To keep one character recognizable across an article’s AI illustrations, approve a clear portrait or character sheet first and reuse it as a character reference in every scene. Keep the character’s defining traits and the reference stable; change only the action, setting, framing, or lighting. Use a separate style reference to carry the visual treatment across images. This can reduce visual drift, but it does not guarantee identical results.
Start with an approved character reference
Generate or select an image that clearly shows the character’s defining appearance. Use it as the anchor for later generations rather than asking each prompt to recreate the character from text alone. Adobe’s Firefly reference-image tutorial demonstrates adding a second photo reference to help keep a person’s face consistent across generations. That is a photo-oriented example, not proof that every illustration model will preserve a character equally well.
Before generating the rest of the set, check that the anchor makes the identifying details easy to see. If the character will appear from different angles, a reference sheet with multiple views can give the generator more visual information to work from.

Create a short character specification for details that should remain stable. Include only the traits that matter for recognition, such as:

- Face shape and distinctive facial features
- Hair style and color
- Recognizable clothing or accessories
- Core colors or palette
Use the same names and descriptions for these traits in each prompt. Treat the specification as an editorial aid for keeping your instructions consistent, not as a guarantee that the model will follow every detail.
Reuse the character asset, then vary the scene
Attach the approved portrait or character sheet to each new generation wherever the image tool supports reference images. In Adobe’s Firefly canvas tutorial, users can save a character as an Element, create a character reference sheet with multiple angles, and reuse named Elements in later generations. The tutorial says Elements are currently available only with non-Adobe models in the demonstrated workflow; availability can change, so check the controls in the interface you are using.

Once the identity reference and character description are stable, specify what changes in the next illustration: the action, location, framing, or lighting. Changing these scene details one at a time makes it easier to spot which instruction is associated with unwanted changes to the character.
Keep character identity and image style separate
A character reference and a style reference do different jobs. The character reference helps anchor who appears in the image; a style reference guides qualities such as color, texture, and lighting. Adobe describes style references as a way to match the look and feel across generated assets in its Style reference tutorial and Firefly API documentation.

For an article series, reuse the character reference to support identity and the style reference to support visual cohesion. A style reference alone should not be treated as a character-identity lock.
Use seeds as a supporting control, not an identity lock
Adobe’s Firefly API seed documentation explains that using the same seed, prompt, and other settings can reproduce the same image and that seeds can help create similar images across API requests. If you change a scene prompt, however, the seed alone is not established as a way to preserve the same character identity. Keep the visual reference as the primary anchor when the setting or action changes.

Review the illustrations as a set
Before publication, compare the images side by side rather than judging each one in isolation. Check whether the character still reads as the same person or figure, and look for changes in facial features, hair, clothing, or palette that conflict with the approved reference. If an image has drifted, regenerate or refine it using the same reference and character description. There is no documented universal success rate for this workflow, so review the actual images rather than assuming the controls produced a perfect match.
