Yes—you can keep a YouTube channel live around the clock without leaving an old computer switched on. Move the encoder to a cloud service when your source is a playlist of uploaded videos; use a standalone hardware encoder when the source is a camera, microphone, or other live local feed. - Enable YouTube Live and wait for activation if this is your first stream.
- Prepare videos that you own or are licensed to use. Check the files for missing audio, black frames, and incorrect orientation before uploading.

Other cloud-service checks
If you evaluate another provider, confirm that it stores your files, supports a continuous YouTube output, offers playlist scheduling, and explains what happens after a disconnect. Ask whether it retries automatically, how storage is counted, and how you retrieve or delete your files. A cloud encoder removes home-PC maintenance, but you are relying on the provider’s infrastructure and policies.
Method 2: use a standalone hardware encoder for a live local source
Choose hardware when the feed is generated in real time: a camera, microphone mixer, presentation system, or another HDMI/SDI source. A dedicated appliance replaces the general-purpose computer, but it does not eliminate local dependencies.
Hardware setup
- Connect the camera, switcher, or other source to an encoder input supported by the exact model. Magewell’s Ultra Encode documentation, for example, describes configuring YouTube streaming from dedicated hardware; verify the inputs and firmware of the model you actually buy.
- Connect the encoder to wired Ethernet where possible. Provide stable power, and consider an uninterruptible power supply if an outage would end the broadcast.
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the stream and copy the server URL and key.
- Open the encoder’s web interface or display menu and enter the YouTube destination, key, video format, audio source, and output settings.
- Start with H.264 video, constant-bitrate rate control, a two-second keyframe interval, and AAC or MP3 audio. Set the bitrate low enough for the available upload connection and test before the event.
- Start the encoder, confirm YouTube reports a healthy incoming signal, and view the stream from a second device.
- Leave the encoder, source equipment, network, and power running. The old PC can remain off.
When hardware is the better choice
- You need a camera or microphone that cannot be uploaded in advance.
- You require a physical HDMI/SDI input with predictable latency.
- You prefer a fixed appliance over maintaining a virtual server.
- You can provide reliable local power and internet continuously.
Hardware does not automatically recover from every network or source failure. Check whether the model can reconnect after an interruption, and test the recovery behavior before depending on it for an unattended broadcast.
Method 3: run FFmpeg or OBS on a remote virtual machine
A remote VM can keep a custom workflow online without using your home PC. It is appropriate when you need scripts, filters, dynamic playlists, or a pipeline that a managed cloud service does not expose. The trade-off is administration: you must secure the server, install updates, upload media, watch disk space, and restart the process when it fails.

- Rent a server in a location with a network path that can sustain your chosen upload bitrate.
- Install FFmpeg or OBS and upload the media. Keep enough disk space for the files and temporary logs.
- Store the YouTube server URL and key as protected environment variables rather than hard-coding them in a public script.
- Run the encoder inside a persistent service such as systemd or another supervisor so it starts after a reboot and restarts after a crash.
- Use a monitoring method that alerts you when the process exits or YouTube stops receiving data.
- Test a short private or unlisted stream, confirm audio and video, then switch to the public schedule.

Use YouTube-compatible encoding settings
Video and keyframes
H.264 with constant-bitrate control is a documented starting point for YouTube encoder streams. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds. Match the output resolution and frame rate to the material you actually have; increasing them does not improve a low-resolution source and increases the upload requirement.
Audio
AAC or MP3 audio is supported by the encoder guidance. Check that the audio source is selected, meters move during the test, and the stream is not silently sending video only.
Bandwidth and testing
Choose a bitrate your sustained upload connection can carry, not merely the speed shown in a short speed test. Leave headroom for network variation, run a private or unlisted test, and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Test after changing resolution, frame rate, audio, or encoder firmware.

Copyright, originality, and monetization
Only stream videos, music, images, and narration that you own or have permission to use. A license or permission addresses copyright, but it does not guarantee monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams as part of “video” and warns against generic, repetitive, mass-produced, or reused material without meaningful value.
