AI workloads stay portable when you separate what belongs in the application from what belongs to a provider’s GPU platform. Package frameworks, libraries, serving code and configuration in reproducible containers; describe jobs through a common scheduler interface where practical; and verify every destination’s GPU, driver, runtime, orchestration, storage and network assumptions.
A container image or Kubernetes manifest is only part of the move. A provider change is a tested deployment and data migration. Hardware architecture, GPU memory, interconnect topology, driver support, scheduler behavior and data-transfer terms can all change the result.
What portability means for an AI workload
“Portable” can describe several different outcomes. Define the outcome before choosing tools, because moving a stateless inference service is materially easier than resuming a distributed training run with its optimizer state intact.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRebuilding an inference service
The narrowest goal is to start the same service on another provider and preserve API behavior. The portable unit normally includes source code, a pinned container image, model weights, runtime configuration, secrets, health checks and deployment definitions. You still need to confirm that the destination GPU and driver support the framework and precision modes used by the service.

Resuming a training job
Training portability includes checkpoints, optimizer state, random seeds, data-shard assignments, distributed-training configuration and the ability to recreate the required GPU topology. A container can reproduce user-space software, but it cannot make a destination with insufficient memory or a different interconnect behave like the original cluster.
Reproducing a complete pipeline
The broadest definition moves data ingestion, preprocessing, training, evaluation, model registration, deployment and observability. List every artifact that must move: source, image, model weights, datasets, checkpoints, configuration, secrets, certificates, job metadata and audit records. State which system remains authoritative during a migration and how the destination will be recovered if the transfer is interrupted.
The portability boundary: what you control and what the provider controls
Portability is layered. Your team can make application and user-space software reproducible; the provider still supplies the host GPU stack and much of the operational environment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Layer | What can usually be packaged or declared | What must be validated at each provider |
|---|---|---|
| Application | Source, model-serving code, dependencies and configuration | External services, identity integration and provider-specific endpoints |
| Container user space | Framework, CUDA user-space libraries, Python packages, serving binaries and image digest | Driver compatibility, supported GPU architecture and container runtime behavior |
| Orchestration | Standard Kubernetes resources or scheduler submissions where APIs match | Cluster version, admission policies, GPU enablement, storage classes, networking and autoscaling |
| Hardware | Minimum requirements and placement constraints | GPU model, memory, precision features, topology, interconnect and capacity |
| Data layer | Transfer procedures, manifests, checksums and retention policy | Storage performance, locality, transfer time, encryption and egress terms |
| Operations | Monitoring definitions, runbooks and acceptance tests | Provider support model, observability access, security controls and failure behavior |
This boundary explains why “push the image and run it elsewhere” is not a portability plan. The image carries user-space software, not the host driver, GPU device plugin, cluster policy, storage implementation or network path.
Use Kubernetes as an interface, not as a promise of identical GPU platforms
Kubernetes exposes GPUs as schedulable resources, giving workloads a common way to request accelerator capacity. Cluster administrators still install the hardware-vendor driver and the corresponding device plugin on GPU nodes. The node therefore remains dependent on its vendor, operating system and configuration. The Kubernetes documentation describes this scheduling model at Schedule GPUs.
Keep provider-specific settings in a small layer
Write workload definitions with standard Kubernetes objects where possible, then isolate provider-specific values in a documented overlay. Typical differences include:
- GPU node labels, taints, tolerations and selectors.
- Storage classes, volume types and access modes.
- Network annotations, load-balancer behavior and ingress integration.
- Secret and identity integrations.
- Autoscaling limits, capacity reservations and disruption policies.
- Observability agents and provider-specific metrics endpoints.
A shared manifest helps only when the destination implements the APIs and semantics your workload needs. Treat every overlay as an explicit portability exception, not as hidden configuration.

Use NVIDIA GPU Operator only within its supported matrix
NVIDIA GPU Operator can automate much of the GPU software stack on supported bare-metal and GPU virtual-machine deployments. NVIDIA publishes validated platforms, operating systems, runtimes and deployment combinations in its GPU Operator platform support matrix. Select the exact destination configuration from that matrix; do not assume that two managed Kubernetes services are interchangeable because both advertise NVIDIA GPUs.
The operator can be a portability aid when the same installation pattern is supported across environments, but it does not remove the need to check driver branches, Kubernetes versions, container runtime behavior, node images and provider restrictions. Record the operator version and its configuration alongside the workload image digest.
GKE illustrates the conditional nature of portability
Google’s GKE GPU Operator guide identifies multi-cloud consistency as a possible reason to use the operator while also documenting GKE-specific limitations. Use that combination as a pattern: a shared component can reduce operational differences, yet each provider still requires a configuration review and a test run.
Make containers reproducible without hiding host requirements
Pin every user-space dependency that affects correctness or performance:

- CUDA user-space libraries and communication libraries.
- Python packages, native extensions and compiler-built components.
- Model-serving software and plugins.
- Base image version and image digest.
Store images in a registry reachable from each target environment, or define a controlled replication process. Record the digest rather than relying on a mutable tag. Avoid installing libraries manually on one provider’s virtual machine; that creates an undocumented dependency that will not follow the image.
Containers do not include the host kernel, GPU driver or device plugin. Before production use, confirm that the destination driver supports the CUDA and framework versions in the image, that the GPU architecture is supported, and that the runtime exposes the devices with the expected permissions. NVIDIA’s cloud-native overview and the Kubernetes GPU scheduling documentation describe this division between containerized user space and host enablement.
Record a destination compatibility contract
Create a per-provider record before deployment. At minimum, capture:

- GPU Operator version and installation mode, if used.
- Scheduler type, queue or namespace policy, quotas and preemption behavior.
- Storage performance characteristics, image distribution path and data locality.
- Network path, service exposure, encryption controls and observability access.
Keep this record under version control and tie it to the workload release. A provider can change a node image or support matrix without changing your application code.
Account for GPU and topology differences
A workload may start on several GPU models yet deliver different throughput, latency or failure behavior. GPU memory can determine whether a model loads at all. Precision instructions can change supported kernels. Multi-GPU training can depend on peer-to-peer bandwidth, interconnect type, NUMA placement and the number of GPUs available on one host.
Define minimum hardware requirements
Express requirements as testable constraints: minimum memory per GPU, number of GPUs per process group, required precision, expected interconnect and maximum acceptable host-to-device transfer overhead. Use node selectors or equivalent placement rules only after confirming that the destination exposes the required labels and resources.
Benchmark the real workload
Run representative inference requests or a bounded training step on each candidate GPU. Measure correctness, throughput, latency, memory consumption, scaling efficiency and checkpoint time. Do not infer equivalent performance or cost from a shared CUDA interface. A common API indicates software compatibility, not equal economics or speed.
Move models, data and checkpoints deliberately
Migration time is often dominated by artifacts rather than compute. Model weights, training data, checkpoints and container layers can be large enough to determine the schedule and cost of a provider move.
Choose an authoritative copy
Decide whether the source or destination is authoritative during transfer. Define a cutover point, write-freeze or incremental synchronization method, and a rollback path. For training, specify which checkpoint is the restart point and how incomplete or duplicate uploads are detected.
Verify integrity and security
Use manifests and checksums for every transferred object. Define encryption in transit and at rest, key ownership, access controls, retention and deletion of temporary copies. Confirm that the destination identity system can retrieve the data without embedding provider-specific credentials in the image.

Model transfer time and exit cost
Compare storage throughput, network path, regional locality and current egress terms at decision time. Prices, inventory, regions and transfer policies change; no fixed provider ranking or current price comparison can be inferred from a generic portability design. Include the cost of returning data and rebuilding caches when estimating exit effort.
Choose a scheduler model consciously
Kubernetes is commonly used for cloud-native services and jobs. Large-scale and high-performance-computing environments may use Slurm, sometimes alongside Kubernetes. Scheduler semantics affect queueing, gang scheduling, retries, priorities, quotas, preemption, node allocation and how failures are reported.
Recommended Free Tools
NVIDIA’s Slinky project describes Slurm workload management integrated with Kubernetes in GPU environments. Treat it as an option to evaluate, not as proof that arbitrary Slurm jobs and Kubernetes workloads are interchangeable. Test the job specification, resource requests, environment propagation, checkpoint handling and retry behavior on the target platform.
A repeatable portability acceptance test
Claim portability only after the same release passes a defined acceptance run on each destination.
- Freeze the release. Record source revision, container image digest, framework and CUDA user-space versions, model or dataset versions, configuration and secrets references.
- Verify the platform contract. Record the GPU model, driver, operating system, runtime, Kubernetes release, GPU Operator version and scheduler settings. Confirm that the combination is supported by the relevant vendor documentation.
- Run a device smoke test. Confirm that the process sees the expected number of GPUs, reports the intended memory and can execute a representative framework operation.
- Run representative work. Execute production-like inference traffic or a bounded training interval. Capture correctness, throughput, latency, memory and, for distributed jobs, scaling and interconnect behavior.
- Restore state. Load a real checkpoint or model artifact from the migration path and verify that outputs, optimizer state or serving behavior meet the defined criteria.
- Exercise failure and retry. Interrupt a worker or pod, test rescheduling, and verify that the job or service recovers without corrupting checkpoints or duplicating irreversible side effects.
- Measure migration operations. Time image distribution, data transfer, startup, checkpoint upload and rollback. Record network and storage errors and the manual actions required.
- Apply thresholds. Set explicit limits for functional correctness, performance, memory headroom, recovery time and migration duration. A deployment that starts but misses these limits is not portable for your stated purpose.
Store the results with the release record. Re-run the acceptance test after a GPU generation change, driver update, operator update, Kubernetes upgrade or significant framework change.
Compare providers on the dimensions that affect portability
| Decision area | Questions to answer | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| Accelerator fit | Does the provider offer the required GPU memory, precision features, topology and capacity? | Exact GPU model, host layout, interconnect and tested workload results |
| Software support | Are the driver, CUDA, framework, operating system, runtime and operator versions supported together? | Vendor support matrix and destination compatibility record |
| Scheduling | Will Kubernetes, Slurm or a mixed model preserve queueing, placement, retry and quota behavior? | Translated manifests, job tests and failure-run results |
| Data movement | How quickly and securely can images, weights, datasets and checkpoints move? | Measured transfer time, storage tests, integrity checks and current egress terms |
| Operations | Can the team access logs, metrics, alerts, node diagnostics and support when a GPU job fails? | Observability integration, security controls, support process and runbook |
| Economics and exit | What is the total cost at representative throughput, including idle time, reservations, transfer and a return move? | Current provider quotations, utilization model and documented exit procedure |
Regional availability, inventory, capacity guarantees, prices and egress charges require live checks with each provider. They are not stable characteristics of a generic Kubernetes or CUDA interface.
Common portability failures and fixes
The image starts but cannot see a GPU
Usually the destination node lacks the required driver or device plugin, or the runtime and permissions are not configured. Check node enablement, device-plugin health, runtime settings and the provider’s supported installation path before changing application code.

The framework reports an unsupported CUDA or driver combination
Compare the image’s user-space CUDA and framework versions with the destination driver branch and the vendor support matrix. Rebuild against a supported combination or select a compatible node image; do not assume that a newer host driver makes every older or newer user-space stack valid.
The model fits on one provider but runs out of memory on another
Verify actual accelerator memory, reserved overhead, precision mode and batch size. Select a GPU with sufficient headroom, adjust placement or change the workload configuration only after measuring the effect on correctness and performance.
Distributed training is slow or unstable
Inspect GPU topology, interconnect bandwidth, NUMA placement, collective-communication support and cross-host network behavior. A job that passes a single-GPU smoke test can still fail its scaling requirement.
Deployment manifests require extensive edits
Move provider-specific node labels, storage classes, network annotations and secret integrations into a small, reviewed overlay. If the overlay becomes larger than the workload definition, reconsider whether the target platforms truly implement the same operational contract.
Checkpoint restore succeeds but results differ
Check framework and kernel versions, precision settings, random seeds, data ordering, distributed rank layout and checkpoint completeness. Define an acceptable reproducibility envelope rather than assuming bit-for-bit identity across GPU generations.
Implementation blueprint for a portable platform
- Define the portability unit and success criteria. Decide whether the goal is service redeployment, checkpointed training resumption or full-pipeline reproduction. Set correctness, performance, recovery and migration-time thresholds.
- Create a release manifest. Include image digest, source revision, framework and CUDA versions, model and data identifiers, configuration, required GPU characteristics, scheduler settings and checkpoint locations.
- Build a provider compatibility catalog. Track each destination’s GPU, driver, operating system, runtime, Kubernetes release, operator support, scheduler, storage and network assumptions.
- Separate common declarations from overlays. Keep standard workload resources common; isolate selectors, tolerations, storage, networking, identity and autoscaling differences.
- Automate the acceptance run. Run device checks, representative work, checkpoint restore, failure recovery and measurement on every supported destination.
- Practice data migration and rollback. Transfer a realistic dataset and image set, verify checksums, measure elapsed time and rehearse a cutover back to the source.
- Review changes continuously. Revalidate after hardware, driver, framework, operator, Kubernetes, scheduler or provider-image changes.
Portability checklist
- Portable unit and acceptance thresholds are written down.
- Images use immutable digests and all user-space dependencies are pinned.
- Destination GPU, memory, architecture and topology meet explicit requirements.
- Driver, CUDA, framework, operating system, runtime and operator versions are supported together.
- Kubernetes device plugins or equivalent scheduler integration are installed and tested.
- Provider-specific scheduling, storage, network and identity settings are isolated and documented.
- Model, dataset, checkpoint and image transfer paths have integrity, encryption, retention and rollback procedures.
- Representative inference or training, checkpoint restore and failure recovery have passed on the target.
- Measured throughput, latency, memory, startup and migration time meet defined limits.
- Current capacity, regional availability, pricing, egress and support terms have been verified before a commitment.
Final guidance
The most durable portability strategy is layered: reproducible containers for user space, a standard orchestration interface where it genuinely fits, and an explicit compatibility contract for every provider’s GPU platform. Kubernetes and NVIDIA GPU Operator can reduce operational differences, but neither makes GPU hardware, drivers, topology, storage or network behavior provider-independent.
Plan a provider move as an engineering exercise with measurements, data handling and rollback. When the same pinned release passes hardware, software, scheduler, performance and recovery tests on the destination, you have demonstrated portability for a defined workload—not merely assumed it from a shared image format.
