Yes, you can send prerecorded videos to YouTube as a continuous live feed. The practical choices are a local encoder such as OBS, which runs on a computer you maintain, or a hosted streaming service that sends the feed from its own cloud infrastructure. Neither method gives blanket approval for every 24/7 format: your channel must be eligible for live streaming, every asset must be cleared for the full use, and YouTube’s Community Guidelines, Terms of Service, copyright systems and monetisation reviews still apply.
This guide covers the complete local workflow, hosted operation, stream-key security, playlist design, reliability, replay limits, copyright and reused-content risks, troubleshooting, and costs. If you want the stream to continue while your computer is off, StreamNeo is the cloud-first option described below.
What “24/7 live” means on YouTube
A 24/7 channel is not a special YouTube channel type. It is a live broadcast session in which an encoder continuously sends prerecorded programming. The source may be one file, a playlist, or scheduled transitions between files. YouTube receives that output as live video and may create a replay when the session ends.

YouTube does not provide blanket advance approval for every prerecorded 24/7 format. Acceptance depends on the channel, the material being sent, and the policy context. A technically stable connection therefore is not the same as policy approval or monetisation approval.

Check eligibility and policy before you build the loop
Live-stream eligibility
- Verify the channel before attempting to stream.
- Confirm that the channel has had no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
- Follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service for the entire broadcast, not only for the original uploaded files.
- YouTube’s current guidance allows up to 10 active streams per channel and up to three active streams per stream key. Plan keys and concurrent channels accordingly.
Rights must cover the whole programme
You need permission for every element that appears or can be heard: video footage, music, photographs, artwork, voice recordings, performances, logos and graphics. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches, including matches to another live broadcast. A match can replace the picture with a placeholder, issue a warning, interrupt the feed or terminate it.
Licensing a track or clip does not always prevent an automated interruption. A rights holder may also need to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist. Keep the rights holder’s management contact so you can resolve a legitimate match quickly.
Keep a rights log
For each item in the playlist, record the creator, licence or permission, territory, platform, permitted duration, attribution requirement, replay rights, monetisation rights and rights-management contact. Store the agreement or licence with that entry. This log is useful when a claim arrives months after the material was added.

The two main approaches differ in who owns uptime and recovery. The table starts with StreamNeo because it is the hosted option intended for an always-on YouTube feed.
| Rank | Approach | What stays running | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | StreamNeo | StreamNeo’s cloud infrastructure | Always on from the cloud, any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and a first day free without a card. | You still manage rights, channel access, programming and policy compliance. |
| 2 | Local encoder such as OBS | Your computer, power and internet connection | Detailed control over scenes, overlays, transitions and local files. | A power, software or network failure can end the broadcast; you must operate and monitor the machine. |
A local recording is valuable as an archive, but it cannot keep the YouTube broadcast online after the encoder or internet connection fails. A hosted service removes the home-computer dependency, but it does not remove your responsibility for the channel or its content.

Run the channel locally with OBS
1. Prepare the channel
- Verify the YouTube channel and check its live-streaming status.
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key into a secure password manager or other protected location.
- Do not publish the key in screenshots, tutorials, chat messages or shared documents. If you believe it has been exposed, rotate it before going live.
2. Prepare the programme
- Put the approved videos in a dedicated folder with clear filenames and a written order.
- Check every file from beginning to end for rights, picture, audio, unwanted gaps and accidental personal information.
- Decide whether the programme is one long file or a playlist. A playlist makes it easier to replace one item without rebuilding the entire programme, but every item must meet the same rights and policy standard.
- Design a deliberate transition. A short black or silent gap can look like a failed stream and may prompt viewers to leave.
3. Add the media source in OBS
- Create a scene for the live programme.
- Add a media source and select the prerecorded file. Enable looping when a single file should repeat, or use a playlist-capable source when several files should run in sequence.
- Set the source to restart when it becomes active if your scene collection contains more than one programme scene.
- Watch the source for at least one complete transition. Confirm that the next item starts automatically and that audio does not remain muted after a change.
4. Connect OBS to YouTube
- Open OBS settings and select YouTube as the service, or choose a custom service and enter the stream URL supplied by YouTube.
- Paste the stream key without adding spaces. Keep the key hidden while sharing your screen.
- Choose a video resolution and frame rate that your source files and computer can sustain continuously. Matching the source avoids unnecessary scaling and frame-rate conversion.
- Use a consistent encoder configuration rather than changing settings during the broadcast. Your exact bitrate, codec and keyframe choices depend on the source, encoder and YouTube’s current recommendations; YouTube does not publish one universal computer specification for every channel and format.
- Watch OBS’s dropped-frame, rendering and encoding indicators during a private test. A machine that handles a five-minute test may still overheat or run out of storage during a long session.
5. Test privately
- Set the YouTube event to private or unlisted.
- Start OBS and confirm that YouTube Studio shows a healthy preview and live status.
- Check the title, description, thumbnail, visibility, latency choice and category before making the event public.
- Let the programme pass through at least one file boundary. Check for black frames, silent audio, duplicated items and unexpected scene changes.
- Stop and restart once. Document the exact sequence an operator should follow if the encoder needs to be restarted.
6. Publish and monitor
- Start the encoder first, verify the preview, then publish the scheduled event in YouTube Studio.
- Keep YouTube Studio’s status and alert panels available to the responsible operator.
- Record the start time, event ID, encoder profile and playlist version in an operating log.
- Keep a separate local recording when an archive copy matters. That file is a backup copy, not a failover connection.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the programme from the cloud while your computer can remain off.
- Upload: Add the recordings or assemble the playlist in StreamNeo.
- Add the key: Enter the YouTube stream key securely.
- Go live: Start the stream and let the cloud service handle continuous looping.
Every slot includes one always-on stream, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, support from the StreamNeo team and 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across your active slots. The uploaded file is streamed as supplied, with no re-encode and any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo does not stream to other platforms.

Power and internet
A local setup needs dependable power and internet. A UPS can give the computer time to shut down cleanly, while a documented network-failover plan can reduce outages. These measures improve resilience but do not guarantee that YouTube will remain connected.

Encoder recovery
Write a short restart runbook: stop the event if necessary, verify the stream key, restart the media source, confirm the preview, and check the public status. Assign a person to receive alerts. Automatic recovery from a hosted service can restore the feed after a YouTube drop, but the channel owner should still review alerts and policy notices.
Playlist hygiene
- Use filenames and a playlist order that another operator can understand.
- Remove expired licences before the next cycle.
- Check the first and last seconds of each file so transitions do not create silence or black video.
- Keep a versioned copy of the playlist and rights log.
Replay archives and the 12-hour issue
A live session longer than 12 hours may not be captured as a replay. Twelve hours is not a guaranteed safe maximum; it is an operational warning. If replay copies matter, divide programming into conservative sub-12-hour sessions and restart deliberately. Keep a separate local recording when you need an archive regardless of YouTube’s capture behavior.
Ending and restarting sessions creates additional titles, thumbnails and stream-management work. Decide whether continuous presence or reliable replay copies is the higher priority before choosing a schedule.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why monetisation is a separate decision
Permission to use a video answers a rights question. It does not guarantee acceptance into monetisation. YouTube’s reused-content and originality review can apply even when you have permission, and review is performed at channel level.
A small set of clips in a simple repeating loop may be technically stable yet provide little evidence of original commentary, curation or transformation. Add genuine value where appropriate—such as original presentation, context, programming or commentary—and retain documentation showing what you created and what you licensed. No format can promise monetisation approval.

Operational checklist
- Channel verified; no live restriction in the previous 90 days.
- Stream URL and key stored privately; exposed keys rotated.
- Every video, audio track, image and voice element logged with rights and territories.
- Private or unlisted end-to-end test completed, including a file transition.
- Title, thumbnail, visibility and description checked in YouTube Studio.
- Power, internet, operator and restart procedures documented for a local encoder.
- YouTube status and alerts monitored during the public session.
- Replay requirements assessed against the possibility that sessions over 12 hours are not captured.
- Separate archive recording made when a replay copy is important.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube refuses the live connection | The channel is not verified, has a current restriction, or the key is wrong. | Check eligibility, create or select the correct event, copy the key again and rotate it if it may have been exposed. |
| Video stops when one file ends | Looping or playlist transitions are not enabled. | Enable looping, configure the playlist source, and test a complete transition privately. |
| Black or silent gaps appear | A file has different start characteristics, a scene change is mistimed, or audio is muted. | Inspect the boundary in the source files, standardise the scene transition and monitor the next cycle. |
| Frames drop or the picture stutters | The computer cannot sustain the selected encode, rendering load or connection. | Reduce unnecessary scene complexity, match the source, review OBS performance indicators and use a machine and connection appropriate to the chosen format. |
| The stream is interrupted by a rights notice | YouTube detected third-party material. | Pause or replace the item, verify the licence, contact the rights holder about an allowlist when appropriate, and do not resume with uncleared material. |
| The broadcast is live but has no replay | The session exceeded 12 hours or YouTube did not capture it. | Use shorter sessions for future replay needs and maintain a separate local recording. |
| A local outage ends the stream | Power, internet, operating-system or encoder failure. | Follow the restart runbook, check the public status, and consider a hosted cloud workflow when unattended continuity is the priority. |
Questions that come up after setup
Can I run a 24/7 stream from a phone?
The workflow described here relies on an encoder or hosted infrastructure. A phone is not a dependable unattended encoder unless you have separately verified its power, thermal, network and app behavior for the entire schedule.
Can I change the playlist while a broadcast is live?
That depends on the encoder or hosted service’s playlist controls. Make changes in a test event first, document the expected transition, and avoid editing the active programme without an operator watching the output.
Does a successful private test prove monetisation eligibility?
No. A private test proves that the technical path works. YouTube’s channel-level originality and reused-content review is a separate decision from live-stream access and copyright permission.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many simultaneous live streams can one YouTube channel have?
YouTube’s current guidance allows up to 10 active streams per channel and up to three active streams per stream key.
What should I do if my stream key appears in a public screenshot?
Rotate the key in YouTube Studio before starting another broadcast, then update the encoder or hosted service with the replacement key.
Can I rely on a local recording as a backup stream?
No. A local recording preserves a copy of the programme but cannot maintain the YouTube connection after an encoder or internet failure.
