Buy the exact game before its Game Pass departure date if you want to keep playing it through your Xbox or Microsoft account. Downloading a title from Game Pass does not purchase a permanent license. On the current Xbox catalog, members are told they can buy a departing game with a discount of up to 20%, but the actual price, offer, edition, platform availability and even purchase availability can vary by title, region, plan and date. If you do not want to buy it, move it to the top of your play queue and finish it while your membership still includes it.
What changes when an Xbox Game Pass game leaves?
Game Pass is a rotating catalog. Xbox adds games and removes others, so access through the subscription is temporary even if the game remains installed on your console or PC. When the catalog license ends, the installation itself does not turn into an owned copy. You need a separate purchase, another valid license, or an eligible streaming route to continue playing.
The practical deadline is the departure date shown for the title. Treat that date as the end of catalog access for your account, plan and platform unless the listing says otherwise. Catalog information is not universal: Xbox says availability can differ by time, region, membership plan and platform. Check the listing that you see while signed in rather than relying on a screenshot, an old article or a different country’s catalog.
Xbox’s own guidance is straightforward: buy a game that is leaving if you want to keep playing it. The current catalog describes a member saving “up to 20%”; that wording is a maximum, not a guaranteed discount for every title.

Find the real departure date before you make a decision
Use the current “Leaving soon” collection
Open the official Xbox Game Pass catalog and select the Leaving soon collection. Xbox currently describes this collection as games expected to exit within the next two weeks. Open the individual game card to see the title-specific date and the versions available to you.
That two-week description is useful for planning, not a promise that every future removal will follow an identical schedule. Xbox’s 2020 guide described giving members “a couple weeks’ notice,” while the live catalog is the better source for the date currently attached to a game.
Check the same account and platform you actually use
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that holds your Game Pass membership.
- Check the platform on which you play: Xbox console, Windows PC or another supported device shown by the listing.
- Confirm the membership tier displayed for your account, because catalog and streaming eligibility can differ by plan.
- Open the game’s own store page rather than assuming that every edition has the same departure or purchase terms.
Turn on reminders and check more than one channel
Xbox’s official guide recommends checking the Xbox mobile app, the Xbox app on Windows 10, or the Xbox Game Pass section on console for the Leaving soon collection. Enable notifications in the mobile app if you want a prompt when catalog changes are announced. You can also watch the catalog and Xbox Wire updates, but use the title listing shown for your account as the final check before buying or scheduling a long play session.

Option 1: buy the exact game before it leaves
Buying the title is the only general-purpose way in the supplied Xbox guidance to keep a departing Game Pass game in your library. Make the purchase while the catalog entry and the store page are both available.
Purchase checklist
- Open Leaving soon and select the game you care about.
- From that listing, open the exact Xbox or Microsoft Store page for the title.
- Check the edition name, platform and any included content. Buy the version that matches the device on which you intend to play.
- Review the current store price and the member price shown while your eligible subscription is active. The catalog advertises savings of up to 20%; do not assume the maximum applies to this title.
- Complete the purchase before the stated departure date and retain the order confirmation in your Microsoft account.
A Game Pass download is not a purchase. Installing the game early can save download time, but it does not replace the ownership transaction. If you cancel the subscription, or if the title leaves the catalog, the installed files do not by themselves grant ongoing catalog access.

Why you should verify purchase availability immediately
A Game Pass departure and a store removal are separate events. Sometimes a title remains for sale after leaving the subscription, but you must not assume that outcome. In a December 3, 2024 announcement, Xbox said Forza Horizon 4 would leave both Game Pass and the Xbox/Microsoft Store on December 15, 2024. That dated example shows why “I’ll buy it later” can be risky; it does not establish the current availability of any other game. Check the exact store page before deciding to wait.

If the store page no longer offers a purchase for your account or platform, do not treat a physical disc, a generic console accessory or the existing Game Pass installation as a guaranteed replacement. The available license, edition and platform are title-specific.
Option 2: finish the game before the removal date
If buying is not worthwhile, make the departure date a planning deadline. Xbox specifically recommends moving a departing title up your queue. This approach costs no additional purchase, but it gives you less flexibility if the game is long, you play intermittently or the departure date moves sooner than expected.
A practical completion plan
- Write down the listed departure date and the number of sessions you can realistically play before then.
- Prioritize the main story or the particular mode you care about instead of beginning another Game Pass title.
- Keep the game installed while you work through it, provided your device has enough storage; installation only avoids a reinstall and does not extend access.
- Check the catalog again before your final session for a date, platform or membership change.
- Capture any personal notes, screenshots or completion information you want to retain. Do not assume that every title handles saves the same way after catalog access ends.
The older Xbox guide’s “couple weeks’ notice” is a useful planning illustration, not a standing guarantee. Use the current Leaving soon entry for the actual time available.
Option 3: stream it only if you already own it and it is eligible
Xbox has also described a Stream your own game collection for Game Pass Ultimate members. This is a conditional alternative, not a universal way to bypass a catalog removal. Xbox directs owners to check which games are streamable on supported devices, and the eligible list can expand or change.

Conditions to verify
- You must own the game; having downloaded it through Game Pass is not the same as owning it.
- Your account must have the membership required for the current streaming collection, which Xbox has described as Game Pass Ultimate.
- The specific title must appear on the current Stream your own game eligibility list.
- Your device must be one of the supported devices shown by Xbox for that title and service.
Check the current collection before relying on streaming for a game that is about to leave. Xbox has not promised that every removed Game Pass title can be streamed, and the supplied guidance does not establish a universal rule for performance, regions or every device.

Compare the three choices

If none of the required checks for the first or third option succeeds, plan around finishing the game instead of assuming a later purchase or streaming session will be available.
Do not confuse Game Pass access with ownership
There are three different states that are easy to mix up:
- Catalog access: your active membership currently includes the game.
- Purchased ownership: your Microsoft account has bought the exact version you intend to use.
- Stream-your-own eligibility: you own the title, and Xbox currently lists it for cloud streaming on your membership and device.
Only the second state is the ordinary purchase route for keeping a departing title available. The third is an additional, conditional service. A download proves only that files are present on the device; it does not identify which of these access states applies.

The available Xbox guidance does not establish one save-data rule covering every game, platform, edition, membership tier and launcher. Do not promise yourself that a save will always remain usable after a title leaves, or that it will automatically appear in every version you later buy.
Before the deadline, confirm that you are signed in to the account you use for the game and allow the console or PC to complete its normal save synchronization. If your decision depends on a particular cross-platform or post-purchase save behavior, check that game’s current support information rather than inferring it from the fact that it was downloaded through Game Pass.

Waiting for the removal date to buy
Problem: the title may leave the store at the same time as Game Pass, as Xbox announced for Forza Horizon 4 in December 2024.

Fix: open the purchase page while the game is still in Leaving soon and buy before the catalog date if continued access matters.

Problem: “up to 20%” is a ceiling, not a fixed rate.
Fix: compare the exact member price displayed for the title, edition, region and plan at checkout.
Thinking an installed game is owned
Problem: local files remain on storage even when the subscription entitlement changes.
Fix: verify an actual purchase in the store or account order history; otherwise treat the game as subscription access.
Assuming streaming covers every departure
Problem: Stream your own game is limited to owned titles on the current eligibility list and supported devices.

Fix: check the live collection for the specific title before making streaming your plan.
Using an old departure list
Problem: dates and catalogs change. For example, an April 2, 2025 Xbox Wire post listed seven games—Botany Manor, Coral Island, Harold Halibut, Homestead Arcana, Kona, Orcs Must Die! 3 and Turbo Golf Racing—as leaving on April 15, 2025. That list is historical, not a current schedule.
Fix: use the live catalog entry for your account and region, then confirm the store page immediately before purchase.
Use a simple decision rule
- Would you replay the game? If yes, go to the purchase check rather than relying on a last-minute completion plan.
- Is the exact edition still sold? If yes, compare the current member price and buy before departure. If no, do not assume it will return to the store.
- Do you already own it? If yes, inspect Stream your own game eligibility for your Ultimate account and device.
- Can you finish in the remaining sessions? If yes, prioritize it and monitor the date. If no, choose purchase or eligible streaming while those options are still available.
What Xbox’s dated examples tell you
Xbox’s April 2, 2025 Game Pass update illustrates the normal communication pattern: it named the games leaving, gave a specific April 15 date and reminded members about the 20% purchase discount. That post is useful as an example of how a departure notice can be presented, but it should not be used as a current list or as proof that every title receives the same notice period.
The current catalog remains the authoritative place to check what is leaving now, while Xbox Wire posts and app notifications can help you notice changes. Use both for awareness, but make your purchase and scheduling decision from the title-specific listing visible to your account.
Bottom line for your next departing game
Open Leaving soon, note the exact date, and decide before that date. Buy the exact game and edition if you want to keep it, using the member price shown at the time; otherwise move it to the top of your queue and finish it. If you already own it, check the current Stream your own game list, your Ultimate membership and your device. Never rely on the download alone, on a guaranteed 20% discount or on the assumption that a game will remain purchasable after it leaves.
