Start with your feeder’s notification filter, then tune motion detection and the installation. On Birdfy, open the device settings and change Notification Frequency from All Push to Birds & Squirrels or Smart Push. Add unwanted species, such as squirrels, to Do Not Disturb. If alerts are still repeating, lower motion sensitivity, lengthen cooldown, and move the camera to a shaded, stable position away from direct sun and strong airflow. Birdfy’s labels are model- and app-dependent, so other feeders may use different names.

First identify which event is creating the alert

Too many phone notifications can come from two different systems: a motion event or an artificial-intelligence identification event. A motion detector may record a clip and push an alert whenever the camera sees movement. An AI filter may then classify an animal and apply species rules. Those streams do not always share the same control.

Open one or two recent notifications and inspect the wording, thumbnail, and event details before changing settings. Look for clues such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Motion language: the alert reports movement or a detected event without naming an animal.
  • Species language: the alert names a bird, squirrel, or another recognized visitor.
  • Repeated clips during continuous activity: several alerts arrive while wind, foliage, or an animal remains in view.
  • One alert per species followed by silence: a frequency rule may already be active.

If the notification itself does not reveal the source, temporarily compare the alert with the saved clip in the feeder app. A species filter will not necessarily stop a raw motion alert, and a motion-sensitivity change will not decide which recognized species are allowed to notify you.

Birdfy: set a less aggressive notification frequency

Birdfy documents the relevant controls in its Introduction to the Birdfy App. In the Birdfy app, open the feeder’s device settings and locate Notification Frequency. The available choices and their behavior can vary by feeder model and app version.

Birdfy option Use it when What Birdfy documents
All Push You want the broadest alerting. It is the broadest choice in the documented notification-frequency list; motion detection can record a clip and send a notification when movement is detected.
Birds & Squirrels You only want alerts for those two categories. Birdfy says this sends notifications only when AI identifies birds or squirrels. AI Bird Recognition must be active for this filter.
Smart Push You want fewer species alerts rather than every qualifying event. Birdfy describes a specific bird species as generating a notification only once per hour. Its app overview also describes Smart Push as notifying when new visitors are detected; exact behavior and availability are model-dependent.
Never You do not want push notifications from that device. The option appears in Birdfy’s documented frequency choices. Confirm in your app whether recording continues while pushes are disabled.

When Birds & Squirrels is the right filter

This setting is a practical middle ground when insects, people, or general movement are creating noise but you still want recognized bird and squirrel visits. It depends on the feeder’s AI recognition service: if recognition is disabled, unavailable, or unable to classify the event, the filter cannot make a reliable species decision. Check that AI Bird Recognition is enabled before troubleshooting the filter itself.

It is also useful to distinguish what this choice does not promise. It does not mean that every movement is ignored by the camera, nor does it guarantee that every bird will be identified correctly. It changes which events are eligible for a push notification. Review the event history after enabling it so you can see whether the camera continues saving clips that simply do not interrupt your phone.

When Smart Push is preferable

Smart Push is designed for people who want a quieter stream without losing every species alert. Birdfy’s once-per-hour description applies to a particular species, not to all activity combined and not to a scientific measurement. A feeder may still record additional events even when it does not send another phone alert. Verify the behavior shown by your model’s app, especially if several species visit at once.

For example, repeated visits from one cardinal may be grouped by the documented hourly rule, while a newly recognized finch can still produce its own notification. An unidentified motion event may also follow a different path. Check the label on each alert before concluding that Smart Push has failed.

When Never is appropriate

Use Never during meetings, overnight, or a period when you want to review clips manually. Because notification suppression and recording are separate functions on many cameras, do not assume that Never deletes, disables, or stops event recording. Check the device’s event list after selecting it.

Mute or prioritize individual species

Frequency controls decide how often the app can notify; species lists decide which recognized visitors matter to you. Birdfy’s FAQ & Troubleshooting gives squirrels as an example of a species that can be muted.

The built-in solar panel and 9000mAh battery keep the bird-watching camera running day and night, all year round — even through long winter months with less sun. Choose from four easy mounting options (pole, pole-top, wall, or tree) to place it exactly where the birds love to gather in your yard.

Do Not Disturb for unwanted tags

  1. Open the feeder’s species or notification settings.
  2. Add the unwanted species tag to Do Not Disturb. For example, add squirrel if squirrel identifications are the main source of alerts.
  3. Save the change, then watch a later event to confirm that the tag is no longer producing a push notification.

The list applies to recognized tags. It does not necessarily block an unidentified motion event, a person walking past the camera, or movement caused by weather. If those events remain, address motion sensitivity and placement separately.

Must Push for favorites

Birdfy also documents Must Push, which can whitelist favorite species, including when Smart Push is enabled. Use it for a bird you never want to miss while keeping less important species quiet. If a species appears in both a mute list and a priority list, follow the precedence shown by the current app rather than assuming which rule wins.

Think of these lists as a second layer after frequency selection. A favorite-species rule does not make a loose feeder or windy branch stable, and a mute rule cannot identify movement that the AI never labels. Apply the list only after confirming that the alert actually contains the species tag you want to control.

Reduce repeated motion-triggered alerts

When the same visitor or environmental movement creates a stream of clips, adjust the motion controls instead of changing species preferences. Birdfy states that lower sensitivity reduces the chance of capturing minor movement. It also states that a longer cooldown leaves a pause before another recording; during that cooldown, recording pauses even if movement continues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the feeder’s device settings and find Motion Sensitivity or an equivalent control.
  2. Lower sensitivity one increment, save, and observe the next period of activity. A large reduction can miss a small bird at the edge of the frame, so change it gradually.
  3. Find Cooldown, event interval, or the equivalent pause control.
  4. Increase the cooldown to create more separation between clips and alerts. The trade-off is that a second visitor arriving during the pause may not generate an immediate new recording.
  5. Recheck the alert source. If notifications name species despite the motion adjustment, combine the motion change with a species-frequency rule rather than continuing to lower sensitivity.

These controls change capture behavior as well as phone noise. A lower sensitivity or longer cooldown can reduce the number of recordings available for later review, so choose the smallest change that solves the problem.

How sensitivity and cooldown differ

Sensitivity changes the threshold for starting an event. It is the better first move when leaves, shadows, or tiny movements trigger clips. Cooldown changes what happens after an event has already started. It is the better move when one continuous disturbance produces a sequence of recordings. Using both at once can make the result difficult to diagnose, so change one control, check the next normal activity period, and then decide whether a second adjustment is needed.

Remove environmental false triggers

Birdfy’s troubleshooting guidance recommends a shaded, stable installation away from direct sunlight and strong airflow such as a fan or vent. Heat, shifting light, moving leaves, and air currents can make a camera detect movement even when no bird is present.

Placement checklist

  • Mount the feeder on a rigid support that does not sway when the feeder is touched.
  • Keep the lens and motion-sensing area out of direct sun where the camera can experience rapid brightness or heat changes.
  • Move the unit away from fans, vents, air-conditioning outlets, and other strong airflow.
  • Remove or relocate loose foliage, hanging decorations, and reflective objects that move in the camera’s view.
  • Where the hardware allows adjustment, tighten the framing around the feeder so less sky, road, or moving vegetation occupies the detection area. This is a practical positioning measure; Birdfy’s published troubleshooting advice specifically supports shade, stability, and avoiding airflow.

After relocating the unit, allow enough normal activity to judge the result rather than reacting to a single quiet or busy moment. Keep a note of the old and new position if you need to reverse the change.

Placement problems can imitate an app problem. If alerts cluster when a fan turns on, sunlight crosses the lens, or the feeder sways, correct that physical condition before selecting the most restrictive notification mode. Otherwise you may hide useful bird visits while the trigger remains in place.

Match the fix to the symptom

What you observe First control to try Why
Alerts name squirrels, but you mainly want birds. Do Not Disturb for the squirrel species tag. It targets the unwanted recognized category without changing every motion event.
Many different species alerts arrive during a busy visit. Smart Push. Birdfy describes limiting notifications for a particular species to once per hour.
Alerts arrive for leaves, shadows, or minor movement. Lower motion sensitivity. Birdfy says lower sensitivity reduces minor-motion captures.
Several clips arrive while the same movement continues. Increase cooldown. Birdfy says recording pauses during the cooldown even if movement continues.
Alerts occur when a fan or vent is running. Move the feeder away from strong airflow. Birdfy identifies airflow as an environmental source of false motion triggers.
You want no phone interruptions for a period. Never or the app’s schedule equivalent. Never is listed among Birdfy’s notification-frequency choices; confirm recording behavior in your model.

What to do if the filter does not seem to work

The Birds & Squirrels choice is missing

Check whether AI Bird Recognition is enabled and whether your model supports that category filter. Birdfy’s documentation does not establish that every feeder exposes identical menus. Consult the current model-specific help rather than assuming that an option from another device should appear.

Species are muted but motion alerts continue

This usually indicates that the remaining notifications are motion events rather than species-tag alerts. Review the notification wording and adjust sensitivity, cooldown, or placement. A species list cannot classify or mute movement that never receives an AI species tag.

Smart Push still produces more alerts than expected

Birdfy’s once-per-hour description is for a particular species. It is not a promise of one alert per hour for the entire feeder. Different species, unidentified events, or model-specific behavior can produce additional notifications. Confirm which category each alert belongs to and check the current app explanation for your model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The feeder records clips even after alerts stop

Notification frequency controls how often your phone is interrupted; they do not necessarily disable event recording. Review the app’s event history to distinguish a quieter notification stream from a change in camera capture.

Alerts increase after moving the feeder

Recheck stability, shade, and airflow at the new position. A branch, reflective surface, or moving background may now occupy more of the frame. Restore the previous position if necessary, then make one placement change at a time so you can identify the cause.

Applying the same approach to another feeder brand

Birdfy’s menu names are not universal. For another manufacturer, look in the current app documentation for four kinds of controls:

  • Notification frequency or event filters: choices that distinguish all events, recognized birds, selected animals, new visitors, or no pushes.
  • Species rules: mute, ignore, do-not-disturb, favorite, priority, or whitelist lists.
  • Motion sensitivity: a threshold that determines how much movement starts an event.
  • Cooldown or event interval: a pause that limits repeated recordings and alerts.

Also check whether the app separates motion notifications from AI identification notifications. The same strategy still applies: identify the event source, filter categories, limit repeats, and then correct the physical cause. Do not assume a setting called Smart, Intelligent, or AI has the same once-per-hour behavior documented for Birdfy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test changes without losing useful visits

Make one adjustment at a time and keep the original value in a note or screenshot. Start with the least disruptive change: a species mute for one unwanted category, or a small sensitivity reduction for obvious environmental movement. Check both the phone notifications and the saved event list after normal feeder activity.

If the result is still noisy, apply the next control in this order:

  1. Choose an appropriate notification-frequency filter.
  2. Mute or prioritize species tags.
  3. Lower motion sensitivity slightly.
  4. Lengthen cooldown.
  5. Correct shade, stability, airflow, and framing.

This order preserves more recordings than immediately selecting Never or using an extreme sensitivity setting. It also makes it easier to tell whether the problem came from an AI category or from the camera’s motion detector.

Keep a simple troubleshooting record

Write down the setting, the installation change, and the type of alert you saw afterward. Note whether the event named a species, whether movement continued in the clip, and whether the event was saved without a push. This small record prevents you from repeatedly changing the same control and helps separate a notification rule from a camera-capture issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Optional hardware context

A camera-equipped feeder such as Birdfy Feeder 2 combines a feeder camera, AI identification, and app alerts, so it illustrates why notification controls and motion controls can behave differently. The settings above are useful for existing equipment; changing notification rules and placement does not require buying a new feeder. Product availability, pricing, and supported controls can change, so verify the specifications for the exact model you own.

A quiet-notification setup in one pass

For a Birdfy feeder, enable AI Bird Recognition if you want species filtering, choose Birds & Squirrels when those are the only categories you need, or choose Smart Push when repeated species alerts are the main problem. Put unwanted tags in Do Not Disturb and favorites in Must Push. If the remaining alerts are motion-driven, lower sensitivity and increase cooldown. Finally, keep the feeder shaded and rigid, away from direct sun and strong airflow. For any other brand, translate those actions to the equivalent controls in its current app and confirm whether notification suppression changes recording.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I still get alerts after adding squirrels to Do Not Disturb?

Do Not Disturb targets recognized squirrel tags. A remaining alert may be a raw motion event, an unidentified animal, a person, or weather-related movement. Check the notification wording and then adjust motion sensitivity, cooldown, or placement.

Does Birdfy Smart Push allow only one notification per hour total?

No. Birdfy describes the limit as once per hour for a particular bird species. Different species, new visitors, unidentified events, or model-specific rules can produce additional alerts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will lowering motion sensitivity stop all recordings?

It reduces the chance of capturing minor movement, but it can also miss a small bird at the edge of the frame. Lower it gradually and compare both notifications and saved clips.

Does choosing Never stop the camera from recording?

Not necessarily. Never is a notification-frequency option. Push suppression and event recording can be separate, so review the event list for your exact model.

Why is Birds & Squirrels missing from my Birdfy app?

Confirm that AI Bird Recognition is active and that your feeder model and app version support the filter. Birdfy does not document identical menus for every model.

How can I mute most species but always hear about one favorite bird?

Use the available species mute or Do Not Disturb list for unwanted tags, then add the favorite to Must Push if your model provides it. Check the app’s rule precedence if a species appears in both lists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What installation location creates fewer false alerts?

Use a shaded, stable mount away from direct sunlight and strong airflow from fans or vents. Also inspect the frame for moving leaves, hanging objects, or reflective surfaces.

Are Birdfy’s settings the same on every AI feeder?

No. All Push, Birds & Squirrels, Smart Push, Never, Do Not Disturb, and Must Push are Birdfy labels. Other brands may offer analogous controls under different names and with different behavior.

The Bottom Line

Start by identifying whether the alert is motion-based or species-based. On Birdfy, try Birds & Squirrels, Smart Push, or a species mute before changing capture settings. For repeated motion alerts, lower sensitivity, lengthen cooldown, and install the feeder in a shaded, stable spot away from airflow. Verify each change in both notifications and saved clips, because quieter pushes do not always mean fewer recordings.
