Keep an AI voice conversation private by treating privacy as several separate controls, not one switch. Check what the microphone can hear, whether audio is transmitted or retained, whether a transcript or chat history is saved, whether content can improve models, whether people may review it, and how each data type is deleted. Those settings differ by assistant, account, plan, workspace, device, and region.
The safest practical approach is to avoid saying secrets, inspect every relevant control before use, mute the hardware when voice input is unnecessary, review stored activity afterward, and delete recordings, transcripts, chats, and memories separately. Vendor documentation describes intended policies and controls; it is not an independent audit or a universal guarantee.
What “private” means in an AI voice chat
A spoken prompt becomes information that an assistant may process on its servers. Privacy therefore has multiple layers:

- Transmission: what leaves the phone, computer, speaker, or headset and is sent to the provider.
- Raw audio retention: whether the sound file is stored, for how long, and whether you can opt out.
- Transcripts and chat history: the text created from your speech can remain even when an audio clip is deleted.
- Model improvement: whether conversations may be used to improve models or services. This is not the same as deletion.
- Human access: whether employees or contractors can review transcripts, clips, or other metadata for safety, quality, or improvement.
- Deletion: which controls remove data, when deletion occurs, and what security, legal, safety, backup, or previously disassociated-data exceptions apply.
Changing one layer does not automatically change the others. For example, disabling model improvement can leave a chat in your history, and deleting a transcript cannot undo information already heard by people nearby.

Before you speak: a privacy checklist
Separate sensitive information from ordinary requests
Do not dictate passwords, one-time codes, bank-account numbers, medical identifiers, confidential source material, trade secrets, or another person’s private information. A voice prompt is still a disclosure to the service and may also be audible to anyone nearby. If an answer requires sensitive facts, type a redacted version or use an approved private system instead.
Inspect each account control
Before a sensitive session, look for all of these categories rather than assuming one privacy toggle covers them:
- Chat, activity, or conversation history.
- Model-improvement, training, or product-improvement sharing.
- Audio and video sharing, including clips used for quality review.
- Memory, personalization, and connected-app access.
- Automatic deletion periods.
- Workspace or administrator retention rules if the account belongs to an employer or school.
Control the room and the device
Use a physical microphone-mute switch, a compatible headset mute control, or disable voice access when you are not actively speaking. This reduces the chance of a new utterance being captured, but it cannot retract audio already transmitted and does not change provider-side retention. A decorative microphone cover does not put the microphone into a hardware-off state.

Protect other people
Tell people in the room when a voice assistant is active. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice states: “Get permission before recording people in a Live chat, or using their faces or voices in Gemini.” That is vendor guidance, not a substitute for local recording and privacy laws.
ChatGPT Voice: training, audio, history, and deletion are different
Open the ChatGPT app or website and go to Settings → Data controls. The labels and availability can vary by account and managed workspace.
Turn off model improvement without confusing it with deletion
OpenAI says that turning off Improve the model for everyone prevents new conversations from being used to train its models while leaving those conversations in chat history. You must delete the chat separately if you want it removed from your visible history and placed into the deletion process. If you submit feedback on a response, OpenAI’s Data Controls guidance says the entire associated conversation may be used to train models even after you opted out, so treat feedback as a separate exception.
Understand Standard Voice audio
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Voice help documentation says, “With Standard, audio is transcribed before ChatGPT generates a response.” It also says Standard Voice audio is deleted after transcription unless you chose to share audio for training. The transcript can still be retained as part of the chat, so deleting or preventing audio retention does not automatically remove the text record.

Delete a voice chat correctly
- Open your chat history and select the conversation that contains the voice session.
- Use the chat’s delete command rather than merely archiving it.
- Review Data controls for any separate audio/video sharing choice and turn it off if you do not want future clips shared for improvement.
- Check that the conversation no longer appears in history, then review any account-level activity or memory features separately.
OpenAI says deleting a chat removes associated audio and video within 30 days under normal circumstances. The stated exceptions include security or safety obligations, legal requirements, and data that was previously disassociated from the account and used for training. Archiving is not deletion: “Archiving only removes the chat from your sidebar; it does not delete the chat or its associated audio or video clips.”
Managed accounts need an administrator check
Business, school, and other managed workspaces can apply organizational retention and access policies. A personal-account setting may not override those rules. Ask the workspace administrator which chats, transcripts, recordings, and feedback data are retained and who can access them.
Gemini Apps and Gemini Live: check activity, audio/video, and memory separately
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice, last updated June 29, 2026, says signed-in use can involve spoken prompts, Gemini Live audio, video and screen shares, transcripts, feedback, generated content, connected-app context, browser and device information, and other interaction data.
Review Gemini Apps Activity
Open Gemini Apps Activity from your Google account controls. There you can review and delete activity, choose an auto-delete period where offered, and manage whether activity helps improve services. Deleting an activity item addresses the record covered by that activity control; it does not necessarily remove a connected-app copy, a saved memory, or a device-level recording.

Google provides a distinct control for using audio and Gemini Live video or screen shares to improve services. Turning that setting off does not stop Gemini from using future audio or video to respond to you or to help make the service safe. It limits improvement use, not the basic processing required to provide the conversation.
Check memory and personalization
Gemini memory or personalization is another independent setting. A conversation can remain useful to the service through saved activity, connected-app context, or memory even when a different improvement control is disabled. Review saved memories and remove items that should no longer influence future responses.
Account and region qualifications
Google says settings can differ for work or school accounts, products, devices, and regions. Turning off Keep Activity does not automatically turn off separate services or erase every category of information. Use the controls shown for the specific signed-in account rather than relying on instructions for a different edition.

Accidental activation in Gemini Live
Google says Gemini may activate unintentionally and treat the captured input as a normal activation. Accidental audio or video may therefore enter the same processing path as an intentional request, depending on your settings. Use the device’s mute control when you are not using Live, keep sensitive discussions away from an active microphone, and review activity after an unexpected activation.

Alexa: “do not save recordings” still leaves a transcript period
Amazon’s Alexa privacy guidance describes controls in the Alexa app for saving, reviewing, deleting, and automatically deleting voice recordings. The exact menu names and availability can vary by device and region.
Choose whether recordings are saved
In the Alexa app, open the privacy settings for voice history and choose the option not to save voice recordings if it is available to your account. Amazon says recordings are automatically deleted after Alexa processes the request under that choice. This concerns the audio recording, not necessarily every text or metadata record created while fulfilling the request.
Know the transcript distinction
Amazon’s page says that when you choose not to save voice recordings, transcripts remain reviewable for 30 days before automatic deletion begins. Therefore, “no saved recording” does not mean “no retained representation.” Review the transcript list and use the delete controls when you need earlier removal.
Review and delete existing history
- Open the Alexa app’s privacy or voice-history view.
- Filter the history by date or device and open individual entries when you need to verify what was captured.
- Delete recordings and associated entries using the available controls.
- Set an automatic-deletion interval and periodically confirm that it is still enabled.
Amazon also documents voice deletion commands, including “Alexa, delete everything I’ve said.” Treat that as a convenience command within the vendor’s documented behavior, not as proof that every copy in every system disappears instantly.

Google’s Safety Center says Assistant sends audio to Google servers after activation to fulfill a request and that the recording may include a few seconds before activation. A sound resembling “Hey Google” can therefore cause an unintended capture.
Check the audio-saving setting
Google says Assistant audio recordings are not saved on its servers by default. The relevant choice is under Web & App Activity’s Include voice and audio activity control. Review the setting for the Google account actually used by the device; changing a different account will not protect this one.

Separate saved audio from text review
Google’s documentation separately explains that human reviewers, including third parties, may read, annotate, and process query text and related information. Portions of saved audio may also be reviewed. Disabling saved audio does not imply that the text needed to answer a request is never processed or reviewed under applicable policies.
Use My Activity for cleanup
Open Google My Activity to inspect Assistant entries, delete individual items or date ranges, and configure auto-delete where offered. Also check device activity and connected services if the request triggered an action outside Assistant’s own history.
Can someone listen to an AI voice chat?
Possibly, depending on the product, settings, account, and data category. “Listen” can mean a person reviewing raw audio, a person reading a transcript, or an administrator accessing a managed workspace. Vendor documentation describes these possibilities for safety, quality, support, or service improvement; it does not establish that every conversation is manually reviewed.
- ChatGPT Voice: OpenAI says teams may review audio or video clips when you choose to share them to improve model behavior. Feedback can also make the entire associated conversation eligible for training use, even after opting out.
- Gemini: Google’s controls distinguish service improvement from the processing needed to answer and keep the service safe. Audio, video, screenshares, transcripts, feedback, and connected-app context can have different handling.
- Google Assistant: Google describes human review of query text and related information and possible review of portions of saved audio.
- Alexa: Amazon’s documented controls focus on recording storage, deletion, and transcripts; review the current privacy notice for your device and region.
For a work or school account, an administrator may have additional access or retention authority. Ask for the organization’s policy before discussing confidential material.
Does turning off chat history stop AI training?
Not necessarily. The terms are product-specific and may refer to different systems. OpenAI explicitly separates its model-improvement control from chat deletion: turning off Improve the model for everyone stops new conversations from being used to train models while leaving chats in history. Google separates Gemini activity retention, audio/video improvement, and memory. A history setting can reduce what appears in your account without changing an independent improvement or safety-processing setting.
Read the control’s description literally. Look for the data type covered, whether the change applies only to future conversations, and any feedback, safety, legal, or previously disassociated-data exceptions.
How to delete AI voice recordings and related data
Use a category-by-category deletion pass
- Identify the assistant and account. Note the device, app, signed-in account, workspace status, and approximate conversation time.
- Delete the conversation or activity item. Use the assistant’s history page, not just an archive or sidebar-hide command.
- Delete raw audio or video. Some services expose recordings separately from chats or activity.
- Remove transcripts. A text transcript can survive an audio deletion or have its own automatic-deletion schedule.
- Clear saved memories and personalization. Delete facts retained for future responses.
- Review connected apps and files. Remove copies created in cloud storage, calendars, note apps, or developer tools.
- Confirm automatic deletion. Set the shortest practical period and verify the setting after account or app updates.
Understand timing and exceptions
Deletion requests are not necessarily instantaneous. OpenAI documents a normal period of up to 30 days for deleting a deleted chat and its associated audio/video, subject to security, safety, legal, and previously disassociated training-data exceptions. Amazon documents a 30-day transcript review period when recordings are not saved. These are product-specific statements, not an industry-wide retention standard.

Consumer apps versus developer APIs
Do not apply developer documentation to an ordinary consumer app. Google’s Gemini Developer API documentation says Live API conversation state can be retained for up to 24 hours when a session handle is generated. File API uploads and cached context have separate storage behavior. Those details describe developer integrations, not a promise about Gemini Apps or Gemini Live used through a consumer account.
If you build an application, inventory every object separately: live-session state, uploaded files, cached context, application logs, provider logs, and your own database. Set expiration and deletion policies in each system, and tell users what your application—not merely the underlying model provider—retains.

Common mistakes and what to do instead
“I turned off training, so the recording is gone.”
Training opt-out and deletion are different. Delete the chat or activity, then remove audio, transcripts, and memories through their separate controls.
“I archived the chat, so nobody can access it.”
Archiving usually changes display, not retention. OpenAI explicitly says archiving does not delete a chat or its associated clips.
“The microphone cover makes the device private.”
A cover may block sound physically, but it does not change a microphone’s electronic state or provider retention. Use a hardware mute switch or disable voice access, and still delete data already sent.
“No saved audio means no record exists.”
Transcripts, activity entries, memories, logs, or connected-app copies may remain. Check every category your assistant exposes.

Consumer and developer products have different contracts and storage paths. Apply API retention numbers only to the API integration documented for them.
A practical privacy routine
Before speaking
- Confirm the signed-in account and whether it is managed by an employer or school.
- Check history, improvement/training, audio/video sharing, memory, connected apps, and auto-delete.
- Mute other microphones and move confidential conversations away from active smart speakers.
- Replace secrets with placeholders or omit them entirely.
During the conversation
- Watch for visual or audible activation indicators.
- Pause and mute the device when another person enters the room.
- Do not assume the assistant understood a correction; the original utterance may already have been transmitted.
Afterward
- Delete the chat or activity item if it should not remain.
- Remove audio/video, transcript, and memory entries separately where available.
- Check connected apps and feedback submissions.
- Verify that automatic deletion remains enabled.
What privacy can and cannot be guaranteed
These controls can reduce retention and secondary use, but they cannot guarantee that a conversation was never heard, transmitted, logged, reviewed, or copied. A nearby person, an accidentally activated microphone, a managed-workspace administrator, a connected application, or a legal and safety exception can create additional exposure. For highly confidential work, use a system approved for that information and follow your organization’s policy rather than relying on a consumer assistant setting.
