AI memory is most reliable when you treat it as editable context, not as a permanent record of truth. Keep durable preferences and active project constraints; question temporary facts, estimates, and old decisions. Before an important answer, inspect what the assistant is using, state the current facts explicitly, retrieve the original conversation when precision matters, and correct or delete stale entries in every place they may exist.
No memory feature guarantees error-free answers. Controls differ by plan, platform, region, rollout, and workspace policy, so use the product-specific steps below as a map and confirm the labels in your current account.
Why old memory can distort a new answer
An assistant may combine the current prompt with saved memories, previous chat history, custom instructions, uploaded files, connected applications, or a project knowledge base. A detail that was accurate last year can therefore appear beside a request about today. The result may sound coherent while relying on an obsolete deadline, an abandoned preference, an old job title, or a document that has since been replaced.

The practical implication is to review memory periodically and to give current evidence priority whenever the two conflict.

Memory is also separate from its source in many systems. A saved item can survive after the chat that inspired it is removed. Conversely, deleting a chat or file may not erase a separately stored memory. Think of each remembered fact as having two parts: a compact representation and one or more underlying sources. Managing both is necessary when the information is sensitive or no longer true.
What an assistant may be remembering
The word “memory” can hide several different mechanisms. Identify the mechanism before deciding how to fix a misleading answer.

These sources can overlap. A response can cite a project file while also following a saved writing preference. Seeing one source does not prove it was the only influence; some interfaces show a partial source list or retrieval trace.

A practical workflow for clean, current context
1. Separate durable preferences from changing facts
Good memory candidates are stable instructions that improve many future sessions: “Use metric units,” “Put commands in code blocks,” or “I prefer a concise executive summary.” An active project constraint can also be worth retaining when it has a clear owner and review date.
Be cautious with temporary plans, prices, schedules, estimates, health information, legal circumstances, and statements such as “I am currently using version X.” Store these only when the product gives you a way to attach a date or you are prepared to review them. A useful test is: Would this still be true after a major change in my work, location, software, or priorities? If not, keep it in the current chat or a dated project note instead of broad memory.
2. Ask what is remembered before relying on it
Open the assistant’s memory or personalization view and read the summary rather than assuming it is complete. In products that expose sources, inspect which chat, file, or connection contributed to the answer. Record the date and scope of anything you intend to keep.

If the interface offers no readable memory panel, ask in the chat for a concise list of remembered preferences and project facts, then treat the response as a lead rather than an authoritative export. Do not paste secrets into a diagnostic prompt merely to discover whether they are stored.
3. State the current truth in the new request
When an old detail might have changed, put the correction in the prompt: “My launch date is now 14 November 2026; ignore the July date in earlier chats.” If the correction should persist, ask the assistant to update or forget the old item and then verify that the memory view reflects the change.
For high-consequence work, identify the evidence that wins: “Use the attached contract dated 3 October 2026 over any previous conversation.” This makes the priority explicit without assuming the model will infer it.
4. Scope separate workstreams
Create a project or workspace for a distinct client, product, course, or household task. Keep its files and conversations there, and avoid putting unrelated personal preferences into a project-wide instruction. Where available, choose a project-only memory mode so references stay inside that project rather than drawing from broad history.
Scope is a relevance control, not a truth guarantee. An obsolete specification inside the correct project is still obsolete. Mark superseded files, remove duplicates, and name the authoritative version.
5. Retrieve the original discussion instead of trusting a summary
If a decision, quote, or requirement matters, ask the assistant to find the earlier conversation and show the relevant passage. Anthropic’s Claude documentation gives literal examples such as “What did we discuss about [topic]?” and “Can you find our conversation about [subject]?” These are examples of prompts, not evidence that users commonly phrase requests that way.

Compare the retrieved message with the current request. A memory summary may omit exceptions, dates, or who made a decision. If the assistant cannot produce a source, treat the recollection as unverified and supply the original text yourself.
6. Correct or delete every copy
When a fact is wrong, edit or delete the saved memory first. Then inspect the source conversation, uploaded file, connected record, and project note. Remove or replace the source if it should no longer be used. In ChatGPT, deleting a chat alone does not necessarily remove a separate saved memory. In Claude, a memory entry generated from a deleted or expired conversation is not automatically removed; it must be deleted individually.
7. Use a no-memory mode for sensitive or one-off work
For a confidential question, a temporary analysis, or a task that should not affect future answers, use the product’s temporary, incognito, or per-chat memory control when offered. Confirm what the mode does: it may stop personalization without deleting existing memories, and retention rules can still apply to the conversation itself.

Depending on account, platform, region, and workspace settings, ChatGPT memory can draw on saved memories, chat history, custom instructions, Library files, and connected apps. The exact combination is not universal.
Reviewing and correcting memory
Use the Memory or Personalization settings to review the available memory summary. Correct an item in chat or through the editing control, then reread the summary to confirm the current wording. ChatGPT may show sources that contributed to personalization beneath a response, but that list may not reveal every factor used.
Reference chat history and deletion
ChatGPT provides a control for referencing past chat history. If you turn that reference off, OpenAI says information remembered from past chats is scheduled for deletion from its systems within 30 days; the original chats remain unless you delete them separately. This is not the same as deleting the chat archive.

Project-only memory
Where the setting is available, Project-only memory restricts references to conversations inside the selected project. Use it for a self-contained workstream, then verify the setting on the project and account because availability varies.

Temporary Chat is intended for conversations that should not use or update normal memory. Read the current in-product notice before relying on it for a particular privacy requirement, since storage and retention are separate from personalization.
Claude: chat search, memory, and project retrieval
Anthropic documents past-chat search for paid Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans on web, desktop, and mobile. Search can be constrained to chats outside projects or to the selected individual project. The feature uses retrieval-augmented generation (RAG); a search appears as a tool call and returned references can link to the original chats.
Searching past chats
Ask for the topic and request the source, for example: “Find our conversation about the database migration and quote the decision and date.” Check the linked chat before treating the result as current. Past-chat search and memory have separate controls, so disabling one does not necessarily disable the other.
Editing memory
Open Settings > Memory to view, edit, or delete topics. If an old conversation generated a memory, deleting that conversation does not automatically remove the memory entry. Organization settings and retention policies can further affect Enterprise behavior.

Projects RAG
Anthropic’s project RAG documentation, dated 10 September 2026, says the feature is available on paid Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. As RAG activates near the context-window limit, project knowledge can expand by up to 10x by retrieving relevant uploaded documents instead of loading all project content at once. “Up to 10x” is a capacity claim; it is not a tenfold accuracy improvement and does not prevent stale documents from being retrieved.

Importing and exporting memory
Claude describes memory import and export as experimental. An import may not incorporate every item successfully. Review imported entries one by one, remove errors, and keep an exported memory as a backup or transfer artifact rather than assuming an exact migration.

The OpenAI Agents SDK describes a similar pattern for developers: retrieve memory progressively, update it when the user requests a change, and trust the current environment when stored information is stale. That is an agent-development pattern, not proof that every consumer assistant behaves identically.
How to verify an answer before acting on it
- List the volatile claims. Dates, prices, versions, policies, availability, names, and permissions deserve checking.
- Ask for provenance. Request the chat, file, or current source behind each important claim.
- Compare dates and scope. A correct statement from another project or an older version can still be wrong for this task.
- Supply the winning evidence. Paste the current document, link the authoritative record, or state the corrected value.
- Run a contradiction check. Ask, “What in your answer depends on an earlier memory, and what would change if that memory were wrong?”
- Confirm the action. Before sending, publishing, paying, deleting, or changing production systems, verify the final value outside the assistant when consequences are material.
Symptoms of stale or irrelevant context

A maintenance schedule that keeps memory manageable
- Before a major project: review global memories, remove unrelated items, and establish the project boundary.
- When circumstances change: correct the old fact immediately and check whether it exists in a chat, file, or connected source.
- Before a high-stakes answer: retrieve the source for decisions and verify all time-sensitive claims.
- After a project ends: delete temporary project memories and revoke connected-source access that is no longer needed.
- After an import or product change: inspect the memory list because feature behavior, plan availability, and retention controls can change.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
Official product pages document controls, retrieval behavior, and capacity, but they do not provide a controlled comparison proving that one memory system prevents stale-context errors better than another. No reliable universal error-reduction percentage is established. The defensible goal is therefore procedural: narrow the scope, inspect the source, verify changing facts, and make corrections explicit.

Availability is especially volatile. A control documented for one plan, platform, region, or organization may be absent from another. Check the current settings and help documentation immediately before relying on a feature, particularly for enterprise retention, connected apps, temporary chats, and project-only memory.
Bottom line: make memory provisional
Keep memory for stable preferences and well-defined project constraints. Use chat search and source links for exact historical facts. When old and new information conflict, state the current truth, identify the evidence that wins, and remove stale copies from both memory and their sources. That habit makes an assistant’s context more useful without pretending that any memory feature is infallible.
