Most listeners do not follow a podcast account; they follow its RSS feed. If that feed keeps working, points to the new host, and preserves episode identifiers, a hosting move can be largely invisible to followers. If you simply delete a listing or close an account, however, apps may stop receiving episodes even though your audio files still exist.
The right plan depends on what is changing: a hosting provider, a directory listing, or a paid subscription. This guide gives the technical migration sequence, listener-communication plan, and diagnostics for each case.
First identify what is leaving
“Leaving a platform” can describe three different events. Treating them as the same is a common cause of broken delivery and confused subscribers.

Changing hosting providers
Your RSS feed moves from one hosting server to another. This is the most controllable scenario: you can preserve the feed identity, redirect the old address, and keep episode metadata and GUIDs unchanged. Apple says downloads and follow status should remain intact during a hosting-provider move when the feed is migrated correctly.

Removing a show from a directory
You stop distributing to a listening app or directory. A directory listing is not the same thing as your RSS feed. Removing a listing may reduce discovery there, but it does not automatically move followers to another listing. You must submit the feed to each destination that is not updated automatically.
Ending a paid subscription
A paid subscription is a separate relationship from a free RSS follow. Removing an Apple Podcasts subscription ends the subscription arrangement, while RSS episodes remain available. Former subscribers continue to receive episode notifications if they also follow the free show.
The migration principle: keep one continuous RSS identity
Your RSS feed is the distribution link that podcast apps poll for new episodes. Accounts, dashboards, and directory pages are access points to that feed; they are not substitutes for it. During a move, keep the old feed address reachable and make it point to the new feed.
Use both mechanisms recommended in Apple’s creator guidance:
- Configure the old server to return an HTTP 301 (permanent) redirect to the new RSS feed.
- Add
<itunes:new-feed-url>containing the new feed URL in the new feed. - Leave both mechanisms active for at least four weeks.
Spotify describes the same approach for shows leaving Spotify for Creators: a 301 redirect is intended to keep listeners on Spotify and other platforms receiving new episodes after the move. Spotify separately advises waiting at least one week after redirecting before deleting the old account. That one-week interval is Spotify-specific guidance, not a universal rule for every host; retaining the old feed for Apple’s four-week minimum is the safer cross-platform baseline.
Prepare the new feed before switching
Export and inventory the old feed
Save a copy of the complete old RSS XML and make a spreadsheet of every episode. Record the episode title, publication date, audio URL, duration, explicit-content setting, season and episode numbers, transcript or chapter links, and GUID. The GUID is the episode’s permanent identifier; it is not merely a URL that can be regenerated.
Also mark which episodes are public RSS items, which were platform-exclusive, and which were available only to paying subscribers. A new host can import public feed entries, but exclusive audio may require a separate export or a new access plan. Do not promise listeners that an episode will move until you know its rights, file, and availability have been checked.

Before publishing the new feed, match the established show title, author, description, category, language, explicit-content flag, cover art, website link, and episode metadata. Keep audio URLs working or provide permanent redirects from old audio locations if your host changes file storage as well as the feed.

Check metadata at both levels. A correct show title with a missing episode description can still produce a confusing listing, while a changed explicit-content setting can alter how an app displays the show. Preserve publication dates and season or episode numbers so an app does not reorder the catalogue.
Preserve every episode GUID
Do not create new GUIDs during migration. Apple says each episode needs a unique identifier that never changes. Altering GUIDs can make apps display duplicate episodes and can distort download or listener analytics. A changed audio URL is not a reason to change the GUID.
Validate the XML and media
Open both feeds in an RSS viewer and compare them item by item. Confirm that the new XML is valid, each enclosure URL returns the audio file, file types and lengths are correct, and the newest and oldest episodes are present. Test the cover-art URL over HTTPS and check that it is accessible without login or a temporary token.

A migration can appear successful while an older enclosure still points to a deleted server or while only the newest item has imported correctly.
Move a hosted show step by step
- Build the destination feed. Import the complete catalogue into the new host. Keep titles, dates, descriptions, artwork, enclosures, and GUIDs unchanged unless a correction is genuinely required.
- Compare old and new feeds. Check the show title, description, cover art, audio, and all episode fields in an RSS viewer. Apple recommends testing the feed before the change is announced.
- Publish the new-feed tag. Add
<itunes:new-feed-url>https://new.example/feed.xml</itunes:new-feed-url>to the new feed, using the actual destination URL. - Turn on the old-server 301. Configure the old feed URL to return an HTTP 301 redirect directly to the new feed URL. Do not redirect to a homepage, a directory page, or a chain of several redirects.
- Verify from outside your dashboard. Request the old URL in a browser or HTTP inspection tool and confirm it returns 301 with the new feed in the
Locationheader. Fetch the destination and confirm it returns RSS XML with a successful response. - Submit or refresh directories. A Spotify-hosted show appears on Spotify automatically, but the creator must submit it separately to services such as Apple Podcasts and Amazon Music. Other hosts and directories have their own submission requirements.
- Keep the old feed online. Leave the redirect and new-feed tag in place for at least four weeks. If you are leaving Spotify for Creators, wait at least one week after the redirect before deleting that account, while still observing the longer four-week cross-platform period.
- Monitor delivery. Watch the old server’s redirect requests, the new host’s feed fetches, episode downloads, and platform-specific follows. Investigate a delivery break before interpreting a change in audience size.
Submit the show everywhere listeners use it
Changing a host does not guarantee that every directory updates immediately. Some services ingest the redirect automatically; others require a new submission, ownership confirmation, or manual review. Publication can take hours or, in some cases, several days.

If a listing is still absent after a few days, contact that service rather than repeatedly changing the feed. Repeated edits can create additional feed versions and make diagnosis harder.
Keep a submission log with the directory name, feed URL submitted, date, account used, and current status. This prevents a team member from submitting a second feed under a slightly different URL and gives support staff the details they need when a listing is delayed.
Tell listeners exactly what changes
Use the final episode on the old destination
Publish a short announcement before the move and repeat it in the last episode delivered through the old destination. State the effective date, the new show link, and what listeners must do. If the RSS address changes, include the RSS URL in the episode notes and on your website.

Use every existing channel
Post the same instructions in your newsletter, website, social accounts, community forum, and show notes. Use one canonical link to the new listing so listeners do not have to search for a similarly named show.
Give a fallback for advanced listeners
Apple Podcasts lets a listener follow a show directly by RSS URL. This is useful when a directory listing is delayed, but an RSS-only follow does not receive Apple catalog discovery, recommendations, editorial promotion, ratings, reviews, or Apple analytics. Present it as a continuity fallback, not as an equivalent replacement for a directory listing.
Explain the action in one sentence
A practical call to action is: “Open this new show link and tap Follow; if it is not listed yet, add this RSS URL manually.” Avoid telling people to search by title alone, because duplicate names and cached listings can lead them to the wrong feed.
Repeat the instruction after the first successful episode on the new host. Some listeners will not hear the migration announcement, and a second reminder gives people who discover the show during the transition a clear path to the current listing.
Handle paid access without confusing free followers
When an Apple Podcasts subscription is removed, subscribers lose that subscription arrangement. The public RSS feed remains, and a person who also follows the free RSS show continues to receive episode notifications. Apple recommends giving subscribers a short notice and asking them to follow the RSS show.
Separate the messages
- Paid-access message: explain the subscription end date, what happens to subscriber-only audio, and where any replacement access will be provided.
- Free-follow message: provide the normal RSS listing or direct-feed instructions so the audience continues receiving public episodes.
- Archive message: identify which older paid episodes will remain available, become public, or no longer be accessible.
Do not assume that cancelling a subscription automatically moves a subscriber to a free follow. Ask explicitly for the follow action and link to the correct show.
Diagnose a sudden audience drop
There is no representative, independently established percentage of listeners typically lost after a show leaves a platform. A sharp change in your dashboard is a symptom to investigate, not proof that listeners rejected the move.
Rule out feed delivery failure
- Request the old feed URL and confirm a 301 response, not a 200-page response or a redirect to a website homepage.
- Fetch the destination feed and check that the newest episode appears with a valid enclosure URL.
- Compare GUIDs between old and new XML to ensure they match.
- Play the newest audio file while logged out and on a mobile connection.
- Check each directory for the current episode date, artwork, and show description.
Separate distribution from discovery
If followers still receive episodes but new-listener numbers decline, the issue may be directory discovery or recommendation exposure rather than feed delivery. A direct RSS follow, for example, lacks Apple’s catalog discovery and recommendation features. Compare platform-specific follows, impressions, downloads, and completion data instead of relying on one combined total.

Check for a measurement break
Changing hosts can alter download accounting, attribution, and reporting windows. Preserve episode GUIDs, document the migration date, and compare like-for-like periods. A lower number in the new dashboard is not automatically a loss of listeners if the old host and new host count requests differently.
Use audience feedback carefully
A forum post titled “Lost a third of listeners after switching hosting platforms and can’t figure out why” illustrates a real concern, but it is not a representative statistic or verified causal account. Treat individual reports as troubleshooting clues, not benchmarks.
What the available audience statistic does—and does not—say
Spotify reported on March 8, 2023, that 75% of its podcast audience exclusively listened to “always-on” shows. That figure describes Spotify’s audience and listening behavior at that time. It is not a migration-success rate, a retention guarantee, or an estimate of how many listeners remain after a show leaves a platform.

- Identify whether the change is hosting, directory distribution, or paid access.
- Export the old RSS feed and episode inventory.
- Mark public, platform-exclusive, and subscriber-only episodes.
- Build and validate the complete destination feed.
- Keep every episode GUID unchanged.
- Match show and episode metadata, artwork, and audio.
- Add

Common migration pitfalls
Closing the old account too soon
Deleting the old hosting account removes the place where the redirect must operate. Even if the new feed is perfect, apps that still request the old address can receive an error. Keep the old service available for the required interval and verify the redirect after each billing or account change.
Redirecting the wrong URL
A host may expose several URLs: a public feed, a dashboard preview, and a directory page. Redirect the actual feed address that directories have stored. Test the exact URL shown in the old RSS submission, not merely a link copied from a browser bookmark.
Creating a second show by accident
Submitting a new feed with changed title, artwork, or GUIDs can make an app treat it as a separate show. Keep the established identity wherever possible, and do not ask listeners to follow both feeds unless the catalog truly represents two different shows.
Assuming one platform controls all platforms
A Spotify listing does not update Apple Podcasts or Amazon Music automatically, and an Apple listing does not guarantee availability elsewhere. Treat every directory as a separate checkpoint unless its support documentation confirms otherwise.

How do I move my podcast without losing subscribers?
Keep the old RSS URL working, point it to the new feed with an HTTP 301, add <itunes:new-feed-url> to the new feed, and leave both in place for at least four weeks. Preserve every episode GUID and verify the new feed before announcing the move.

Will listeners have to follow the show again?
A correctly migrated hosting move is intended to preserve follows and downloads. Some directory listings still require a separate submission or refresh, so give listeners the new listing link and an RSS URL fallback instead of assuming every app updates at the same time.
What happens if I only remove the show from one directory?
The RSS feed can continue operating, but the removed directory will not automatically send followers to a replacement listing. Submit the feed to the new directory and publish a direct link through your website, newsletter, and show channels.
Is a 301 redirect enough by itself?
Use the 301 from the old server and the <itunes:new-feed-url> tag in the new feed together. The redirect is designed to keep episodes flowing, not to guarantee continued engagement or preserve recommendation exposure.
How long should the old feed stay active?
Apple recommends keeping the redirect and new-feed tag active for at least four weeks. Spotify separately advises waiting at least one week after redirecting before deleting a Spotify for Creators account; use the longer four-week period as the safer cross-platform baseline.
Can I change an episode’s audio URL during migration?
Yes, provided the new enclosure works, but keep the episode’s GUID unchanged. Changing the GUID can create duplicate episodes and affect analytics even when the audio itself is identical.
Why did downloads fall after the move even though the feed works?
Check delivery, GUIDs, directory publication, and audio playback first. If followers still receive episodes, compare discovery and recommendation exposure by platform. Also account for differences between the old and new hosts’ measurement and attribution methods.
What should Apple subscription subscribers do after a subscription ends?
Explain the subscription end and any change to subscriber-only audio, then ask them to follow the free RSS show. Cancelling a paid subscription does not automatically create a free follow, although people who already follow the free show can continue receiving episode notifications.

The Bottom Line
Audience continuity starts with feed continuity. Preserve the old RSS address with a 301 redirect and <itunes:new-feed-url>, keep episode GUIDs and metadata intact, test the destination, and submit it to every directory that requires a separate update. Then tell listeners exactly where to follow, distinguish free RSS access from paid subscriptions, and investigate delivery, discovery, and measurement separately before blaming the move for an audience change.
