Keep your PlayStation console in an open location with unobstructed vents and at least 10 cm (about 4 inches) of space between the console and a wall. Avoid closed cabinets, cramped shelves, long-fibre carpets, direct sunlight, heaters and other heat-retaining locations. Clean dust from the vents with a low-powered vacuum only after shutting down and disconnecting the console. If a temperature warning appears, turn the console off, let it cool, then move it to a cooler, well-ventilated position and inspect the vents.
What good ventilation does for a PlayStation console
A PlayStation console draws room air through its intake openings, moves that air across internal heat-producing components and exhausts warmer air. The exact fan speed changes with the game or application, the room and the console’s workload. Sony’s guidance focuses on keeping the intake and exhaust areas clear rather than publishing a universal temperature limit or a measured cooling-performance number.
The practical objective is simple: give the console enough open space to exchange air continuously. A console surrounded by walls, fabric or stored objects has less usable airflow than the same console on an open shelf. Heat can also build up in a cabinet or beside a heater even when the vents themselves appear clean.
PlayStation’s official support guidance recommends at least 10 cm of free space around each side of a PS5, and PS5 safety guides specify at least 10 cm from a wall. Treat that distance as a setup requirement, not as a promise of a particular internal temperature or frame rate. The recommendation appears in the official PS5 noise support article and in the CFI-71XX safety guide and CFI-12XXA safety guide.

Clearance is three-dimensional. Check the sides, top and rear, not just the gap behind the unit. A television, shelf edge or stack of cases can restrict the upper or side openings while the rear appears open. Leave enough room to see the vents and reach the power cable without shifting a hot console.
Choose a location with real airflow
Use an open shelf or stand
Place the console on a stable, hard surface in an open part of the room. Leave the recommended clearance on every side, including the rear where warm air exits. Do not push the rear of the console against a wall after connecting cables; the cable bundle should not force the console closer than the recommended distance.
Keep books, controllers, storage boxes and decorative objects away from the vent openings. An object does not have to touch a vent to interfere with airflow: a tightly packed shelf can restrict the volume of room air available around the console.

Check the shelf after you connect HDMI, network and power leads. Cables should bend without pressing against a vent or pulling the console out of level. If a cable arrangement leaves less than the required gap, reroute the cables or choose a deeper shelf rather than accepting the tighter fit.
Do not use a closed cabinet
A cabinet door can trap the console’s exhaust heat. Even if a cabinet has a small opening, it may not provide the open-air clearance Sony specifies. A narrow compartment also makes dust inspection and safe cleaning harder. Move the console to an open shelf rather than relying on an open cabinet door during play.
Do not assume that opening the door occasionally solves the problem. The console can warm the enclosed air faster than that air is replaced, especially during a long game. If the only available furniture is enclosed, use another stable surface in the room instead of treating the cabinet as a permanent solution.
Avoid long-fibre rugs and carpeted surfaces
PlayStation’s safety guidance warns against placing the console on carpet or a rug with long fibres. Fibres can obstruct lower openings and collect dust near the intake. If the console must be near a carpeted area, use a firm, level shelf or another hard surface that does not cover the vents.
A hard board or improvised platform should not be used to squeeze the console into a narrow gap; the platform helps only when it provides a stable, unobstructed base. Keep the whole setup away from loose fibres, pet hair and objects that could be pulled toward an intake.
Keep heat sources and sunlight away
Do not position the console in direct sunlight, next to a radiator or other heating appliance, or in a location that routinely retains heat. Room temperature can rise inside entertainment units and behind televisions. Relocating the console to a cooler part of the room is more effective than trying to compensate for a hot enclosure with an accessory fan.

Also consider temporary conditions. A setup that is acceptable in winter may become hot beside a window or heater in another season. Recheck the console if you move furniture, add a television, close curtains around the equipment or change the room’s heating arrangement.
| Location or setup | Use it? | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Open, stable shelf with at least 10 cm clearance | Preferred | Matches the manufacturer’s clearance guidance and leaves vents accessible. |
| Closed cabinet or tightly packed cubby | Avoid | Can retain exhaust heat and restrict the surrounding air volume. |
| Long-fibre rug or carpet | Avoid | Fibres may obstruct openings and hold dust around the console. |
| Direct sunlight or beside a heater | Avoid | Adds external heat and can create a hotter operating environment. |
| Open floor on a short-fibre, hard surface | Acceptable if stable | Provides access to room air, but still requires the stated clearance and protection from dust, moisture and impact. |
Set the console horizontally or vertically according to its model
Orientation instructions differ by PS5 family and model number. Use the manual for the exact CFI model printed on your console rather than assuming that a stand or foot from another revision fits.
Horizontal placement
Use the feet or supports specified for your model and make sure the console rests level. The cited CFI-21XX instruction manual specifies included feet for horizontal placement. Do not remove or reposition model-specific supports in a way that covers vents or leaves the unit unstable.
Vertical placement
The CFI-21XX manual specifies a separately sold vertical stand for vertical placement on that family. Verify compatibility with the complete CFI model before buying or installing a stand. A stand establishes a safe, stable orientation; the cited documentation does not establish that a vertical stand improves cooling performance.
Other PS5 revisions may package different supports or instructions. The CFI-21XX instruction manual is a Danish edition and should be treated as model-specific hardware guidance, not a universal rule for every PS5.
Before purchasing a stand, read the model number on the console and compare the complete designation, not just the words “PS5 Slim” or “PS5.” Confirm whether the stand is required or optional for the orientation in your manual. A compatible stand may improve stability and placement flexibility, but no cited manufacturer document promises a cooling benefit from an aftermarket stand.

Keep vents and the surrounding area clear
Inspect the console while it is switched off. Look for dust at the visible intake and exhaust openings, objects leaning against the case, and cable bundles that block the rear. Leave the console’s covers and panels installed during normal operation; do not drape cloth over it when it is running or warm.
Do not place the console inside a fabric sleeve, under a blanket or beneath a decorative cover. These materials can block air openings and retain heat. If you need to protect a stored console from dust, shut it down fully, disconnect it and allow it to cool before covering it; uncover it completely before the next use.
Keep drinks, humidifiers and other moisture sources away from the console. The cited ventilation guidance does not provide a moisture threshold, so the safe practice is simply to avoid placing the system where a spill, condensation or spray could reach its openings.

Clean dust safely
Dust removal is a maintenance step, not a substitute for proper placement. PlayStation recommends a low-powered vacuum around the PS5 vents. Use the following sequence to avoid pulling on cables, moving a running fan unexpectedly or cleaning a hot console.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Save your work and shut down. Use the console’s normal power menu and wait until the system is fully off. Do not clean while a game or application is running.
- Disconnect power. Unplug the AC cable before cleaning. Disconnect other cables if they make the vents difficult to reach.
- Let the console cool. Wait until the case is no longer warm. If you are removing covers for access, the safety guidance says to turn the console off, unplug it and wait for it to cool first.
- Position the vacuum correctly. Use a low-powered vacuum, such as a low-power handheld vacuum, around the vent openings. Keep the nozzle from scraping the case and do not force it into an opening.
- Work around the vents. Remove loose dust from the exterior openings and the nearby shelf. Do not spray liquid, cleaning fluid or compressed material into the console.
- Check the area. After cleaning, restore the console to an open position with the required clearance. Make sure no cloth, rug fibre, object or cable is covering an opening.
- Reconnect and test. Reconnect the AC cable and other leads, power on and monitor normal operation. If warnings continue, stop using the console and follow the troubleshooting section below.
Removing covers is not part of routine dusting. If a cover must be removed for a model-specific cleaning procedure, follow that model’s manual and never do so while the console is connected to power or still hot.
Use suction only at the exterior openings and nearby surfaces. Do not force a nozzle through a grille, disassemble the console to reach hidden dust, or substitute a high-powered shop vacuum for the low-powered tool Sony recommends. If dust is inaccessible or the console remains problematic after safe cleaning, seek PlayStation support.
Understand normal fan noise
The question “Why is my PS5 console making noise?” does not have a single answer. During some games or applications, the cooling fan may temporarily run faster. PlayStation describes this as normal: the fan is temporarily working at a faster rate to cool the system more effectively. A brief increase in fan noise, by itself, does not prove that the console is overheating.
Noise still warrants a basic airflow check. Confirm the 10 cm clearance, inspect for dust, remove nearby objects and make sure the console is not in a cabinet, on a long-fibre rug or near a heat source. Listen for a change after moving the console to an open, cooler location. If unusual or persistent noise remains after those checks, contact PlayStation support rather than opening the hardware or adding an unverified cooling product. The official noise guidance is available at PlayStation’s PS5 console noise page.
Noise is more informative when considered with other signs. A short fan ramp during a demanding scene can be normal; a warning that returns, unstable placement or continued abnormal behavior after relocation is a reason to stop and obtain support. Do not diagnose a fault from sound alone or assume that a louder fan means a particular internal temperature.
Respond to a high-temperature warning
A temperature warning is a stop-and-cool instruction. Do not dismiss it and immediately resume a demanding game.
- Turn the console off. Use the on-screen instruction if available, or shut it down normally. Avoid unplugging a running console unless the system cannot be shut down another way.
- Allow it to cool. Leave the console powered off until it has cooled. Do not cover it or place it in a closed cabinet during this period.
- Move it to open air. Relocate it to a well-ventilated location that is not subject to high temperatures. The CFI-71XX safety guide gives this instruction after the console cools.
- Inspect clearance and vents. Restore at least 10 cm of space from walls and around the console, then check for dust, blocked openings, long fibres and objects against the case.
- Check installed storage hardware. If an M.2 SSD is installed, verify that its heat-dissipation parts are present and correctly fitted according to the console and SSD instructions. The safety guidance specifically calls for checking those parts after a temperature warning.
- Test cautiously. Restart only after the console is cool and repositioned. If the warning returns, stop using the console and contact PlayStation support.
The cited overheating procedure comes from PS5-family safety guidance. Do not infer a specific PS5 light code or temperature threshold from the separate power-indicator page; the relevant overheating instructions on that page are explicitly under PS4.
Use a simple troubleshooting path
The console is warm but shows no warning
Check the placement first: open air, 10 cm clearance, clear vents and no nearby heat source. Fan speed can vary during games, so warmth or temporary noise alone is not enough to diagnose a fault. Shut down and clean the vents if dust is visible.

The fan stays loud after moving the console
Power off, disconnect the AC cable and clean the vents with a low-powered vacuum. Confirm that the console is not on a long-fibre rug or inside a heat-retaining compartment. Persistent abnormal noise after these checks should be referred to PlayStation support.
A temperature warning returns
Repeat the stop, cool, relocate and inspect sequence. Check an installed M.2 SSD’s heat-dissipation components and verify that no cover, stand part or object blocks an opening. Do not continue using the console if the warning returns in an open, clean and cool location; obtain support.
The console is unstable in its chosen orientation
Stop using that arrangement and consult the manual for the exact CFI model. Use the specified feet for horizontal placement or the compatible stand required for vertical placement. Stability and model compatibility come before any claimed cooling accessory benefit.
The problem appears only in one room
Compare the room rather than changing internal hardware. Move the console away from sunlight, heaters and enclosed furniture, restore the 10 cm clearance and check whether nearby objects or cables have shifted. A cooler, open position is the first corrective step supported by Sony’s guidance.

There is no official comparative result in the cited guidance showing that an aftermarket fan, cooling base or similar accessory lowers temperatures or prevents warnings. The core, evidence-based measures are placement, clearance, clear vents and safe dust removal.
If you are considering a stand, evaluate only whether it is compatible with your exact model and whether it is required or optional for the orientation you want. Do not buy one on the assumption that it improves cooling. A stand cannot compensate for a closed cabinet, a blocked vent or a hot location.
Be especially cautious with products that promise a specific temperature reduction without identifying a test method or a console model. The official guidance does not provide a universal temperature target against which such claims can be judged. Spend first on a suitable open location and correct model-specific supports.
Build a maintenance routine
- Before a long play session, confirm that the rear and sides still have the recommended open space.
- Keep the shelf free of books, cloth, loose packaging and other objects near the vents.
- Inspect for visible dust periodically, especially in rooms with pets, carpet or frequent open windows.
- Clean only while the console is off, unplugged and cool, using a low-powered vacuum around the vents.
- Recheck placement after moving a television, entertainment unit or furniture.
- Record the console’s CFI model before buying feet, a vertical stand or replacement hardware.
- Treat every temperature warning as a reason to stop, cool and correct the environment before playing again.
Make the check part of ordinary room maintenance rather than waiting for a warning. When you dust the shelf, verify the clearance and look behind the console for cable pressure or newly stored objects. After a move, confirm orientation supports before powering on.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much space should I leave around a PS5?
PlayStation recommends at least 10 cm (about 4 inches) of free space around each side and at least 10 cm from a wall. Keep the rear, sides and top clear of objects and cable bundles.
Can I keep my PlayStation in an entertainment cabinet?
Avoid a closed cabinet or cramped cubby. It can retain exhaust heat and may not provide the open-air clearance Sony specifies. Use a stable open shelf instead.
Is it safe to place a PS5 on carpet?
PlayStation safety guidance warns against carpet or rugs with long fibres because fibres can obstruct openings and collect dust. Use a firm, level hard surface.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy is my PS5 console making noise?
The fan may temporarily run faster during some games or applications, which PlayStation describes as normal. Check clearance, dust, nearby objects and heat sources; contact support if unusual noise persists.
What vacuum should I use to clean the vents?
Use a low-powered vacuum, optionally a low-power handheld vacuum, around the exterior vents after shutting down, unplugging and cooling the console. Do not force the nozzle into an opening.
What should I do when a temperature warning appears?
Turn the console off, let it cool, move it to a well-ventilated location away from high temperatures, restore the clearance and inspect the vents. If an M.2 SSD is installed, check its heat-dissipation parts. Contact PlayStation support if the warning returns.
Does a vertical stand improve cooling?
The cited manuals establish model-specific stability and orientation requirements, not a cooling-performance benefit. Verify the exact CFI model and whether a stand is required or optional before buying one.
Can I use the PS4 indicator-light instructions for a PS5 warning?
No. The cited power-indicator page places the relevant overheating instructions under PS4. Follow the PS5 safety guidance and your exact model’s manual instead.
The Bottom Line
Put the console on a stable, hard surface in open air, leave at least 10 cm around it, and keep every vent clear of walls, objects, fabric and long fibres. Avoid sunlight, heaters and closed cabinets. Clean exterior dust only when the console is off, unplugged and cool, using a low-powered vacuum. A temporary fan increase can be normal, but any temperature warning means stop, cool, relocate and inspect; if it returns, contact PlayStation support.
