Keep the graph accurate by separating stable entity identity from changing metadata, recording every observation with provenance and time, reconciling updates against explicit freshness rules, and treating telemetry schemas and runtime traces as evidence—not as an automatic inventory. OpenTelemetry provides the identity, resource, and schema concepts for this design, but it does not prescribe one complete knowledge-graph product or reconciliation algorithm.
What “accurate” means for an observability knowledge graph
An observability graph normally contains nodes such as services, processes, hosts, containers, Kubernetes pods, and clusters, plus edges such as “runs on,” “calls,” “routes through,” or “is deployed in.” Accuracy has several dimensions:
- Identity accuracy: the same real entity receives the same graph identity wherever it is observed, while a replacement entity receives a new identity when domain semantics require it.
- Property accuracy: mutable fields such as version, zone, image, owner, and deployment labels reflect the latest trustworthy observation without changing the node’s identity.
- Relationship accuracy: edges say whether a dependency was observed at runtime, declared in configuration, or supplied by an authoritative inventory.
- Temporal accuracy: users can tell when a fact was observed, how long it remains trusted, and whether it describes the current state or a historical one.
- Schema accuracy: producers and consumers agree on semantic-convention versions and transformations, or explicitly handle incompatibility.
A graph that only shows the latest span stream can look plausible while silently losing idle dependencies, merging two generations of a service, or retaining a dead pod forever. The maintenance design below prevents those failures by preserving raw observations and deriving a current view from them.

Define entity types and minimally sufficient identity
Start with a written identity contract for every node type. OpenTelemetry’s Entity Data Model distinguishes an entity’s stable Type and ID from descriptive attributes that can change. Its guidance is that identifying attributes should be values observers can obtain repeatedly. In practical terms, an identity key should be sufficient to distinguish the entity, but no larger than necessary.

“The identifying attributes for entity SHOULD be values that can be repeatably obtained by observers of that entity.”
Do not use a display name, release number, owner label, or current image digest as identity unless the domain explicitly defines that value as the entity’s continuity boundary. Those fields belong in mutable properties. Changing them should update the node, not create an accidental duplicate.
Example identity rules
| Entity type | Minimally sufficient key to consider | Typical mutable properties |
|---|---|---|
| Service | A stable service identifier in the organization’s naming domain | Version, deployment, team, region, repository, traffic labels |
| Process | The process identity for its lifetime; OpenTelemetry gives (process.pid, process.start_time) as an example |
Command line, executable path, arguments, runtime version |
| Container | The runtime’s stable container identifier | Image, labels, resource limits, restart count |
| Kubernetes pod | The cluster-scoped pod identity supplied by the API | Phase, node assignment, labels, IP address, image |
| Host | A stable host or instance identifier from the infrastructure source | Hostname, zone, kernel, capacity, health state |
| Cluster | The provider or organization’s stable cluster identifier | Version, region, control-plane endpoint, labels |
The table is a design starting point, not a universal mapping. For example, a process restart normally creates a new process entity even when its executable name is unchanged. A service may intentionally represent a logical workload across many short-lived pods, while a pod remains a separate physical runtime entity.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Record identity semantics explicitly
For each type, document whether replacing an underlying object preserves identity. State what happens during a restart, reimage, blue-green deployment, cluster migration, or namespace rename. Include the identifier’s scope (host, cluster, account, or global), its expected lifetime, and the source that owns it. This prevents two teams from using the same field with incompatible meanings.
Make identity comparable across observers
Inventory every source that can report an entity: SDKs, collectors, orchestration APIs, cloud inventory, service-mesh telemetry, deployment systems, and configuration repositories. Then test whether those observers can produce the same key for the same object.
OpenTelemetry’s resource-and-entity guidance describes a common problem with service.instance.id: an SDK and an external observer may not discover the value consistently unless a shared source injects it or the SDK relates it to another entity visible to both. A graph should not accept two independently generated values as if they were canonical identities.

Use an authority and fallback rule
- Choose the source that can reliably identify the entity and designate it as the authority for that identity.
- Allow other observers to attach evidence to the authoritative node by using the same key or an explicit relation to it.
- If a source cannot supply a reliable identifier, let it report a different entity type or a partial observation rather than minting a conflicting canonical node.
- Keep the original source value and mapping decision so an operator can audit how two observations were joined.
This approach follows the multi-observer principle in OpenTelemetry’s Resource and Entities guidance: identity must be comparable, and a source that cannot populate it reliably should defer to one that can.
Namespace keys to avoid collisions
Store identity as a tuple such as (entity_type, authority, id, scope), not as a bare string. A pod ID, cloud instance ID, and process ID can have the same text while referring to different domains. Namespacing also makes migrations safer: you can introduce a new authority without overwriting historical records from the old one.
Store observations, provenance, and time before deriving the graph
A practical implementation keeps an append-only or slowly expiring observation layer and computes the user-facing graph from it. Each observation should contain:
- the canonical entity key, or the source-local key when canonical mapping is not yet possible;
- the source name and discovery method;
- the observed timestamp and, when available, the source event timestamp;
- the telemetry schema URL or convention version;
- the reported attributes and relationship endpoints;
- authority, confidence, or precedence information defined by your team;
- an observation state such as active, stale, retracted, or superseded.
OpenTelemetry specifications establish identity and schema concepts, but they do not define a universal provenance database or freshness time-to-live. The provenance model and retention policy are engineering choices. Making them explicit lets a user distinguish “the service called the database five minutes ago” from “the service is configured to call the database” and from “the database is listed in authoritative inventory.”
Separate fact types
| Fact | Meaning | Retirement trigger |
|---|---|---|
| Runtime observation | An operation or relationship was seen in telemetry during a stated period | Source-specific freshness window or an explicit retraction |
| Configuration declaration | A route, dependency, or deployment is declared by configuration | Configuration revision removes or changes it |
| Inventory assertion | An authoritative API or inventory feed reports an entity or relationship | Source reports deletion, replacement, or a defined expiry |
| Historical identity | A prior entity or edge needed to explain an earlier incident | Retention policy, not a missing current observation |
Do not infer that absence from one stream means deletion everywhere. A quiet service may simply have had no traffic during the sampled window.
Reconcile changes with a deliberate update workflow
Run every incoming observation through the same sequence. The workflow below is a recommended implementation pattern; OpenTelemetry does not mandate this exact algorithm.

- Normalize the envelope. Parse the source, observed time, schema URL, scope, and entity type. Reject records that lack the minimum fields required for that type, or quarantine them for review.
- Resolve identity. Match the observation to a canonical key using the identity contract and source mappings. If no reliable match exists, retain a source-local observation instead of guessing.
- Update mutable properties. Apply field-level precedence rules. For example, let an orchestration API own pod phase while telemetry supplies last-seen activity. Do not let a lower-authority update erase a newer authoritative value.
- Upsert relationships. Add or update an edge with its source, timestamps, relationship type, and evidence state. Keep runtime-observed and configured edges distinguishable.
- Evaluate freshness. Mark an observation stale only when the source’s semantics and your explicit policy justify it. A telemetry source that reports only active spans cannot prove that an idle dependency was removed.
- Handle replacement. When an identity contract says a restart or re-created object is new, close the old lifecycle record and create a new node. Link the records with a replacement or successor relation if investigations need continuity.
- Publish a derived view. Materialize the current graph from active observations while retaining historical records for incident timelines and audits.
Prevent destructive updates
Use compare-and-set or version checks when multiple collectors update the same node. A late event should not overwrite a newer property merely because it arrived later. Keep both event time and ingestion time so operators can diagnose clock skew and delayed delivery.
Version telemetry schemas without breaking consumers
OpenTelemetry telemetry schemas are versioned and identified by Schema URLs. The Telemetry Schemas specification describes transformations between schema versions when conversion is possible. A producer can include a schema URL, and a consumer can transform data to the schema expected at the point of use.
That mechanism is narrower than a complete compatibility guarantee. The schema documentation focuses on semantic-convention evolution; it is not a declaration of every valid telemetry value or data type. The current OpenTelemetry versioning and stability page also warns about a moratorium on relying on schema transformations for telemetry stability. Treat transformations as an explicit compatibility tool, not as permission to upgrade blindly.

- Record the emitted schema URL and semantic-convention version with test fixtures.

- Run a compatibility test that ingests old and new fixtures into a staging graph and checks node matching, edge creation, alert predicates, and joins.
- Deploy a canary and monitor missing fields, unexpected cardinality, duplicate nodes, and failed transformations.
- Keep rollback support for both producer and consumer versions until the graph has processed the transition safely.
When a change cannot be converted without loss, treat it as breaking. Update consumers deliberately rather than hiding the difference behind a best-effort parser.
Use resource metadata to join signals correctly
OpenTelemetry resources associate a signal with the entity that produced it and can carry process, pod, namespace, deployment, host, container, and cloud context. Resource detectors can populate many of these fields automatically. Set service.name explicitly: the SDK default is unknown_service, which is rarely a useful canonical service identity. Details are documented on the OpenTelemetry Resources page, last modified February 10, 2026.
Use resource attributes as join keys only when their identity semantics are understood. A deployment label may help filter a graph but should not replace a stable service or instance key. Preserve the resource snapshot with the observation so a later metadata change does not rewrite historical telemetry.

Choose a telescoping identity level
OpenTelemetry’s resource-and-entity material discusses a trade-off sometimes described as telescoping identity. A compact signal carries fewer identity fields and reduces emission and storage cost, but downstream systems must join it to resource metadata. A more denormalized signal carries more identity context and reduces joins, at the cost of larger payloads and possible duplication. Those joins can be expensive on high-performance paths such as alert evaluation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Strategy | Advantages | Risks | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact identity | Smaller telemetry and centralized metadata updates | Late or expensive joins; missing metadata can make a signal opaque | High-volume storage where a reliable metadata service is available |
| Denormalized identity | Fast queries and simpler alert joins; signals remain understandable in isolation | Larger payloads, repeated values, and drift between copies | Latency-sensitive alerting and export paths |
| Hybrid | Stable key always present, selected context copied for critical queries | Requires clear ownership of copied fields | Most mixed observability environments |
Whichever strategy you choose, make the stable key mandatory and define which copied attributes are advisory versus authoritative.
Use runtime traces as evidence, not a complete topology inventory
Traces show relationships that were exercised during an observed period. They are valuable evidence for edges such as service-to-service calls, controller operations, and storage access, but they cannot prove that every possible dependency has been seen. Combine runtime evidence with configuration and inventory when the graph must show configured-but-idle paths.
Kubernetes documents system-component tracing as beta since Kubernetes v1.27. The official Traces For Kubernetes System Components page describes traces that record operation latency and relationships. Export uses OTLP over gRPC; traces can be routed through an OpenTelemetry Collector or sent directly to a backend. Verify the feature support and configuration for the exact Kubernetes version you operate before treating those traces as a source.
Model edge evidence explicitly
- Observed edge: a trace or metric demonstrated activity between two identified entities.
- Configured edge: a route, policy, service binding, or deployment manifest declares a possible relationship.
- Inventory edge: an authoritative platform API reports the relationship.
- Inferred edge: a derived relation created by a documented rule; keep it visibly distinct from direct evidence.
When an observed edge disappears, mark it stale according to the trace source’s coverage and sampling behavior. Do not immediately delete it, especially if sampling, outages, or low traffic could explain the absence.
Compare maintenance strategies using the same decision axes
Teams often debate whether a graph should be built primarily from traces, inventory, configuration, or a blended pipeline. Compare the options on identity stability, authority, freshness, schema handling, coverage, and join cost rather than choosing by convenience.

| Primary source | Identity stability | Coverage | Freshness interpretation | Typical limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Runtime telemetry | Depends on resource attributes and instrumentation consistency | Relationships exercised during observed traffic | Recent observation means activity, not necessarily configuration | Sampling and idle paths hide possible dependencies |
| Orchestration or cloud inventory | Usually strong for platform objects within its scope | Entities and platform relationships | Depends on event delivery and API consistency | May not reveal application-level calls |
| Configuration and deployment data | Strong for declared names when namespaces are controlled | Potential or intended relationships | Valid until the referenced revision changes | Configuration can differ from runtime behavior |
| Blended pipeline | Can reconcile multiple observers through canonical keys | Combines configured, inventoried, and exercised edges | Per-source policy is required | More complex provenance and conflict resolution |
A blended design is usually the most expressive, but it is only accurate when each source’s authority and absence semantics are documented.
Operational runbook for keeping the graph current
Before onboarding a new producer
- Assign an entity type and identity contract.
- Confirm the producer can emit the canonical key or a supported mapping.
- Capture resource attributes and schema URL.
- Define which relationships the producer can prove and which it cannot.
- Add fixtures for startup, restart, scale-out, deployment, and deletion.
During a deployment or schema upgrade
- Check for identity-field changes separately from descriptive-field changes.
- Run old and new telemetry through graph matching tests.
- Watch for duplicate services, sudden cardinality growth, missing edges, and
unknown_service. - Keep old observations long enough to explain incidents that span the rollout.
During an incident
- Inspect the edge’s evidence type, source, observed time, and schema version.
- Compare the current derived view with the historical observation layer.
- Check whether a missing edge reflects sampling, inactivity, stale inventory, or an identity mismatch.
- Prefer authoritative inventory for existence questions and traces for exercised-relationship questions.
Common failure modes and precise fixes
Duplicate nodes after every release
Cause: version or deployment labels are being used as identity. Fix: move those fields to mutable properties and retain a stable service key. If the domain intentionally treats each release as a separate entity, document that lifecycle rule and link releases to the logical service.
One process appears to survive a restart
Cause: the graph keys processes only by executable name or PID. Fix: include a lifetime discriminator such as process start time, following the minimally sufficient process identity example in the Entity Data Model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSDK telemetry and inventory cannot be joined
Cause: each observer generates a different instance identifier. Fix: inject a shared identifier, relate the SDK entity to a visible parent, or let the more reliable observer own canonical identity and retain the SDK value as source-local metadata.
Dashboards fail after a convention update
Cause: a consumer assumed field names or types would remain unchanged. Fix: pin schema and instrumentation versions, test transformations where supported, and update critical queries as part of the upgrade. Do not assume the schema mechanism covers every compatibility issue.
Dependencies disappear when traffic is low
Cause: absence of spans is treated as deletion. Fix: retain the edge as stale or configured according to source-specific policy, and use inventory or configuration to represent possible but idle paths.
Alerts become slow after centralizing metadata
Cause: every alert evaluation performs a high-cardinality metadata join. Fix: carry the stable key plus the small set of identity context required on the alert path, while keeping the full resource record in the metadata store.
A compact design checklist
- Every entity type has a stable, scoped, minimally sufficient identity.
- Identity fields are separated from mutable descriptive attributes.
- Multiple observers can produce or map to the same identity.
- Unreliable observers cannot mint conflicting canonical nodes.
- Observations retain source, event time, ingestion time, schema context, and evidence type.
- Freshness and deletion semantics are defined per source.
- Historical identities and relationships remain queryable for incident analysis.
- Schema and instrumentation upgrades are tested against graph joins and alerts.
service.nameis explicitly set rather than left atunknown_service.- Runtime traces are combined with configuration or inventory when completeness matters.
- Denormalization and join costs are evaluated separately for storage, queries, and alerting.
Putting the pattern into practice
The durable pattern is to make identity boring and explicit, make observations rich in provenance, and make the current graph a derived interpretation rather than the only copy of reality. Stable keys let observers agree; resource metadata connects signals to their producers; schema URLs and tested upgrades protect consumers; and source-specific freshness rules prevent a quiet telemetry window from erasing valid topology. With those boundaries in place, the graph can evolve through deployments, restarts, platform migrations, and convention changes without rewriting the past or presenting guesses as facts.
