To keep a YouTube channel streaming continuously, send a looping video feed to YouTube Live through an encoder—or use a cloud service that runs the loop for you. With an encoder, you need an eligible channel, a continuing video source, reliable power and internet, monitoring, and a recovery plan. YouTube documents 24/7 feeds, but neither an encoder nor YouTube guarantees uninterrupted service.
Choose how the feed will run
There are two practical approaches: operate an encoder yourself, or have a cloud service play uploaded videos to YouTube. The right choice depends on whether you can keep the source, encoder, power and network running and respond when something fails.
- Self-managed encoder: You control the video source and stream settings. The computer or hardware encoder, source playback, power and internet connection must stay available, and you are responsible for monitoring and recovery.
- Cloud playback: A service runs uploaded videos without relying on your home computer to remain on. You still need to configure the YouTube stream and check that the public feed is working.
What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming before your planned launch. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover activation and setup.
- A video source that can play continuously, such as a prepared playlist, and an encoder capable of sending it to YouTube Live.
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the stream bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% headroom; include the load of both primary and backup encoders if both transmit. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Reliable power, monitoring and a plan for source, encoder, network or platform interruptions. The cited YouTube guidance does not specify a power-backup design or guarantee a particular uptime.
Set up a 24/7 stream with an encoder
- Enable live streaming and confirm channel eligibility. In YouTube Studio, verify that live streaming is available for your channel. If this is your first time enabling it, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Prepare the video source. Arrange the video or playlist so it can repeat, and confirm that its audio and picture play correctly before connecting it to the encoder. A stream can only continue while its source remains available.
- Choose an encoder. YouTube supports software encoders and standalone hardware encoders. Software can suit a modest setup; dedicated hardware may suit a higher-production workflow. Compare input compatibility, unattended operation controls, recovery options, power and network needs, monitoring and cost. YouTube’s general recommendation of professional-grade hardware for higher-production-value events is not a certification for unattended 24/7 use. Its live streaming tips discuss encoder setup and preparation.
- Create or select the stream. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create a stream or select the one you intend to use. Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into the matching fields in your encoder. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Check encoder settings. Set the resolution, bitrate and keyframe interval to values supported by your encoder and appropriate for the video and available upload bandwidth. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance rather than relying on a fixed setting that may no longer suit your stream. YouTube’s live stream settings help also covers stream keys, latency, DVR, auto-start and auto-stop.
- Start the encoder ahead of time. Start sending the feed before relying on it as live. Wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then check the intended watch page on another device. Confirm that picture and audio are present and that playback remains stable.
- Monitor the running feed. Check video and audio, watch for encoder or network alerts, and monitor a local archive file if your workflow records one. YouTube recommends monitoring the stream and checking the preview and archive file; these are operational checks, not a guarantee that the feed will remain online.
Plan bandwidth, backup and recovery
Run an upload speed test on the connection the encoder will actually use. YouTube recommends upload capacity equal to the total stream bitrate plus 20% spare capacity. If primary and backup encoders transmit at the same time, count both bitrates before adding the 20% margin. A connection disruption can break the stream, so spare capacity alone does not eliminate outage risk. Details are in YouTube’s bandwidth and connectivity guidance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If you use a backup encoder, test the switchover before depending on it. YouTube advises stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. Test with your actual stream setup, and verify the viewer-facing player rather than assuming that a backup device is ready simply because it is powered on.

Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
- Confirm the source can recover or restart after a playback error.
- Decide who will notice an interruption and what they should check first: source playback, encoder status, network and power.
- Keep access to the channel and encoder configuration secure, including the stream key.
- Do not treat a successful test as proof of zero downtime; outages can also involve the network, power or YouTube.
Keep a continuous feed and separate broadcasts straight
A continuously running feed does not have to mean every segment is a separate stream. Google’s Live Streaming API documentation describes a 24/7 feed as one broadcast and a separate interview video as another broadcast bound to the same stream. In that example, the interview broadcast can go live and later be completed without stopping the ongoing feed. This is an API pattern for technically sophisticated operators, not a required setup for ordinary encoder users. See Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams.
Plan recording and archives separately
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a longer 24/7 session will be archived in full. If you need a complete recording or long-term retention, plan and verify a separate recording workflow rather than relying on an archive of a stream lasting more than 12 hours. The threshold appears in YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Check rights and channel rules before looping content
Only stream videos you have the right to use. A video being available online does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it. Copyright claims or other restrictions can interrupt a stream or affect the channel. YouTube’s rules and enforcement can change, so review the current requirements in YouTube Studio and consult the copyright safety checklist before scheduling a long-running playlist. A 24/7 schedule is not a substitute for complying with YouTube’s policies or copyright law.
Troubleshoot common interruptions
- No preview appears in Live Control Room: Confirm the encoder is running, the correct server URL and stream key are entered, and the stream is selected in YouTube Studio. Check for first-time activation delays if live streaming was only just enabled.
- The picture freezes or drops: Check whether the source itself is still playing, then check encoder status and upload stability. Compare the stream’s total bitrate with available upload capacity and leave the recommended 20% headroom.
- The feed fails when switching to backup: Re-test the failover procedure and confirm the player actually changes to the backup encoder. Include the backup’s transmitted bitrate in your bandwidth calculation.
- The player works but audio or video is wrong: Inspect the source and encoder output, then check the watch page on another device. YouTube recommends ongoing audio and video monitoring.
- The full session is missing from the archive: YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. For longer sessions, do not assume the complete broadcast will be archived; use a separately planned recording workflow.
