illumination can themselves cause disturbance.
If a project may affect a known or suspected site, use this sequence:
- Stop potentially disruptive work. Do not close an entrance, remove a roof section, strip a loft, run cables through a nest area or direct work lights into an opening until the site has been assessed.
- Record the location without approaching it. Note the building, entrance, date and the type of work planned. Keep people, pets and machinery away from the likely flight path.
- Contact the right authority. Ask a qualified ecologist or your local wildlife authority what survey, timing, exclusion zone and licence requirements apply in your jurisdiction.
- Redesign the project. Preserve access to the roost or nest, schedule unavoidable work for the least sensitive period identified by local experts, and include a replacement nest space only when it is part of an approved plan.
- Recheck after work. Confirm that entrances remain usable and that new lights, glazing, scaffolding and security equipment do not shine into or obstruct the site.
Legal rules are location-specific. In England, Natural England’s CL29 licence guidance applies to registered persons carrying out specified observation surveys for development projects. It states: “You must minimise disturbance to barn owls and other wild birds or anything that might endanger their breeding success.” CL29 is statutory guidance for England, not a universal permission or rule for other countries. A licence to survey does not automatically authorise renovation, demolition or disturbance; obtain the separate approvals your location requires.

What is known about glass collisions
Birds can fly toward reflections of sky and plants or toward apparent open space through transparent glass. Night lighting can draw birds closer to a lit building. The U.S. National Park Service summarizes the general collision evidence in its Bird Safe Glass guidance: “Visual markers such as dots or stripes spaced no more than 2 inches apart are the most effective, while one or two decals of predatory birds are ineffective.” The page was updated February 3, 2025.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service lists exterior patterns, tape, decals, film, screens, netting and bird-friendly glass among possible measures in its building-and-glass collision guidance. These are general bird recommendations. The sources do not report a barn-owl-specific test showing that one product or pattern performs best for barn owls.
Choose coverage and spacing first
| Option | How it reduces risk | Practical considerations | Evidence limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| External patterned markers | Creates a continuous visual grid or stripe pattern on the outside surface. | Use spacing of no more than 2 inches (about 5 cm), follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions and inspect for peeling or gaps. | General bird guidance; no barn-owl product trial identified. |
| Exterior tape or film | Adds closely spaced lines or dots that break up reflections. | Exterior placement is important; replace weathered sections and cover the full hazardous pane rather than only eye-level areas. | General bird guidance; durability depends on the product and exposure. |
| Mesh screen or netting | Places a physical buffer in front of the glass so a bird cannot strike the pane directly. | Install tautly, leave no trapping gaps, maintain emergency egress and keep the screen away from an owl entrance or flight route. | General bird collision measure; barn-owl-specific performance was not established. |
| Replacement bird-friendly glass | Uses a permanent pattern or construction intended to be visible to birds. | Best considered during a new build or window replacement; confirm pattern visibility, maintenance and local building requirements. | Do not treat a product as barn-owl tested unless its documentation provides that evidence. |
| One or two predator-bird decals | Provides isolated silhouettes. | Easy to apply, but isolated decals leave most of the reflective pane untreated. | NPS says one or two are ineffective. |
For a pane that presents a collision risk, favor a continuous, closely spaced external pattern. A few decorative stickers in a corner do not meet that objective. Search terms such as bird window collision markers can help you find suitable products, but check spacing, exterior use, cleaning instructions and coverage before buying.
Installation checklist for existing windows
- Identify the whole hazard. Include adjacent panes, glass doors, corner windows and sections that reflect a tree, open sky or a lit room.
- Mark the exterior. Apply a grid, dots or stripes on the outside surface where possible; interior-only patterns can be hidden by reflections.
- Keep gaps within the recommended spacing. The NPS recommendation is no more than 2 inches between visual markers. Cover the pane rather than placing a single emblem in the center.
- Check edges and adjacent glass. Birds can approach from angles, so treat the complete reflective section and any neighboring pane that forms one apparent opening.
- Inspect after weather and cleaning. Replace loose tape or film, and do not remove markers during seasonal cleaning unless you reinstall them immediately.
- Reduce nighttime attraction as well. Close blinds or curtains when practical and turn off indoor lights that shine through the pane when they are not needed.
Use outdoor lights only where and when they are needed
Start with removal, shielding and direction
The most reliable first step is not a different bulb but less unnecessary light. Turn off decorative, security and work lights when no one needs them. Aim essential light downward and away from windows, nest entrances and roost openings. Fit a shield or hood so the fixture illuminates the ground or doorway rather than the sky and building face, then select the lowest brightness that still meets the genuine safety task.
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service explains that “Turning off unneeded lights by hand or using timers and motion sensors can not only lessen bird attraction to glass, but can also reduce energy costs and light pollution overall.” Its nighttime-lighting guidance also recommends warmer colors and avoiding blue, white or cooler light where possible.

Compare practical lighting controls
| Measure | What it changes | Best use | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Switch lights off | Removes light and spill completely. | Decorative lighting, empty rooms, unused outbuildings and temporary work areas. | Requires a person to remember; do not disable lighting needed for a real safety function. |
| Timer | Limits operation to defined hours. | Entrances or paths that need light at predictable times. | Can leave lights on when schedules change; review seasonal settings. |
| Motion sensor | Activates light only when movement is detected. | Short-duration access or security lighting. | False triggers can increase light use; set sensitivity and timeout carefully. |
| Shielding and downward aiming | Reduces skyglow and spill toward glass or an opening while retaining useful illumination. | Any required fixture near a building, nest or roost. | A poorly fitted shield can still leak light; verify from the owl’s approach and from the nest entrance. |
| Dimming | Reduces brightness while maintaining orientation or access lighting. | Areas that need continuous low-level illumination. | Do not assume the dimmest setting is safe if the beam still points into a roost. |
| Warmer LED color | Reduces short-wavelength output compared with blue or cool-white lamps. | Replacement of an essential fixture after spill and operating hours have been addressed. | Color alone cannot compensate for a bright, badly aimed lamp. |
Choose warmer color when a light is unavoidable
Fish & Wildlife Service guidance describes warm light as longer than 560 nanometres and below 2700 K correlated colour temperature, and advises avoiding blue, white or cooler lighting. Use that as a wildlife-conscious specification for an essential fixture, not as a guaranteed barn-owl solution. A warm lamp pointed directly at a nest opening can still be disruptive.
Keep light away from nest and roost entrances
After installation, stand where an owl would approach the building and look toward the fixture. Check the entrance itself, the interior surfaces around it and nearby glass. If any beam reaches the opening, rotate or shield the fixture, lower its output, shorten its operating time or relocate it. Do not install a camera light or floodlight at an occupied entrance merely to obtain better footage.
What the current owl-lighting evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The 150-metre road finding is not a building setback
A 2026 Barn Owl Trust review of road-collision mitigation, summarising an Irish study by Lusby and colleagues (2021), reports that artificial lighting within 150 m was associated with increased barn-owl fatalities at road sites. That result concerns road-collision locations and an association in one study. It does not establish that a building light is safe beyond 150 m, unsafe within 150 m, or that a nest, roost or window needs a universal lighting buffer of that size.

The 2025 nest-occupancy study is context-specific
A 2025 study, “Artificial light at night (ALAN) negatively affects nest site occupancy but does not influence breeding success in two sympatric owl species”, reported lower nest-site occupancy but no effect on breeding success in its study context. It does not show that every barn-owl population responds the same way, identify a universally safe light level, or prove that a particular lamp protects an occupied nest. Use it as a reason to reduce unnecessary light while following local ecological advice.

Plan building work around the owl, not the other way around
Routine work away from an occupied site
Work that stays well away from a confirmed nest or roost may need only ordinary precautions: keep access routes clear, avoid aiming lights at openings, control dust and noise where feasible, and brief contractors not to enter the space. Ask an ecologist if you cannot confidently distinguish an unused area from an occupied one.
Work that changes the structure or access
Roof replacement, demolition, blocking a flight entrance, converting a loft, installing insulation, adding a window, mounting a camera or relocating an exterior lamp can all change the conditions an owl uses. Obtain a site assessment and legal advice before starting. A replacement nest box or internal nest space may be appropriate, but its location, timing and design should be selected with a qualified adviser; adding a box does not make it lawful to disturb an existing nest.
If you discover a nest after work has started
- Stop the activity closest to the nest and withdraw people and equipment.
- Do not touch eggs, chicks, nesting material or the adult birds.
- Keep the entrance open and avoid adding lights, radios or cameras.
- Contact the relevant wildlife authority or a qualified ecologist for an urgent assessment.
- Follow the written advice on exclusion, timing, monitoring and any required licence before resuming.
A building-by-building safety checklist
- Survey: Is there evidence of a current nest or regular roost use?
- Access: Are entrances and flight paths open, unobstructed and free of netting or loose mesh that could trap a bird?
- Glass: Are all hazardous panes covered externally with a continuous pattern whose gaps are no more than 2 inches, or protected by a properly installed screen?
- Lighting: Can each fixture be removed, switched off, timed, motion-controlled, dimmed, shielded or redirected?
- Color: If lighting remains essential, is a warmer source below 2700 K and longer than 560 nm feasible?
- Spill: Does any beam enter a nest or roost opening, illuminate reflective glass or point into the sky?
- Maintenance: Who will inspect markers, screens, sensors and shields after cleaning, storms or construction?
- Compliance: Have you checked the wildlife rules and permits for your country, state, county or municipality?
Common mistakes and their fixes
“I put up two owl decals, so the window is safe.”
Isolated predator decals leave most of the pane reflective. Replace them with a continuous, closely spaced external pattern or a suitable screen.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“The light is warm, so it cannot affect owls.”
Warm color is only one factor. Switch off unnecessary operation, shorten the schedule, shield the fixture and keep its beam away from openings and glass.

“The 150-metre figure tells me how far the lamp must be from the barn.”
That number comes from an association with road fatalities in one Irish study, not a universal building or nest setback. Have the actual site assessed instead.
“No owl was visible, so I sealed the entrance.”
Absence during a brief inspection does not establish abandonment. Stop and obtain ecological and legal advice before closing or remodeling the space.
“A licence to observe means I can proceed with construction.”
England’s CL29 is a specific survey licence under stated conditions. It is not a blanket construction authorization, and it does not apply automatically outside England.
