An automatic watch runs from energy generated by movement on your wrist. When you take it off, it continues only until its stored power reserve is exhausted. To keep it running and ready to wear, place it in a watch winder that is compatible with the exact movement and configured according to the watch manual. A winder is optional, however: letting the watch stop and winding it by hand when you need it is also normal and safe when you follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

What happens when you take off an automatic watch?

An automatic, or self-winding, mechanical watch uses a rotor that turns as your wrist moves. That motion winds the mainspring, which stores energy. Once the watch is removed, the rotor no longer receives regular movement, so the stored energy gradually runs down. The watch then stops; this is expected behavior, not automatically a fault.

How long it runs is called the power reserve. It is determined by the particular movement, how fully it was wound, and the watch’s design. There is no single runtime that applies to every automatic watch.

Published power-reserve ranges are model-specific

Manufacturer guidance Published range Qualification
Patek Philippe 38–48 hours Applies generally to its self-winding movements, with exceptions for specific models.
TAG Heuer 40–70 hours Range given for its watches; the exact reference determines the result.
CHANEL 38–70 hours Varies by model.

These figures are manufacturer-published ranges, not an industry standard or a guarantee for an unidentified watch. Find the movement or reference number on the case, papers, or manual and use the reserve stated for that exact watch. If you remove a watch in the evening and it is stopped the next morning, that does not by itself prove a problem; the reserve may simply be shorter than the time it was left unworn.

Choose between a watch winder and letting the watch stop

You have two legitimate approaches. A compatible automatic watch winder keeps the movement turning while the watch is off your wrist. The alternative is to let the reserve run out and restart the watch when you plan to wear it. The right choice depends on whether continuous readiness is worth adding another device and setup step.

Approach Best when What you must check Important limitation
Compatible watch winder You want the watch to remain running, set, and ready between wears. Case fit, movement compatibility, winding direction, and the settings specified by the watch manual. It is a convenience; the cited manufacturer guidance does not establish that a winder extends service life or is required for longevity.
Let it stop and wind it manually You wear the watch intermittently and do not mind resetting it before use. The model’s crown position, winding direction, and restart instructions. You will need to set the time and possibly other indications again when the watch has stopped.

When a winder is useful

A winder is practical for a watch you rotate into regular use and want ready without resetting. It can also be convenient when the watch has a calendar or other indication that takes time to set, provided your manual explains how to handle those functions after the watch has been kept running.

Do not buy a winder on the assumption that every automatic movement accepts the same program. Manufacturers do not publish one universal setting for all watches. A winder that turns in the wrong direction, does not move the rotor effectively, or holds the case poorly may fail to keep the watch wound. Match the device to the movement before purchase.

When letting it stop is the better choice

If you wear the watch only occasionally and resetting it is not a burden, allowing the reserve to run down avoids buying and configuring another device. Patek Philippe’s care guidance specifically describes restarting a stopped self-winding watch with gentle crown turns, and TAG Heuer presents a winder as an option for a watch that is not worn regularly rather than a requirement.

  • ELEGANT CARBON FIBER DESIGN: Made of high-quality PU leather with a transparent acrylic window. The smooth PU leather interior reliably protects your mechanical watches from scratches. A stylish eye-catcher and the perfect presentation for your valuable watch collection.
  • IMPORTANT SIZE COMPATIBILITY (PLEASE CHECK): To ensure smooth operation and prevent motor damage, this dual watch winder is designed for watches with the following maximum dimensions: Dial diameter under 47 mm, case thickness under 28 mm, and strap circumference under 175-195 mm. It can accommodate large watches, but cannot simultaneously hold two mechanical watches with a dial diameter of 58 mm with crown. Please measure your watch before purchasing.
  • OPERATING PRINCIPLE: A watch winder serves exclusively to maintain the power reserve and simulates the natural movement of the wrist. It CANNOT wind a completely stopped watch from zero. Important: Please manually wind the crown of your watch approx 20-40 times before placing it in the winder. It CANNOT start or wind a completely stopped watch from zero. We also recommend manually checking the time once a week.
  • INTELLIGENT INTERVAL ROTATION: Programmed with pauses to prevent over-winding. Mode B: 2 min clockwise, 6 min pause, 2 min counterclockwise. Mode L: 2 min counterclockwise, 18 min pause, 2 min clockwise. (If you see the winder rotate and then stop, this is the programmed pause — NOT a malfunction. Please wait through the full pause period (6 min for Mode B, 18 min for Mode L) )You can switch the device off when not in use.(Speed: 970-2430 TPD. Automatic watches only. NOT for Quartz, Seiko Kinetic, or Citizen Eco-Drive).
  • CONSTANT POWER SUPPLY (NO BATTERY): Please note that this device does not have a built-in battery and must be permanently connected to a power source (3V~9V, 0.5A) during operation. A connection cable is included (power adapter NOT included). Multiple watch winders can be conveniently connected in series via the cable to save space and power outlets.

How to select and set up a watch winder

Because compatibility is movement-specific, start with the watch documentation rather than with a generic winder chart. The following process keeps the decision grounded in the information the manufacturer actually provides.

  1. Identify the exact reference or caliber. Record the model name, reference number, and movement number. A family name alone may cover watches with different reserves and winding systems.
  2. Read the care or instruction manual. Look for any stated winding direction, operating limits, and guidance for keeping the watch running off the wrist. If the manual does not specify a winder setting, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service channel instead of guessing.
  3. Check physical fit. The cushion should hold the watch securely without forcing the strap or bracelet. The case must not rub against the winder’s housing as it turns.
  4. Match the direction. Some movements wind in one direction, some in the other, and some accept bidirectional winding. Use only the direction supported by your movement and the setting options offered by the winder.
  5. Use the manufacturer’s rotation setting. If the manual provides a rotations-per-day or intermittent schedule, enter that value. Do not substitute a number copied from another model.
  6. Verify operation before leaving the watch unattended. Confirm that the rotor actually moves and that the watch remains running over the period specified by its manual. If it stops, remove it and troubleshoot the fit, direction, and setting before assuming the watch needs service.

A winder should be treated as an accessory for readiness, not as a maintenance device. The available manufacturer guidance does not show that continuous winding protects a movement or increases its service interval. If your priority is reducing equipment and keeping the watch at rest, manual restarting remains a sound option.

How to let an automatic watch stop safely

There is no special preservation procedure required merely because the power reserve has run down. A stopped watch is in the condition the movement reaches when its stored energy is spent. Store it in the case or location you normally use, then follow the manual when you are ready to wear it again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before restarting, identify whether the watch has simply exhausted its reserve or is showing a symptom of malfunction. If it ran normally before being set aside and stopped after a period consistent with its stated reserve, stopping is expected. If it stops repeatedly while worn, runs for substantially less time than the documented reserve, or behaves abnormally after correct winding, seek an authorized assessment.

How to restart an automatic watch that has stopped

Restart instructions differ by movement. Never treat one brand’s turn count as a universal rule.

Guidance Instruction Qualification
Patek Philippe self-winding watches Use a few gentle turns of the crown until the watch starts again. This is the manufacturer’s general care instruction for a stopped self-winding watch.
TAG Heuer mechanical watches Rotate the crown clockwise about 30–40 times, or until the second hand starts moving. The instruction is specific to TAG Heuer’s guidance; do not apply the count to another movement automatically.
Seiko 4R57 movement Follow the 4R57 manual; winding the crown may not start a stopped watch immediately. The manual’s warning means a delayed start is not, by itself, proof of damage.

A model-safe restart procedure

  1. Consult the manual first. Confirm which crown position winds the movement and whether the crown turns clockwise, counterclockwise, or in both directions for winding.
  2. Release the crown if necessary. A screw-down crown must be unscrewed according to the manual before it can be wound. Do not force a crown that will not release normally.
  3. Wind gently. Apply light, even pressure and stop at the amount specified for your model. The published examples range from a few turns to approximately 30–40 clockwise turns, demonstrating why a universal count would be misleading.
  4. Allow for a delayed start. Some movements, including the Seiko 4R57 described in its manual, may not begin immediately when you wind the crown.
  5. Set the watch only after it is running. Once the seconds hand moves, set the time and any other indications using the model’s instructions. If the watch uses a calendar, follow the manual’s restricted-time guidance before changing that display.
  6. Secure the crown again. If the watch has a screw-down crown, close it as directed so the case retains its designed protection.

Do not shake the watch deliberately

Shaking is not a safe substitute for the manufacturer’s winding procedure. A Tissot mechanical-watch manual states: “Do not deliberately shake your automatic watch to wind it; this has no effect and could damage your watch.” Use the crown instructions for the exact movement, or wear the watch normally so its rotor can wind it through ordinary wrist motion.

Troubleshoot the most common situations

The watch stopped after being off your wrist

Compare the elapsed time with the model’s documented reserve. If the watch stopped after the expected interval, restart it using the manual. No service is indicated solely because the reserve ran out.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The watch does not start immediately after winding

Check that you used the correct crown position and winding direction, then allow the period specified by the manual. The Seiko 4R57 instructions explicitly note that crown winding may not start a stopped watch immediately. If the movement still does not start after the documented procedure, stop forcing the crown and contact an authorized service channel.

The winder is running but the watch stops

Remove the watch and verify the cushion fit, the selected winding direction, and the operating program against the movement manual. A turning motor does not prove that the rotor is winding the movement. If the setting is correct and the watch still will not maintain power, have the watch assessed rather than increasing settings randomly.

The watch runs for much less than its stated reserve

Fully wind it according to the manual and observe the elapsed running time under ordinary conditions. A consistently short reserve, stopping while worn, or erratic operation is a reason to seek professional diagnosis. Do not infer a service requirement from one incomplete winding attempt.

The crown feels abnormal or will not turn

Do not force it, use tools, or continue turning against resistance. Close the crown as far as the manual permits and use the manufacturer’s official or authorized service route. Mechanical components can be damaged by force even when the original issue is minor.

Storage accessories: what they can and cannot do

A watch box or storage case can organize and protect a watch while it is off the wrist, but it does not supply movement to the rotor and therefore cannot keep an automatic watch running. If continuous operation matters, the functional accessory is a compatible winder. If readiness does not matter, a normal storage case and manual restart are sufficient for the specific watch’s care instructions.

When stopping means service may be due

A reserve running out is normal; a movement that no longer performs as specified is a different issue. Service intervals are manufacturer-specific and should be treated as guidance for the relevant brand and reference, not as a universal calendar.

Manufacturer guidance Suggested interval How to interpret it
Patek Philippe Eight to ten years The cited care page gives this interval for servicing quartz and mechanical watches; follow the current recommendation for your reference.
TAG Heuer Approximately five to six years The cited guidance describes an overhaul interval and advises earlier attention if signs of malfunction appear.

Use the official or authorized service channel for the watch when maintenance is due or a malfunction appears. Do not schedule service merely because you left the watch unworn until its reserve ended.

A practical decision checklist

  • Want the watch continuously set and ready? Choose a winder only after confirming movement compatibility and settings.
  • Comfortable resetting it before occasional wear? Let it stop and use the manual’s restart procedure.
  • Do you know the reserve? Find the exact movement or reference; brand-wide ranges are not guarantees for every model.
  • Do you know the winding instruction? Follow the model manual; do not copy a turn count from another brand.
  • Did the watch stop after its expected reserve? Restart it; stopping alone is normal.
  • Is performance abnormal? Stop experimenting with winders or forced winding and contact an authorized service provider.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming every automatic watch runs for the same number of hours. Published ranges from Patek Philippe, TAG Heuer, and CHANEL show substantial model variation.
  • Buying a winder before identifying the movement. Direction, fit, and operating settings must match the exact watch.
  • Using one universal crown-turn count. Official instructions range from a few gentle turns to about 30–40 clockwise turns, while another manual warns that a stopped movement may not start immediately.
  • Deliberately shaking the watch. Tissot warns that this has no effect and could cause damage.
  • Servicing solely because the reserve ran down. A stopped watch after its reserve is spent is behaving normally.
  • Assuming a storage box winds the movement. It stores the watch but supplies no winding energy.
  • Leaving a malfunctioning watch on a winder to mask the symptom. A winder cannot correct a movement problem; obtain a professional diagnosis when the watch will not maintain power or run as documented.

The short answer

To keep an automatic watch running while you are not wearing it, use a correctly matched watch winder configured from the watch’s own instructions. You do not have to keep it running: allowing the reserve to expire and manually restarting the watch later is also appropriate. Identify the exact model before choosing a winder or applying a winding routine, and use authorized service guidance for symptoms that go beyond an ordinary stopped reserve.
